Filling stations across the country have adjusted the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol, with a litre sold at almost N1,000 across the country, Daily Trust can report.

This followed the recent increase in the price of crude oil on the global market, triggered by the escalating Israel-Iran hostilities, with marketing advising Nigerians to brace up for further increases unless there is a de-escalation of the current tension.

Daily Trust reports that since the conflict started, there has been severe damage to critical oil infrastructure, triggering a sharp spike in global oil prices.

Spike in crude prices

As soon as the conflict started, Brent crude increased by 11.71% from $66.45 penultimate Monday to $74.23 after hitting an intraday high of $78.50, the highest since January 27.

Also over the penultimate weekend, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude finished at $72.98 a barrel, up $4.94, or 7.62%.

Similarly, WTI jumped over 14% to its highest since January 21 at $77.62. WTI climbed 13% to its level a week ago.

Israel and Iranian hostilities have worsened volatilities in the oil and gas sector as investors are on the edge of price instability amidst fear of escalating Middle East conflict.

As of yesterday (Sunday), crude prices have rallied above $77 per barrel, slipping from $79 over the weekend. There are fears of further increases following US President Donald Trump’s decision to strike three nuclear facilities in Iran, even as Iran has vowed retaliation.

Fear of further spike as Iran vows retaliation

Analysts say retaliation from Iran may increase crude prices further.

As the third-largest oil producer in the world, Iran accounts for over 24 percent of the oil in the Middle East and over 10 percent of the global oil.

In a worst case scenario, JP Morgan said it sees oil averaging $60 in 2026, but flagged $120–$130 per barrel as a potential range in the event of worst-case outcomes—namely, military conflict and a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil flows.

JP Morgan noted that while such escalations could lead to meaningful supply disruption, particularly if Iran’s 2.1 million bpd of exports are cut off, its base case still assumes diplomacy holds.

While increasing prices of crude means more foreign exchange inflows for Nigeria, its flip side is the rise in the price of PMS at the domestic market, with analysts and marketers warning that Nigerians should brace up for more.

Speaking on the rising oil prices, Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE), Dr. Muda Yusuf explained that while the surge in crude oil price would impact on foreign exchange earnings, oil being the biggest forex earner for the country, “Economies around the world [Nigeria inclusive] would witness a surge in the price of petrol, diesel, jet fuel, gas and related products in the near term. This would have far reaching implications for many economies and businesses.”

He said, “This would even be more impactful if output performance improves. Crude oil price has surged to $75 per barrel, which is about 15% higher than before the outbreak of the Israeli–Iran conflict.

“This development would also positively impact the country’s foreign reserves, ensure better forex liquidity and ultimately the stability of the naira exchange rate.”

Dangote adjusts ex-depot price

Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, Nigeria’s foremost petroleum refiner, last week adjusted its gantry price to N880 per litre, representing a N55 increase from the previous rate of N825 per litre.

This has raised fears of a fresh price hike by petroleum marketers who have upwardly adjusted pump prices across the country.

For instance, Dangote-affiliated filling stations in Lagos, like MRS, increased their pump price from N885 to N925. Also, AP filling station sells at N910 per litre.

Other filling stations in the state were still displaying old prices despite the increase in the price of fuel.

Daily Trust findings showed that some of them displayed N870 and N875 but were selling at N910 and N925.

Daily Trust observed that motorists were lured by the low prices displayed on the board, but expressed surprise at the point of sale.

“I thought it was N830 that was why I drove in. I didn’t know it was a different price at the point of sale,” a motorist said.

Also, a commercial driver, Aluko Taiwo expressed displeasure over the unstable price of fuel, saying the fluctuating price of fuel does not guarantee a fixed price for transporters.

Taiwo who plies Ogba to Ojota added that the recent increase in fuel prices had caused an increase of transport fare from N300 to N400, saying it is sparking dissatisfaction from the commuters.

“We don’t understand the fluctuation of the fuel prices over and over. It is affecting our business. We have increased fare from N300 to N400 and a lot of passengers are complaining. We know what we are facing,” he said.

Fuel sells for N955 in Abuja

In Abuja, Major independent marketers have increased their fuel price to N955. Our reporter, who visited stations like A. A Rano, Mobil, Eternal and A.Y.M Shaafa in different parts of the city observed that their fuel pumps now read the new price.

But the NIPCO fuel station on Airport Road increased its pump price to N950.

A commercial driver, Abdulahi Ibrahim, said the increase was made on Friday.

“I saw the price increase on the day, so I had to buy less litres of fuel than I wanted to buy because I was not having much money on me. I don’t expect there should be any increase with the drop in price we have been witnessing since Dangote refinery came on stream, but I hope it is for the best since there has not been fuel scarcity for a while now.”

He added that transport fares might increase if the price continues to rise.

On his part, Mahmud Junaid said he heard of the increase after learning Dangote Refinery had increased the price for its marketers.

“I know others, too, will follow suit since they sell lower than the remaining stations in the country. So, when I went to refuel my car on Sunday, I was not surprised by the new price. I believe the reason might be due to the Iran-Israel war. Since the war started over a week ago, we have been hearing of an increase in crude oil price, but the fuel pump price has not changed.”

N960 per litre in Kano

Pump price of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) has risen to between N955 and N960 per litre in Kano, a visit to most filling stations in the state has revealed.

While filling stations like AY Maikudi, Aliko Oil and AA Rano are selling at N955, MRS Oil, a station solely selling Dangote refined fuel, is selling at N945.

An MRS filling station located at Wudil Road, Tarauni, has a growing queue of vehicles waiting for their turns to buy fuel. The station was previously selling at N886, making it attractive to motorists.

Fara-fara filling station situated along Maiduguri Road after Hotoro Flyover is selling at N960, with a few commercial vehicles coming to buy.

Oribi, a filling station directly opposite Farafara, is also selling at N960 per litre.

Gates of Most filling stations along the Kano-Maduguri Road, like Audu Manager, AA Rano, and MRS Oil, are closed to the buying motorists.

However, an NNPC retail station was still selling at N910, with motorcycles and commercial tricycles taking turns to buy when our correspondent visited.

A motorcycle rider, Muhammad Sani, told our reporter that the low price attracted him to the station, which he believed does not shortchange people.

Nigerians should brace up for further hike – IPMAN

Speaking with our correspondent yesterday, National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Ukadike, advised Nigerians to brace up for increased prices.

He blamed the current hike on what he called “the sharp rise” in crude oil prices as a result of the ongoing Israel-Iran war.

Ukadike said, “There is a sharp rise in the price of crude, which has gone from $60 to $79 in the international market. It is clear that the price of crude oil in the international market will definitely determine the price of petroleum products locally, and also the price of dollars. So these are the two factors that affect the pump price.”

He stated that Dangote Refinery cannot sell below the market price, even despite the naira-for-crude.

“Dangote would definitely run it in line with the OPEC standard. He is not getting crude oil freely,” he said.

He advised the federal government to discount the PMS product sold in Nigeria to mitigate the impact of the increasing fuel price on Nigerians.

Speaking further, Muda Yusuf added, “An improvement in crude oil price would therefore have a significant impact on government revenue. An improvement in revenue would positively impact fiscal consolidation and hopefully moderate the growth of the fiscal deficit.”

Dr. Dauda Garuba, an oil and gas policy analyst, also shared the sentiment that increasing fuel prices would mean more money for Nigeria.

“The country will make more money from oil exports, but will witness poverty amidst a potential increase in refined products – courtesy of deregulation/liberalisation,” he added.

Foreign AffairsCalls For Trump’s Impeachment Over Bombing Of Iran by ManirBK(op): 8:16pm On Jun 22, 2025
There are calls for US President Donald Trump to
be impeached over his “unconstitutional” move to
bomb top nuclear facilities in Iran.
Democrats have responded with uproar to the US
attacks, but Mr Trump also faces criticism from
within his own party, including prominent Trump ally
Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has spoken against the
strikes.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New
York Democrat, was among the US politicians to
respond to Mr Trump’s announcement of
“successful” attacks on Iran.
SPONSOR AD
“The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran
without authorisation is a grave violation of the
Constitution and Congressional War Powers,” Ms
Ocasio-Cortez said.
He has impulsively risked launching a war that may
ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and
clearly grounds for impeachment.”
Earlier on Sunday, Mr Trump announced that he had
ordered strikes to target Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and
Esfahan nuclear sites.
Mr Trump said American planes successfully
departed Iranian airspace and were “safely on their
way home”.
Mr Trump endured bipartisan backlash over the
strikes, but so far, only Democrats have clamoured
for impeachment despite some of them
acknowledging that they lack the votes.
Republican Thomas Massie, who hasn’t been shy
about splitting with Mr Trump in the past, simply
declared: “This is not Constitutional.”

Foreign AffairsIranian Missiles Hit Israel After US Bombs Iran’s Nuclear Sites by ManirBK(op): 2:49pm On Jun 22, 2025
Iran has carried out a barrage of missile
attacks against Israel, hours after the United
States attacked key Iranian nuclear sites.
Loud explosions were heard in coastal hub
Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Sunday shortly
after the Israeli military reported incoming
Iranian missiles and activated air defences.
Sirens rang in Israeli cities, with rescue
services and media reports saying at least
20 people were injured.
Israeli police reported “the fall of weapon
fragments” in an area near the northern port
of Haifa, where local authorities said
emergency services were heading to an
“accident site”.
Tel Aviv, Haifa, and the southern city of
Beersheba have been the three Israeli areas
targeted by Iran frequently.
Reporting on missile strikes is subject to
strict military censorship rules in Israel,
where at least 50 impacts have been
officially acknowledged nationwide and 25
people have been killed since the war started
on June 13, according to official figures.
Iran has warned of “everlasting
consequences” after President Donald Trump
claimed the US attacks “obliterated” Iran’s
nuclear facilities at Isfahan, Fordow and
Natanz.
Meanwhile, Iran’s National Nuclear Safety
System Centre and the United Nations
nuclear watchdog, International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), say there has been no
increase in radiation levels following the US
strikes.

An Iranian missile slammed into the main hospital in southern Israel, wounding people and causing “extensive damage,” according to the medical facility.

However, IRNA, the Islamic Republic News Agency, has said on Telegram that the “main target” of the missile attack early on Thursday “was the large [Israeli army] Command and Intelligence (IDF C4I) headquarters and the military intelligence camp in the Gav-Yam Technology Park”.

It said that this facility is located next to Soroka hospital in Be’er Sheva.

IRNA claimed that the hospital only suffered minor damage from the shockwave resulting from the missile attack.

The military infrastructure was a precise and direct target,” it said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and promised a response, saying: “We will exact the full price from the tyrants in Tehran.”

Another missile hit a high-rise building and several other residential buildings in at least two sites near Tel Aviv. At least 47 people were wounded in the attacks, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service.

Israel, meanwhile, carried out strikes on Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor in its latest attack on the country’s sprawling nuclear programme, on the seventh day of a conflict that began with a surprise wave of Israeli air strikes targeting military sites, senior officers and nuclear scientists.

Israel’s military said its fighter jets targeted the Arak facility and its reactor core seal to stop it from being used to produce plutonium.

Israel separately claimed to have struck another site around Natanz that it described as being related to Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iranian state TV said there was “no radiation danger whatsoever” from the attack on the Arak site.

Israel is the only nuclear-armed state in the Middle East – but does not acknowledge having such weapons.

Foreign AffairsBombardment, Strikes, Deaths In Third Day Of Fierce Israel-iran Conflict by ManirBK(op): 7:06pm On Jun 15, 2025
Iran has launched a new wave of ballistic
missiles against Israel soon after loud explosions were heard in its capital Tehran, as the two countries continue to trade heavy fire for a third consecutive day
and as US President Donald Trump hints both at peace coming “soon” and at
the possibility of the United States joining the conflict.

On Sunday, residents in Tehran reported shuddering blasts in different areas in the heart of the city. Reports say missiles struck in Niavaran and Tajrish, in the capital’s north, and around the Valiasr and Hafte Tir squares in the city centre.

Other cities attacked by Israel included Shiraz and Isfahan, where a military base of the Defence Ministry was hit. The Israeli army said it struck an aerial refuelling aircraft at Mashhad Airport in eastern Iran, describing it as its longest-range attack since launching operations against Iran last week.

Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi
said, “Iran has not experienced a war to this extent since the Iran-Iraq War ended in 1988. There were similar Israeli strikes last year, of course, but nothing compared to what’s been happening since Friday.

“The government said earlier today that metro stations, schools and mosques are going to be ready to host people. But parts of these facilities, including mosques and schools, do not seem safe enough to be used as a sort of shelter,” he added.

Iranian officials say at least 138 people have been killed in Israel’s onslaught since Friday, including 60 on Saturday, half of them children, when a missile brought down a 14-storey apartment block in Tehran. There were no reports as yet of casualties from Sunday’s attacks.

In Israel, authorities said on Sunday that several missiles were launched from Iran, most of which were intercepted.

Rescue workers were searching for survivors in the rubble from the previous night’s wave of Iranian strikes. The hardest hit area was the town of Bat Yam, where more than 60 buildings were damaged. “Iran will pay a heavy price for the murder of civilians, women and children,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said from a balcony overlooking blown-out apartments in Bat Yam, a city just south of Tel Aviv.

Overnight, Iran struck the port city of Haifa and neighbouring Tamra, where at least four women were killed. Since the start of the conflict on Thursday, at least 13 people have been killed and 380 have been wounded in Israel.

Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh, reporting from Amman, Jordan, said, “The damage from Iranian attacks is certainly extensive and unprecedented. This is the first time that Israel has confronted a state with a formidable army in the region, certainly the first time since 1973 [against Egypt]”. “To the north, in Haifa, oil and gas pipelines were damaged, but activities continue at the oil refineries”, she added.

Israel launched its operation with a surprise attack on Friday that killed several members of the Iranian military’s top echelon, killed several nuclear scientists, and damaged the country’s nuclear sites. Since then, Israel’s attacks have been broadening in their scope, hitting residential areas and Iran’s civilian and energy sectors and raising the stakes for the global economy and the functioning of the Iranian state.

PoliticsHajj: 11 States Spend N6.2bn On Pilgrims by ManirBK(op): 4:50pm On Jun 12, 2025
Reports said each of the 3,345 pilgrims from the state received 50 Saudi Riyals as a support during the Sallah festivities and ease their stay in the Holy Land.

This was disclosed on Monday by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s representative and head of the Kano Hajj Delegation Committee, the Emir of Karaye, Alhaji Muhammad Maharaz Karaye.

The emir delivered the governor’s goodwill message while lddressing the pilgrims at Makkah’s Shari Mansur Kano House No. 1, the emir delivered Governor Yusuf’s goodwill message.

The secretary to the committee and Director-General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Lamin Rabi’u Danbappa, said that the disbursement process was comprehensive.

He was also reported to have announced an additional provision for the pilgrims, which would see each of them receive a large travel bag in preparation for their return journey home.

The Kebbi State Government did not subsidise the hajj fare for the 3,800 pilgrims from the state.

But in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Governor Nasir Idris approved 200 Riyal for each of the pilgrims from the state.

The Lagos State Government also did not subsidise hajj fare this year as each of the 1,315 pilgrims from the state paid about N9 million.

But Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gifted each of the pilgrims 180 riyals (equivalent of N74,870) totaling N98,454,050 for all of them.

The Jigawa State Government, which equally did not subsidise hajj fare this year, reportedly gave 100 Riyals (approximately N43,000) to each of the 930 pilgrims from the state as “Happy Arafat gift.”

Each of the 3,200 pilgrims from Sokoto State received 1,000 Riyals (equivalent to N450,000) as a sallah gift from Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

The governor made the announcement on Saturday during his visit to the Sokoto contingent in Mina, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he congratulated them on the successful completion of the hajj exercise.

The governor explained that the gesture was aimed at supporting the pilgrims financially as they prepared for their return journey to Nigeria.

Earlier, the State Amirul Hajj, Alhaji Ummarun Kwabo, had thanked the governor for his support which, he said, significantly contributed to the success of this year’s hajj operations.

He noted that all the committee set up for the pilgrimage had been working diligently to ensure a smooth and successful exercise.

Borno pays for pilgrims’ rams

The deputy governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur, announced that the state government paid the cost of sacrificial ram (hadiyya) for each of the pilgrims from the state.

A total of 2,174 pilgrims were said to have performed this year’s hajj from the state.

When contacted, Malam Dauda Iliya, the Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Zulum, said apart from the hadiya, he was not aware of any subsidy to the pilgrims by the state government.

Expenses misplaced priority—Analyst, clerics

A public affairs analyst, Professor Yahaya Tanko, in an interview, described state governments’ expenditures on hajj “a misplacement of priorities.”

He said the governors should rather focus on addressing security concerns and improving the welfare of citizens.

“This is a misplacement of priorities by government. They do not seem to value governance, especially issues of real concern to the people,” he said.

He said at a time when the insecurity continued to threaten the livelihoods of citizens, particularly farmers and displaced persons, state governments should be directing resources towards improving safety and economic conditions rather than sponsor religious pilgrimages.

“A government whose people cannot go to their farms, whose communities are displaced, and whose citizens struggle daily to raise ransom for kidnapped loved ones should focus on these pressing concerns. Diverting resources to pilgrimage sponsorship is ill-advised,” Tanko stated.

“Even if security is within the exclusive list of federal responsibilities, the people affected by insecurity are residents of these states. State governments must contribute to securing the environment in which their people live,” he said.

He said failure to prioritize security would render government investments in education, agriculture, health and social welfare meaningless.

“Without security, all other investments, be it in education, health, or agriculture, amount to nothing. A government that watches helplessly while its people suffer should not divert resources to pilgrimage sponsorship.

“Going to Hajj should be a personal or community effort. Committing huge public funds to sponsor individuals for religious activities, especially in the face of security and economic challenges, is highly questionable,” the don said.

He urged state governments to reallocate resources towards securing lives and improving the standard of living for their citizens.

Also commenting on the issue, the national chief imam of the Al-Habibiyah Islamic Society (AIS) Sheik Fuad Adeyemi, said though it is not illegal for the federal and state governments to sponsor pilgrims for hajj, the resources deployed should have been utilized for other priorities that would benefit more people with more positive impacts.

“The billions could have been used to sponsor the education of the children of the pilgrims. This would benefit the pilgrims, the children and by extension the community, for which they would be grateful for life.

“Some of the people sponsored for the pilgrimage, still do not understand some of the hajj rites and those who paid themselves seems to be better prepared and engaged in the hajj rites better.

“The issue even seems like ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’. How much would be claimed to have been spent and how much was actually spend?

“So, sponsoring pilgrims and also spending that much as gift for them should be reviewed by those concerned and use the resources for projects and other interventions that would benefit the greater majority,” Adeyemi said.
