you do not need an indelec lightnng arrestor for a domestic residence

a franklin arrester is all you need

you only need one arrestor

anything else is overkill

what you need is an arrestor at the highest point in your facility

it must be properly earthed

Area covered is dependent on:
-Type of lightening arrestor
-likelihood is it occurring.
-shape of your roof
-the length and breadth of building and so on.
So you may actually need more than 1.

You also need a very good earthing. Like Niyi pointed out the resistance must be very low so that the current can flow easily to ground when surge is building up. Else you're are causing more harm - attracting what you cannot handle shocked

Thanks.

Additional clarifications.

There is an earth rod outside the building.

It is less than 5 inches from the building.

The solar panels are 170 inches from the building.

I connected the solar panels that distance of 170 inches to the general earth of the house.

You mean that I should do another earth rod less than 5 inches from the solar panels then connect both underground right?

The last paragraph is what I meant.
If the connection in the bolded is outside your building, I think it should be ok. Surge will flow to ground rather than I to your house.

FEGEITOK:
For those of us that have earthed their solar panels.

When do I need to create a separate earth terminal for the panels instead of that of the main house?

Currently the panel earthing is connected to the house earth.

Do it separate. You don't want flow path to ground through your home.

Inside the ground, link the panel earth rod to the earth rod serving the house.

Guiding principle: surge follows shortage/fastest (least resistant) path to ground.

Sometimes stats can paint a very poor picture.
When I checked the stats after first half, I thought engln outplayed us: Stat showed that England had 60% possession, more shot on target. I just finished watching first half now an I can tell that we were the better side.
The shot that hit bar is counted as off target.
We were just unlucky.

Wire plays a major role in consumption as there is a voltage drop and more current is required, imagine a voltage from 220 to 160V at the end of the pump!

If there pump requires 8AMP to run at 220V, but its seeing only 160V it will draw 11A. So 11A will be required from Source increasing the consumption from 8A to 11A which is 1760w to 2420w

See attached. Voltage dropped from 196V to 166V
A voltage drop of 220v to 160v in a wire length is close to 30% voltage drop. Who designs such a system? Even a 1.5mm2 cable won't give that except the distance is far - that's not to say you should use 1.5mm2 for your pump.

There are several online tools to estimate voltage drop at specific distance and load current with different sizes of wire. Checkout one here https://www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html?necmaterial=copper&necwiresize=0&necconduit=pvc&necpf=0.85&material=copper&wiresize=0.4066&resistance=1.2&resistanceunit=okm&voltage=220&phase=ac&noofconductor=1&distance=20&distanceunit=meters&amperes=11&x=83&y=22&ctype=nec

Edit: I just went back to check distance to his pump. It's >55m. Least he should use to satisfy voltage drop of less than 5% is 4mm2. In my side pump depth rarely reach 10m depth.

Finally did the test today with "CLAMP METER DT3266F"
Surge: 16.64amp * 230v = 3,827.2w
Continues draw: 8.2amp * 230 = 1,886w

The reduction in consumption is as a result of stronger/better wire used (2.5mm² Comester)

Below is the initial test done in Q1 of this year.
Max Surge = 19amp * 230v = 4,370w
Continues draw = 11amp * 230v = 2,530w

The difference is too much to be attributable to change in wire size except the distance is extremely long. Other factors may be responsible:
1) different voltage. Some appliances consume more power as voltage increases while some consume same so long as it is within its operated level.
2) water level in the well. If the water table has risen as it is in rainy season slightly less power is required to lift it to same height than when water table has lowered.

Wire alone can't consume close to 700W.

RS485.

those ports are usually RS485, not RJ45.

Most inverter boards do not include network cards......

Rj45 or Rj11is the plug. RS485, CAN, RS232, Modbus, are communication standards which can equally utilize any of the plugs.

USD to RS232 (Rj45) is not standardized. You have to know the pinout for the Rj45 end so you can request for exactly that. Else you may get one and it doesn't work with your controller.
Does your manual has the pinout?
What's the brand and model of your controller?

There are so many cable like that but for different purposes. What is it for? What's the standard?
It can be USB - RS485, USB to CAN, USB - modbus, and so on. Each has different pin out at the Rj45 end. And the chip in the USB end is tailored to the specific purpose.

You can get this aliexpress store to create it for you with a genuine FTDI chip:

Your last statement is an opinion that I differ.
The above should not even occur in the first place since we all are aware of our appliances' wattages. Well, the type of inverter we all use differ.

You may be right.
Short circuit and overload you can control but you can't control over voltage and surge.
SPD degrades on each hit. So inbuilt suppression will degrade for sure after a while if you don't have external.
When lightening happen in my area I don't run around disconnecting appliances.

Most inverter advice leaving 50cm space around it for heat dissipation - that's ventilation. If your inverter has to go off due to overheat, components inside degrades gradually and would fail eventually if this happens frequently.

Rejection of voltages above 285V by your inverter is done by a circuitry.
The circuit may fail when nepa decides to give you line to line voltage of 385V in error. It's better for your overvoltage protector to die than your inverter in such scenerio. This happened not too long in my area, so many appliances were destroyed in adjourning houses.

Minute details like this account for why some people's inverter/appliances last longer than that of others.

I'm on my 2nd inverter in over 14 yrs - not because of failure (but upgrade)

Does an inverter with the following protection need extra protection?

1. Short circuit
2. High temperature
3. Low/high voltage
4. Overload
5. Storm surge

Yes. Same way u lock your bedroom bedroom in addition to having main entrance.
1) MCB - incoming and outgoing
2) ventilation.
3) over voltage/under voltage protector.
4) same as 1 above
5) SPD with proper earthing.

Inverter doing any of the above should be last resort as each time it does this for you, it degrades and will eventually fail.

Which would you oversize, battery bank or PV array?

Please share your reason.
Theoretically, both - to cover 3 days of no sun.
Pragmatically, your battery should be enough to sustain your night time use (2 night use - oversized) . Your solar panel should be able to generate enough to cover your day use and also be able to refill the battery.
Politics / Re: Subsidy Removal: You Can’t Fool Nigerians Again, CNG Tackles NLC by mank1234(m): 12:33am On Jun 03, 2023
Itrybe:
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has kicked against what it described as the deceptive move of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

The spokesperson of the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement issued Thursday, said it observed that on every occasion, the NLC would deceive the public into believing they are protecting their interests, only to betray the course and negotiate with the government at the expense of the suffering masses.

It said the first instance was the NLC protests over the harsh economic policies of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in February 2017 which came to an abrupt end without achieving any results and no convincing explanation to the public.

It said, “Then came the September 2018 strike, which was also terminated after the NLC met with government officials and compromised the effort with no effect.

“The worst scenario was the October 2020 organised labour plan to shut down the entire economy in protest over the increase in the pump price of petrol and a hike in electricity tariff.”

The group noted the strike was called off at the last minute after a meeting between government officials and labour leaders in Abuja.

The group stressed that it took exception to the move by labour at that time, describing it as a huge trade-off and compromise in its strongly worded letter of October 6, 2021, to the former President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, expressing disappointment in the labour leadership, for deliberately suspending an action meant to check the arbitrary hike in fuel prices by the Buhari administration.

“Now that NLC wants to take the nation for granted once more, we demand that it should first of all explain its whereabouts at the time the budget was prepared, presented, defended by the government of the former president Muhammadu Buhari and passed by the 9th National Assembly without the provision for subsidy,” it said.

According to Abdul Azeez,”We call on the new administration of President Bola Tinubu to handle this obviously dicey situation with utmost wisdom and compassion so that the innocent public is not made victim.

“We call the attention of the Tinubu administration to be vigilant over the latent trap set for it with the subsidy issue by the outgone government aiming to set it on a collision course with the public early in the day.

“We therefore advise government to deploy maximum wisdom, and caution to chart a workable means of dealing with the bad situation deliberately thrown on its laps in such a way that no one gets

It's supposed to reduce as you said. It's either they want to scam us so we can continue with subsidy so they can continue smiling to bank with inflated importation or they are holding brief for Dangote so he can peg the price very high when the refinery starts delivering.
