englishmart: My iPhone 14 had an issue and I decided to travel from my temporary Abeokuta residence to Ikeja to fix it. Before I got to Ikeja, I was stopped over at Falomo. I crawled into an eatery where I was disappointingly presented with an unbelievably and criminally inflated price of food I got this almost-nothing for #1500. Can you imagine the absurdity? That was preposterous, I thought to myself.
I just got relieved from work. I'm out of my mind right now. Where do I go from here?
I've been working with this company for 10 years as a lift operator. At some point I learnt how to clear fatal and reset the lifts if they got faulty. I can even drive on inspection or reservation. All the while I worked there, I spent almost all I earned financing my family. I, to 80% saw my immediate younger brother and sister through school through my earnings. The only savings I have is less than 16k. That's probably what I will survive on pending when I get a new job.
It's absolutely frustrating. I wish I saved for the rainy day. But how could i have possibly saved when I earned less than a 100k with so much to take care of?
I'm a popular figure here and have contributed immensely to Nairaland. @seun lalasticlala.
@ OP, one of this two stories is not true , please help me identify the one with falsehood, thanks
Wasky101: Leave politics aside do you honestly think the minimum wage for civil servants should be 60k. That's is the most unproductive organization In the country. 10% of them are outside the country. Some haven't gone to work this year.
They are the most corrupt (even more than the politicians).
If you leave civil servants without salary they wld survive on bribe they take from citizens.
80% of them work less than 12 hrs per week.
Again forget politics. Judge by their conduct do you think they deserve it
I don't think this one know the meaning of civil servants , , .. well , let me help your ministry, the ongoing negotiation is to determine what should be the minimum wages for workers in Nigeria whether civil servants or private sectors employees, if you are saying civil servants doesn't deserve their wages because some of them were adjudged by you to be corrupt and hardly show up in office, it's like saying all students in universities should not pay school fees because some lecturers were considered to be lazy and doesn't like to attend classes or give their best to the students..
Beautifulday: Let me start with how did we get here, inflation wise.
Inflation start in Buhari regime.
Closing of the border was the first trigger. Buhari closed the borders to encourage farmers without statistics.
He didn't know the volume of rice we consume per month, per year in this country (taking rice as a case study). He didn't know the number of farmers that produce rice and the quantity they produce.
When the demand was more than local production. Price went up. Even at that, locals couldn't meet up with demand. They started snuggling. Food inflation.
General inflation started immediately after COVID 19. There was too much free money in circulation due to yahoo boys. We are still feeling the impact till today even when those free money are no longer available.
you're right on this , they closed bother against rice importation through the land border and start pumping money to the imaginary rice farmers through the CBN, the politicians in turn, after eating the money and have nothing to show for it ,set up wooden pyramids covered by some scanty bags of rice to deceived the public , then the demands raised above the supplies and boom 💥 inflation creeped in.
seguntijan: Use your heads. President Tinubu CANNOT dictate the salaries of Senators or Representatives. They are a separate, independent and self-financing arm of government. They can even impeach the President. The President cannot even determine Judges salary. If the NLC is not happy with their pay, then they should face them. They should not make the rest of us pay for their beef with Senators or the National Assembly. Ask for something reasonable, like ₦75,000, and almost 100% of the populace will support you.
someone withdrew his service because he is not satisfied with the pays you're saying he is making you to suffer, even your gateman will abandon your gate and drop the keys if he is not properly remunerated.
Jeruadamma: I have a friend who is a chronic cheat
He cheats on his girlfriend whom he has spent over 9yrs dating
I got to be friends with the girl through my friend on their second year of dating
This friend of mine isn’t well to do, the girl has paid her dues and even sleep on the floor with him and go through hard times with him but why he continues to cheat on her is what I don’t understand.
Atleast if I don’t know, I know three girls he has impregnated but it was terminated.
The main chick everyday complains to me but hey! You don’t expect me to tell you to quit a relationship with my guy.
I say some words indirectly to her and she isn’t catching the clues I give to her to quit that relationship. Over the years I have given her clues upon clues for her to move on and find love elsewhere but I think she is blinded by love and not even catching all the clues
I can’t openly tell you that my guy is doing shit here and there. You see the signs, you know the girls and the pregnancy, I give you clues yet you still sick advise or want me to talk to my friend
Yes I do talk to him Every time but had to stop talking let him as a man make his decisions.
Over 9yrs with someone and in the next 5yrs he doesn’t seem like who still has intentions of settling down with her. To think that his new side chick has taken him to see his uncles and parents , starting marriage talk is disgusting. He is playing the new side chick too and his family
you're secretly eyeing your friend's girlfriend I knew it's difficult to admit this but I can pinned a lot of jealousy vibes from your write up .
YellowbaMoslem: If that is the case, why don't American presidents or politicians earn 5 million dollars per month, The US of A can afford more than that.
Stop defending evil because of political affiliation.
The only time you claim to be realistic is when you want to defend evil, are you not realistic enough to know that Nigeria can afford 100k minimum wage if embezzlement is curtailed? Keep playing
don't mind them, most of them are 30k laptop gangs , they're simply saying what their paymaster want them to say.
DeLaRue: A net salary of about N850,000 is not excessive for Special Assistant.
Salaries are so low across many sectors in this country.
A Special Assistant that is married with 3 Children who are in private primary and secondary schools in Abuja cannot survive on N850,000 per month. It is no surprise, corruption is widespread.
......But a civil servant with similar family structure must learn how to survive with #60k salary
Bamss1: I had to rack my head to understand what point you are trying to make.
Try debate with sech school students first my brother.
why are you deceiving him? My niece in nursery two can do better than this ,let him Carry his open debate to kindergarten where they're reciting A for Apple, B for Ball .... That's where he belongs
oluwaseyi0: To be realistic can the average private nursery school in Benue or Osun afford to pay each of their teachers 500,000, and that one-man struggling business can afford to pay their cleaner 500,000k per month or you think minimum wage begins and ends at the public office, in fact, currently some states like Abia states ain't even generating enough to pay the 30k minimum wage,
if level one step one is 500k, how much will fresh graduates which usually start at level 8 receive, 3.5million monthly I guess, then a level 13/14 senior public servant will receive 13m monthly or do you intend to pay level one step one 500k but intend to pay level fourteen 600k?
if you have less than 25 employee in your organization you're excepted from paying the minimum wages.
I dey always think say seun get sense before ooo, I now understand why he no dey gree post for nairaland, you no want inflation and you dey increase your advert rates every week? See his obiora Head.
TimeManager: The Governors are having a good laugh at labour union, as at the last meeting no Governor was present. Can you force the Governors to pay the proposed 60k?. A state like Abia could not pay the old 18k minimum wage and nobody could raise a voice. How could they afford 60k or a little above.
-Kiss the truth!
There is one thing you need to understand; if a governor said he can't pay the minimum wages that doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't have the resources to but he simply doesn't see it as priority, Bello yahaya , former governor of kogi state claimed he doesn't have money for workers salary and refused to pay for several months but @ the end of his tenure he his doing "bojuboju" for EFCC because of the billions of naira he looted while in office.
fullclub: State officials receiveing bogus salaries..... They are criminals who care about their pocket and they are responsible for where we find our self today..
nice one from you 👍, now that we have realized that the people in government didn't care about anyone except their pockets so the burden of sacrificing to save the economy should be shifted to the downtrodden civil servants, right?
fullclub: Study more on Neoliberalism, subsidy reform as regard theory that explain why governments should cut subsidy.
The mess u see today is part of Buhari an illiterate who calls himself a reformer... A clueless man supported by tinubu to run this country as as a tout. That led this country where it is today
agreed, the deed has been done and there is inflation in the economy so are you suggesting that the civil servants should go hungry pending the time the economy is revitalize?, I believed apart from studying as a PhD student in UK, you're also working part time, pls tell us what's your wages per hour? I want to check something.
fullclub: I will not embrace silence am a Nigerian I only went to school... A master/PhD then I will be back.
Real wage is the actual value of the naira. Normal wage is the face value.. Which is what labour is asking to be reviewed upward.
I know my argument is seen as anti progress especially to the working class in FG payroll.
Let me ask you... Are you willing to pay your gate man 400,000 as minimum wage?
The UK u talked about, they do everything right to ensure that their real wage doesn't fall.
Government must tackle insecurity that drives away investors, they must ensure farmers are able to go to farm unhurt, they must support farmers that grows this crops, end importation of fuel, seek way to address excessive borrowing, and seek ways to ask for debt forgiveness and pay debt borrowed.. Lastly they should ensure state governors are accountable.
This are the thing sinking naira down.
so according to your PhD knowledge, it's only the civil servants that should be impoverised by accepting peanut as wages in the name of preventing inflation while other actors in the schemes of things like the executive, legislature's members should smile to bank with billions of naira monthly?
fullclub: Am an Msc student in a prestigious University in the UK and this area of discuss is my specialty.
No economic theory will support wage increase by 100% not alone 500%
If government should peg 400,000 as minimum wage then you should be ready to pay your maid, gate man, security guards, drivers etc 400,000 as salary.
But there is economic theory to support the removal of subsidies on petroleum, floating of naira , over 200% increase in the salaries of judicial officers, billions of naira spending to buy bullets proofs SUV vehicles for the legislative members, billions of naira on budget padding and trillion of naira for Coast road from calabar to Lagos? , The payment of minimum wages is only applicable to people that have up to 25 and above employees in their organization.
Johel: No wonder you're so poor, poverty dey your DNA... minimum wage that should be about an average of 200k or even 350k.
You're wicked and stupid...60/70k kill you there...how much is bag of rice? Fool!
I hope you won't die broke sha.
Don't mind him, what does a 15 years old boy needs money for ? ,. He can't really appreciate the subject of discussion here, that's what nairaland has turned to, no age limit to comment.
Kevineleven: Your parents owe you and you know it , they brought you into this world, so it is their responsibility to train , feed and empower you to stand. If your brother is a billionaire the type that throws money around and he cannot empower you to escape poverty he is wicked. That is why rich men get kidnapped by their own family. You guys better wise up. Stop wickedness, Stop weaponising poverty
The way you are talking, you may decide to kidnap your uncle one day simply because he is not giving you his hard earned money :-
Kevineleven: What Laziness didnt you hear that he is a phone repairer? Stop encouraging wickedness and selfishness, that is why Nigeria is like this. His brother's money is not his but he is giving away millions to outsiders and spraying money in Night club.
You can't force anyone to help you, even your parents don't own you anything once you're an adult.talkmore of a brother.
Validated: If Tinubu cannot pay N250K, let him resign. What is he doing with a bloated list of aides? A bloated list of useless ministries? Paying N90b for hajj? Why use our scarce resources to massage the useless ego of a useless NASS? He increased fuel from by 300%, dollars increased by 300%, he is wasting N15T on an unprofitable and unfeasible costal road, he is busy sharing money to idle people in the name of fraudulent 'cash transfer". Yet he cannot pay those who drive the economy their wages?
OP must be one of the beneficiaries of the bolded.
