It didn't really come as a surprise to me since he was wearing the "Arm band" during the pre-season and Wenger did stress that he likes defenders as captains, which I guess I'd kind of agree with.

So far for Arsenal, Gallas hasn't done much other than talk, but maybe being captain will indeed bring the best out of him. We know what he's capable of, and he is now one of very few players in our squad who's actually won the Premiership, so he knows what he's doing.

However, like Henry, one can't help but worry if we don't please him he'll just end up going. He's not Arsenal through and through like[b] Kolo [/b] or Adams back in the day. It is worrying to think Wenger has once again made someone captain to please them.

But I dunno, so far his effect on the team has looked good. He asks a lot of these players, but he's not moody and intimidating in the way Henry was. I don't think we have to worry about that. Gallas would make a good captain.
