This write-up is in reaction to a video making rounds on social media which seeks to question the rationale for our celebration of Christmas on the 25th of December.

*Thanks for sharing this video. The contents are true but the message is entirely misleading.*

*Yes, the Catholic Church converted the pagan feast to the celebration of Christ's birthday but it is Christ's birthday all the same. Are the producers of this video trying to convince me that Christ is now an idol?*

*For Goodness sake, Christ is God and I don't see how celebrating his birth on this particular day makes me an idol worshipper.*

*My dear, Christ was not born on the 25th of December (according to historical records and Biblical research which is still a guess work) but whatever day I choose to celebrate Christ's birth, be it in January, February, March, September or December, what is important is that my celebration draws me closer to Christ, makes me a better Christian and helps me reflect on the lessons surrounding his birth.*

*Yes, the bible never said we should celebrate Christmas but as far as I know, I celebrate my birthday because I value my life, I also attend birthdays of people whose life has imparted on me, I celebrate my parents' birthday because I value them, I appreciate them for bringing me to life.*

*Birthdays are occasions to reflect on certain person's life and give them honour. Can a man forget his wife's birthday? What message does it send to her? How does she feel when her husband, the love of her life does not even say 'happy birthday'? It shows her she is nothing to him.*

*In the end, at the bottom of all these is the underlying argument about the divinity of Christ. Do you believe Christ is God? Do you believe Christ was born a man like us? We celebrate his physical birth. We remind ourselves that God at some point became man like us. Christ, who is God is not less than God and worshiping Christ by celebrating his birth does not make me an idol worshipper.*

*You see, a Christianity that is entirely based on what the Bible says and only what the Bible says; a Christianity that literally interprets the Bible as the text shows, a Christianity that takes no cognizance of the fact that people (human beings) were inspired by the Holy Spirit in the composition of the Bible, that God himself never threw the copy of an already written Bible to the earth, a Christianity that seeks to attack the Church using the same Bible that the Church itself edited (scrutinized, organised, added and removed books), is a Christianity that only seeks to destroy the body of Christ from within.*

*Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas based on what you read in the Bible, then why attack fellow Christians who do? Why make them feel bad for celebrating God in the person of Christ? Why take offence at people who wish you merry Christmas? How come those who do not celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December do not also celebrate it in September as they claim to be the actual birth time of Christ? Is Christ such an unimportant personality whose birthday does not deserve to be celebrated at all?*

*I think the Catholic Church deserves credit for its inculturation and I believe that Africa as a whole is yet to be fully inculturated and this may be the reason why our Christianity is still skin deep. We need to look into our traditional practices as a people and find ways of bringing in Christ as it was done in Rome with the conversion of Sun Worship to Son (Christ) worship.*

*How I wish Christians would make videos that attack sin and evil in our world today. How I wish we would be so creative as to come out against immorality and corruption amongst Christians? Why are we so passionate about trying to prove which Church or which sect is better than another?*

*What we should be attacking are those who take advantage of the festive period to commit sin. We should attack those who in the name of celebrating Christ’s birthday let go of their moral guard. We should attack those who say merry X-mas rather than Merry Christmas just in an attempt to remove Christ from the picture. We should attack those who simply decorate their houses and hang lights without attempting to decorate their lives with virtues and seek to become lights to the world.*

*We should attack Nigerians who create artificial scarcity and hoard basic necessities in a bid to make maximum profits during the Christmas season. We should attack those who suddenly inflate prices of virtually everything they had always had. We should attack those who bought fuel at N145 and are now selling at N300. We should attack filling stations who never have fuel when the product is available only for them to suddenly start selling at exorbitant prices when the product is scarce. We should attack those who are Christians who cannot be truthful, Christians only by mouth and not from the heart.*

Why Did God Slay Onan (Genesis 38:3-10)?

The story of Onan, son of Judah, occurs in Genesis 38:3-10: "So [Shua, the wife of Judah] conceived and bore a son, and [Judah] called his name Er. She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. . . . Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD killed him. And Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother." But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. Catholic doctrine uses Onan's story to prohibit the use of birth control.

What about St. Martin | St Maarten, the immorality is close to non and crime rate very low, its 100% catholic State, there are many others. Truth is immorality has nothing to do with religion it about personal self. The ability for one to guide and direct himself in a way that the law and custom permits.

We must be very careful with this sort of topic.

Another thing is how do you define "immorality"... the word itself has many meanings depending on your culture and tradition. what is immoral in USA might not be in Nigeria. Only our customs can define what immorality is, and custom varies.

The Country Music world mourns the loss of one of its’ most distinctive song stylists with the passing of Don Williams after a short illness. He was 78.

A native of Floydada, Texas, Williams was born May 27, 1939. He grew up in Portland, TX, graduating there in 1958. Music had always been a part of his upbringing, entering – and winning - a talent contest when he was just three years old. For his efforts, Williams received an alarm clock. He began playing guitar during his teen-age years, learning the songs that he heard on the radio during that period. He and his friends played in local bands around the area, and he wed wife Joy Bucher on April 10, 1960.

To support his family – which would grow to include two sons, Gary and Timmy – Williams worked at a number of odd jobs, including oil field work, and also as a bill collector. While living in Corpus Christi in 1964, he formed the folk-styled trio The Pozo Seco Singers with Lofton Cline and Susan Taylor. They stayed together for seven years, with their biggest hit being “Time.”

After the group disbanded in 1969, Williams soon found his way to Nashville. By 1971, he had a songwriting contract with the publishing company owned by Jack Clement. The next year would see Williams ink a recording deal with Clement’s JMI Records. He made his chart debut with “The Shelter of Your Eyes” in 1973, and was soon hitting the charts time and again with a much more laid-back sound than a lot of the music coming out of Nashville at the time. 1974 would see Williams top the charts for the first time with “I Wouldn’t Want To Live If You Didn’t Love Me.” From that point all the way through 1991, each Williams single would hit the Top-40 on the Billboard Country charts. His 1970s hits included such chart toppers as “Tulsa Time,” “She Never Knew Me,” and “It Must Be Love.” His career grew steadily through label shifts to ABC / Dot, MCA, Capitol, and finally RCA. Williams also gained a devoted following overseas in such unlikely spots as England, Ireland, and New Zealand , and even South Africa and Kenya – where he reached superstar status. He was named the Male Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association in 1978. Though known for being very low-key and soft spoken, Williams did make two movie appearances – 1974’s W.W. and The Dixie Dancekings, and 1980’s Smokey and the Bandit II.

The 1980s saw no slow down in Williams’ recorded output, with the singer notching his biggest hit with 1981’s “I Believe In You,” which not only topped the Country charts, but crossed over to No. 24 on the Hot 100. By this time, he had earned the nickname “The Gentle Giant” for his trademark mellow sound, and the hits continued to pile up throughout the rest of the decade - “Stay Young,” “If Hollywood Don’t Need You,” and “One Good Well” being three of his biggest of the 1980s. His final top ten came in 1991, with “Lord Have Mercy On A Country Boy,” a song that Josh Turner – a Williams fan – would record in 2006.
Though the changing of the guard at radio slowed down Williams’ chart success, he continued to perform for sold-out crowds in America and abroad, playing a final tour in 2006. However, retirement was not in the cards for the singer, who returned to the road in 2010 – the same year that he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Williams’ return to the spotlight also included a pair of albums on Sugar Hill, 2012’s And So It Goes, and 2014’s Reflections, which included contributions from Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, and Keith Urban. It was a sign of his enduring appeal that both albums hit the Top-20 on the Billboard Country Albums charts – his biggest rank there in three decades.

In 2016, Williams decided that the time was right for his final performance, calling it a career after one of the most successful careers in the history of the Country Music business. "It's time to hang my hat up and enjoy some quiet time at home. I'm so thankful for my fans, my friends and my family for their everlasting love and support," the 76-year-old Williams said in a statement at the time. Last year also saw the final release of Williams’ career, a live CD and DVD recorded in Ireland. In 2017, the singer was the subject of a tribute album, Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams, that included performances of his hits by artists such as Lady Antebellum and Garth Brooks.
