PUBLIC ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY, BABATUNDE RAJI FASHOLA, SAN TO LAGOSIANS ON THE APRIL 11 2015 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTIONS Dear Lagosians, First let me thank you all for turning out to vote on the 28th March 2015 and for doing so peacefully to make history by electing the All Progressives Congress candidates in the Presidential and National Assembly elections. Once again, I must address you as we approach Saturday’s elections, when you will be electing a Governor who will continue after me and consolidate on the progress we have built together. You will also be electing members of the State House of Assembly who will make laws on your behalf to assist the Governor and his team in the Executive arm. Although your votes will be cast for one political party or the other, let me remind you that you will actually be voting for your wellbeing, security, prosperity and future. You will also be voting for the future of your children. You will be choosing candidates and a party that you will entrust your lives to. Think hard, think clearly, think deeply. Ask yourselves a few questions. Who has shown a better record and example of protecting and securing you between the political parties? Which of the parties cares more when disasters happen? What is the record of the parties as it relates to the promises they have made to you in the past? Which of the parties do you see regularly and which one do you see once in a while? Which of the parties do you see when your life or property is threatened by epidemics like Ebola or by unfortunate accidents like plane crashes? Which of the parties is showing that you can become home-owners without knowing anybody? Which party has responsibility for providing electricity for you, and which one is taking up the responsibility to light up your streets and communities at night? Which of them cares more about your children and their safety? Indeed ask yourself; which of the parties threatened you with thugs on that sad Monday of March 16th and which is seeking to protect you by supporting the police; with patrol vehicles, fuel and other equipment? Ask yourself when last you saw the Federal Fire Service in Lagos. The proud men and women of the Lagos State Fire Service have taken over admirably. Ask yourself who should be supporting the police and who is actually doing it? Dear Lagosians, your choice of who to vote for will be easy if you answer these questions within yourself honestly. Indeed, you have clear choices to make between parties that use your resources to develop your society and community on the one hand, and the party that chooses to bring money to you for distribution when election beckons. So you can choose between schools for your children, hospitals for your community, roads for your transportation or in the alternative, you can choose to have these services monetized once in four years. Remember, that choices have consequences and your vote will decide the choice that shapes your lives. Dear Lagosians, it is tempting to take the right and opportunity to vote for granted. It is tempting to think that it is too much trouble. I agree that the process can be made much easier. But it is no excuse to refuse to vote. Out of 5.8 million registered voters and 3.8 million PVC collections, only about 1.5 million turned out to vote, on the 28th March 2015. Think of all the pain, the effort, the sleepless nights it took to get the PVCs to you. Think of the best way to show that the effort was not wasted or in vain. It seems to me that the best way is to have all these 3.8 Million voters come out to vote. By refusing to vote, you surrender decision making to a few and you will be bound by the consequences of your choices. By refusing to vote, you do a great disservice to many who have lived before you, who fought very hard at great personal costs to themselves, to earn you this right. By refusing to vote, you dishonour the sacrifice of patriots before you who fought for the right to vote. Remember that when they were fighting for the right to vote, they were not fighting for yesterday, they were fighting for today and tomorrow. They have handed today to you and I, can we secure tomorrow for the next generation? Remember that since the capital of Nigeria was moved from Lagos 24 years ago in December 1991, Lagos has been abandoned by the Federal Government. Ask yourself when the last major new road in Lagos was built by the Federal Government. It was the 3rd Mainland Bridge completed in 1990. The assets the Federal Government left behind almost became a burden but for our resilience to maintain them. Today the Federal Government is owing Lagos N51 Billion which remains unpaid. This is not in accord with the spirit of the promise made to Lagos when the Federal Government first declared Abuja as the capital in 1976. The Head-of-State at the time, the late Gen Murtala Muhammed, said then and I quote him: “…Lagos will, in the foreseeable future, remain the nation’s commercial capital and one of its nerve centres. But in terms of servicing the present infrastructure alone the committed amount of money and effort required will be such that Lagos State will not be ready to cope. (But we have coped at great sacrifice) “It will even be unfair to expect the state to bear this heavy burden on its own. It is therefore necessary for the Federal Government to continue to sustain the substantial investment in the area. The port facilities and other economic activities in the Lagos area have to be expanded. “There is need in the circumstances for the Federal Government to maintain a special defence and security arrangement in Lagos which will henceforth be designated a special area. These arrangements will be carefully worked out and written into the new constitution. Kaduna and Port Harcourt are to be accorded similar status and designated as Special Areas…” Sadly, no Federal Government and indeed not the PDP Government has done anything to redeem that promise for the 16 years it was in power or to protect Lagos. Instead of assisting Lagos, they attacked her. If you remember FERMA, in 2006, the same PDP seized your Local Government money and resisted the attempt to bring Government closer to you by creating more local Governments. On Monday 16th March 2015, the same PDP continued in their tradition of assaulting Lagos. Their supporters took over a major road in Lagos and threatened your peace and security. On Wednesday 18th March 2015, the President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari came to Lagos and said Lagos will receive compensation for the role she has played in maintaining Federal Government Assets. Yesterday on Tuesday the 7th of April 2015, he was here in Lagos in his first political engagement since he became President-Elect and he reiterated his commitment to support Lagos. This is what I will vote for. This is what I urge you to think about as you vote on Saturday. This is the place that every Nigerian calls his home. It is the home of displaced people. It is the place where the homeless arrive and are made welcome. It is the place where generations of Nigerians have arrived without knowing anybody but have, through the opportunities and inclusion, become somebody. This is the place where the Late Chief Adeniran Ogunsanya and Owelle Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe consummated the handshake across the Niger and played politics without bitterness. Tell those who try to divide us that our greatest strength has always been our diversity. Tell them that you feel safe here, and that I have continuously assured you of your safety as the basis of our mutual co-existence. Tell them that our waterways have been assets of prosperity and sustenance, for transport, recreation and fishing and they will remain so. Let nobody now attempt to re-write that history for you. When they reel out false statistics about Lagos, please ask them the statistics about the places they governed for 16 years. When they reel out statistics, please remind them that those statistics don’t stand in isolation, they are the burden of a whole nation and many parts of West Africa that Lagos state bears. When they promise you heaven and earth, remember their broken promises on power, security and many more. Ask them to show you a plan, if they can produce one, which is doubtful, ask them whether they have implemented it elsewhere. Tell them that you have seen the Lagos Development plan for 2012 – 2025, that the Lagos Light Rail Project, the Adiyan Water Works Phase II of 75 Million gallons a day, the solar power for all schools and many more which are part of the plans for you and your children and which are already being implemented. Tell them that you will vote to keep a plan that you can see, that is already working, instead of a plan that you have not seen. Ask them what happened to Vision 20:20, to the 7-Point Agenda and to Transformation. Tell them that your bird in hand will not be traded for a dozen unseen birds in the bush. Tell them that this election is not about money, tell them that it is not about ethnicity and it is not about religion. Tell them that this election is about the place you call your home, the place you earn your living and the place where your investments are the safest. Tell them that you will not play ethnic or religious politics with your survival. Tell them that you will not vote with anger. Tell them that you will vote with common sense and for experience. Tell them that you have seen Lagos survive without Federal support, and you wish to see her flourish with Federal support. That will be the most historic thing you will have done, putting Lagos in the centre with your votes. History and tomorrow beckons. Don’t turn your backs. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN Governor of Lagos State. |
In his most recent column for Saturday Sun titled Press Clips, veteran Nigerian journalist Mike Awoyinfa chronicled Redeemed Pastor J.T. Kalejaiye’s explosive sermon last Sunday in which he appeared to be canvassing support for the APC Buhari-Osinbajo ticket come February 2015. In his message, Pastor Adeboye’s close confidant and touted to be among the favourites to one day take over Redeemed Christian Church Of God (RCCG) predicted ‘there would be a pleasant surprise in 2015 elections’, telling congregants to ‘go and mark it’. Sounding angry with the way Nigeria is going, Pastor Kalejaiye, regional evangelist of RCCG fumed: “Of what use is my brother, my blood brother who is not going to move the nation forward? And you want me to vote for him because he is my brother? Don’t let us deceive ourselves.” “What are we saying? Let’s call a spade a spade, brethren. Things cannot continue this way. Corruption is the order of the day. You can steal and nothing will follow. That’s all… Brethren, if you don’t do something, something will do you. Wake up!” He continued, “We have to change our system… Who is a Christian? Who is a Muslim? When I was working somewhere, my boss was a Muslim. I enjoyed under him. My boss provoked me to study further. My boss was always after my welfare. It shall be well him wherever he is today. He is a Muslim. The soldier attached to me was with me for almost 15 years. I never knew he was a Muslim. The day he opened his mouth to say “Sir, I am Muslim,” I said “What? But you follow me to the camp. You do this, you do that.” He said that when it was time to pray he would pray. “Brethren, wake up! Who is a Christian? That somebody goes to church doesn’t make him a Christian. That somebody bears Christian name doesn’t make him a Christian. You are a Christian yet there is no employment for our youths. People who should be feeding their parents are still being fed by their parents. How many youths can get married today without the support of their parents financially? During our own time, we did our wedding, we only called our parents to come and eat. Today, our children who are 35, we are still feeding them." It looks like the message of CHANGE is really spreading fast! |
"Religion is a personal thing and every man has the right to choose his own, or practice it the way he likes. Most of the sycophants that use religion to defame the character of Buhari are not even practicing their acclaimed self righteousness. Many of them are occultists. They kill and conduct daily human sacrifices to remain in power. Buhari is a man of integrity and I respect him a lot. But because majority of those who have looted this country to poverty are afraid to end up in jail or loose their ill gotten wealth, they chose to fabricate lies against Buhari. They hire hungry and morally corrupted scholars to do the dirty jobs on their behalf. It is quite unfortunate that Nigerians buy all the lies they trade through the media. This is the only country where people prefer to believe in a hear say than make a research. Only a minute population of Nigerians are willing to investigate an allegation before they draw conclusions. Nigerians have resolved to be praise singers to corrupt leaders. We have failed to ask for accountability. Our conscience has been beclouded with religious and ethnic sentiments. Our sense of judgement and reason have been blinded by poverty. We chose to mortgage our tomorrow and the future of our children for the rice and a few Naira notes they share during elections. All we believe is the roads, the bridges, the railways, the electricity they build only on televisions. I always ask my self these questions: 1. Where are the roads? The Abuja - Lokoja road was awarded by Obasanjo's administration. He spent 8 years in the office. Then Yaradua and Goodluck spent another 4 years. Now if Goodluck is elected, he will be spending another 8 years. This will amount to 20 years and 180 km road is yet to be completed. Enugu - Onitsha road was also awarded by the Obasanjo administration and till date, a journey that is supposed to take 45 minutes can take you 8 hours if it rains. Enugu- PH road is on the same series. What about Uyo - Calabar route? Just to mention a few. 2. Where is the power? They sold all the NEPA to their friends. We pay for the light that was not supplied. 3. Our education and health system go bad everyday. Lecturers and Health workers spent more time at home than in the schools and hospitals as a result of incessant strikes. 4. The government failed to provide us with security. People are being killed everyday and yet government comes out to tell us they are in control. 4. Why are we pretending that all is well? It is only in Nigeria where monies develop wings and fly. $20 billion oil money disappeared and they said it was $10 billion. Forensic investigators were hired and that was the end of the story. N20 billion pension fund stolen and nothing came out of it. $9.3 million seized in South Africa and government claimed it was meant for ammunition purchase. The immigration scandal has also been swept under the carpet because the senate could not proceed with their investigation. The man behind the contract is sitting among the high seats in the senate. Innocent people were defrauded and they at the same time lost their lives yet, we have a transparent governance. 5. Why are we praising government as if they are doing whatever with their personal money. How many people in their various communities have they provided scholarship with their personal money before they got elected? The reason they got elected is to manage our resources and not to loot us dry. One thing I know is that we will not have any meaningful development except if we make a change. Age or no age, Buhari is a better option for the present day Nigeria" |
A People Democratic Party, PDP, House of Representative aspirant, Aisha Osori, has denounced the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, after emerging winner on the platform of the PDP. Ms. Osori made the announcement on Tuesday in Abuja while briefing journalists at the APC national secretariat. Ms. Osori emerged winner at the recent AMAC/Bwari federal constituency primary in the Federal Capital Territory. Aisha Ofori Ms. Osori, who was presented with the membership card of the APC, told journalists she decided to defect after watching the APC primary because she believed in APC’s vice presidential candidate, Yemi Osibanjo, who was her lecturer at one time. “I decided to denounce membership after watching the APC conduct its presidential primary in a fair and competitive manner and after seeing the combination of Osibanjo and Buhari, both men of integrity,” Ms. Osori said. “Osibanjo used to teach me at the University of Lagos, faculty of law, I believe that is a great combination that would move the country forward and I want to be part of that team,’’ she said. According to her, the APC slogan “Change” is enough reason to support the party as she was sure of winning the on the platform of APC. Ms. Osori noted that more than 70 per cent of Nigerians were youth who wanted the change that “APC represents’’. On what her contribution would be to ensure the success of the APC at the general elections, Ms. Osori, who leads the non-governmental organization, Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund, cited experience. “The years of experience I garnered in the private sector as a lawyer and also as writer, first with Thisday and later with Leadership newspapers, will be of value to APC. Reacting to the defection, the APC National Secretary, Mai-Mala Buni, who presented the membership card to Ms. Osori, expressed delight because his party was waxing stronger by the day. “Such event will be a continuous thing. Our doors are open. Everybody, who is ready to join the party, is welcome anytime, any day,’’ he said. (NAN) |

The House of Representatives yesterday reacted to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s, position that the Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, should resign following his defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC. The House said that there were no bases for that since Tambuwal was elected as Speaker by his colleagues. It explained that the Speakership of the House, or any other national elective position, belongs to Nigerians and not the political platforms upon which such leaders emerge. A statement by the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs Matters, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, stated that nobody could regulate the operation and procedure of the House from outside. He expressed concern that less than 24 hours after Tambuwal’s defection, individuals, party chieftains and groups had gone on frenzy, dishing out varied interpretations to the decision. He said: “Many of these commentators, rather than correctly stating what the true position of the law and the House rules are, take delight in advertising ignorance of both with some even advocating a recourse to anarchy as a way of achieving what they imagine ought to be the ‘solution’ to the issue. “Following several inquiries by journalists and some members of the public, it is easy to narrow the concerns to two key issues. One, whether Speaker Tambuwal ought to vacate his seat as representative of Kebbe/ Tambuwal Federal Constituency, Sokoto State, by virtue of Section 68 (1) (g), of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, as amended; and two, if he shouldn’t step down as Speaker, having defected from the majority party in the House to a minority platform.” The lawmaker also explained that on the first issue, it was common knowledge that following the defection of 37 members of the House in December 2013 from the PDP to APC, there had been multiple court cases on the matter, rendering it subjudice to discuss any likely outcome. He, however, advised Nigerians to await final judicial pronouncement on the issue of defection, which had afflicted virtually all political parties. Citing the case of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who as a sitting Vice- President moved to another political party, Ogene stated the vicepresident did not get judicial reprobation for the act. He added that the clear provisions of Section 50(1) (b) of the Nigerian Constitution easily settle the worries regarding the continued Speakership of Tambuwal. Quoting the law, he said: “There shall be a Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves. “It would, therefore, amount to an affront on members’ privilege to question their constitutionallyguaranteed right to freely elect their leader. “Additionally, Order 1 Rule 1 (2) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives states: “In all cases not provided for hereinafter, or by sectional or other orders, precedents or practices of the House, the House shall by resolution regulate its procedure. “It is in the light of the foregoing that the House wishes to appeal to those who seek to “regulate its procedure” from outside its hallowed chambers to have a rethink, as the nation’s Constitution, the Standing Orders of the House and precedent – as in the Speakership of the late Hon. Edwin Ume-Ezeoke in the Second Republic on a minority platform – have all provided answers to what would have otherwise been a knotty political issue.” http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/tambuwal-remains-speaker-house-tells-pdp-others/ |
Rexxie:The president has committed a lot of impeachable offenses, and this is not an exception. He has never apologized for all these nor deemed it fit to resign for poor performance. Yet, u r here advising Tambuwal to resign cause he changed to the party of the people of his constituency who voted him to d house in d first place. |
