Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been diagnosed as suffering from malaria. The Ivory Coast frontman was thought to have been suffering from a virus in recent weeks but blood tests revealed it was the tropical disease. Drogba was left out of the starting line-up for the 2-0 defeat at Liverpool but came on as a second-half substitute after complaining of a fever on the eve of the match. "We found out (on Monday night) when blood tests showed he had malaria," said Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti. "I don't know where he got it from." LOST POWER Despite suffering from the disease, Drogba will start against Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. "He had a problem," added Ancelotti. "He has this virus and, obviously, he lost power and training. "He lost his condition. He's had treatment and now he's OK. He'll come back immediately in the best condition. "He suffered, obviously, because he wasn't 100 per cent but now, after treatment, he'll be better. He had malaria. He had the tests in the last day, and they showed this kind of virus. Now he's good. "I don't know where he got it from. I gave him a few days off and he went on holiday for a few days, and then he has malaria. But it's over now. He's OK."

hana striker Asamoah Gyan and compatriots Andre Ayew and Kevin-Prince Boateng have been named in CAF’s ten-man shortlist for the 2010 Player of the Year award. The nominees were determined by the Media, Technical and Football Committees of CAF taking into consideration the performance of the players during the year under review from January-November 2010. The list was released on Saturday night with the Sunderland striker Gyan, a genuine contender for the prestigious individual accolade. The 24-year-old was Ghana’s top scorer at this year’s Nations Cup finals in Angola and propelled the Black Stars to the final only to lose to eventual winners Egypt. Gyan replicated that form at the World Cup six months later by scoring a crucial extra-time goal against USA to progress to the quarter-final. He later missed a penalty at the death of the game in extra-time and Ghana were eventually eliminated by Uruguay via penalty shoot-out. Then with French Ligue 1 side Rennes, he netted 13 goals. But Gyan faces competition from Ivory Coast captain and Chelsea forward Didier Drogba and Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’O Fils who all had relatively quiet Nations Cup and World Cup campaigns. Ayew, 20, son of the African football legend has been rewarded for his impressive showcase at the Nations Cup and World Cup. AC Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, who switched nationality to play for the West African country before the World Cup, made the preliminary cut. For the 2010 Player of the Year Award, the nominees are (in alphabetical order): Ahmed Hassan (Al-Ahly and Egypt), Andre Ayew (Olympique Marseille and Ghana), Kevin Prince Boateng (AC Milan and Ghana), Madjid Bougherra (Rangers and Algeria), Didier Drogba (Chelsea and Cote d’Ivoire), Samuel Eto’o Fils (Inter Milan and Cameroon), Mohamed Nagy ‘Gedo’ (Al-Ahly and Egypt), Asamoah Gyan (Sunderland and Ghana), Salomon Kalou (Chelsea and Cote d’Ivoire), and Seydou Keita (Barcelona and Mali). The contenders for the 2010 African-based Player of the Year are: Ahmed Hassan (Al-Ahly and Egypt), Oussama Darragi (Esperance and Tunisia), Alain Kaluyituka Dioko (TP Mazembe and DR Congo), Michael Eneramo (Esperance and Nigeria) and Mohamed Nagy ‘Gedo’ (Al-Ahly and Egypt). The winner of each category will be decided by votes from the respective senior national teams’ head coaches or technical directors of the 53 National Associations affiliated to CAF. The Awards Gala 2010 will be held on 20 December, 2010 in Cairo, Egypt.

A 56-year-old man, John Oromoro, is in police custody for allegedly killing his pastor, Ben Ojinaka. The incident happened on Sunday, September 19th at Jakande Estate, Ajangbadi. Mr Oromoro said the pastor of Jesus Power Ministry, Benjamin Ojinaka, 45, allegedly raped his 15-year-old daughter in July this year. He said he went to confront the pastor on the allegation that it was his daughter that lured him to have sex with him when a fight ensued between them that led to the pastor’s death. “I be tanker driver,” he said. “The thing wey happen na since more than one month ago. My daughter, wen be the last born of my fourteen children get marine spirit. Pastor Ben come say him fit deliver her. Na me and pastor na we form the church together, so na so pastor come dey carry her go for deliverance.” Scandal and death Mr Oromoro stated that his daughter was eventually delivered of the ‘spirits’ but he noticed she kept going back to church after the deliverance. “Later my daughter come refused to go church; after I ask her many times, she come confessed say pastor Ben rape her for inside my house one day during deliverance,” he said. “I come vex, go meet pastor. Him come tell me make I forgive am say na devil work, I vex but I come forgive pastor.” He said he then heard rumours of the pastor claiming that his daughter lured him to have sex with him. “When I hear say pastor dey tell people say na my daughter rape am, I come go him house on Sunday go ask am say why him dey spoil my daughter name,” he said. “Him tell me to get out from him house , I come vex, we come dey fight. Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan has defended Sir Alex Ferguson's absence during their 5-2 Carling Cup third round victory at Scunthorpe. Ferguson missed only his third match since becoming United manager in 1986 to watch Valencia in Spain, their next opponents in the Champions League. "We put a big value on the Carling Cup," said Phelan. "We've never set out to demean the competition. "It's important we prepare properly for the Valencia game and look at them." Phelan added: "Valencia have started their season very well and it was important after the draw with Rangers that we got a good view of them. "The manager chose to go and watch the Valencia game. We need to go there knowing what we're up against. He's the manager and he had to make a decision. "We're holders of the Carling Cup, we've done that two years in a row and you can see from the players' attitude that we want to keep hold of it." 606: DEBATE We won, we scored quite a few goals and in the end were quite comfortable. But HUGE credit to Scunthorpe! They were magnificent Muffin McLovin Despite the absence of Ferguson and the fact that United made 11 changes after their 3-2 Premier League win against Liverpool on Sunday, they cruised to victory at Glanford Park after going a goal down, with Darron Gibson, Chris Smalling, a Michael Owen brace and Park Ji-Sung doing the damage. "I thought Scunthorpe played their part in a very, very good game," said Phelan. "They created plenty of opportunities, even when we managed to get it to 5-1 I think we'd had about six chances. "Overall it's a great scoreline from our point of view because it was a new team out there put together in a couple of days, and Scunthorpe should take a lot of pride and credit from the game." Scunthorpe caretaker manager Ian Baraclough was left to rue his side's bad luck as they found United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak in fine form. "It could have been so different but it wasn't to be," said Baraclough. "The lads won't be too down about it, I won't let them be. "Manchester United finished clinically. I've just been told we had 25 efforts on goal, we've made their keeper work 14 or 15 times. I couldn't fault the lads, we just kept going forwards, but we left ourselves open a bit." |

House! Please, Nigerians wants to know the best Nigerian President. Please, according to your own view, arrange them from the best to the worst. Nigeria's Leaders From Independence (1960) till Date 1960 - 1975 Tafawa Balewa, Prime Minister 1960-1966 Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, Head of State 1966 Gen Yakubu Gowon, Head of State 1966-1975 Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, President (Ceremonial) 1960-1966 Gen. Murtala Mohammed, Head of State, 1975-1976 Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, Head of State 1976-1979 Alhadji Shehu Shagari, President, 1979 -1983 Gen.Mohammad Buhari, Head of State 1983-1985 Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Head of State, 1985-1993 Chief Ernest Shonekan, President 1993 Gen. Sani Abacha, Head of State 1993-1998 Gen. Abubakar, Head of State, 1998-1999 Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, President, 1999 -2007 Alh Umar Musa Yar-Adua President 2007 - 2010 Goodluck Ebele Jonathan President 2010-Date |
Going by the original plan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the whistle for full blown political activities would only be allowed from the next quarter of this year. This was the unwritten directive of President Umaru Yar’Adua to the PDP members at the special National Convention of the party, which held April 20, 2009, in Abuja. Apparently worried by the growing signs of disruptive political activities among party members around the country, President Yar’Adua had told party delegates who had gathered to endorse the amendments proposed for the PDP’s constitution, that, if allowed to continue, such activities would be a distraction to the government at various levels. The directive was hardly contested even though it poured cold water on the premature ambitions of both elected and appointed officers who were, at that time, already warming up to contest for various positions in the 2011 general election. Once the breaks were applied on the political activities, these officers were supposedly able to rediscover their focus and went about carrying out the responsibilities demanded by their positions. What would have become of the government and the country by now is better imagined if the gathering storm of electioneering had not dissipated with the pronouncement of President Yar’Adua at the time. The first quarter of the year is just about to end, but there is yet no indication that the PDP would be lifting the self-imposed ban on such activities soon. Former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, now seems to have run out of patience with the party and has gone ahead to initiate serious moves in his attempt to return to Aso Rock Villa which he left in 1993, obviously in a hurry. He, currently is engaged in massive consultations with his former colleagues, friends and political associates across the country and engendering in its wake equally massive reaction positive and negative. There is little doubt that he has a huge number of sympathisers who are gladdened by the news of his return to active politics and possibly, a return to the Presidential Villa. In the same way, the thought of IBB in politics has stirred up bile in many others who blame many of the country’s woes on his indiscretions in his previous reign, not least the turbulence that accompanied his annulment of the 1993 presidential election, an election that was adjudged the fairest yet in the country, which the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola was poised to win. But all these are not the real concern here. What worries some Nigerians is the possible adverse effect IBB’s present activities will have on the tenuous political situation in the country which is lacking a substantive president so close to an election year. The PDP National Chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, has indicated that the North would retain the presidency in next year’s election. Going by his controversial remark on the issue, it could be said that IBB qualifies to aspire to the position. But during the 2006/2007 presidential primary of the PDP, even though it was zoned to the North, the party threw the contest open and a southerner was poised to emerge as the preferred candidate until incumbent President Olusegun Obasanjo intervened in the process and planted Alhaji Yar’Adua. If one was to go by that also, a repeat of it cannot be ruled out at this time, especially with the presence of President Yar’Adua’s vice as the acting president. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan will feel justified to ask for the opportunity having been on the ticket in the previous election as running mate. Some would say why not because if by any chance, his principal is unable to continue in office as it is in this case, common sense and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would ordinarily dictate that he steps into his shoes. So far, he has neither indicated that he will do so with the coming election nor has he ruled out the possibility. What this means is that should Acting President Jonathan nurse the ambition, IBB’s head start would constitute a source of tension in his camp as much as it would be a distraction to the ability of the government in its present push to improve things in the country. http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/inside-aso-rock/4441-2011-jonathan-and-ibb |
Eagles Star: “I Was Born With It” FOOTBALL: Super Eagles midfielder,John Mikel Obi has been adjudged the best passer of the ball so far in the English Premier League, according to the statistics released by the premier league board just before Chelsea hammered Blackpool 4-0 at the Stamford Bridge in London. The Nigerian, according to the statistics, has completed 299 of 310 attempted, a completion rate of 96 percent – three percent higher than Arsenal’s Abou Diaby, and seven percent greater than Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher, his nearest rivals in the holding midfield role. And all watchers of the EPL this term seem in agreement that the 23-year-old Eagles star has upped his game in 2010/11. Upon discovering the statistics, the midfielder was as shocked as he was impressed. ‘No?! 96?! Wow!’ he laughed. ‘It’s good isn’t it? It is a surprise, but I know that passing, even when I was little, was the thing I had, I hardly gave the ball away in youth football. ‘When I came into senior football and at a higher level in competitive games I started to give passes away. Since coming into the Premier League it has been harder.’ He believes it is testament to how well the whole side has begun the campaign, with 17 goals scored in our four matches to date, and just one conceded. ‘It shows how good Chelsea are at the moment, it is not just me,’ Mikel said.’Everyone is working hard, pre-season was misleading because we lost a few games, people were coming back from the World Cup at different times, but now is the most important time and we’re very fit, playing well and happy.’ Mikel has long been a fan of the possession games played by both Arsenal and Barcelona (Barça had 74 percent possession against Panathinaikos in midweek, compared with our 53 percent against Zilina), and while they are impressive, he believes it is Chelsea that are the best side to watch at the moment due to our more attacking, dynamic approach. ‘The styles of football are different, they do play more of the ball, more passes in the midfield, they don’t rush most of the time, and we can do that sometimes, but we play the ball around and can be more physical, we are ready to play any way,’ he argued. So how would he go about trying to stop the Blues were he an opposition manager? ‘I don’t know, it is not for me to worry about!’ smiled the number 12. ‘Most sides try to get men behind the ball and stay deep on the edge of their area, they sit back and it’s not a problem if they lose, they expect to, but they try to make it difficult for us. ‘When we get an early goal it always helps because the game becomes more open. |
Since the death of Ojo Ladiipo (Baba Mero), his boss and mentor, some 32 years ago, he has been saddled with the responsibility of leading the Awada Kerikeri Theatre Group. This, he did for many years until the latest fad of home movies took the better of him and his group members. Today, his name has not only become an household one but some of his children’s too. Adebayo Salami, otherwise called Oga Bello, spoke with CHIOMA AGALI in this interview of his journey into the make- believe world, his childhood, the pains and the gains of the career so far. Excerpts: What has your personal and educational background been like? I was born in Lagos 59 years ago but I am from Kwara state, Ilorin. My parents are both from Ilorin. I had my primary education in Lagos at Ansarudeen, Oke-Ejigbo and my secondary at Adebo commercial school in Lagos. I later went to Lagos drama school created by Christoper Olude. I had all other educational certificates by sandwich and workshops both home and abroad. I got my experience in the industry the practical way and through some books that I read on film production and also also by lectures on the knitty-gritty of the job. I am married and I have wonderful children. Where did you grow up and what fond memories of those years can remember? I grew up on Lagos Island in the midst of many other children but I’m very used to my home town very much. My father died there and my mother is still alive and living there. I love traveling. Growing up in those days was fun because you have a lot of children around. Have you always desire to be in the entertainment industry? I think right from my youth, I have always love anything that has to do with acting. I have been involved in so many activities relating to that on the Island then whenever there were festivals such as Ramadan, Eid-el Fitri and Kabir, Easter and Christmas. Then, we would perform many plays just to entertain and keep people busy. There was a group called Young Stars Concert Party at the back of my school when I was in the elementary school then. Once I heard them rehearsing then, I would peep out of curiosity and longed to be part of what they were doing. Eventually in 1964, I decided to join them and since then, I have been acting. It was this group that later metamorphosed into the Ojo Ladiipo Theartre and Awada Kerikeri Theatre Group respectively. It was led by the late Ojo Ladiipo(Baba Mero). Is the group still functioning? Yes it is but not as a television series as it used to be. I have been in the group all my life and I am still a member till date. What is your relationship with other members of the group? We are all together and whenever there is anything we need to do to represent the group, we, the leaders, will call other members together and we will get things done. How many of your children are in the industry with you now? Five of them are in the industry presently. All of them are graduates. My wife is also into film distribution. Was it your wish that they be with you or their own decision? Well, I think is their wish, ways and interest but they got the trait from me. As a parent, I don’t force my children to do what I know is not their wish or what they don’t like. Even while they were in school, they choose what ever they want to study that they know they are good in doing. Strangely, none of them studied Theatre Arts. 14 of my children are graduates. Femi my son studied law and was called to bar since 2003. He had his masters and he is the only one trying to study Theatre Arts now. The second one is a geologist and is also in the industry working. Two are computer scientists while I have a girl who studied business administration, but is in the marketing section in the industry. How would you describe yourself? I don’t like to describe myself. I prefer people describing me. All I know is that God has been so kind to me. Everything that has been happening to me is by God’s grace. I thank God and all my fans out there who has been supporting me. I started acting at age 12 and all the way, it has been success, I am strong and healthy, I give God all the glory. It is all God’s doing. I am humble and gentle. I am accommodating and I have people around me. There are so many people in my house that I don’t even know where they are from not to talk of who their parents are but they are happy living with me. It has been like that since when I was a bachelor. What were your achievement when you were the President of ANTP? I thank God. First and foremost I remember that it was when I was the President that ANTP gained more recognition than ever. I took ANTP to highest level. It was recognised right from the national level. I took my executives to Aso Rock and we were warmly welcome by the president then-Olusegun Obasanjo. Everything was on the newspaper and he made a promise because during my speech I told him that ANTP should not be sold and he endorsed it. I injected discipline, it was during my tenure that actors and actresses were traveling in and out of the industry through the recommendation I gave to the embassy and with the rapport I had with the embassy then. I was able to make people work and have their money, films were sold and we were recognised all over the world. As at then, we were using the highest technical format of film. I was the one that found the ANTP London chapter. I inaugurated the American chapter. I started working on the acquisition of a film village then, wrote a proposal to the government and they gave us ten acres of land along Badagry express road. I pleaded with the president then and he gave us a letter that he is ready to assist us in building the film village. All these were my achievement from 2001- 2004. What’s the latest on the said village now? I don’t know the exact stage it is now but I think it is under construction, let me put it that way. There is this tussle going on in the movie industry over who the next president will be. What is your take on this? The next president, I believe, is going to be by the choice of God and not anybody. Although we will have those people who will cast their votes and at the same time, people who will make their choice, what we need is somebody who can move the association forward to a better level. What is happening to ANTP now is not peculiar to ANTP alone it also happens in all other organisations and as the issues keep coming, we will be settling it and moving on. What can you say about the Yoruba movie industry now and in future? The Yoruba movie industry as at today is the acceptable film industry in Nigeria at least with the qualities of the movies and with what I injected during my tenure. We have sorted for good location and we are able to produce decent films. We are bent on ensuring that in the industry, there is no junk. If you look inward and trace the history of movies in Nigeria to its origin, you will discover that the Yoruba movie industry kicked it off. Right from the time of Alarinjo, the first Nigerian Yoruba movie, a celluloid, we have started movies. It was the first Nigerian movie in Yoruba. Wole Soyinka produced Kongi Harvest although it was not a commercial film. Ola Balogun produced the first Yoruba movie Ajani Ogun, it is a commercial film. Ija ominira followed, by Dr Balogun’s idea and co-ordinated by late Duro-Ladipo. This was also followed by Taxi driver, Aye and then my own films; Ogun Ajaye, produced in 1985 and Ija Orogun. Which were all in celluloid. So if you start tracing the history of movie industry it all started from Alarinjo- the traveling theatre. I have taken my stage plays round the country and all these was made possible through the traveling theatre. We own it and that is why we are improving on it, we carry our audience along. The situation I am looking at is the standard of Hollywood. All what we are doing is our own efforts, no support from the government, government is still looking at the film industry as an unserious industry. I must confess to you that if we are well handled and looked into, it is going to be second to the oil resource in the country. In India, what do they have? It is the film industry they depend on. Even the American government won’t put aside the film industry. So, if the government can support us, we will go places. Haven’t you approached them on this? We do seek for their help time after time, but like you and I know, there are always delay in government arrangement. They inaugurated a committee so that all of us will be able to speak from one voice but you see this has posed a problem as we don’t speak from one voice and that is what is affecting us. We have the Hausa section, the Igbo section and the Yoruba section and they want all of us to come together and speak from one voice, who will the government to listen to? They created a body called Motion Pictures National Committee(MOPICON), to work out the mortality on how it can work and I was opportuned to be a member of the committee. And how has the committee fared? They are trying to see that everything works out well. We have done the recommendations and administrative part of it and all that we think can make the the body move on well. It is left for them now to pass it to the House of Assembly. Since we don’t have much here and we are rated number three that means that if we have all the facilities needed, we will move on. Who is Adebayo salami outside the screen? I don’t like noise because I am a very quiet person, easy going. I don’t like any thing flamboyant, I like a very simple life. How do you cope with the enormous task of being an actor and a father of a large home? It depends on how you are able to organise yourself. You have to organise your life, I have been a leader in my community, leader in the industry and even in the country in a way and in my family. So, all I do is to organise it in a way that it will be convenient for me. I love my children and my children love me. I have a lot of them, all grown up now to the glory of God. You said you have a lot of children, how many wives do you have? Laughing! I have wives. Don’t worry about that. What got you attracted to those your wives? What I wanted in my life was one wife but when everything happened I knew It was destined to be so. All my life and as at the time this was happening, I was asking myself whether I was going out of my senses. But somehow, everything kept moving well and I realised that it was destined to be so. I have been in this for years now and I have no regret or any form of disappointment from any of my children. Education or character wise, they are all calm and religious. I thank almighty Allah and that is why I believe it was nothing but destiny. Who are your mentors? Well, coming to the film industry I already have the passion for acting which was the basic urge that I need to go on with my choice. I watched a programme on the television once by the late Hubert Ogunde titled The foolish doctor and it gave me the inspiration to become an actor. There was also Ayinla Olumegbon, who is late now, they used to rehearse at a place Jekerando compound near our place. I have another mentor who is a lawyer. I worked with him in the Federal Ministry of Works when I finished my education between 1970-1974. I joined them as a library attendant, from there, I was transferred to the office of the minister, Alhaji Femi Okunnu who made me his personal assistant. He is one of my mentors. What are the challenges you face in the industry? I can not count them, but I thank God that I have been able to overcome them. I don’t need to recall them. It is a thing of the past because I have faced a lot of challenges. Do you have any new project that you are working on now? I have a lot that I’m working on now. Emi-Abata is now on the stage of post production and will be premiered during the Ileya festival at the National Theatre. There is a rumour going on that Femi Adebayo is going out with Funke Akindele. How true is it? I don’t want to talk about that because my son is old enough to know what is good for him and both of them are grown up. They can speak for themselves. Is it true that in the Yoruba movie industry that rob my back, I rob your back is the order of practice? Yes, it is true. That is the Yoruba style. Don’t you think this has posed a kind of set back for many actors and actresses|? It is not true because by every judgment, the Yoruba movie industry is even growing. Yes, I will tell you how. We have this culture of unity among ourselves, it is a culture of love and assistance among ourselves. We do the rob- my- back, I- rob- your- back business but with some payment. It is not as if we don’t pay at all. The idea is all about standing in for a brother and a sister in time of need and this, you tend to reap when your own time comes. The money might not be much but you gain more experience. It has been in existence for a long while now and we do it once or twice and not really all the time. As an actor how fulfilled are you? I thank God I am very fulfilled? Do you have any regret being an actor? No regret at all. I am an actor, producer and a director. I have every cause to thank Almighty Allah because I am 46 years old in the industry. What has kept you going? Honesty, hard work, patience and lots more. If God gives you work to do, he will give you all what you need to complete the work. What are the things you would love that acting has denied you? A lot, I can’t go to the market to buy anything. I can’t work on the street any more. If I go to party I have to sneak in because if I don’t, I will have to greet everybody. I can’t go shopping for myself except I send somebody. What advice do you have for the upcoming ones? I will just tell them to make sure they go to school because education is the key. They should join a group to actually learn practically and be focused.

Saidi Balogun is one of the most familiar faces in the movie industry in Nigeria. But like other things that go with fame, he is trailed by a lorry load of stories. He speaks with ‘NONYE BEN-NWANKWO about his career and what his ex-wife, Fathia, must do if she wants to keep Balogun as her surname. You once said you were going to do a two-cast movie. Did you eventually do it? I did a two-cast, Mo dupe Temi, in Yoruba. I did another one in English. It is titled You or I? It is yet to be released. I wanted to get it across the border. Again, the film is also in audio. Is that really possible? Oh yes! Some people asked the same question before the movie came out. How come you are always coming up with such ideas? The people who buy our movies are not fools. We should be creative in this country. We should think deep and be vast. How did this idea of a two-cast movie come about? One day, I was sitting down and a good friend of mine inspired me. He asked me about my goal and I told him I wanted to break records. I sat down and I thought of it and went to work. But would you rate the movie a commercial success? At the beginning, the marketing was very slow. But it has been settled now. The movie has taken me to where I wanted. I made a statement. I became the first to do a two-cast movie in Nigeria, if not in Africa. Till kingdom comes, my name will be written as the first to achieve that. How come the movie is yet to win any award, as novel as the idea is? That is a comical thing. I have won only one award with it. It won an award outside Nigeria, but in the country where the movie was made, it is yet to win any award. Where are we going in this country? Anyway, those who give awards in this country will soon get there. They are not there yet. Don‘t let us dwell on that. Now that you have set the record of a two-cast movie, are your dreaming of another idea? Oh yes. I am doing another movie titled Ankara. The movie was shot in America. Everybody in the movie wore Ankara. You have to think differently. Kate Henshaw stole the show in the movie. She gave me the depth of acting anybody could think of. Thank God for companies like Unilever and Lupcon. They gave us some support. People said they had gone to Lupcon, but they were not given any support. But I tell them that if they give somebody a good product, the person will support them. I have just finished a one-cast movie as well. Did you say one-cast? That would be boring, No way! I did it. And it is not like newscasting or a documentary. It is a movie. I am sick of doing movies that are not challenging. You have to encourage those who think deep. Don‘t encourage the noise makers. How come you have not been doing much of English movies? I have just done one apart from You and I. It is called The Rider. It is a comedy. But then, a movie has no language. If you can watch an Indian movie that is not subtitled and yet you find it interesting, you can watch any movie not minding the language. Since you had an accident, you seem to have become more successful in your career. Will it be wrong to say that the accident enhanced your growth? No and yes. What do you mean? No in the sense that I have always had my goal and target. The Managing Director of Lupcon told me about five years ago to set a target for myself. I set the target before the accident. The accident drew me back a little. But then, I didn‘t allow anything to distract me. I had to remain focused. But you seem to be associated with a lot of scandals. How come you are still able to rise above the scandals? I live by that grace and the grace of Almighty God. I was chosen to be great. I cannot deviate from that. I don‘t allow scandals to affect me. I see myself as a white cloth in the dark. Can you put a white cloth in the dark and you will not see it? No way! Am I the only actor who is divorced? No! A story just broke about you and one actress. They said your ex-wife was fighting the actress because of you. I heard of it. One magazine even published it. But what can I do? I cannot fight them. In the past four years, one story or the other has been written about me every week. Are you saying the two women are not fighting over you? I want to see money fighting over me. I still thank God Almighty. If you are walking on the streets and some people are talking about you, you have to thank God. There are people who are running but nobody is looking at them. I have left people who talk and write what they want about me. But my plea is that they should verify first. If I were to sue people, I would be living in the court. One magazine went to the extent of writing my house address when my car was stolen. Is he not inviting thieves to come and finish the job? Have you seen your car? No. It is still hanging. So what are you using now? Okada. If they steal my car, do you expect me to be riding planes? But we learnt you bought a car for a woman. How can? When I have not replaced the one that was stolen? I don chop? Where I see that kin money? It is not possible. I have gone to the police again to ask them how far they have gone in search of my car. They told me not to worry. Okay-o. I am launching Etiketa on Sept. 26. I want to launch it with the recovery of my car. That is the donation I want the police to give me. Let them help me to recover my car. But now, okada riders are enjoying my patronage. I am enjoying it as well. The breeze on okada is better that air condition. So, you don’t feel bad riding okada? Hypertension will kill you if you start feeling bad. The Lord said you should take it as it comes. Let the guy that is eating gold today get prepared for brass. I take things the way they come. I am a simple guy. I walk on the streets. I eat amala in the buka. I am who I am. You once told us that you were in one relationship. Is it no longer working? You see, you have started asking about my private life. I told you I am a white cloth. My car was snatched in Oshodi. Another one was snatched in Idumota. I am now alone. I beg, don‘t allow anybody to snatch me as well. Leave my relationship alone for now. The Yoruba movie industry seems to be divided. Which faction do you belong to? Nigerians make the crises. I can wake up tomorrow and form my own association. When there is a central law guiding us, I cannot just wake up and form my own association. The Yoruba have their own guild, the English have their own and the Arewa have their own. Which one do you want the government to associate with? Let us try and do things right. Do you feature in other producers movies or you feature in your movies alone? I act for producers who are good. Would you act with your ex-wife on the same set? If the bill is good, I will do so. Those days, in the beginning, I used to say no for one reason or the other. But now, money is good. If you put the two of us together, don‘t you think it will make noise? Just put the right bill on the table, put the money down and I will do the movie with her. She is my ex. As for my name that she is still answering, the deed will be done soon. The Nigerian law says that after three or four years, you can do something about it. If somebody wants to keep my name, what of the new person coming in? This has nothing to do with grudges. Are you saying she cannot keep your name? She can if the bill is right. How many wives do you want to keep my name? How many wives does the Nigerian law permit us to marry at a time? What does the Nigerian law say about that? But there is this female politician who divorced her husband and still kept her husband‘s name, though the man is dead. Okay, kill me so that you will keep my name. Do you regret the break-up of your marriage? Do I look like somebody who is suffering? When God says yes, nobody can say no. I am happy in the Lord. Great men don‘t stay alone at times. If one door spoils, you remove it and put a better one. I respect women a lot. Remi Adiukwu-Bakere will kill me if I abuse or fight any woman. She will not find it funny. You seem to like Adiukwu-Bakare a lot. You are always talking about her. Oh yes. I like her and her husband a whole lot. Four years ago when I left the hospital and the person who I felt was the back of my bone went away with the same man that sent me on the errand that caused the accident, I would have died. But the Bakares were there. They talked to me and nurtured me. I will not forget them, for they were God sent. When I had the accident, the first two weeks, I was not normal. I was insane. I was a walking corpse. Why won‘t I say thank you to these people? How were you able to survive? I have advisers. Remi Adiukwu said she wanted to run the governorship race. She kept me busy. I was everywhere campaigning for her. After the campaign, the husband told me that he and his wife deliberately kept me busy. I was not myself, so they decided to keep me busy. But today, I am over them. Jani Ibrahim, the Managing Director of Lupcon told me to leave woman matter alone and face my job. These are the people that stood by me. Are you on talking terms with your ex? That is private. My best love now is business. Are you not going to marry again? I told you I am now married to my business. There is love in my life now. Our good Lord said that before the end of the world, eight women will cling to one man. Why then should I die because of one woman? Will you ever marry an actress again? Why not? Is it because they are in the limelight? If you have four boyfriends now, nobody will say anything. Who knows you? But let an actress try it; everybody will explode. I can marry an actress if the person is the right one God has chosen for me.

Terry G Nigerians can now heave a slight sigh of relief. It would appear that all is well with Terry G and his House of Ginjah label mates, despite the accident that left his car a wreck at 3am this morning in Ogba, Ikeja. Below is a message from Terry G’s manager just now circulated to members of the media updating the public on the singer’s situation. “My people, no shaking at all!” The message reads. “This is to confirm that Terry G and some members of House of Ginjah actually had an accident in the early hours of today and to also confirm that they are all very ok now. We thank God for mercies. We will keep you all updated. Thanks for the love. Ayo” Also, his PA, simply known as Uche, whose phone has been unavailable all day finally spoke with us and confirmed the incident. Sounding confused and almost at the point of tears, he stated that the singer is alive and well but is in a “critical condition”, although he would not disclose what hospital he has been admitted to. Already, many have begun to draw analogies with the accident of rapper Da Grin, with entertainment entrepreneur and comedian Tee-A saying on Twitter, “Whatever happens, they must not take terry G to LUTH o!” It will be recalled that the late rapper was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital upon his accident also in the early hours of the morning and he passed away. However, we can take a little comfort in the words of his manager: “They are all very ok now.” #More details as they emerge. NB: Story Updated with Uche’s comment.

Mercy Johnson She is one of the ingenious innards in the Nollywwod, the theatrical and delectable damsel from Kogi State. Mercy Johnson reportedly sounded very angry recently. Her anger spanned across the peddled gossip that one Emeka Duru who happened to be the Production Manager in a film she acted in, titled, “The Maid”, was going everywhere selling her integrity that he was the first to give her the first job – “The Maid”. But vigorously, she denied him, saying that he didn’t give her the first job and had not given her any before. Mercy distanced Duru, saying that he wasn’t the owner of “The Maid” and didn’t own “The Maid” and had no decision in the crew that chosed who acted in the movie and not. “The Made”, she said, was Kenneth Nnebue’s film, a film that not less than 480 girls participated in the audition. Like many people who are intensely fearful of poverty, this Nollywood ingénue said that she loves money so much, because she likes and wants to be comfortable. But, she has a strong different view about money in a relationship. To her, true love should come first in a relationship. But, she swiftly reiterated that relationship should not be all about dating. It is a known issue today that many Nigerian girls, but most especially, Nollywood actresses see dating as one of those world’s enterprise. To them, it is no finance, no romance. But, Mercy though had agreed that dating should not be everything, but money shouldn’t of course be the basis of everything. Sounding clerically like a maddened Pentecostal clergy, she admonished that it is time people began to appreciate their dates: by valuing the ‘person’ in their partners, their charisma, innate qualities and allow their spirits to accept the person first, and should stop concluding first with their imaginations. What many interviewees had shied away from, Mercy Johnson did not. She revealed how she met her fiancé: Odi. She said that it was at a salon; he came to wait for her at the salon he was intimated that she usually goes to. She said that Odi is not the first who had made advances to her; she had received more than enough text messages on her cell phone from men. Buttressing her point, one of the text messages reads: “Oh! I just had a dream and Jesus Christ said you are my wife”. She confessed that as a celeb, it’s very difficult to pick a partner when admirers send such text message, but she has find solace in Odi. She said that her fiancé never told her that he saw “Jesus” that moved him to her, but she likened everything that has brought them together to God. This is coming from Mercy Johnson now that many Nollywood actresses allow make-belief things run into their heads instead of allowing the reality. Many of the actresses are sacrificing love on the altar for money and hardly fall in love. Mercy is not comfortable with that belief, because out there, she said; there are a host of lovers out to showcase their loves. She lengthened her point, saying that she came to realise that everyone has a lover one day that she was driving and saw a blind woman that’s pregnant; what she saw convinced her that there is true love. It is not easy for any successful person to tell the world the source of his or her power, but Mercy did. Mercy said that the Baba who does her “Juju” in Nollywood will never fail her and fade. She confessed that the Baba will always be with her for as far as she lives and that she is not going anywhere. Hear her: “Yes o! (I use Juju). There is Baba somewhere. The only Baba that me, I know, is up there and you know he says when He begins to bless somebody people will begin to ask what is happening. My Baba’s own (Juju) will not fade o!” The lovely Mercy loves her Odi more than words could possibly say, but not that she goes around telling people about him, she said, she only mentions him when she wants to prove a point in a discourse about relationship. Mercy that has grown thick skin about people’s allegation that she sleeps with men in the Nollywood to get roles, said that she now wore this skin because her fiancé is not complaining; the unbridled mouths could have caused her nervesquake if her Odi is complaining; but since he has blinded his eyes, people don’t bother her anymore. On a thought, Mercy said that if people are saying that she’s sleeping with all the big boys in the Nollywood to get roles that, is she as well sleeping with all her fans to buy her films? Though, she didn’t deny the fact that she gets scripts a lot, but disagreed that she is the ‘number one’ in the Nollywood, because she hadn’t got to where she’s walking to. Against that backdrop, since she is still ‘walking’, an observer was keen to understand if she has walked out of her purported marriage as was awash on media, and, she said: “Nobody walked away. I heard about the August 17th gist and the August 27th gist and it’s funny. I know that I mentioned that I am engaged, but I didn’t give a date.” Odimegwu Onwumere, Poet/Author and Media Consultant, is the Founder of Poet Against Child Abuse (PACA), Rivers State.

The recent dily-dallying by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, over the appointment of Samson Siasia as the substantive Super Eagles coach can be attributed to the Glass House’s unreadiness to accept the coach’s monetary demands. Talks between the two parties have since stalled, inspite of previous assurances by the NFF that the appointment would be ratified by the new board which was inaugurated last week. Complete Sports sources in the Glass House who craved anonymity, revealed that the NFF are not favourably disposed to Siasia’s financial demands and believe the former Super Eagles striker is greedy. Siasia is reportedly asking for a monthly salary of $100,000 and a sign-on fee of $1million, which the NFF think is an outrageous demand by a local coach. The NFF are however, proposing only $60,000 and are not prepared to grant a premium according to certain media reports. The stalemate between the two parties has led the NFF to suspend further contract negotiations with Siasia and throw the job open, while assuring that the vacant Super Eagles job would be filled by October 1. Some observers are however not surprised at the NFF’s volte-face, accusing the new board of only using Siasia’s image to push their reappointments on the new board in the first place. It would be recalled that the interim board of the NFF had initially concluded plans to name Siasia as Lars Lagerback’s replacement, while Austin Eguavoen was put in charge of the Eagles in the interim. The NFF have come up with a new excuse which is that of following ‘due process’ in appointing Lagerback’s successor and it remains to be seen if Siasia would still be able to land the plum job. |
