Nigeria might have lost what many considered to be a must-win match against Greece, but coach Lars Lagerback has told FIFA that still being in the hunt for a last 16 place is motivating the Super Eagles ahead of Tuesday's match with Korea Republic. He also insisted that he has been happy with his team's effort and level of performance in each of their first two contests. Looking at the opening defeat to Argentina, a team he described as “one of the best in the world,” the former Sweden boss said he had no regrets, a theme he returned to when conversation switched to the Greek loss, which saw Sani Kaita sent off in the 33rd minute. “It is always easy afterwards to think about, if you’d done that or done that, but you never get the right answer because even if we had done something else, maybe we might have lost by two or three goals instead,” he said. “In a way, you can never say you played well when you lose, but I think the first game [against Argentina], for the most part, the players had a really good game. We had a good team performance and we defended rather well. "In the second game we played exactly the way I wanted in the first 30 minutes until we had the sending off. Then it is always difficult to handle a sending off, maybe we got a little bit too passive, and we should have been a little more aggressive." I’ve never experienced that before, that you have two losses and yet still have a chance to go through.Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback On the Kaita red card, Lagerback rued the match's turning point, particularly as the Nigerians were a goal ahead before succumbing to strikes in either half by the UEFA EURO 2004 champions. He said that they talk about discipline before every match, and he called Kaita “a very good player and a good person,” saying of his moment of madness: “That is something that happens to many people.” The 61-year-old admitted that the Super Eagles were surprised to still be in with a chance of qualifying from Group B. If they beat the South Koreans and Argentina take three points from Greece, the west Africans can qualify for the second round for the third time in their history. “I’ve never experienced that before, that you have two losses and yet still have a chance to go through,” he said. “Of course that has helped us a lot to keep focused on what we are doing. So now we are really looking forward to the game and we can really show how good the Super Eagles are, and I think we can play a really good game against the South Koreans.” Looking ahead to the challenge against the 2002 semi-finalists, who beat Greece before losing to Argentina 4-1, Lagerback said they are a strong team but possess a weakness that the first two games have unearthed. “They run a lot, they have good technical skills, and they are also rather quick, and they want to attack,” he said. “Maybe that is one weakness, the only one that I can find, if you win the ball in good positions and then go for it really quickly then maybe they are a little bit unorganised. “I think that they could be a good style for us to play against, so I’m positive about it, and I think that it could be an interesting game anyway, and hopefully an open and attacking game from both teams.”

I was on phone for 40mins interviewing on of the Super Eagles Official, Me: Good morning sir Official: How are you Me: I learnt that Sani Kaita received more than 1,000 mails of death threat, how do you feel about this? Official: Actually, I felt bad, we all know that Sani has done something wrong, but threats can never be the solution Me: What do you think would be the solution sir and based on this our hope on calculation, do you think it would be possible for Super Eagles to white wash the Korean? Official: Actually, The solution is to embrace the players and encourage them, that would give them more priority to increase their chance of winning, as at this moment, Kanu is not in good mood because of this situation and he actually vow to do anything possible to settle this threats amicably, right now, we added more to our securities, one of the mail Kaita received was that he shouldn't try to come to Nigeria because guys will finish him, everything is destiny, even if kaita is still there, if God say we are going to lose, definitely, no one can stop that, but i believe God is at our side, Based on the hope we have on Argentina, All nigerian believe that, Argentina would definitely beat Greece, but the fact is that we are planning to at least stop the faster korean and find a way to white wash them, eagles spirit is very high as for now and i think we are going to win korea. though, Enyeama has being in tear for the past 2 days, but as for now, hes in good mood and would try the way he used to. Me: After this world cup, would NFF renew lagerback contract to continue to blend this players ones they ddnt play like a professional Official: Matoyeh! You want to offend me, they played like a professional footballer, infact, they tried their best, just that the God of Soccer is not by our side, Based on the coach renewal, we are still debating on that Me: Hope the whole eagles are now training tremendously ? Official: Yes, they are, they are! I believe with this training, Our life will never remain the same again (We laugh) lolMe: Thats good, Nigerian would be glad to see super chicken, huh hun, sorry, super eagles in second round ![]() Official: Dont worry |
World Cup - Nigeria's under-20 coach, John Obuh, has said that the reported death threat sent to Super Eagles midfielder Sani Kaita, will not encourage other players to give their best for the country. After pushing and kicking a Greek opponent, Kaita was shown the red card and the Super Eagles fell apart, losing 2-1 to Greece. Obuh told PANA here that Nigerians were blowing the red-card incident out of proportion, saying that it would affect other players who might want to do their best for the country in years to come. He said: "I don't like what is happening to Kaita. It is as if without him, we cannot win our matches. Of course we know that it was not only the red card that caused our defeat. "But I want to say that the death threats will not help Kaita and may also discourage others. Kaita is human and made a mistake which even world class players of ten fall into. But that should not be the reason everybody should castigate him. "He cannot deliberately set out to kick a player and be given a red card. The way Nigerians are reacting to the incident will not help any player. "We need to be careful about this issue. Let Kaita be forgiven and then he can continue with his football so that other players who aspire to represent Nigeria in future will do so without any problem." |
Dont act, just makesure you speak senses. orelse, you would be banned, ![]() |
Some people dont know how to express themselves, they only have the ability to cause, abuse and destroy, may be that was the way they were brought up |
After a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat by Greece, Nigeria are struggling to keep their heads straight in the aftermath of a contest that slipped through their fingers. Their fortunes went from hopeful to grim in the space of minutes as the very real possibility of moving on to the knockout rounds took a massive knock after a silly red card and a two-goal fightback by the Greeks. However, all is not lost and the men in the camp have refused to throw in the towel in the face of such a serious set-back.Although they also lost their Group B opener 1-0 to Argentina, even a single-goal victory in their final match against Korea Republic and a single-goal loss for Greece against the table-topping Albiceleste would see Nigeria through on goal difference. But no team in FIFA World Cup™ history has ever lost more than one group stage game and gone on to reach the next round, and it was clearly a battle for the typically optimistic Super Eagles to hold out much hope. The manner of defeat against the Greeks was a body blow for Lars Lagerback's side, who went ahead through Kalu Uche's lofted free-kick from out wide in the 16th minute and looked good value for their lead in the first half-hour. But a straight red card for Sani Kaita out of nowhere left the west Africans reeling and struggling to cope with the 2004 European champions. And though one would be hard pressed to argue that Nigeria deserved a point in Bloemfontein, Greece's two goals came from a deflection and a goalkeeping error, so the result could easily have been different even with the red card. It's still very sad. We just have to cheer up and work for the next game. We played very well in two games and lost. We just have to keep working hard and try to be physically and mentally ready. It won't be easy.Nigeria scorer Kalu Uche about the disappointment of their South Africa 2010 campaign so far "We were so sad, so sad," a clearly distraught Uche told FIFA about the sending-off and the result. "That's really all I can say – it was very, very sad. We came out in the second half and tried to fight, but it's not easy to play a man down, and it was difficult to defend against them.” ![]() Big central defender Danny Shittu, who has started both matches in his debut FIFA World Cup campaign, said the Nigerians felt they were bossing the game before the red card. "We came out here today, not even looking for a draw, but looking for a win," said the England-based player. "I think that when it was 1-0 and we had 11 men, we were still pushing forward and we had control of the game. We kind of thought, 'Yeah, this could be it'. As a defender especially you think, 'Look, we can deal with this, and ride it through', but [the expulsion] kind of changed the game and gave them some confidence as well and they started pushing up against us." Hoping to turn the tide Shittu's central defensive partner and captain on the night, Joseph Yobo of Everton, was the most critical after the contest, calling the red card a lack of professionalism. “We showed that we don't have a very complete team," he said. "Some players are very inexperienced, and we showed that today. We had the game under control, but we can't make excuses." The loss stretches Nigeria's FIFA World Cup run to seven matches without a win since France 1998, which includes six defeats. But with coach Lagerback saying he was proud of the team's effort and insisting that they can beat the Koreans and claim an unlikely place in the next round, the Super Eagles were trying their best to focus on Tuesday's match in Durban. "The coach told us after to hold ourselves together and raise our heads," said Uche. "We are in a very difficult situation, it is true, but in football anything can happen. It's still very sad, but we just have to cheer up. We played very well in two games and lost. We just have to keep working hard and try to be physically and mentally ready. It won't be easy." Shittu said he had every faith the team would stand defiant in the face of the Korean challenge. "Every single person in that changing room now is extremely disappointed. But we have a very crucial game in the next couple of days. And it's a game that we believe we can win. We are going to go out there and get our strength back, get our confidence back, and definitely try to win." ![]() |
