Afrobeat artiste,Seun Kuti, the son of Late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has stated that Afrobeat is a social, cultural and political movement and should not be bastardized by younger generation of artistes. Seun was the celebrity guest of the December 1, 2013 edition of Rubbin’ Minds on Channels Television where he discussed the Nigerian music industry and the Fela legacy. With the late music legend having reportedly died of AIDS, discussions inevitably touched on issues of HIV/AIDS, in commemoration of the World Aids Day. Seun seized the opportunity to share his views on the subject. He said “As a man, he (Fela) lived a very fulfilling life and his manner of death is not of relevance really. I just hope the Nigeria of back in the day, when people had a problem with people that were sick with this virus is gone.” Seun, who lost both parents to AIDS, said that the experience has made him wiser and more careful. “For me it’s a matter of education as well, understanding what it is. Having lost my dad and my mum to this virus, it’s something that I understand a lot about, and it helps me make decisions, how to be careful and try to live a healthy social life.” Speaking about music and the rumoured move to brand all Nigerian music Afrobeat, Seun emphasized that there was more to Late Fela Anikulapo Kuti than what Nigeria’s new generation of artistes try to portray, with many of them claiming to have been inspired by him. “Everybody keeps saying they are inspired by Fela, but I say what makes Fela great, the essence of the man was his message. If you’re going to take only his fame, women, his freedom and that he smoked weed and things are easy, you can’t truly say you’re inspired by him when you leave the essence of him aside.” Host, Ebuka, also brought up a recent social media spat involving Seun and Nigerian Hip-hop artiste, Burna Boy, who performed on stage wearing only his underpants, an act which seemed to have been inspired by the general beliefs about Late Fela. Seun said that the issue was blown out of proportion but nevertheless he explained his reservations. “The picture (of Burna-Boy on stage) had a page on a blog where they were discussing it and everybody kept saying it was me. So I just put it up on my Blackberry like ‘it’s not me, I’m bald’. Then I said Burna Boy should know better ‘cause his dad worked with my dad and Fela never performed in pant.” On the task of filling his father’s shoes, Seun said “the goal is not to fill his shoes; the goal is to be a good Afrobeat artiste. That is how Fela would have wanted me to be. Afrobeat is not about being Fela’s son anymore, its bigger than me and my brother, it’s a global movement. There are a hundred bands playing Afrobeat, even in Israel… and among the countries that are musical, Nigeria has the fewest Afrobeat bands.” “Everybody is interpreting the message in a different way and all these people who are not Nigerians took the essence and the message and applied it to their own societies. So it’s a shame when we have a society here where people are not applying this to their own arts.” Seun Kuti, who is known for performing more outside the shores of Nigeria, also criticized the way the Nigerian music industry is being run, describing it as being politicised. He, however, has a new album due for release in March 2014, and it is titled ‘A Long Way To The Beginning’. Seun also spoke very passionately about Nigerian politics, and the new PDP and APC alliance in a manner that would make you think he was a politician, but the young man said he was not planning to get into politics “for now”. http://channelstv.com/home/2013/12/02/fela-was-not-just-about-the-weed-and-women-seun/ |
A Dangote Flour truck carrying illegally bunkered diesel has been intercepted in Bayelsa by men of Operation Doo-Akpor outfit, a special Police security outfit that is funded by the State government. The interception was the outcome of a random search of trucks leaving Yenagoa, undertaken by the Doo-Akpor group. Men of Operation Doo-Akpor intercepted a Dangote truck with registration number YKS 190 KA Jigawa, (ICT-5E-034) along the Ox Bow Lake road of the Bayelsa State capital. The 50ft wide Dangote truck was loaded with what looks like flour from a distance, but upon investigation it was discovered that each bag of the supposed Golden Penny Flour was in fact loaded with over 50 litres of illegally bunkered diesel products. Further investigation revealed that the truck was loaded with over 75 bags of the illegally bunkered diesel products. Efforts to get the men of Operation Doo-Akpor security outfit to speak on Channels Television camera was futile, as they refused to speak on camera. The driver of the truck absconded leaving his conductor and another passenger. http://channelstv.com/home/2013/12/02/dangote-truck-used-for-crude-oil-theft-in-bayelsa/ |
It would cost the Lagos State Government 51billion Naira to effectively tackle the challenge of insecurity in the state. This is the view of the State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, who was at the Lagos State 7th Town Hall Meeting with the theme ‘Sustaining Local Responses to Rising National Security Challenges’. “If we have to patrol every street in Lagos where we have a minimum of about 30,001 roads, we will require at least 45billion Naira to put one patrol vehicle on every street.” He says that if more people contribute to the state’s Security Trust Fund and the Federal Government invests more in that area, security will be effectively tackled. “No matter how little your contribution, I assure that it will always inspire us to continue this journey to rid our communities of criminals.” The State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, added that the contribution to the trust fund has so far yielded good results. He said that between November 2012 and October 2013, 472 armed robbers have been arrested, 390 arms and 16,034 ammunition have been recovered, while 919 vehicles have been recovered. At the end of the meeting, 37 Police officers were presented with awards for their act of leadership and bravery in fighting crime in the state. http://channelstv.com/home/2013/11/29/lagos-needs-over-n51bn-to-tackle-security-challenges-fashola/ |

As prison populations surge in the UK, with overcrowded cells and repeat offenders, the opposite is happening in the Netherlands. The country is actually to close eight prisons because of a lack of criminals, the Dutch justice ministry has announced. Declining crime rates in the Netherlands mean that although the country has the capacity for 14,000 prisoners, there are only 12,000 detainees, reported the nrc.nl. The decrease is expected to continue, the ministry said, with Deputy justice minister Nebahat Albayrak saying that natural redundancy and other measures should counter any forced lay-offs. A report last year on prison overcrowding said that surging populations undermined the rehabilitation of prisoners and risked increasing reoffending in the future. The Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA), which represents more than 60 organisations, called for the government to urgently limit “the unnecessary use of prison, ensuring it is reserved for serious, persistent and violent offenders for whom no alternative sanction is appropriate”. It came after Chief Inspector of Prisons Nick Hardwick said the rising pressure on prisons from budget cuts and increasing numbers cannot go on indefinitely. http://popularresistance.org/netherlands-close-eight-prisons-due-to-lack-of-criminals/ |

My wife and I just got married , I am 45 and she is 26. We moved into a new apartment which needs a lot of plumbing work so I hired this plumber. I swear the guy is handsome and younger than me but that's not my problem. Anytime I return from work I come and meet him half naked sweating with his six packs and my wife will also be in our bedroom sweating with a cloth around her. I think its the ventilation in the rooms, so I want to buy air conditioners and fix in all the rooms. Please, which brand do you suggest I buy? |
