Uefa president Michel Platini will resign from European football’s governing body after failing to have a six-year ban from football overturned. A Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) panel reduced the ban to four years on Monday. Following the judgement, the 60-year-old said he would be stepping down. Platini and former Fifa counterpart Sepp Blatter, were last year found guilty of ethics breaches over a 2m Swiss Franc (£1.3m) “disloyal payment”. The pair, who deny wrong doing had their original bans reduced from eight to six years by the Fifa appeals committee. Platini had taken his case to Cas seeking to get the ban overturned, but a three-man panel said it “was not convinced by the legitimacy of the payment”. The two said the payment in 2011 was made for consultancy work Platini had carried out for Blatter between 1998 and 2002, and that they had a “gentleman’s agreement” on when the balance was settled. The matter is also being looked into by Swiss prosecutors. After Cas returned its judgement, Platini said in a statement: “I am resigning from my duties as Uefa president to pursue my battle in front of the Swiss courts to prove my innocence in this case.” He added that he considered the judgement “a profound injustice”. However, the Cas panel was damning of Platini, saying his “behaviour was not ethical or loyal”. It found his dealings with Blatter had breached the ethics code of world governing body Fifa, and while his six-year ban was “too severe”, it decided a four-year punishment should be handed down – the equivalent to a presidential term in office. It also said an 80,000 Swiss Franc (£57,200) fine should be lowered to 60,000 (£42,900), but stressed: “The Cas panel was of the opinion that a severe sanction could be justified in view of the superior functions carried out by Mr Platini (Fifa vice-president and Uefa president), the absence of any repentance and the impact that this matter has had on Fifa’s reputation.” Uefa said it would meet on 18 May “to discuss next steps”. “In the meantime, there will be no Uefa president appointed ad interim,” it added. @ Mynd44 Fynestboi lalasticlala http://www.oneinfoplus.com.ng/2016/05/09/michel-platini-resigns-ban-appeal-fails/

Niger Delta Avengers, the newest militant group in the oil-rich region, has forced Royal Dutch Shell to evacuate most of its staff from a production facility. The evacuation was carried out by three helicopters on Saturday. The exercise will continue on Sunday in the firm’s facilities across the Niger Delta region. Saturday’s evacuation saw 98 key personnel on board were overseen by helicopters from Eja OML 79, run by Royal Dutch Nigerian subsidiary, Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC), where production of 90k barrels of oil per day has been halted. Sources said that a small group of staff has been left on the platform to carry out skeletal operations. The staff and facility are offered protection by two gunboats belonging to the military Joint Taskforce of the Federal Government. Close to Eja 79 is the Bonga Field, which has a larger production capacity and is operated by another Shell subsidiary, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO). Sources told SaharaReporters that some staff have been evacuated from Bonga while the wider security implication is being reviewed by the company. Since the Niger Delta Avengers began attacking oil facilities in the region, they have hit an oil platform Okan field facility run by Chevron, resulting in the loss of gas supplies to power plants across Nigeria. On Friday SaharaReporters reported, via tweets, that gas plants in Omotosho, Geregu, Ughelli, Olorunsogo and Egbin had to shut down as the main pipeline run by the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) was blown up. While Chevron sources said they could fix their issue in two weeks, the NGC may not be able to restore its gas link for a while. The militants also blew up the oil pipeline that supplies crude to Warri and Kaduna refineries, therefore, crippling Nigeria’s ability to refine some four million gallons of gasoline per day http://www.oneinfoplus.com.ng/2016/05/08/shell-evacuate-staff-major-facility-near-bonga/ @ Fynestboi and lalasticlala

The United Kingdom has restated her commitment to assist Nigeria in her quest to totally eradicate the threat posed by the Boko Haram Terrorists in the North East of Nigeria as well as partnering with relevant agencies to rehabilitate the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who were victims of terrorists attack. This was jointly stated by the Director General for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Defence Intelligence, Ms Sarah Macintosh and Rear Admiral Simon Ancona, the British Assistant Chief of Defence Staff in Defence Engagement when they led a 5 man delegation to the Defence Headquarters Abuja. In her opening remark, Ms Macintosh applauded the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces in decimating the dreaded Boko Haram Terrorists and seek for closer military ties in the area of security for the IDPs and cooperation to provide complementary support to the Nigerian Government relief efforts to ameliorate the humanitarian challenges in the various IDPs camps across the country. Similarly, Rear Admiral Ancona expressed the British desire to assist the regional Multi National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in the military campaign against Boko Haram and contribute to the establishment of a Multi National Joint Task Force coordination centre. He further stated that the British Government had concluded plans to send some specialists to assist in tackling the humanitarian crisis occasioned by the insurgency in the North East of Nigeria. The British delegation also acknowledged the tremendous efforts of the military in not only winning the war against insurgents but also “winning the peace” in the country. In his response, the Chief of Defence Staff, (CDS) General Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin thanked the UK delegation for the visit and solicited for a more fruitful cooperation with the British government. He also briefed the delegation on the ongoing efforts by the military to de-radicalise the youths in the North East who were hitherto susceptible to the radical Islamic group, Boko Haram. The CDS, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal BC Saidu, also explained the transitional arrangements to resettle the IDPs and noted that the greatest military challenge hampering the fight against the Boko Haram Terrorist is that of inadequate equipments and lack of cooperation from some arms vendors. Others in the entourage of the British Director General for Foreign and Commonwealth Defence were the British Defence Attache to Nigeria and two senior diplomats from the UK embassy, while some principal Staff Officers from the Defence Headquarters were at hand to receive them. Highlights of the visitation included a group photograph and exchange of souvenirs. http://www.oneinfoplus.com.ng/2016/05/08/uk-pledges-support-nigerian-armed-forces/ @ Fynestboi lalasticlala

Senate President Bukola Saraki was slammed by the Federal Government with an additional three-counts of charge against him today. This brings the total number of charges against him to 16. Just as he did to the older charges, Saraki has pleaded not guilty to the new charges in the amended suit. Counsel to Mr. Saraki, Paul Usoro, asked the court give his client a period of three weeks to adequately make arrangements for defense. Objecting to the request, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, said it is against the provisions of Section 218 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA)) 2015 to allow such a duration for the proposed adjournment. He argued that Mr. Usoro has not shown any prejudice that will be of effect to his client if the cross-examination continues. He also stressed that the defense did not tell the court whether or not he had finished the cross-examination of the witness on the part of the charge that has not been amended. After the arguments by the both parties, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar, adjourned to May 10th for the continuation of the trial. http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/04/saraki-slammed-again-with-new-charges.html?m=1

The University of Ibadan has been shut down indefinitely following a two-day protest by students who have now been asked to leave the campus. The students were expressing displeasure over "the suspension of a union leader by the students’ disciplinary committee" and "non-availability of some amenities needed on the campus" In what is becoming a norm in Federal Universities, the students complained about lack of power and water which they said made learning difficult for them. They took their protests to Lectures halls & disrupted ongoing classes by using canes to chase colleagues who didn't join the protests. They also shut down all entrances to the institution, a move which has been declared illegal by other institutions including UNILAG. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abel Olayinka said the decision to shut the institution was occasioned by violent protests which, he added, had led to "life-threatening acts and text messages" being sent and received around the campus. http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/04/university-of-ibadan-shut-down-over.html?m=1

The Ogun State Government says it plans to generate electricity from sawdust as part of its contribution towards the country increasing power supply The Commissioner for Forestry, Chief Kolawole Lawal, stated this during a visit to sawmills in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu-East Local Government Area of the state. He stated : “The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Electricity Commission of Nigeria and the state government are on a project now that will convert sawdust to energy,” The commissioner stated that the state government was currently carrying out a feasibility study on the project. Lawal also called on the saw millers not to waste sawdust, adding that even though it was seen as a waste product, it would soon become a raw material for energy generation. The commissioner noted that creating new ranges in areas such as Ijebu Igbo, Ago Iwoye and Molafara became imperative in order to forestall illegal felling of trees and to ensure proper policing of the forest reserves so as to stop the illegal exploitation of the state’s forest resources. He said, “It became imperative to create or establish some new forest ranges as majority of our trees are being illegally exploited and taken to neighbouring states.” http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/04/ogun-state-goverment-to-generate.html?m=1
