The Nigerian military has confirmed the arrest of the leader of the Ansaru Islamic sect, Khalid Albarnawi, who was once described as the second-in-command to Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram terror group. The US had placed a $5 million bounty on his head after branding him one of three Nigerian “specially designated global terrorists” in 2012. Ansaru is a splinter group of Boko Haram known for kidnapping foreigners. Ideologically aligned to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, it is also accused of killing a number of Westerners. Ansaru once claimed that it carried out an attack on a maximum security prison in Abuja in 2012, freeing dozens of inmates. The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, in response to THISDAY enquiries last night, confirmed the arrest of the Ansaru leader by security forces. Abubakar however stated that further investigations were ongoing and that the details would formally be communicated to members of the public in due course. “We have confirmed that Khalid Albarnawi is the one who was arrested. We are sorting it out and looking for full details. The moment we finish our investigation, we will inform the members of the public,” he said. A report by an online portal, The Cable, had at the weekend quoted Ahmad Salkida, a journalist known for his access to some of the leaders of Boko Haram, as having said that Albarnawi was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lokoja, Kogi State and moved to Abuja last Friday. The Ansaru leader, Albarnawi, who was reportedly trained in Algeria, is believed to be highly influential in the nation’s terror network and is believed to have ties to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. He is regarded as the most influential member of Nigeria’s terror network with contacts to other Jihadi groups in North Africa and the Middle East. Salkida said Albarnawi is believed to have reconciled with the leader of Boko Haram. Still speaking on the arrest, the Defence spokesman termed it a “great achievement”, adding that recent clearance operations by the military in northern Nigeria were yielding positive results. Abubakar further disclosed that in addition to the arrest of Albarnawi, more terrorist leaders were surrendering to the Nigerian military and other security agencies. He informed THISDAY that more arrests would be made and that the clearance operations would be pursued to a successful conclusion until all terrorists are routed from every inch of the country’s territory. “This is a great achievement in line with the efforts of the military and other security agencies to clear the Boko Haram remnants, and we will continue to sustain that. “You know that in recent times we have been arresting the commanders and some have been surrendering on their own because they cannot face the firepower of the military. “So we believe that more would be arrested and we advise those who are still hiding to surrender themselves. The operations have been quite successful and on course,” he said. Source: http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/04/nigerian-military-arrest-us-wanted.html?m=1

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, identified himself as a target of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for what he linked to his unrelenting criticism of the President’s policies. He said this on Sunday during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, he added that the realisation made him to be cautious of his dealings in office. He also noted that he had started the construction of a flyover in Ado/Ikere Road for N5.7bn and invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to be part of the project from the outset. Fayose said, “I have started the construction of a flyover in Ado/Ikere Road for N5.7bn. I have also invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to be part of it, because I know I am a target of the current administration. “You may not like my face or my style. But take the message and leave the messenger. If they have anything against me, they would have published it I know. I prepare for my defence. I am fully prepared. “Criticising the President should not make an enemy. We will sue the government. We learnt this from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. He is always in court either by proxy or direct. You cannot keep arresting my principal officers and members of my state House of Assembly.” The governor also urged the President Buhari to devalue the naira without further delay, adding that he blamed him for the current economic woes in the country. “The All Progressives Congress deceived us. They manipulated us. I blame the current economic woes in Nigeria on the President. No matter the past economic situation of a country, a good manager would have been able to normalise the situation. The way things are going in Nigeria, the economy may shut down soon,” he stated. http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/04/fayose-identifies-himself-as-target-of.html?m=1 |

ASUU IMSU CHAPTER TO CALL OFFSTRIKE BY NEXT WEEK NEGOTIATIONS ARE CURRENTLY ON GOING TO MODERATE THE JUST RELEASED NEW TUITION FEES FOR NON INDEGENES, OWELLE RESISTS PRESSURE; INSIST ON FREE EDUCATION TO INDIGENES. Sequel to Students passionate appeal to the Executive governor of Imo State, Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha over the just released exorbitant tuition fee for non indigenes and the lingering Indefinite ASUU, NASU and SSANU strike, the Governor has been holding several meetings with leadership of the aforementioned Unions to call off the strike as soon as possible and as well reduce the new tuition fee stipulated for non indigenes. First class information reaching me earlier this morning revealed that the State Governor bluntly refused to succumb to pressures emanating from different groups which were calling on him to withdraw his free education program for non indigenes as he mandated the three Unions and management to draw a blue print on how best to solve the current problem and still run the free education for indigenes. Since then, the various Unions and management have been holding several meetings constantly because they have to meet back with the governor on Monday 4/4/2016. . The Governor has therefore urged the Leadership of the aforementioned Unions to call off the strike and resume work with immediate effect promising to address all their issues. We therefore urge all 100 level students to prepare for their first semester examination coming up anytime soon. http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/04/ASUU-imsu-chapter-to-call-offstrike-by.html?m=1

“Since victims of grand corruption including armed robbery and kidnap suspects are not usually admitted to bail, those who are charged with looting the treasury should no longer be granted bail,” says popular human right lawyer, Femi Falana. Falana, who spoke at two different events on Thursday, stated this while giving a keynote address at a roundtable discussion on anti-corruption war by the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, University of Lagos. The roundtable was chaired by Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption and had Oby Ezekwesili, Femi Aribisala and Ayo Obe as discussants. Speaking on the imbalance in the justice system at a public lecture organised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Falana said: “The criminal justice system has been hijacked by the corrupt and looters of the public treasury and their lawyers. It is only in Nigeria that an accused will ask his trial to be suspended.” “Many of the governors who faced corruption charges, their lawyers had asked for their trial to be suspended, and judges granted this. How would a lawyer also plead with a judge that a criminal should not be arrested? “Someone who stole millions of naira getting perpetual injunction not to be arrested and prosecuted, lawyers must allow cases to go on.” Falana, however, stated that some of the ongoing trials of corrupt ex-officials might not end before the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. “In Edo State, someone was sentenced to three years imprisonment for stealing bush meat, another one who stole handset in Osun State was also sentenced to seven years imprisonment.” “But corrupt public officials prefer to be remanded in Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s custody or being remanded in Kuje Prisons.” “Let me tell you, EFCC cells have beddings and mosquito nets, and I have been detained in Kuje Prisons twice, it is one of the best prisons in the country. Why didn’t they take them to Kirikiri or Ikoyi or Ijebu Ode Prisons? “And whoever have been detained in police cells would know that they sleep on **** floor, and a bucket put at a corner to serve as container for their faeces.” He berated the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for criticising Buhari’s disregard for human right violation while remaining silent on the actions of it’s members. “The Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria has urged the government to fight corruption under the rule of law. On its own part the NBA has censored the Federal Government for violating the human rights of certain suspects. But neither the BOSAN nor the NBA has deemed it fit to caution the members of the legal profession who are determined to frustrate the prosecution of corruption cases.” “As far as both bodies are concerned, human rights are the exclusive reserve of the bourgeois. Hence, the tenets of the rule of law are only invoked when the trial of VIPs is involved, while human rights are violated in Nigeria when the looters of the treasury are arrested and detained for a few days without trial.” Source: http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/04/send-corrupt-officials-to-kirikiri.html?m=1 |

The president of the group, Emeka Ugwu-Oju, who headed the group to a meeting with Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, later told State House correspondents that the nation’s economy was in a terrible state. He said his delegation advised President Buhari to declare the state of emergency after due consultation with the National Assembly. He said, “On the current stage of the economy, we strongly suggested and advised that Mr. President, as a matter of urgency in consultation with the National Assembly, declare a three-year state of emergency on the economy. “And this is not about APC and PDP. It’s something that is non-partisan; our economy is bad, people should realise that because we’re making it seem like it’s something that’ll go away. “We were having $100 a barrel and now, we might not have $50 a barrel in the next three years and we’ve to factor it in. “This issue of fuel scarcity is a typical example of what has happened. We didn’t plan for it before, we now have to get every citizen not a question of Mr. Bad or Mr. Good, the total leadership has to realise that all Nigerians have to come together, we’ve to roll up our sleeves so that everyone has a role to play. “We’ve to sacrifice, it’s not just the poor that should be sacrificing alone. For example, I see no reason why any minister, governor or whoever should be travelling outside economy class. “We’ve to show that things are bad. You can’t tell me things are bad and I see you drinking champagne, flying first class or private jet. Same goes for the private sector. “These were the things we tried to make the vice president know and then communicate. We had a good engagement and as you know, he is very intelligent, very hardworking, very cerebral and we’re happy he is the vice president of the country.” oju also said that they where planning a second south south/south east forum but they might be seen as a geo-political group “We try to interface with South-west professionals and others from other geo-political zones on how we can get the Nigerian economy out of the woods. “We believe each zone has some to bring to the table. We don’t have to wait for the federal government to do things for us. We, the professionals, want to see what we can bring to the table. “We, from the South-south, South-east, are bringing the energy corridor project to the table and we can say we’ve the most comparative advantage on that.” Source: http://www.oneinfoplus.com/2016/03/group-urges-buhari-to-declare-3-year.html?m=1 |
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service says it will commence the prosecution of tax evaders and offenders in the state from April 1, 2016. The LIRS in a statement by its Executive Chairman, Mr. Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, on Wednesday said the move became necessary because a large number of Lagosians had not paid their taxes although the law stated that eligible tax payers must pay within 90 days of the New Year. The statement read in part, “Under the Personal Income Tax Act, a taxable person is statutorily required to file a return of income for the preceding year within 90 days from the commencement of every year of assessment (March 31st being the deadline), while every employer of labour is required to file all emoluments paid to its employees for the preceding year, not later than 31st of January each year. “Therefore, any taxable person or corporate organisation, who fails to file their tax returns with LIRS by the stipulated date, is in breach of the provisions of the law, which is a criminal offence that is punishable under the tax laws.” Ogunsanwo said the service had put all the necessary machineries in place to ensure the enforcement of the tax laws with effect from April 1, 2016, adding that there would be no hiding place for offenders. He said LIRS had made effort through advocacy and enlightenment programmes to encourage residents of the state to pay their taxes, adding that some taxpayers complied willingly. “But it is disheartening to note that a large fraction of eligible taxpayers are still not complying, thereby failing to contribute to the common purse for the good of all. “In the wake of little or no proceeds from the federation account, the focus of the present administration in renewing infrastructure and general development of the state cannot be achieved by the attitude of those who deliberately refuse to discharge their civic responsibility to the state. “We are now going to the next phase, which is enforcement and prosecution, and we will take full advantage of the provisions of the tax laws to apprehend and prosecute tax defaulters,” Ogunsanwo said. He urged all taxable residents in Lagos State to quickly pay their taxes, adding that the government would, through the Rapid Tax Prosecution Unit, commence prosecution of tax defaulters in Lagos State without further notice.
