The soil for carrot cultivation should be properly prepared and apt to get the desired yield. Therefore the field must provide a loose, friable, deep, and well-drained technique for seeds to germinate effectively. This can be achieved by repeated deep plowing at least 20-30 cm deep followed by harrowing, leveling, and cleaning. Since the seeds are very small and delicate, the seedbed should be very finely prepared. Beds of convenient size should be prepared before sowing. Carrots are taproots that penetrate and grow downwards so while cultivating the carrots, you should avoid rocky or stony areas to prevent stunted growth. It is advisable to make ridges for planting carrots, which should be higher than those for planting a crop like maize. Ridges are necessary at a considerable height level for the maximum penetration of the carrot.

Carrots are known for their tremendous benefits and uses, some benefits of carrots are;
- The roots of carrot are used as a vegetable for soups & curries; graded roots are used as salad and also for garnishing meals.

Weather
Carrot is a cold-weather crop, and it also does well in warm climates. The optimum temperature for getting efficient growth is between 16 to 20 °C, while temperatures above 28°C drastically reduce top growth. Carrots are propagated using seeds. The germination of some local varieties may be inadequate. The best results must procure clean, healthy, and viable seeds from reliable sources to aid productivity. The seeds take approximately 7-21 days for complete germination.
Planting
Seeds are lightly covered with soil. Some growers irrigate the field about 24 hours before sowing to be sure that adequate moisture is present at the time of sowing. The Fertilizer recommendations should be based on soil analysis.
Irrigation
The first irrigation should be light and carried out immediately after sowing. Subsequent irrigations are given as needed. Too much moisture causes short carrots with light colour and a larger diameter.
Harvest
Early carrots are harvested when they are partially developed in the case of distinct markets; otherwise, they are retained in the soil till they reach the full maturity stage. It is advised that they should not be retained in the full maturity stage because they will eventually become hard and which is unfit for consumption.
Carrots are harvested when the roots are about 1.8 cm or larger in diameter at the upper end. The soil may be loosened with a special plow or an ordinary plow.
After harvesting, the carrots are carefully placed in a packing house in crates or bags before washing. After that, carefully wash Carrots and sort them by size before packaging them for future endeavors.

Soya bean is a grain legume which is very nutritious and contains on average 40% protein. It can either be used directly for food or processed into soy-milk, cooking oil, infant weaning food and other range of products. It can also be used for feed production due to its high protein content. Soybeans form root nodules which contains bacteria called RHIZOBIA. It is a nitrogen fixing bacteria which forms nitrogen from the air into a form that can be used by soybeans for growth.
Some of the nitrogen are also left behind through falling of leaves and roots which makes the soil more fertile and which is one of the main reasons it is being intercropped with major crops like maize, cassava, beans etc.
VARIETIES OF SOYA BEANS IN NIGERIA.

TGX1835 – 10E : It is an early maturing variety. It has good grain colour, low shattering and has 15-20% oil in grain. It is resistant to pest, rust and pustules.
TGX1448 – 2E : This has a medium maturity period, it’s not too late and it’s not early. It has excellent grain colour, low shattering and contains 15-20% oil in grain. It is resistant to common pests and diseases.
TGX1485 – 1D & TGX1904 – 6F : It is an early maturing variety. It has good grain colour, low shattering and contains 15-20% oil in grain. It is resistant to common pests and pustules but susceptible to rust.
TGX1951 – 3F : It is also an early maturing variety, it has low shattering and contains 15-20% oil in grain. It is tolerant to rust, cercospora leaf spot and bacteria pustules. It is also tolerant to poor soil.

S[b]TEP-BY-STEP GUIDE ON SOYA BEANS FARMING IN NIGERIA.[/b]

The following are the guides to follow when one want to go into soybean farming in Nigeria.

Land selection and preparation : Soybeans can be grown on any kind of soils however, they do better on soils with pH between 4.5 and 8.5. It is advisable to avoid waterlogged, Sandy or gravelly soil for soybean farming. Clear all vegetation with a hoe or with animal power or tractor. Well prepared land ensures good germination and avoids weed infestation. You can plant soybean on ridges of flat surfaces.
Variety and seed selection : When going into soybean farming, select a variety that suits your Agro ecological zone. Pay attention to the maturity period of the variety. Varieties with short maturity period are suitable for areas with low rainfall while late maturing varieties are less suitable for drier environment.
Inoculation : To be able to form nodules and fix nitrogen, Soybeans need to be inoculated with rhizobia. Each legume crop needs different type of rhizobium bacteria, so ensure you have the right inoculant for soybean.

How to inoculate with soya bean legume fix

Measure 15kg of soybean and put in any container
When seed is a bit dusty, a small amount of water (30ml) can be added to it.
Add 75g of inoculant to the seed
Mix the seeds and inoculant very well until evenly distributed.
Protect the inoculated seed from direct sunlight by covering with paper, cloth etc and put under shade before planting.
Plant the seeds on the same day you inoculate them.
Place the inoculated seed in a well prepared, moist furrow and cover immediately.

Applying fertilizer : To apply fertilizers, male furrows along the rows of soybean. The furrows should be 8cm away from the soybean plant and 5cm deep. Place the fertilizer in the furrow and cover with soil. This can be done at planting of immediately after planting. Soybean needs about 30kg P/ha (30kg P2O5/ha) and about 25kg K/ha (25kg K2O/ha). You can reduce fertilizer rates when manure has been added recently.
Planting : Plant seed in the morning or evening to avoid direct sunlight on the inoculated seed. Planting in rows is more advisable, you use the correct plant density, weeding is easier and harvesting takes less time. Plant 2-5cm deep, planting deeper than 5cm may result in vigour or failure of plant to emerge. Fill gaps 1 – 2weeks after sowing when plants have emerged.


Harvesting : Soybean should be harvested 3 – 4 months after planting, depending on the time of sowing and seed variety. Early maturing seeds can be harvested 70days after planting and late maturing seeds can be 180days after planting. Avoid harvesting soybean by pulling as this may remove the roots that contain nitrogen and contribute to soil fertility. You can cut the matured plant at ground level using hoe, cutlass or sickle.

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF SOYA BEAN FARMING IN NIGERIA.

The following are some of the economic importance of soybean farming in Nigeria.

As human population increases, so does the need for protein. Soybean is largely consumed both internationally and locally. So, producing more of soybean will make it readily available for consumers and alsoeet it’s demand for the ever growing population.
Soybean is an excellent source of high quality protein, with low saturated fat, no cholesterol and great amount of dietary fibre. Making it a healthy choice of food.

In the light of this, to mark the celebration; agribusiness stakeholders and entrepreneurs are invited to send articles for publication in its 2nd E-magazine publication with the theme "ZERO HUNGER: Enhancing Agricultural Productivity".
Now than ever before, the strategy of sharing knowledge, optimizing resources, building and developing capacity and idea to achieve zero hunger has been necessitated by the stark effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and it's ripple effects to human activities like agriculture and Agripreneur efforts to ensure reduced hunger and inadequate nutrition. Hence this edition of agricincome magazine would focus on how to improve, sustain and effectively employ agripreneur efforts to achieving zero hunger during and post Covid-19.
The magazine will provide opportunity to share important ideas and experiences, showcase initiatives, examine vital issues and profer solutions that are feasible and sustainable. Creating a dynamic niche in agribusiness to achieve zero hunger that foster good nutrition and productivity in the lives of people is integral to progress in this era; evidently through social efficiency, new opportunities that add significant value, and tremendous economic and human growth.
The theme is accommodating and broad enough to cover a range of innovations, technology, product development and ideas of the general and divers agribusiness Stakeholders. Hence, you are invited to submit a publication (in English) on your aspects of agribusiness as a niche to achieve zero hunger.
All submitted papers must be previously unpublished and should not be considered for review or publication somewhere else during the period at which such papers are undergoing review. Papers will be peer reviewed by panel of Agricincome Hub reviewers. The authors are requested to submit full paper of their original and unpublished work not later than September 25th 2020.

Mushroom farming in Nigeria is one of the most unexplored farming ideas in this era, the search for an alternative for seasonal vegetables as brought mushroom farming to the limelight.
Mushroom is a type of fungi that grows on decaying material or soil that are moist. Mushrooms do not require sunlight for their growth, this is one of the reasons mushrooms are typically grown in shades where they only have access to oxygen which is needed for survival.
Health benefits of mushroom

• Edible mushroom as lots of health benefits apart from been a source of good protein and been delicious mushroom is said to be used in weight loss programs.
• Mushroom helps in combating non-cancerous tumor
• Mushroom is a good source of protein most especially for the diabetic patient because they require low salt intake.
• Mushroom contains about 85-90% water, this makes them good for a healthy digestive system.
• Mushroom serves as antibiotics which can be used to prevent or treat illness like high blood pressure, hypertension, wounds, and tumor.
Types of mushroom in Nigeria

Mushroom is of various types, but there are four common ones namely chanterelles, shiitake, morels, and oysters.
a) Chanterelles– it is very rich in vitamins C, D, it also contains a high amount of potassium.
b) Shiitake– this is mostly found in Asian countries, it is widely known to reduce tumors
c) Morel– morels mushroom contains a high amount of vitamin c and antioxidant. It also helps to protect the liver from toxic materials.
d) Oysters– oyster mushroom helps to reduce the cholesterol level in the body, the oyster mushroom is said to have antibacterial and anti-oxidant properties and lots of amino acids.
How to build a mushroom growing house

To start Mushroom farming in Nigeria, there are few things to put in consideration. This include:
• Choosing a variety and medium
Choose a variety to cultivate, this can be based on your environment or target market. The medium to grow your mushroom can be sawdust, coco peat, log of wood etc.
• Prepare the substrate
This is the material which provides nourishment for a plant to grow. For the purpose of this blogpost, sawdust will be chosen as our substrate. Firstly, partially decompose the sawdust to make it less acidic, this is done for a few days and watered. Heat the substrate for a few minutes to sterilise it to kill all micro-organisms that could be competing with the mushroom for nutrient, allow to cool and bag them in polythene bags.
• Spawning
Next thing to do is to inoculate the substrate that has been sterilised with mushroom seeds also known as mycelium. This process can also be called “spawning”.
After the inoculation, the spawned bags are taken into the incubation room, which is usually dark, after 4-5weeks they are transferred into the growth room where the mushroom have access to light which helps to stimulate their growth. Ensure the polythene bags are stacked together to allow them sprayed with water to keep them moist.
Any selected medium must be free from micro-organism.
• Harvesting
Mushroom takes about 4-5weeks after incubation, after which it can be harvested every 24-36 hours. Once the mushroom is detached from the substrate or growing medium is ready to eat or it can be dried packaged for sale.

Mushroom are sold in kilogram or grams with varying prices depending on location, but on the average a kilogram of mushroom is between #2000- #3000 in Nigeria.

Precision Agriculture

Precision Agriculture is a systematic technique of applying the right amount of input (fertilizer, pesticide, water, crop, etc.) at the right location, at the right time in a way that optimizes farm returns and minimizes chemicals and protects the environment.
Yield Monitors

Planting is not enough, so getting maximum harvest should be considered at the planning stage of farm activities because the resultant effect of pre-planting activities, growth, and development cycles would be evident during harvest. To monitor these stages, some precision technologies should be incorporated.
These technologies include crop yield measuring devices installed on harvesting equipment which have the capability of indicating yield (kg/ha), weight, ha/hour, hectare worked, grain moisture content. The system work by providing information on crop yield at regular intervals by time or distance. The yield data from the monitor is recorded and stored at regular intervals along with corresponding location data as received from the GPS unit, then the GIS software is used to produce yield maps through the measured
yield data.
Global Positioning System (GPS)

This is a network of satellites that transmit precise satellite time and location information to ground receivers. It is used to get the location of yield data collected within one to three meters on the field. The ground receiving units can receive this location information from several satellites at a time for use in calculating a triangulation fix thus determining the exact location of the receiver. This is used to produce yield maps for each field.
Geographical Information System (GIS)
This is an integrated open-source computer software system that is used to collate, store, analyse and display spatially received geographical information from Global Positioning System (GPS) and yield monitors in a map-like form.
Variable Rate Technology
This system works with precise geographical information received about the field condition and the need for crop, nutrient, and water of each grid location. The nutrient, environmental condition, or water need is formulated and programmed in a precise and controllable way into farm field and equipment. Such equipment is sprayer used for drip irrigation and soluble fertilizer application, planter with the ability to precisely control the rate of application of crop inputs and tillage operations. VRT is also used to control drainage and for environmental conditioning such as canopy temperature and humidity.

Remote Sensors
This is an inbuilt system in farm equipment that detects temperature, light, pH, oxygen, moisture, etc from the soil, crops, and environment. They are used before planting to the storage stage to detect certain problems and by that solution can be made and maintained throughout the processes.
For example, remote sensing can help in detecting small problem areas caused by pathogens and diseases which can inform optimized time and quantity for fungicide applications. Other sensored equipments are soil moisture sensor, digital light sensor, portable soil sampler, etc. The on-site data generated is processed and then added to the GIS database.
Computer Hardware and Software
Through the knowledge of data analytics, a computer is required to analyse the data collected by yield monitors and GPS as this will be transformed into readable formats such as maps, graphs, charts, or words for decision making.
There are emerging technologies in precision agriculture in Nigeria and all over the world is the application of Agricultural Robots (Agbots), Drones and IoT but most of the technologies discussed in this post are integrated into designed computer hard wares, software, and farm equipment which works best in their combinations to each farmer need and scalability. Similarly, they are very affordable and obtainable in Nigeria.
