Snail processing is a very important activity in snail farming and value addition. The main aim of snail processing is to ensure optimum value is gotten from the snails using hygienic processes and techniques.
The type of snail processing techniques adopted has a large effect on the snail meat shelf life, taste and cleanliness.
Snail meat has a sticky substance known as slime, the snail slime must be wash thoroughly to avoid it affecting the snail meat taste and palatability. Discussed below are some of the snail processing techniques.
Equipment’s needed for snail processing
Big stone or cub
Small iron rod
Lemon, lime or alum
A bowl of water
An empty bowl
A pair of glove
Knife
Snail processing
There are three major ways of processing snails
a) Breaking of the snail shells
Snails selected for processing may be starved overnight.
The snail shell is hit with a hard object like stone or cub
Remove the snail meat from intestines and other offal’s
Remove carefully tiny pieces of shells at the point where the snail meat is attached to the shell.
Note: Be very careful when removing the tiny particles because they can be very sharp.
Wash off the snail slime using either or combination of alum, lime or lemon.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water
b) Cracking the snail shell
Crack the tip of the snail shell with a stone or cub
Use a rod to push out the snail meat and offal
Detach the meat from the offal’s
Watch out carefully for tiny particles of shell
Wash thoroughly in water containing either or combination of alum, lime or lemon
Rinse with clean water
c) Boiling of snails in water and salt solution
This method requires patience and expertise. Snails are placed in a large pot filled with water, a little salt is added. The snails are then boiled together with their shells for about 15-20 minutes until the snails start crawling out of their shells. The water is then drained and the snail meat is detached from the offals.
Snail preparation
The snail meat has to be thoroughly washed to remove snail slime.
Ways to wash off snail slime
Lime or lemon
Lime and lemon have acidic properties which help to remove slime from snails. Cut the lime or lemon into two and rub all over the snail
Alum
Soak a portion of alum in water prior to the time of snail processing for the alum to dissolve in water. Use the remaining part of the alum to rub all over the snail. Avoid using too much of alum in washing as it may affect the snail meat taste.
Combination of lemon and alum gives a very squeaky clean result.
Snail processing and packaging
Processed snails can either be eaten boiled, fried or oven dried. Snail meat can also be prepared with varieties of soups like Egusi, Bitter leaf soup, Ora soup, etc.
To avoid spoilage processed snails should be consumed or refrigerated within few hours after processing.
Snail meat meant for Export or long term storage can be preserved by oven drying to remove the moisture content of the snail meat, after which it can be packaged, sealed and stored.

The biggest threat to Zero hunger and Food security in Nigeria is inadequate fertile land and inadequate viable seed free from pest and diseases. Aeroponics farming in Nigeria is one the modern farming techniques that have been able to solve this problem to certain extent.

This interview on Aeroponics farming will open our minds to few hidden things about Aeroponics farming in Nigeria. I have the honour to present to you Mr Onasanya Abiola Lawrence the Research Supervisor in Charge of Aeroponics System at IITA Ibadan. Agricincome: Can you introduce yourself and your farming background to our readers?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: My name is Onasanya Abiola Lawrence, I am delighted to be interviewed on Aeroponics System(soilless). I had my first degree from the University Of Ilorin, I first developed an interest in farming about 15years ago when I cultivated a plot of land with cucumber. I have been quite steadfast in cultivating crops like cucumber, Maize, Cassava and potatoes in the past few years until recently when I joined the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture.

Agricincome: what is your association with YIIFSWA?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: I had my NYSC program done in the YIIFSWA project at IITA, Ibadan, where I had the opportunity to be in the Aeroponics system where we plant Yam for seed multiplication. However, after my NYSC, Dr. Norbert Maroya, the Project Leader, YIIFSWA project, interviewed me and made preparations for my appointment as a Research Supervisor in charge of a section of the Aeroponics.

Agricincome: [/b]How would you explain Aeroponics to an average Nigerian?
[b]Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: Aeroponics is the system or medium of growing crops in a soilless environment and literally in the Air. The roots are suspended in an enclosed box hereby the stem and other vegetative parts grow on top of the boxes, unlike the hydroponics system where the roots are totally immersed in Water all through their lifetime.

Agricincome: What are the prospects of the Aeroponics system?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: I look forward to a world where many of our leaders and wealthy organizations embrace and also adopts the Aeroponics system so as to solve the problem of unclean seeds, scarcity of seeds and unavailability of crops all through the year.
YIIFSWA already has some private seed companies who are fully into the Aeroponics system so as to end the problems facing our farmers in getting seeds for the next planting season.
Agricincome: Given all these prospects, why aren’t more people practicing Aeroponics Farming?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: It is basically because it requires quite a huge capital but it eventually pays off and has quite a lot of profit when fully established.



Agricincome: What types of crops can be planted in the Aeroponics system?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence:
1. Yam
2. Irish potato
3. Tomatoes
4. Carrots and so on.

Agricincome: What are the challenges of the Aeroponics system?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence:
1. Capital Intensive

Agricincome: What is the minimum start-up capital to set up an Aeroponics system?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: Actually, we cannot specifically fix an amount but a sum of four million naira would really go along way in establishing the Aeroponics System.

Agricincome: How can YIIFSWA help startups?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: YIIFSWA has 4 private seeds companies in Nigeria who we have really assisted financially, technically and practically. YIIFSWA has partners all over the West Africa countries and also engage in meeting farmers in different parts of this country and even in Ghana to give them seeds and also other supports to eradicate food insecurity and increase Income through Improvement of Yam.

Agricincome: Any advice for youths seeking careers in agriculture?
Onasanya Abiola Lawrence: Youths can start a small scale farming and with time, they will get to their destination. The youths should, however, do lots of research to know the opportunities’ embedded in Agriculture and even the location of their respective businesses.
Youths can engage in Aeroponics system if they have access to loan from banks or governments’ intervention.

If you give cutlass to a graduate to cultivate land, he would feel reluctant to do so, but if you give a remote that controls and performs the works on the farm to such person, he would collect it because it is high and novel technology. Government intervention would really go along way in promoting Aeroponics system farming in this country.

Aeroponics farming in Nigeria is one of the biggest innovation of modern farming techniques changing the face of agriculture, solving the problems of lack of land and adequate fertile land to carry out agricultural activities. The degradation of land in Nigeria is part of the factors that brought Aeroponics farming in Nigeria to the limelight.
Aeroponics– Aero (Latin word) means air. It simply means the medium of growing crops in the Air, without the use of soil or an aggregate medium.

Aeroponics farming offers an efficient means to grow plants, including fruits and vegetables, without plotting and replotting the land to replenish access to nutrient-rich soil.
Mr. Samson Ogbole of PS NUTRAC and Mr. Onasanya Abiola Lawrence of YIIFSWA, IITA (Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa) have worked extensively on crops using hydroponics and Aeroponics. How does Aeroponics work?

The concept of Aeroponics farming is quite simple. Plants are suspended in the air in enclosed frames that leave the leafy tips and the roots able to grow up and down respectively. Many Aeroponic farming systems look very similar to traditional potted plant systems, with the key difference being that the containers for the plants are sealed around the plants’ bases and have a closed environment for the root systems.
Instead of relying on a mixture of soil and water to feed the plants, Aeroponic horticulturists spray the root systems with a nutrient mix(the nutrients the plant needs to grow are all embedded in the nutrient Solution and being misted on the roots of the plants i.e being given to the plants, without them searching for the nutrients unlike the soil where plants roots searches for nutrient and may not get all the nutrients needed unless some fertilizers are added). Because the roots are enclosed, the nutrient-water mix is used more efficiently by the plants and less water is needed for them to grow and thrive.
Depending on the Aeroponic system, nutrients may be sprayed manually at intervals throughout the day and night, but most Aeroponic systems have one or more pumps (a pump works at a time while the other is on standby) that automatically keep plants nourished without constant supervision. As long as the system is sealed and nutrient mist is consistently pumped to the roots, plants should thrive in an Aeroponic environment.

Benefits of Aeroponics

1. Clean/pure seeds are gotten from the Aeroponics system
2. The cost to set up an Aeroponics farming system is a one-time cost.
3. There is no weeding involved.
4. There is reduced fungicide, insecticide, while there is no use of herbicide at all.
5. It is an automated system.
6. It is not by any means weather dependent.
7. It actually brings about healthier produce and any type of crop can be planted.
8. There is faster growth due to good aeration.
9. It allows you to plant anywhere, even indoors.
10. There is no dirt associated with it.
11. The system is economically viable.
12. The system allows you to plant vertically as you can also plant upwards in space – thus, space maximization.
13. There is 98% reduced use of water and fertilizer since they are recycled.
14. Aeroponics gives room for all year round planting
15. It does not give room for pest and diseases because it is in a controlled environment(Screen house)
How to set up an Aeroponics system
Below are the things you need to set up an Aeroponics farming system.
• Container to hold the nutrient solution (a reservoir).
• Submersible fountain/pond pump.
• Tubing to distribute water from the reservoir pump to the mister heads in the growing chamber.
• Enclosed growing chamber for the root zone.
• Mister/sprinkler heads.
• Watertight container for the growing chamber where the plant’s root systems will be.
• Tubing to return the excess nutrient solution back to the reservoir.
• Timer (preferably a cycle timer) to turn on and off the pump.
Best plants for Aeroponics

Almost all crops can be grown with the Aeroponics farming system. But leafy vegetables and some tuber crops do very well in the Aeroponics. Below are some of the crops suited for Aeroponics farming in Nigeria:
• Tomato
• Lettuce
• Cabbage
• Carrots
• Cucumber
• Eggplant
• Yam
• Potatoes
• Peppers
• Ginger

Conclusion
Aeroponics farming in Nigeria will ensure maximum food security in years to come, it will also help in diversifying the economy and increase revenue through exportation of agricultural produce. In Nigeria, tomato is produced in every state but there are states that engage in the commercial production of tomatoes. They are Gombe, Kaduna, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Benue, Jigawa, and Plateau.
How To Start Up Your Tomato Farming

There are basic things one needs to do to start up tomato farm. They are;
Land preparation: this is very important in every crop production processes because the soil is where crops get almost all they need for growth and development. Tomatoes thrive well in loamy garden soil with acidic PH. The soil needs to be enriched with poultry waste or compost manure and watered for several days prior to the planting date and weeds should be cleared to avoid any form of competition. The land should not be located in a waterlogged area.
Planting: the seed is planted first in a nursery bag for close observation and gentle handling. As soon as the seedlings emerge, it is transplanted to the permanent site already prepared. Transplanting is best done early in the morning or late in the evening and during this period, care is taken not to mal-handle the seedlings.
Staking and caging: these should be established at the time of planting. The stake keeps the fruits of the ground to avoid contamination and the cage is to keep the plant growing upright.

Weeding: weeding should be done any time you see weeds sprouting. You do not necessarily need to wait for weeks or months before you weed, so as not to engage these tomatoes in any form of competition.
Fertilizer application: this is done after weeding to enrich the soil. It should be done bit by bit; after weeding, before flowering, and before fruiting. By so doing, the plant gets the nutrient it needs for each phase of growth. NPK fertilizer is good and also trace minerals are required for its growth and development and that should be given in right quantity
Watering and mulching: tomatoes are water-loving plants, therefore it should be watered generously but not to be waterlogged. The root surface should be covered with carefully selected grass free from pests because tomatoes are susceptible to pest and diseases.
Pest control: weeds are the host of most of the pest of tomatoes. If weeds are controlled perfectly well then there will not be a problem of pest. The last resort, if uncontrollable is to use pesticide.
Harvesting: tomato matures in 3months or thereabout, depending on the species. Some mature early while the others mature late. It turns from green to red when ripe. During this stage, there should be a constant check of the farm to pick the ripe ones as soon as possible to avoid contamination and spoilage. If possible, harvesting should be done according to size and color. Marketing should follow immediately after harvesting because of the perishable nature of tomato

This part is not difficult at all because of the popularity and usefulness of this crop and it can be consumed by both adult and children. This crop can be taken to any nearby market around you and it will be sold. It should be noted that tomato is perishable in nature and needs to be sold soon after harvesting.
Preservation Techniques of Tomato

Tomatoes are delicate and perishable within a short period of time if not preserved or store the right way. To store the tomatoes, put them in a wooden box, or a basket or you can use a carton. One can also dry the tomatoes and when you want to use, soak it in a hot water leave it for a while then use; this method last longer.

The fresh tomato can be processed into tomato paste, ketchup, tomato juice, tomato sauce, and so many other things.

Ugu farming In Nigeria is an important economic agribusiness that is profitable due to its edible leaves, popularity, acceptance and health benefits. Ugu also known as fluted pumpkin, scientific name: Telfairia
Occidentalis. The plant is grown by individuals mostly farmers in the West African region.
Ugu farming in Nigeria is among the small scale agribusiness which is becoming more and more popular, a lot of Nigerians are willing to grow Ugu in order to consume or to sell it for profit. And it is not capital intensive, it can be grown in your backyard. For one to start up an Ugu farming the person need to source for knowledge to start. Ugu farming can be done at any point in time so far there is a proper source of irrigation.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Ugu leaves (fluted pumpkin) leaves is one of those plants that secretly carry some unbelievable health benefits such as;

SOURCE FOR SEED
Before you think of starting ugu farming make sure you go for viable ugu seed. Make sure you source it from a disease-free pods, for proper development and growth of the seed.
GET A LAND
It is advisable that the land is close to your resident for easy monitoring. Try to know if the land is fertile, the size is determined by how small or large you want the farmland to be and then clear the land. And the best soil type is loamy.
SOIL TYPE
The best soil type is loamy soil.
LAND PREPARATION
After the land have been secured land preparation is important, you can hire labourers depending on the size of the land to till it and ease up the soil for easy permit traction of water to the soil. Consider supplementing the soil with lots of manure. It could be cow dung or poultry waste. The land needs to be ready at least two weeks before planting.
PLANTING OF UGU
Make a bed, remove the seeds from the pod and you have to remove all the juicy parts, allow it to dry before planting. The ideal time for planting is from April and May when rain is just starting for the season or at any time of the year with the help of irrigation. Dig a small hole of about 15cm-25cm deep, with spacing between 5cm. Then plant the seed and close it with soil. I will recommend covering it with grass also. This will reduce transpiration.
WEED CONTROL
However, you should weed whenever you see them sprouting up. Don't allow your ugu farm to complete or share nutrient with weeds. Weeding the farm is also good so as to reduce pest.
FERTILIZER APPLICATION
Organic manure or a nitrogenous fertilizer such as Urea and NPK (15:15:15) is the best to be applied on the farm they promote the growth of the leaves likewise the seed yield. This should be done one month when the seed has germinated.
HARVESTING
You can start harvesting 30days after planting.

Our core focus in this organization is addressing food insecurity, micronutrient deficiency, malnutrition, women and youth unemployment through Agriculture, Agricultural value chain and Agricultural waste management. We engage mainly in:
• Primary production of basic farm produce through our farm and network of farms
• Secondary production (Value-added agricultural products) from our sister company; CATO FOODS
• Agricultural knowledge impartation and practical training through our Farmers’ Academy
• Agricultural waste management through the utilization of waste from crops and animals to create and generate energy and other value-added products such as mushroom, biogas, biodiesel, etc
• Agribusiness and Agricultural produce exportation
• Agricultural consultancy services, Agro-logistics, market linkages, and farm networking
Our activities are targeted basically towards youths, women, young graduates, retirees and serving workers who are passionate about agriculture and willing to take it as a business.
