It is interesting to note that essentially, vaccination of Dogs puts you on the protective side of diseases by ensuring prevention of outbreak or incidence. Generally, the idea behind vaccination is to introduce a bit of the disease in particular or its weakened form to the system of the animal such that there is a stimulated response of the antibodies against such disease, therefore causing the animal to have a pre-emptive readiness to subdue such disease when it comes in its real form. In Dog breeding and production, vaccination does not only protect your dogs against disease, it also helps to ensure you are economically safe with the assurance of maximum productivity. The other part is that you are also sure of complete care and safety against deadly and zoonotic disease like Rabies. Vaccination of dogs is very crucial as much as your reasons for having those Dogs. In the reality, people who raise dogs for breeding purpose stands the chance of running at a loss if they will have to battle with curative measures against disease incidence in their dogs. Vaccinating dogs resolves the fact that disease could hamper or cause impossibility of mating dogs on heat, making only failure to observe or other management factors reasons to lose such period. For those raising Dogs as a pet, it means much to always have to spend on Dogs due to ill health as the cost is really high compared to doing a simple vaccination that will protect such dogs and keep them healthy for long. Altogether, it is unequivocal to state the justification for vaccination would not be made if disease prevalent in the environment of the Dogs are not first known and ascertained in order to really know which vaccines are essential to get them protected. On a general note, Dogs must be vaccinated against diseases that easily beset them and those that could cause disastrous implications on human health or loss of life to the Dog itself. Time course must be duly followed to ensure continual protection. Examples of vaccines used for dogs include ARV (anti-rabies vaccine) DHlPP. Vaccination Schedule in Dogs 6-8 weeks Distemper, measles, and parainfluenza 10-12 weeks DHPP (vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. 12-24 weeks Rabies Every 1-2 years DHPP Every 1-3 years Rabies Conclusion: Vaccination does not only protect your dogs against disease, it also helps to ensure you are economically safe with the assurance of maximum productivity. http://www.agricincome.com/vaccinations-of-dogs/ cc;lalasticlala |

Many fish farmer fails today because of lack of foresight to implement change at the appropriate time as the business runs. To run a successful fish farm, you need to able to move your business from one stage to another, so as to create wealth and build up sustainably. However imperative causes of why most fish farmers fail and possible solutions would be pointed out in this post: Poor Farm Location: Such as in a place with inadequate water supply, poor soils for pond construction (e.g. may be rocky), far away from markets and/or supplies, etc. Poor farm and facility design: Ponds not compacted properly, leak a lot, maybe too shallow, and consequently, construction and maintenance costs become too high while optimum yields are not achieved. Poor ease of access to ponds, requiring workers to walk across difficult terrain to transfer fish from pond to vehicle or vice-versa. Poor Investment Plan: Several farmers assume that to be a commercial fish farmer one must have several large ponds. Hence, they construct many ponds at once, which constrains their cash flow. Because of this, some farmers take a while to start production or may only afford to start production in one pond after all the investment. Lack of Marketing strategy: most farmers Start looking for the market for fish when the fish is ready for sale. Meanwhile, because they are still feeding, the pond attains its maximum limit and fish stop growing. The longer the fish stay in the pond after they have stopped growing, the smaller the profit margin. Not employing the right staffs: Employ the right people. Employing family members who have little or no passion to learn fish farming techniques is a liability because most people find it difficult to dismiss them even after it has become obvious that they are the reason for the poor performance of the fish farm. Manage farms by remote control or telephone: No direct involvement in production and management activities of the farm. Irregular and improper feeding: This ranges from complete lack of knowledge about the nutritional requirements and feeding of fish to reduce cost by using cheap feeds. Some farmers just do not feed their fish because they think fish will grow as long as they are in the water. They do not realize that like all animals, best performance would be obtained if the fish are fed a balanced ration and that the feed needs to be palatable, easily digestible and does not disintegrate into the water before the fish can consume it. Fish should be fed with the correct feed of the right quality. Lack of proper record to assess performance or re-adjust management practices accordingly after each cycle: A farmer is therefore unable to tell whether a profit or loss will have been made. Having money in one’s pocket after a sale does not imply one has made a profit. Some farmers do not want to keep records because they are scared of facing the harsh realities of a loss. Unless one is able to face the bitter truth and correct his/her management practices, there won’t be any improvements and the business will eventually collapse. Expand the business as a solution to low profit and yields: It is a bad business decision to expand a failing business without first finding out what the causes of the failure are and correcting them. http://www.agricincome.com/fish-farm/#more-303 cc;lalasticlala |

if you are thinking about starting fish farming as an agribusiness, you need to consider some important factors that may affect the success and profitability of the fish farming business. When siting a fish farm, the following are among the major considerations one should take into account: Availability of suitable land with a reliable source of water and good climatic history e.g. land with no history of flood. Accessibility to the Site for the supply of inputs and for taking the product to the market. Accessibility and distances from one’s sources of inputs as well as to the market affect transporting costs. Being close to the market and sources of supply reduces one's transport costs and can make a difference on profit margins. Market availability and accessibility. If one is retailing directly from the farm, for example, it is much better to have the farm located as close to the market as possible. If, on the other hand, one intends to do bulk sales once in a while, then the farm can be further away from the market as you would be transporting and delivering large amounts to one destination probably once a week or month. Also, bear in mind that fish is a highly perishable commodity when fresh. If one is to supply fresh fish and does not have facilities for live transportation or holding fish alive, invest in this equipment. If the market requires smoked products, the farm would take into account easy access to the correct type of firewood and ability to process and smoke large amounts of fish in that environment. Other land uses in the vicinity. All fish farmers should take note of what sort of activities going on in their surroundings because of their potential impact on your production and product quality. Care should especially be given to activities that are likely to affect the quality and volume of water to the farm. For example, it is not recommended to site a fish farm where the effluent from factories enters your water source, as most probably the effluent is likely to have a negative effect on the quality of water for fish production. Utilities. Does the production technology you intend to adopt (e.g.for storage of fish) require that you need power? If it does, then the farm should be in a location easily accessible to power. . Roads and other Transport Networks. These influence accessibility and costs of getting to the farm. Social Aspects. For example, it would not be wise to set-up a commercial smokery in the middle of a residential area as your neighbors might complain. http://www.agricincome.com/fish-farming-2/

An adequate rabbit feed must contain lots of fresh, green vegetative matter. Rabbits are nocturnal, and eat more at night. Rabbits eat most anything green, just like goats and cows. Rabbits like fresh food. Give them fresh feed twice a day; once in the morning and plenty at night. Rabbits Feeds Here are some of the best feeds for rabbits: Legumes: These are all types of plants, vines, shrubs, and trees that produce a pod that splits on a single seam. The leaves of these plants are some of the best feeds for rabbits because they are high in protein. Examples are leaves of pigeon pea, peanut, beans, cowpea, Grass: Rabbits eat all kinds of grasses such as guinea grass, elephant grass, maize and millet leaves. Trees: There are many tree leaves rabbits will eat such as banana, mango, moringa. Fruit: Rabbits love fruit. Feed them all the fruit that cannot be sold or eaten by humans such as overripe bananas (with the peel), mangoes, pawpaw, avocados, pineapple, and guava. Leaves of cultivated plants: Sweet potato, maize, green beans, carrot tops, cabbage, and so on. Market waste: Rabbits thrive on market waste such as waste lettuce, cabbage, carrots, apples, and other fruits and vegetables. Concentrate: formulated feed or pelleted feeds made up of ingredients such as: maize, soybean, PKC, GNC, wheat offals, maize bran etc Points to be considered in feeding management of rabbits • Rabbits require a variety of feed: It is not good to feed rabbits just one kind of feed for a long period of time. Always include two or three different kinds of forages in their feed. It is best to mix vines, tree leaves, plant leaves, and kitchen scraps. By offering several kinds, they get more complete nutrients in their food. What one feed lacks, another will add to the diet. • Do not put rabbit feed on the cage floor where the rabbits can walk and urinate on it. Feed should be placed in a feeder that keeps the leaves above the rabbits, off the floor. If rabbits are allowed to trample their feed, it will wilt, be soiled and unfit for consumption. When caring for rabbits, remove the feed they have not consumed. • The time schedule for feeding should be maintained strictly. If it is late in feeding of rabbits, they become restless and which in turn reduces the body weight • Due to high temperature in the daytime the rabbits won’t take much feed during daytime. But they are active in the night. Therefore green fodders are to be fed to the rabbits in the night, while concentrate should be served in the morning. • Concentrate feed can be given in the form of pellets. If pellet feed is not available the concentrate feed mixed with water and before given to the rabbits • Clean fresh water should be provided to rabbits at all times of the day Note: When introducing new feed to the rabbits, give it to them in small quantity for several days and observe them to make sure they can adapt to it. This is required for whatever you are feeding them with, whether greens, fruit, grain or concentrate. http://www.agricincome.com/rabbits-feeds-and-feeding-management/ cc;lalasticlala |
Turkey Production in Nigeria Turkey farming is now gradually increasing in Nigeria because of the awareness and many benefits derived from rearing turkeys. Turkey supply eggs and can be source of meat and their multi-coloured plumage can be used for decorations. The poultry industry in Nigeria is expanding rapidly and meat and egg production is an important aspect in satisfying the undying needs and wants of the people. Turkey population in Nigeria Turkeys in Nigeria are primarily reared for meat or as breeders to produce hatching eggs. They are rarely kept for the production of table eggs though the eggs are edible. The growth of turkey industry in Nigeria has risen to 1.5- 2 million tons per year. This fast growth in the industry was made possible by intensification of production and development of large breeds with standard weights ranging from 15- 17kg for male and 8-10kg for females. Some of these come from homestead. Breeds and varieties in Nigeria Most turkeys that are reared here in Nigeria are resultant crossing between the large size and small size turkeys and also the exotic breed which are been imported from overseas but, are now in much circulation across the country. Economic potential of turkey Production Turkey production in Nigeria has largely remained at the small holder level due to various reasons ranging from management problems to lack of incentives by the government. There is also obvious lack of information on specific requirement for turkey production in Nigeria which may be attributed to low level of research in Nigeria. Moreso, the lack of interest on turkey production was mainly due to the government policy that liberalized turkey importation since 1977. But, the trend has changed, due to the imposed ban on importation of turkeys in Nigeria. This has actually given room to young farmers who want to venture into the production of turkeys( Be it local or the exotic breed) which has great potentials in the supply of good quality animal protein/which Nigerians are lacking according to WHO and FAO and high rate of turnover of investment. Potential Benefits Turkey don’t need much market persuasion before you can make them. You can sell as much turkeys has possible within a day with the right market survey • Turkey farming business in Nigeria is not capital intensive as people imagine it to be. As a young farmer, you can start small • The more local breeds produce the less the need to import. This will enhance demand and increase supply locally. • They have high return on investments with the proper knowledge and adequate facilities. • Turkey are easy to manage in terms of handling and transportation. • Empowerment, due to self-employment and employing others. Things to consider when establishing turkey farm • If the poultry setup is wrong, you will end up losing your birds. (In terms of building orientation, nature of the site and your farm location). • The poultry should be well protected against predators. • Maximum hygiene (In terms of keeping your environment and biosecurity measures). • Proper feeding: to enhance growth and good market return. • Get your poults(young turkeys) from reputable farms or breeders • Proper vaccination schedule. http://www.agricincome.com/turkey-production-in-nigeria/#more-265

When an agripreneur establishes an agri-business, a great deal of work goes into making it a success. Experienced agripreneur will tell you that success in agribusiness is planned and does not happen by accident. Several factors contribute to the success of livestock farms in Nigeria, and understanding what they are and how they work together can help your agri-business succeed. Fund: Fund must be available as when needed according to plan to avoid creating stress factors which would cost so much in revenue loss. Housing: Proper ventilation and spacing is a critical success factor. Position your house to give the animal’s maximum ventilation and reduce heat. Biosecurity: Disease entrance and spread are as a result of any form of breach in biosecurity. Foot bath, car bath, prohibition of unauthorized persons etc. Water: Watering and water source is of great importance. Bad water source or water getting contaminated in livestock farm signifies that the farm will fail. Water should be managed to ensure that clear and clean water is available to the animals ad libitum. Nutrient: Most livestock farm’s fail because they wanted to reduce the cost of feed by compounding feeds. Farms should only venture into self-compounding with available ingredients. All nutrients must be readily available in the market to prevent malnutrition. Expertise: Training and retraining of staff are important no matter how small the level and acquisition of knowledge of modern trend is a factor to growth. Consultancy is paramount Sales: products produced must be sold. Proper marketing with vigorous advertisement will ensure the product is made available to the target market. Management: Pilfering shrinkages, indulgence, misappropriation are few of the several epidemics that constantly plaque livestock farms in Nigeria. Workers steal animals, eggs, feed, money and even drugs if they are not properly monitored. Sales agents and drivers could sell at different prices and report differently. Effective management of this ends are critical factors. Administration: At full capacity, Management is separated from the administration, when the owner is not directly involved in the day to day management. Absentee farming is hazardous. Someone with stake in the venture should give quality time to it to survive. http://www.agricincome.com/factors-contribting-to-sucess-of-livestock-farms/#more-260 cc;lalasticlala

With our undaunted commitment to insight and inform youth and the diaspora about the importance of agriculture in leveraging the Nation's economy, to get them participates in agriculture, Agric Income team decided to embark on educative farm tours. This informed our choice of visiting a well renowned farm in Osun State. The courtesy visit took us to Agrikk Matas Ede, Osun State. I have the honour to present to you the CEO of Agrik Matas, also the President All farmers Association of Nigeria Osun State Chapter… Read further as you get to know more about him. Agricincome: Please can you introduce yourself to our readers and your farming background? Agrik matas: my name is Farmer Afolabi Kayode, I graduated from Osun State college of Arts (OSSCA) in 1986. Progressed to University of Ibadan where I graduated in1989. N.Y.S.C 1989/90. P.GD, Public Administration in O.A.U. M.Sc., Pub. Admin in O.A.U, 1996/1998 M.B.A in O.A.U 1998-2000. Presently, I am undertaking my Ph.D. at a university in U.S.A. I graduated about 30years ago with a strong conviction of not to work under anybody. That has been my vigour, though I've wandered in so many trades and businesses. I firstly started as a photographer, then onto merchandising, Coca-Cola distributor, guest housing and table water production. Lastly into cinematography, which I later resorted into fish farming, and today, Agrik Matas. Fish farming is the genesis of Agrikk Matas farm. It was established on February 13th, 2014. At first when I started, I incurred #600,000 into fish farming with 3000 juvenile. I realised #15,000 (more or less a loss). I felt so bad but I stayed determined. Consequentially development set in and today Agrikk Matas stand on a land mass of 20 acres. Today, the farm has developed into extensive livestock and crop production. Now, we are into: ¤ Massive crop plantation - oil palm, cocoa and cassava plantation. Also tomatoes and pepper plantation. ¤ Commercial fish, cassava and mushroom production and processing. ¤ Nursery/seedlings for cash crops, tomato and pepper. ¤ Plantain plantation ¤ Piggery, goat and ram rearing and poultries. ¤ Fish hatching and juvenile sales ¤ Product and agrochemical sale and many more. ¤ We are also into training and consultancy. Agricincome: How long have you been in the business? Agrik matas: 12 years Agricincome: What’s is the secret of the success you have achieved so far? Agrik matas: The Grace of God, perseverance, and strong determination to succeed Agricincome: What were the main challenges you face since the inception of your business? Agrik matas: Number one challenge is funding and the second challenge is unfavourable government policies. Agricincome: How can youth be encouraged into practising agriculture? Agrik matas: One of the sure way it can be done is through training and empowerment programmes for youth passionate about farming. Government should provide capital, training and empowerment programmes for youths should more or less be free. Agricincome: What advice would you give to youths seeking a career in agribusiness? Agrik matas: Check your passion before venturing into Agriculture. . Search where your passion fits. Don't be enticed with quick money, though it pays. Gain comes overtime. • Get a mentor Agricincome: A lot of people think that agriculture is a quick way to get rich, what is your stand about this? Agrik matas: This depends on the level at which you invest and your managerial ability. Even the lazy wants riches. It could be and it couldn't be. It could get you -rich-fast if you cultivate products like vegetables that grows for 6-8weeks or agro processing...but for cultivation of cash crop, you'd wait for at least two or three years. Agricincome: what are the marketing strategies adopted at Agrikk matas? Agrik Matas: we have several market channels in Osogbo and other locations. It is also important that you do a market survey, even before starting up the business. Agricincome: Thank you for your time sir Agrik Matas: You are welcome Source; http://www.agricincome.com/interview-section-check-passion-venturing-agriculture/ cc:lalasticlala

Agric Income team led by the founder Farotimi Olaoluwa arrived at Agrikk Mata Ede, Osun State around 8.30am on 17th February 2018. We were duly received by the owner of the farm, Farmer Kayode Afolabi and his wife. Before going around the farm, we had an interview section with the CEO Agrikk Matas Mr. Afolabi Kayode who coincidentally is also the President of All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter shared with us his experience and startup stories. The farm, sitting on a 20 acres land mass, was established on February 13, 2014, with fish farming alone. It then progresses to livestock (sheep, goats, bee etc.) and crop production (cassava, tomatoes, pepper, oil palm, plantain etc.). The farm also offers training and consultancy services. There is also a processing plant which can prosecute cassava fish and mushroom production. Mr. Kayode Afolabi shared the secret of the success of the farm over the years, he said even though the government has not been proactive in terms of Agricultural development, the determination to succeed coupled with the grace of God has been the driving force for the business, hard work and on-time supervision of all the sectors in the farm. When asked about the marketing strategies he has been adopting over the years, he said that he has several market channels in Osogbo and other locations. He also stressed the importance of doing a market survey, even before starting any agri-business. After the interview section, we were taking around the various section of the farm. The farm is carefully divided into the following sections: 1. The mushroom section which comprises of the mixing room, inoculation room, and a laboratory. 2. Relaxation area 3. Bagging area. 4. Oil palm nursery where the Tenera species are kept prior to their sales. 5. Agrochemical sales point 6. Fish feed depot 7. Sucker multiplication zone 8. Hatchery (which can house 200,000 juveniles per cycle) 9. A sorting/ counting room where juveniles are counted before sales 10. A feed mill (a project in progress) 11. A nursery section for Tomatoes and pepper 12. Concrete ponds (which can house over 5000 fishes of different species) 13. A fish processing room built to NAFDAC specification. It has electric, gas and charcoal ovens. 14. A cold room. 15. Garri processing plant 16. Grasscutter section 17. Over 20 Earthen ponds of different sizes 18. Piggery 19. Greenhouses (which housed tomato, and pepper of different varieties). Agrikk Matas is well equipped with good housing designed to ensure it meets the requirement of a standard farm. After going around the farm, he expressed his appreciation and also advised us to go into farming because it is profitable and sustainable. The team left the farm around 10:45 am with memories of good farming practices worth sharing with beginners and practicing farmers. http://www.agricincome.com/agricincome-tour-agrikk-matas-ede-osun-state/
