Culture / Ife Chiefs Announce Ooni’s Death Formally (photo) by maxism2: 4:36pm On Aug 12, 2015
The Ife Traditional Council has formally announced the death of Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

The chiefs, accompanied by Prince Tokunbo Sijuwade, officially announced the demise of the monarch while meeting with Governor Rauf Aregbesola at the Government House in Osogbo on Wednesday.

One of the chiefs, Oba Solomon Omisakin, told the governor that the Ooni had joined his ancestors.

The monarch, who was flown out in an air ambulance, died on July 28, in a London hospital.

The visit of the chiefs to the governor was the second in about 15 days since the media reported the death of the monarch.

The chiefs led by the Lowa of Ife, Oba Joseph Ijaodola, had on July 29th debunked the reports of the death of the monarch.

The following day, they took their rebuttal to the Government House where they briefed the governor and told him before journalists that the monarch was very much alive.

Earlier in the day, the Isoros were seen in some parts of Ile Ife singing dirges, which is one of the precursors leading to the formal announcement of the death of the Ooni.

The Isoros were said to be dressed in white clothes and carried earthen pots and embarked on a procession outside the palace gate to Enuwa Square.

Agriculture / Soldiers Kill Hippopotamus In Gombe State by maxism2: 6:04pm On Aug 08, 2015
This thread https://www.nairaland.com/2506687/photos-mighty-hippopotamus-caught-gombe made home page the other day, but much details were not given about how the hippopotamus was killed. Here is everything you need to know about it...

A hippopotamus that has terrorized residents around Dadin-Kowa dam and environs in Yamaltu-Deba local government of Gombe state for the past two years has been killed by men of the 301 Artillery Regiment, Gombe.

Head of Forestry Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Council, Malam Ismail Umar who confirmed the killing of the animal added that the wild beast had constituted a major threat to the lives of fishermen and farmers as well as destroying their equipments and farm lands for the past two and the half years.

“We discovered it since the last two and half years, but unfortunately it has become very notorious and hazardous to people, farmers and fishermen.

“The people wrote to the local government council authorities complaining about the damages it was causing them, and we forwarded to the ministry, seeking the approval of the Governor.

“We received the approval last week, and we decided to go hunting for it, which we took over a week before we finally got it Wednesday night.
“We were lucky to trap it outside; we used military men to shoot it with the help of the local hunters.

“We shot it yesterday night around 10:30 pm when it came out to eat grasses, and today we butchered it in to pieces.

He said there were about 100 of them in the water, “but the one that was killed decided to cross to the lower side of the dam”.

Mr Adamu Pukuma, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment and Forest Resources acknowledged that Hippopotamus is one among the animal that were going instinct and therefore under protection, but that the particular one that was killed had become notorious.

“It killed people around the area as well as destroyed people’s farms and fishing equipment.

“There were complaints and huge outcry from the people of the area that was why we sought for the Governor’s approval and killed it” he said.

Politics / Buhari And Saraki Still Not On Speaking Terms Despite Praying Together -thecable by maxism2: 1:51pm On Jul 21, 2015
Hopes of a rapprochement between President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki have continued to fade by the day.
The No. 1 and No. 3 citizens are still not on speaking terms despite saying the eid-el-fitr prayers together on Friday July 17, TheCable can report.

In a widely publicised photograph, Saraki next to Buhari at the praying ground in Abuja, fuelling speculations that the Ramadan, the Muslims’ holiest month, might have helped to break the ice between them.

But presidency sources have told TheCable that if anything, “the relationship has grown colder and the coming weeks promise to be very tense between the two men”.

There are no phone calls, private meetings or exchanges of correspondence between them, according to presidency insiders.
TheCable understands that Saraki had tried all possible avenues to have a one-on-one meeting with Buhari but did not get the green light, although both men have met in public on a couple of occasions and produced the obligatory handshake and smile.

Efforts by some top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to broker a truce have failed, with Buhari insisting that Saraki’s “act of betrayal” will not go unpunished.

Saraki, who co-ordinated fund-raising efforts for Buhari for the 2015 presidential election, was controversially elected senate president when the national assembly was inaugurated on June 8.

The party preferred Ahmad Lawan, who is also thought to be Buhari’s choice although the president openly denied having any personal choice.
The situation was further worsened by the choice of principal officers outside of the senators picked by the party hierarchy.

The crisis generated by the national assembly leadership elections has continued to stall legislative proceedings as the APC tries to assert its authority on its preferred candidates.

Not a single motion has been passed by either of the chambers since the inauguration which also produced Yakubu Dogara as speaker as against Femi Gbajabiamila preferred by some key APC figures.

Saraki and Dogara, both defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were endorsed by their former party in the national assembly leadership race.

Both chambers are expected to resume on July 28 after shifting the date from July 21 in order to allow for tensions to die down and outstanding matters to be resolved.

Education / I Inherited 1,200 Cases Of Exam Malpractices —LASU VC by maxism2: 5:48pm On Jan 07, 2015
The Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, Professor John Obafunwa, has revealed that when he became the administrative head of the institution, it had over 1,000 cases of examination malpractices pending.

Obafunwa, who became the Vice Chancellor of LASU at the height of the crises that led to the removal of Lateef Hussein some years ago, said his nephew was one of those indicted among the 1,000 cases and that he refused to succumb to pressure from family members to save the student.

The VC, who was summoned to the state House of Assembly with some of his management staff for disobeying a resolution of the House, also said he faced serious threats to his life when he decided to look into the cases and get the students punished.

Prof. John Obafunwa

Shocked by the revelation, Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji asked for the total number of students in the institution and Professor Obafunwa gave the figure as 8,000.

The House had summoned Obafunwa to appear and tell the lawmakers why he disobeyed the resolution that Mr. Toviho Oluwaseyi Ezekiel, a student who was not to allowed graduate over issues of examination malpractices, be pardoned and set free “on compassionate grounds.”

The House took the resolution late last year after an ad-hoc committee it set up to look into the petition brough by Mr. Toviho, presented its report.

It was learnt that Ezekiel was alleged to have committed the offence in his year one in 2010. Part of the sanction was that he would re-write the particular course, which he wrote while in year two.

Since then, he continued to pay his fees, attend classes and write examinations. But while his mates were heading for the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Toviho said his name was not submitted to the NYSC even though his final result was released.

He said he was told that he could not partake in the NYSC programme because he was involved in examination malpractice.

The House had thought it unjustifiable that the student would be punished after the institution made him believe he had been pardoned.

The House then sent a resolution urging the institution to allow the student graduate and partake in the NYSC programme.

Last week, Toviho wrote again to the House to complain that the institution was yet to clear him despite the resolution of the House.

However, two of the lawmakers supported the institution’s action, saying cases of examination malpractices should be treated as such. But one of the lawmakers, Adebimpe Akinsola, told the House that the issue was no longer whether the student committed the offence, but on why the resolution of the House was disobeyed.

Akinsola’s argument was unanimously supported by her other colleagues.

Obafunwa told the lawmakers at the sitting that Toviho was just one of the cases.

When asked why he disobeyed the resolution of the House which was sent to him, Obafunwa said freeing Ezekiel would affect the institution’s policy since he was not the only one who was indicted.

“The matter was handled by the Exam Malpractice Committee of the Faculty of Management Sciences as well as others in the school and the University Governing Council is yet to meet since October, 2014, when we got the resolution.

“The next meeting of the council will hold on January 20th,” he also told the lawmakers.

Ikuforiji, while emphasising the importance of the resolution, said the resolution should be obeyed.

He also urged the Vice Chancellor to ensure that the issue is discussed at the meeting of the Governing Council and that Toviho’s case is handled satisfactorily.

Crime / He Shared Cars & Left Me Out - Herbalist Who Organised Kidnap Of Philanthropist by maxism2: 1:19pm On Jan 03, 2015
. BY CHIOMA IGBOKWE

Operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja police command, Lagos State have finally hunted down the alleged mastermind of the kidnap of Durodola Muwalu, manager and younger brother of the owner of Dam-jay Hotel located in Ikorodu, Prince Jacob Araba. He is Adekoya Oni, a native of Agbowa Ikosi in Epe Local Government Area and a herbalist with about 27 years experience.

It was reported two weeks ago that SARS tracked and arrested a four-man gang of kidnapers in their hideout in Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State. In the process, they also rescued their latest victim, Durodola Muwalu, who had been in their custody for 11 days.

The suspects were Felix Ikuomola, Gbenga Popoola, Sunday Akibi and Azeez Olowu. In their confessional statement, they alleged that a certain man, known to them as Baba Agbodi (Adekoya) was the one who gave them the contract and also provided all necessary details and logistics.

On the circumstances surrounding his arrest, Saturday Sun gathered that Adekoya, on realising that his game was up, left town with an excuse that he went to visit his sick mother. Two weeks later, he returned in the hope that police had stopped searching for him. He was said to have bragged to the community that, although the gang mentioned him during their confession, no policeman would dare enter his shrine. He was later arrested inside his shrine while attending to his customers.

Face-to-face with his accusers, Adekoya claimed that the only reason he allowed them to go ahead with the kidnapping was because Prince Jacob Araba, who is known as a generous philanthropist, bought cars for the community leaders and exempted him. “I am the son of the former baale (traditional ruler) in our community and a renowned herbalist. I deserve all the respect I should get in this community. So, I felt bad that Prince Araba shared cars and did not give me. I was happy when these boys consulted me. I did not give them the contract, I only consented to the kidnap.”

He admitted that the gang met with him twice in his office. “I have known Gbenga for a long time. We met when his mother brought his pregnant wife to me for prayers. I told them what to do and they failed to abide by my instruction. The baby died at birth.

“So, I was not surprised when he came with four other young men to seek my consent. I only told them that it was a good idea and advised them that it would be better to kidnap his brother, Muwalu. The person that I have issues with is the brother of Prince Araba; he is the one who advised Prince Araba not to include my name in the list of those who he bought cars for. Muwalu is a wicked, greedy man and I know that Prince Araba will pay anything to save his brother. My only crime here is that I did not report to the police, but it was their idea,” Adekoya said.

However, members of the gang, who are still in police custody, insist that he was the mastermind of the abduction.

Daring him to refute their claim, Azeez said that during the meeting, when they raised the issue of police, he assured that he would exonerate them. “He is lying. I dare him to refute his statement during our last meeting that if we were arrested, he would stand and ask for our release. He said that policemen fear him. This was why, as soon as we were arrested, we mentioned his name. I am shocked that he could deny us even while alive.’

On what really transpired, Azeez alleged that Oju called them that there was a need to arrange a job so that he could raise money for his child’s naming ceremony. “He was desperate and as friends who had done jobs (robbery) in the past, we decided to help him if he could get any contact. Two days later, he called and told us that Baba Agbodi had a good deal for us. He scheduled a meeting and myself, Gbenga and Oju went to his office in the Itoki area of Ikorodu. He is well known in the community. He told us that our target is very rich and would pay anything to secure the release of any of his family members. We agreed to share the loot equally, even as he provided all the necessary information. We tried twice to pick him at the hotel but left out of fear of being caught.

“On the day Muwalu was abducted, he was the one who called and informed us that the target was close by. He advised that we should pick him close to his house as the road is very bad and he would surely slow down. He was watching from afar, so that he would not be caught since he was well known. He even called to congratulate us as soon as we succeeded.

“When we were running out of cash, we called him to assist us with small money since there was delay in paying the ransom. He was angry and said that we were not putting much pressure on Prince Araba. We even called to inform him that the police were looking for us and he advised that we should relocate,” Azeez alleged.

Also, Gbenga, laughing sarcastically at Adekoya’s denial, said he was the brain behind the kidnap. “We have been arrested, the best thing is to tell the truth and make peace with God. It was my mother who took me and my pregnant wife to his office for spiritual consultation. Unfortunately, I lost the child. He is a herbalist and well respected. In the past, he had done a lot of prayers for me and my family and it worked. If you want to do any illegal job, he was looked upon for spiritual guidance. I was happy that he was the one who brought the job. This meant that it would be very successful. This was why I quickly made all the necessary arrangements. He was the one who chose the victim and gave us direction on how to go about it. Stop lying,” Gbenga screamed at Adekoya.

The man who was rescued, Muwalu was grateful to God for sparing his life and said that he had finished the day’s work and was heading home in his brother’s car (the owner of the hotel) when the kidnappers blocked him close to his house.

“I was heading home in my brother’s car at about 8.30pm, when a car blocked me and about three men, heavily armed, stepped down and asked me to get out of the car. They dragged me out of the car into another one and tied me up. They also blindfolded me. They later took me to a house after several hours of driving.

“They were calling me Chief Araba and I told them that I am not the one. I told them that I am his manager and they started beating me mercilessly. I pleaded for my life and they said that I should give them my oga’s number so that they would call him. I was there when they called him, demanding N60million. I told them that they were carrying the wrong person. I have not seen N6million not to talk of N60million in my entire life.

“The more I pleaded, the more beating I got. They kept me tied up in the room and only gave me water to drink. This was what sustained me till I was rescued,” Muwalu narrated.

Surprised at the identity of the man behind the kidnap, Chief Jacob Araba, who was the initial target, said he knew little or nothing about Adekoya, the suspect. “I am a philanthropist and by the special grace of God, I have enough to feed my family. I do not know the man but I was told that he had benefitted a lot from my gestures to the community. I always ensure that I encourage the leaders of the community to keep the area safe. I am happy that they have been arrested except Oju, who I learnt is still on the run. I have confidence in the Nigeria police for once in my life. I thank CP Kayode Aderanti for allowing his detectives, led by SP Kyari, to rescue my brother and arrest the criminals.”

Confirming the arrest, Lagos State Command Police spokesman, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said that police are still on the trail of the remaining member of the gang, Oju. “The Commissioner of Police is determined to rid the state of all criminal elements. It does not matter how far you go, the hand of the law must surely catch up with you. We also encourage residents to be conscious of who their neighbours are and report any criminal activities in their area.”

Politics / 2015: Jonathan Vows To Crack Down On Troublemakers by maxism2: 1:41am On Jan 01, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan has vowed to deal decisively with anyone who may decide to foment trouble before, during and after the 2015 general elections.

He said he would wield the big stick against troublemakers because of the post-2011 elections violence that erupted in some parts of the country.

Jonathan read the Riot Act in his New Year message broadcast on radio and television networks early on Thursday morning.

He said his administration would not tolerate a repeat of the 2011 orgy of violence.

“After the 2011 general elections, some unpatriotic elements embarked on an orgy of violence, resulting in the destruction of lives and property. That will not be allowed to happen this time around. This government will act decisively against anyone who disrupts the public peace, before, during or after the 2015 general elections,” the President declared.

Jonathan observed that the general elections were important for the country, saying their successful conclusion would further strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and place it more firmly in the comity of truly democratic nations.

He said given the challenges that had characterised some previous electoral contests in the country, the eyes of the world would be on the conduct and outcome of what he described as the nation’s fifth post-military rule general elections.

He reassured Nigerians and the international community of his administration’s commitment to free, fair and credible elections.

The President added, “My commitment to free elections and one man, one vote remains unwavering. Our administration has worked hard in previous elections to prepare all key stakeholders including the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and the electorate optimally, to ensure a progressively improved electoral process in the country under my watch. We will continue to do so for the coming elections.

“We will continue to provide adequate funding to INEC and maintain the commission’s independence and isolate it from any form of interference or meddling in its day-to-day affairs. This shall continue to guarantee its impartiality and ability to conduct more credible and acceptable elections.

“The national security agencies will also be given all necessary support to enhance their ability to ensure that the elections are peaceful and violence-free.”

Jonathan reiterated his position that no political ambition was worth the blood of any Nigerian.

He urged politicians, as they carry out their campaigns, not to promote sectionalism, disunity or hate.

Jonathan further advised them to conduct their campaigns with decorum and civility towards opponents.

“Let us not promote sectionalism, disunity, intolerance, hate, falsehood or the malicious abuse of political opponents. Whatever we feel or seek, we must have a nation and a people before we can dream of political ambitions. Let us put the nation and the people first.

“Let us all conduct our electoral campaigns with the highest possible decorum and civility towards political opponents. Let us give INEC the fullest possible support and cooperation it requires to conduct credible and violence-free elections in 2015,” the President added.

He said all Nigerians of voting age were free to vote during the elections based on their convictions.

Jonathan also assured Nigerians that political campaigns and the general elections would not distract his administration from its ongoing efforts to improve their living conditions.

He promised that his involvement in the campaigns and election as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party notwithstanding, he would remain focused on providing good governance and delivering better public services to Nigerians.

He said, “Being very conscious of the inherent perils of our over-reliance on income from crude oil exports for national development, we have focused on accelerating the diversification of our economy.

“The non-oil sector, which has grown by an average of eight per cent in the last few years, is now a major driver of growth in our economy.

“The 2015 national budget, which is now before the National Assembly, is targeted at deepening our efforts at becoming a non-oil economy.

“The budget also includes measures to ensure that the downturn in the price of oil does not affect our development plans and our national economy too adversely. We are adjusting our financial processes to safeguard our economy. We are also taking steps to ensure that the poor and the low and medium income earners do not bear the brunt.

“In 2015, this administration will continue to lay the foundation for a vibrant economy that attracts significant Foreign Direct Investment and promotes policies that ensure economic stability.

“We will ensure stability in the value of the Naira by striving to take away speculative behaviours that cause market exchange pressures.

“We will continue to build and maintain a healthy external reserves position and strengthen fiscal buffers. We will ensure the Naira remains strong, and gives foreign investors the clarity and certainty that they need, to guide future investment decisions.

“We will continue to improve our payment systems and strengthen risk-based supervision mechanism for Nigerian banks to ensure overall health and stability of the banking system.”

Wishing Nigerians a happy and prosperous 2015, the President urged them to enter the new year with renewed hope, patriotism and zeal to serve their fatherland.

He reiterated his position that all the challenges facing the nation are surmountable.

“As I have always maintained, none of the challenges before us is insurmountable. We must come together as a people and work with single-minded unity of purpose to overcome them.

“As we go into this New Year, I salute the indomitable and resilient spirit of our people in Nigeria and wherever they are in the world. Our spirit of enterprise and the doggedness to succeed amongst all odds has been our strength.”

The President praised the gallant officers, men and women of the Armed Forces and other security agencies who have been in the forefront of the war against terrorism and violent extremism in Nigeria.

Politics / YULETIDE: Oil Communities Reject Agip’s Goat,10 Bags Of Rice by maxism2: 1:36pm On Dec 29, 2014
There was mild drama in Nembe communities of Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa over the offer of a goat and 10 bags of rice to the elders and people of the area by the management of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NOAC).

The offer, meant as Christmas gift to the host communities of Nembe Kingdom, was, however, turned down by the people through the Oil and Gas committee headed by Chief Nengi James Orioworio.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the people of the oil rich Nembe Kingdom were angry because the gift items of a goat and 10 bags of rice was meant to be shared by the people of the communities and fishing settlements headed by a one-time minster of Power and the Amanayabo of Nembe Kingdom, King Edmund Daukoru.

Confirming the development in a statement issued yesterday and made available to newsmen, the Chairman of the Nembe Oil and Gas committee, Chief Nengi James Orioworio, described the gift as “a corporate embarrassment to the traditional institution and the good people of Nembe Kingdom which the people will never take kindly”.

Orioworio recalled a meeting with the General Manager District of the company when he visited King Edmund Dakoru, the Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom alongside his management team where issues of corporate social responsibilities were addressed.

He noted that for Agip to give 10 bags of rice and one goat to a community of about 500,000 people is a clear demonstration of the crass insensitivity of the multinational company to the community which is a major hub of Agip’s operations.

James stressed that the people of Nembe are a contented people who will never be cowed by any Greek gift that will cause disaffection among the people of the area.

According to him, Nembe Kingdom is in dire need of development and employment for the teeming unemployed youths alongside environmental protection. He warned that if this issue is not properly handled, it could affect the harmonious relationship and peaceful coexistence between the company and the community.

Politics / Revealed: Buhari’s Aides Who Are Born-again Christians by maxism2: 12:39pm On Dec 29, 2014
List Includes His Cook, Drivers & P.A
Up until very recently, many Nigerians had been made to believe that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is an Islamic fundamentalist. In a bid to tar his image, a lot of articles had appeared in the newspapers painting him as a rabid Moslem who wants to propagate Sharia across Nigeria.
Some of those who have taken that view had over the last few months described him as ethno-religious fundamentalist. Some others have called him an extremist. They often cite as example his 27th August 2001 statement, “I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia Movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria. God willing we would not stop the agitation for the total implementation of Sharia in the country”. But City People investigations reveal that Buhari may not be the Islamic fundamentalist they say he is.
This is because all those who have worked closely with him have revealed that contrary to that popular view, they have never seen any evidence of fundamentalism in his behaviour First is a former Minister of Petroleum, Professor Tam David-West, who last week said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Mohammadu Buhari, “is not a fundamentalist.
Delivering a public lecture on the topic: “Corruption and Insecurity: Model for Nigeria”, at the 60th anniversary of the Kuti Hall, University of Ibadan, he said Buhari is not an Islamic fundamentalist, David-West commented: “I am an Anglican fundamentalist. I am a Christian fundamentalist and I am proud to be that. A fundamentalist is different from an extremist. A fundamentalist believes exactly in his religion. I believe the Bible is sacred. If you’re an Islamic fundamentalist, it means that Quran is sacred. It is different from being an extremist.
“I have said this and nobody challenged me; three of Buhari’s cooks are Christians. I have published it many times. His second security officer is a Christian, his second driver is a Christian. His cook in the office is a Christian. You can preach better sermon with your life than with your lips. We should show example by how we live.”
Pastor Tunde Bakare, the General Overseer of Latter Rain Assembly who was running mate of Buhari during the 2011 presidential elections agrees with David West on this issue. “Yes, he is a devout Muslim. But he is far from being a religious fundamentalist. In my dealings with him, he never calls me on Saturdays because he understands, I will be preparing for church the following day. Issues of religion never cropped up between us and till tomorrow he still calls me.

Politics / Enugu APC Donated Largest Amount To Buhari -spokesman by maxism2: 8:56pm On Dec 27, 2014
The South East zonal spokesman of the All Progressives Congress, Osita Okechukwu, has commended members of the party in Enugu State “for being the highest donors to General Muhammadu Buhari’s Support Fund.”
Okechukwu, in a statement made available to journalists, explained that the fund, to which the “masses can donate only N100, has so far garnered N54m.”
Okechukwu told members of the APC in Enugu State that Buhari would “remain grateful for their contribution,” which, according to him, shows clearly that “the celestial bond between him (Buhari) and the masses and the middle class is Pan-Nigerian and that Nigerians are earnestly yearning for regime change.”
“I commend my people for being a critical chain in the Buhari-Bandwagon-Vehicle for Salvation, so that tomorrow nobody can marginalize Ndigbo,” Okechukwu added.
He noted that Buhari “has 60 percent chance of winning the 14th February, 2015 presidential election,” because, according to him, “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is the de facto campaign manager of General Muhammadu Buhari.”
According to Okechukwu, Buhari’s election became imperative because Jonathan failed to guarantee the welfare and security of Nigerian citizens.

“President Jonathan lacks neither the political will to stem corruption nor to fight Boko Haram, that is the GMB (General Muhammadu Buhari) appeal, even from unlikely quarters like South South and South East.

“It is my candid view that our dear president wasted golden opportunity by failing woefully to fulfill the promises he made four years ago.

“For instance on 13th May, 2010, he awarded a $23bn contract for the construction of three greenfield refineries; one to be located at Bayelsa, one for Lagos and one for Kogi – five years down the line the money had grown wings and the refineries dead on arrival,” Okechukwu said in the statement.

He noted that the failure to build the proposed refineries had resulted in the squandering of over N2trillion annually on importation of refined petroleum products, the devaluation of the naira, “gross unemployment,” collapse of the textile and ancillary industries, as well as a huge foreign debt profile.

The APC spokesman also accused the Jonathan administration of “posting of phantom economic growth in the midst of widespread poverty.”

Continuing, Okechukwu said, “My brothers and sisters, you must agree with me that if Mr. President, a young man with phd, had performed, automatically Nigerians from all shades of opinion will not today be clamouring to vote for an old GMB for president, that’s why President Jonathan is his (Buhari’s) campaign chief.”

Politics / Pres. Jonathan Wants You To Remember These 7 Things… As You Celebrate Christmas by maxism2: 3:41pm On Dec 25, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan in his message to the nation, has prayed that this year’s celebration of the birth of Christ will rekindle, strengthen and reaffirm our faith in the nation’s ability to overcome all challenges.

He further wants you to note the following:

1. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ who the Prophet Isaiah heralded as the Prince of Peace and Wonderful Counselor, I believe it is very appropriate that we all, Christians and non-Christians alike, reflect more deeply on the virtues and ideals which the Messiah espoused during his earthly mission.

2. As we celebrate his birth, I urge all Nigerians to offer special prayers for a greater manifestation of divine peace in our country and the vanquishing of all demons of hatred, divisiveness and disunity in our midst.

3. As we celebrate Christmas, let us also remember and offer special prayers for all of our countrymen, women and children who have suffered and continue to suffer untold hardship, deprivation and death at the hands of terrorists and insurgents.

4. Let us also continue to pray for our gallant soldiers and security agents who remain at the forefront of the national effort to overcome terrorism and violent extremism, even as the rest of the nation celebrates Christmas and the coming New Year.

5. In this season of goodwill, I urge all patriotic Nigerians to rededicate themselves to doing all within their powers to support the brave men and women of our armed forces in the ongoing war against terrorism, and also support the Federal Government’s efforts to provide more succour to the hapless victims of terrorist atrocities.

6. The Victims’ Support Fund which we have established to raise additional funds to assist our compatriots who have been adversely affected by continuing insecurity in parts of our country remains active. I call on all individuals and corporate organisations who have not yet done so, to donate more generously to the Fund which is being efficaciously deployed to ease the sufferings of victims of terrorist violence in the country.

7. Dear Compatriots, we are also celebrating this Christmas against the background of preparations for next year’s general elections. I seize this opportunity to reassure the nation that my administration will give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) all necessary support to ensure that it delivers very free, fair, credible and acceptable elections in 2015. I urge our political class to be law- abiding and place the greater interests of our nation above all personal or sectional interests in the countdown to the elections.

Politics / Bombs Fail To Detonate As Suicide Bomber Rams Into Military Check Point by maxism2: 8:07pm On Dec 24, 2014
A suicide bomber who rammed into a military check point in Bajoga, Gombe State Wednesday, failed to achieve his mission.

According to Major General Chris Olukolade, Director Defence Information, he said the bomber attempt to escape also failed as he was brought down by vigilant soldiers when he tried to flee after hitting a military Armoured Personnel Carrier with his IED laden Honda car. The explosives which failed to detonate have been evacuated and handed to the police.

Also in Kano, security forces have raided the terrorists’ hideout in Nasarawa Local Government Area leading to the arrest of bomb making experts who are already helping in the investigation into activities of bombers lately. Officers believe that the efforts will yield useful clues.

Troops deployed in all locations of the counter terrorism campaign have been directed to sustain the tempo of operations all through the period of seasonal celebrations and ensure that the intention of terrorists to attack civilian target while avoiding troops is duly frustrated.

Politics / How President Goodluck Jonathan Unwinds by maxism2: 7:57am On Dec 24, 2014
By DANIJI EMMANUEL
As president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has a loaded daily schedule. For the 57-year-old First Man, when he gets the free moments, most importantly, he spends time with his wife, mother, and children in the Villa. When he has few hours outside spending time with his family, he’s taken interest in a mix of squash, golf, and books. Golf is one hobby he took to a few years ago as against squash which he started playing over a decade. One of his squash-playing mates, HRH King A.J. Turner , a close adviser who has known Jonathan since their university days, told CNN sometime back, “Jonathan is a loyal friend who has competitive instincts — at least on the squash courts, a sport he plays ‘religiously’. He has beaten me a few times.”
