When Angela Ihegboro first saw her newborn daughter, she was “speechless.”
She’s a miracle baby,” the 35-year-old mother said yesterday. “But still, what on Earth happened here?”

What happened is that baby Nmachi is a blond, blue-eyed white baby born to two black Biafran immigrant parents at a London hospital.

“The first thing I said was, ‘What the flip?’ ” said the father, Ben Ihegboro. “We both just sat there after the birth staring at her for ages — not saying anything.”

He quickly sought to dispel any speculation.

“Of course she is mine. My wife is true to me,” the 44-year-old customer service adviser said. “Even if she hadn’t been, the baby still wouldn’t look like that.”

Genetics experts don’t believe in miracles, but they didn’t have any simple answers to the mystery of baby Nmachi. Instead, they offered three theories:


She’s the result of a gene mutation unique to her. If that is the case, Nmachi would pass the gene to her children — and they, too, would likely be white.
She’s the product of long-dormant white genes, passed on to her by her parents, that might have been carried by their predecessors for generations without surfacing until now.

A youth corps member from Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, Chukwuma Austin Dike, has converted to Islam in fulfillment of a vow he made.

The NYSC Batch C member, who is currently serving in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, had vowed to switch from Christianity to Islam should then General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) wins the March 28 presidential election.

Buhari won the polls by defeating then President Goodluck Jonathan and was sworn in on Friday, May 29, 2015 as President.

In fulfilment of his vow, Mr. Dike went to the Jibwisb Mosque in Gboko, Benue State, where his conversion to Islam was finalized.

Back in the Year 1929 the "riots" or the war, led by women in the provinces of Calabar and Owerri in southeastern contraption called Nigeria in November and December of 1929, became known as the "Aba Women's Riots of 1929" in British colonial history, or as the "Women's War" in Igbo history.


Thousands of Biafrans of Igbo extraction women organized a massive revolt against the policies imposed by British colonial administrators in southeastern Nigeria, touching off the most serious challenge to British rule in the history of the colony. The "Women's War" took months for the government to suppress and became a historic example of feminist and anti-colonial protest.

Today the Brave Enyimba City of Aba is hosting the world to show that indeed they are the children of those BRAVE GREAT WOMEN from Biafra land who fought against the colonial Masters (British) rules so many years ago. I am Proud of Aba because today is the day to show the world that they are Brave indeed.

World No Tobacco Day: 'Over 600, 000 persons die from indirect smoking yearly' - Expert

A Medical Consultant, Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, Dr Abdulrahman Jafar, on Saturday, May 29, urged government at all levels to intensify public awareness on the dangers of tobacco consumption.

Jafar made the call in an interview with the NAN in Lokoja on the sidelines of this year’s “World No Tobacco Day 2015 (WNTD).”

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is marked on May 31 of every year to raise awareness on health risks associated with tobacco and to advocate effective policies to reduce its consumption.

The expert stressed the need for the government at all levels to make stringent laws that would discourage the use of tobacco because of its health risks in the society.

“Governments should do the needful to decreasing the large number of people that are losing their lives on the use of tobacco yearly.

“There should be a legislation that will ban the use of tobacco, and heavy taxation on companies that produce tobacco products in Nigeria,” he advised.

Jafar noted that the World Health Organisation (WHO), set up WNTD to draw attention to the fact that over five million people died from direct consumption of tobacco every year.

He also added that over 600, 000 persons die from indirect smoking yearly.

He said the theme for this year WNTD is "Stop Illicit Trade of Tobacco Products” focusing on getting countries to work together to stop illicit trade of tobacco products.

Jafar defined tobacco as a leafy plant grown in hotter climates, which can be chewed, sniffed or smoked depending on the choice of the consumers.

"After absorption, the nicotine additive chemical present in the plant is released into the blood stream causing the heart rate to speed up, and raises the blood pressure.

"It makes one feel more energetic for some time, but the lasting effects are much more dangerous to health,” he said.


The consultant stated that tobacco users are at high risk of exposure to lower or upper respiratory-tract infections, noting that the effects might not be immediate but events that occur over time.

"Even if the person had stopped smoking there is tendency that such person can still develop these infections at the later part of his life.

"Anybody who starts smoking at the age of 15 or 16, the probability that such person would see his 40th birthday is very low.

"Smokers are at high risk of lung cancers, airway infections, such as obstructive airway diseases and trachea infections.

There are other medical conditions that are subtle in the body that smoking can aggravate, especially people who have hypertension, asthma, and other chronic terminal diseases

Jafar explained.

The medical practitioner, however, urged all youths to disengage from the habit of tobacco consumption, as it poses a great harm to their health and shorten of their precious lives.

The Incumbent Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Friday, May 29, 2015 during his inauguration which was abruptly halted by some angry youths, he pledged that he would be forfeiting half (50 percent) of his monthly income pending when the financial situation of the state improves.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, stated this in his inaugural speech after he was sworn in as Kaduna State Governor by Justice Tanimu Zailani, Chief Judge of the state.

He also disclosed that the slash in income would affect his Deputy Governor, Mr Barnanbas Bala.

El-Rufai further stated that his administration would “guarantee free and compulsory basic education for every child up to JS3, regardless of gender, religion or ethnicity.”

He mentioned that despite of the obstructions standing in the way of the state, his administration would also “focus on jobs, security, education, and healthcare.

“The fact is that today Kaduna State cannot meet its obligations without handouts from the federal government.

“We cannot comfortably pay salaries of our teachers and nurses and civil servants.

“And after struggling to pay salaries, we can do little else.

“We cannot fix the schools, help our farmers, repair our roads, or treat the sick. We have arrived at a dead end. The patient is sick, and it needs radical therapy,” Mallam Nasir El-Rufai stated.

The new Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has announced the appointment of Justice Daisy Okocha as the Chief Judge of the state.

Wike made the appointment after being sworn-in by the Chief Judge of Bayelsa state, Justice Kate.

Wike also directed that all the state owned courts which has been under lock be opened with immediate effect.

The Governor of Rivers state further announced the reinstatement of some Lecturers of the Rivers state University of Science and Technology who were relieved by the Amaechi-led administration.
