I have used the best human part that best illustrates my point. The tail illustration is just sarcasm. ‎

Communication? Tell me about hw dogs communicate with their tails so ill see where to answer you from.

For the record, boerboel tails are cut halfway, and not completely docked. This still gives room for communication. So I didn't see the need to talk about communication

ok... i heard AKC and thank God google is just a click away.... grin

nfluence of kennel clubs[edit]
Critics point out that kennel clubs with breed standards that do not make allowance for uncropped or undocked dogs put pressure on owners and breeders to continue the practice. Although the American Kennel Club (AKC) says that it has no rules that require docking or that make undocked animals ineligible for the show ring,[6] standards for many breeds put undocked animals at a disadvantage for the conformation show ring. The American breed standard for boxers, for example, recommends that an undocked tail be "severely penalized."[7]

The AKC position is that ear cropping and tail docking are "acceptable practices integral to defining and preserving breed character and/or enhancing good health,"[8] even though the practice is currently opposed by the American Veterinary Medical Association.[9]

@ Arcbay....Maybe i just dropped from the sky....Will check again and revert which part of the planet i dropped from!

Abeg which govern dog body dey for SA again? i need help on this? maybe i should drag RSPCA into our nairaland matter! grin

Because i don dey hear SA too much on dog matters! and for record purpose can i get a certified certificate from a dog breeder in SA where the it states they or some (Dogs) were originally from SA without import?

The fact that most people get there dogs from SA doesn't and i mean doesn't mean they originated from SA. The importation of dogs into SA is more easier and less stress thats why you see more breeders pass through the port.

I took out time with a breeder...Revolution kernel to visit breeders in 4 countries and they showed proof of different certification of there breed. Just the other day i watched on CNN about a breeder that has the biggest Pitbul in the states and off we went. lo and behold i had no other option than to book for a litter after showing us the original parent certifications on both dogs! Called Dark Dynasty

That same dogs litter for now that i know of is spread around the world and not even one in Africa yet! but it much more easy to get that dog into SA than Nigeria without stress( cost of shipping, doc vet etc).

For now i rest my case till we get a certified governing dog body in Nigeria and we hope "Sai Buhari Government" will help!

Culled from "gbl01 at 8:15am:-Now re-read my post, do it slowly this time.the clock on your brain might sync properly then.

But just incase...i don copy paste again.

The RSPCA is opposed to the cosmetic tail docking of dogs because the procedure is unnecessary and compromises the welfare of dogs. In 2004, tail docking for non-therapeutic reasons was banned across Australia. Since then it has been illegal to dock dogs’ tails unless there is a veterinary medical reason for the operation. Only qualified veterinarians are permitted to carry out the surgery, whereas before the ban, tail docking could be carried out by anyone classified as an ‘experienced breeder.’ All previously docked breeds can now compete at dog shows with full tails, so there is absolutely no reason for any dog's tail to be docked unless they were born prior to 2004 or have damaged their tail in some way.

Then.... this the POINT to rest this...

The few remaining advocates of tail docking give a range of unconvincing explanations to defend their views. For instance, they say that some heavy coated breeds need to have their tails docked for hygiene reasons (even though many undocked breeds have thick coats and regular care is all that is necessary to maintain good hygiene). Another explanation is that docking prevents tail damage in hunting dogs. But most docked puppies are kept as family pets and are never used for hunting and research has shown that docking does not reduce tail injury in the general dog population. Furthermore, many breeds of hunting dogs do not have docked tails, and the length of the tail in docked breeds varies according to the breed standard. The excuses put forward to support tail docking are plainly unfounded. There is simply no excuse for reviving this painful tradition.

Disadvantages are plentiful.

To start, dogs use tails for communication. In a hectic moment, a dog can easily get its point through with it's tail, to express fear, happiness, or annoyance. If you'll notice, there are very few breeds with naturally short tails. There is a purpose to this. Dogs need the tails to communicate with eachother. Stubby tails are harder to "read" so a dog not paying attention to one trying to show that it is scared will probably cause the scared one to act in agression. It's a fact that dogs with stubby tails are much more prone to agressive behaviour! Stubby tialed dogs are also more likely to develop fearful personalities as they learn they its harder for them to communicate with other dogs. Guard dogs were actually docked to encourage this behaviour so they keep everyone away from the property, actually being scared of everyone approaching.

Why is the RSPCA opposed to the tail docking of dogs?

Tail docking is the term given to the surgical removal of puppies’ tails for cosmetic purposes. The procedure was usually performed at 2-5 days of age; the tail is cut off using a pair of scissors or caused to drop off by occluding the blood supply using a tight rubber band. There are over 70 breeds of dog that traditionally have had their tails cut off a few days after birth. The reason some breeds and not others are docked is simply because of the fashion set for that particular breed. Each breed has an arbitrary standard for where the tail should be cut off.

Unfortunately, there are some veterinarians and breeders who still advocate tail docking for cosmetic purposes.

Tail docking is painful

Advocates of tail docking claim that it does not cause pain or discomfort, as the nervous system of puppies is not fully developed. This is not the case; the basic nervous system of a dog is fully developed at birth. Evidence indicates that puppies have similar sensitivity to pain as adult dogs. Docking a puppy's tail involves cutting through muscles, tendons, up to seven pairs of highly sensitive nerves and severing bone and cartilage connections. Tail docking is usually carried out without any anaesthesia or analgesia (pain relief). Puppies give repeated intense shrieking vocalisations the moment the tail is cut off and during stitching of the wound, indicating that they experience substantial pain. Inflammation and damage to the tissues also cause ongoing pain while the wound heals. There is also the risk of infection or other complications associated with this unnecessary surgery.

Tail docking can also cause unnecessary and avoidable long term chronic pain and distress to the dog. For example, when a chronic neuroma forms at the amputation site. Neuromas are often very painful.

Tails are major communication tools

The dog’s tail serves a critically important role in canine social behaviour. The tail is a major communication tool between dogs. The tail’s position and movement can indicate friendliness, a desire to play, submission or a warning signal, among many other messages. Thus the tail also serves as a protective mechanism for dogs, part of the various strategies employed by dogs to communicate with one another; establish boundaries and to avert aggressive encounters.

The tail also communicates important messages to humans during human-dog interactions. The action of the tail can help humans to interpret a dog’s body language and to determine what sort of interaction is appropriate for a particular dog. Thus the tail plays an important role in public health and safety.
Removing the tail impairs a dog’s ability to communicate properly, leaving them highly vulnerable to being misunderstood by other dogs and humans and placing them at a distinct social disadvantage. Therefore tails must not be removed for any reason other than for therapeutic purposes.
Pro-docking claims

Is it legal in other countries?

Cosmetic tail docking has also been banned in a number of countries including Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, Germany and Denmark. Several other European countries including Cyprus, Greece, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Austria have also ratified a European Convention that prohibits the cosmetic docking of tails. In the United Kingdom tail docking can only be carried out by a registered veterinary surgeon. The practice is opposed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons which describes it as an 'unacceptable mutilation'.

Why do some dogs still have docked tails?

You may still see adult dogs with docked tails, as the docking may have been performed before the ban was introduced. But you should never buy a puppy with a docked tail. If you get a dog from a breeder, make sure that they do not dock tails. If you suspect that tail docking is still taking place, please phone your state or territory RSPCA. There are also a few breeds, such as the Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, or the Australian Shepherd (which is actually an American breed) which carry a genetic mutation that means some individuals are born with short (stumpy) tails.

Other surgical modification of companion animals – ear cropping of dogs

Ear cropping involves the surgical removal of a portion of both of ears and is traditionally performed on specific breeds such as boxers, great danes, doberman pinschers or schnauzers. The practice was common in dogs bred for guarding, fighting, and hunting small animals and the historical reasons for ear cropping are similar to those for tail docking (owners said they wanted to reduce the incidence of ear injuries and make it harder for their dogs to be caught by the ears). Although few dogs are used for such purposes now, some breed fanciers argue that cropped ears are part of the historical breed standard. Others, including RSPCA Australia regard the practice of ear cropping as an unnecessary and detrimental to the welfare of the animals concerned. In many countries including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, the practice is banned under prevention of cruelty to animals’ legislation.

I am just devastated. I can't hold back tears.
He passed away peacefully. But he was in pains for some days now.
He was such an intelligent dog and very gentle. I will miss him greatly.
Next step for me now is how to take care of his body. I would have loved cremation if it is offered in Nigeria. Please I need advice from those that have been through this situation.
Thank you all for your support.

So Sorry Poseidon about the loss. So sorry.

Dear Rottweiler owner and Breeders,

Its so wrong to dock Rottweiler with assumption it will make them more aggressive or make them look more stern looking!!

I'st wrong and so wrong and i find more of this in Nigeria!! Yes! Nigeria!! For christ sake this should be stop and i think Rottweiler lovers show shun this!!

This practise has been banned and i think any Rottweiler from 2010 with docked tail is exempted from this practise...The new generation Rottweiler don't deserve this!!

Hope we can have this in our country as well!

I do have one(Docked tail) and he his 8 years old and he was imported with legal certificate like that. but now its illegal to docked their tails

Pls experienced dog owners and vet docs in the house, I need your advice.
My dog Adolf is alsatian, 14 yrs old (but looks much younger). It just suddenly became lame on Friday. Could only get up with my assistance. It got worse by Saturday with almost complete loss of appetite (he only ate some chicken I boiled for him). Saturday he refused the chicken. So I tried beef and he ate it. But since Sunday to date it's complete loss of appetite. He won't eat anything even boiled fresh fish. He has only been drinking water. I tried adding glucose to the water but he won't touch it. He wants only plain water.
And he can't get up at all, even with my assistance.
I got a vet coming daily to treat but no improvement. I suspected hip dysplasia. Vet feels there is an infection in addition. He has been giving daily gentamicin injection and b-complex inj since Sunday, but no improvement.
When it started Friday, he was urinating very frequently and indiscriminately probably from drinking a lot of water. I gave aspirin oral Saturday to ease pain and added omega 3 fish oil sunday. Vet started treatment Sunday and gave diclofenac inj in addition to antibiotic and b complex.
Since monday urination reduced drastically. And he did not urinate Monday. I suspect the diclofenac has adversely affected his kidney. Vet has stopped it. He got only one dose of 75mg. Dog weighs about 40kg.
Now he vomits (not frequently) after drinking water; probably because he can't urinate easily.
My dog has been a great companion. He has lived a good life. Has hardly been sick. I would be very happy if there is anything I can do to help him. It really pains me to see him suffer.
I miss walking him every morning. He always came to wake me up for early morning walk. He always looked forward to it.

Boil Titus fish (due to aroma) and add with half boiled egg... appetite loss and do stop any form of antibiotic and b complex for a few days(2 days). then force omega 3 fish oil down his throat with Pet tabs and watch for 1 day.

Remember to put water close by and use blanket to cover him up at night.

Give me an update by this time tomorrow. Old age crippling in but doesn't have to react this way...too much drug down his system!.

Nice dog,
When you say A+ champion bloodline does it mean their pedigree names or their bloodline as in sickness free like we have SS prone to sickness in human?

This means that both of the dogs in their backround was shown in some kind of competition and obtained their Championship.
