Arsene Wenger claimed he would have committed suicide had Davide Zappacosta’s late shot sealed three points for Chelsea on during their Premier League clash on Wednesday night.



The Gunners were impressive in a thrilling encounter as Hector Bellerin scored a late goal to earn them a point, and although Chelsea had a very late chance to steal a win with Zappacosta’s effort.

The Blues defender failed to find the back of the net and Arsenal boss Wenger controversially claimed after the game he would have killed himself had the ball gone in.
“I would have committed suicide,” Wenger told reporters after the final whistle when asked what he would have done if that effort went in.
“It was a great football game, we have shown great mental resources, I knew the last 20 minutes would be tough.”
Jack Wilshere gave Arsenal the lead with his first Premier League goal in over two years, but the Blues hit back with goals from Eden Hazard and Marcos Alonso, before Bellerin restored parity late on.
The draw leaves Arsenal rooted in sixth place in the Premier League, outside the Champions League standings.



But while Wenger is annoyed to see his side down the table, he believes that the Gunners’ play merits better fortunes.
“It’s very frustrating. We have to look at ourselves as well,” he added.
“Our performances have been top quality but we have not had the results we could have had. We have not been gifted luck.”
The manager singled out goalscorer Wilshere for praise after opening the scoring with a fine finish.
“He’s at the level now that not many people expected him to be. He has not played for England since 2016, that means everyone gave up on him,” he said.

DIEGO COSTA QUICKLY FINDS THE NET IN FIRST APPEARANCE SINCE LEAVING CHELSEA

Diego Costa scored for Atletico Madrid just five minutes into his return as the club cruised to a 4-0 win at Lleida Esportiu in the Spanish Copa Del Rey on Wednesday.

Costa, who rejoined from Chelsea in September but could not play until the transfer window opened this month, came on as a 64th-minute substitute and swept home Atletico’s third goal in the 69th minute in the first leg of a last 16 tie.

The Spain international started the move that led to his goal, driving forward before moving the ball wide, allowing Juanfran to whip in a low cross that Costa clipped past Lleida keeper David Oliveros.

Costa appeared to have injured himself stretching to score the goal, but carried on and finished the game.

“Costa’s return has filled us with enthusiasm,” said Atletico coach Diego Simeone. “He brings speed, strength and physicality, which is what we expected of him.”

Two goals in four first half minutes from Diego Godin and Fernando Torres set Atletico up for the comfortable win away to third tier Lleida, with Godin heading home a drilled free-kick after 33 minutes and Torres doubling the lead soon after, just about staying onside to tap home Kevin Gameiro’s low cross.

Costa’s fellow sub Antoine Griezmann completed the rout in the final seconds, his deflected free-kick sailing past Oliveros giving Simeone’s side a seemingly unassailable lead ahead of Tuesday’s second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid.

Barcelona and Real Madrid play their respective first leg clashes with Celta Vigo and second-tier Numancia on Wednesday, with Barca coach Ernesto Valverde set to rest Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, who both returned late from holidays in South America, as well as captain Andres Iniesta.
