Football’s world-governing body FIFA on Wednesday announced that it had confirmed seven candidates to run in its election for a new president on February 26.

The candidates proposed are;
1. Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein
2. Musa Bility, Jerome Champagne
3. Gianni Infantino
4. Michel Platini
5. Sheikh Salman bin
6. Ebrahim Al Khalifa
7. Tokyo Sexwale.

There was no mention of former Trinidad and Tobago footballer David Nakhid, who announced last week that he had submitted his candidacy.

FIFA said in a press release that, with the exception of UEFA chief Michel Platini, the candidature dossiers would be processed by its electoral committee.

Platini is currently suspended from all football-related activities for 90 days as part of a clampdown on corruption and fraud at the heart of the FIFA operation.

“Should such a ban be lifted or expire before the FIFA presidential election, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee would decide, depending on the respective exact point in time, on how to proceed with the candidature concerned,” the statement read.

FIFA said that the six other candidate dossiers had now been handed over by the Electoral Committee to the investigatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee to carry out integrity checks.

The chamber will “deliver comprehensive documentation on each candidate, but it will not give any recommendation as to whether or not a candidate may run for the FIFA presidency.”

The next step will see the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee review the results of the integrity checks before formally declaring which candidates can stand for the FIFA presidency.

The election next February comes as FIFA is engulfed in a massive corruption probe that has resulted in 90-day bans on Platini and the organisation’s long-standing president Sepp Blatter who is standing down.

Those suspensions run out on January 5.

Dakuku Peterside, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State in the April election has condemned in very strong terms, the denigration of the judiciary by governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, his agents and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Peterside who spoke in Abuja said the vilification of an important arm of government like the judiciary by desperate politicians portend grave danger for Nigeria and her budding democracy.

He described the disparagement and on-going war against the judiciary by Wike and the PDP as a dangerous example that must be checked quickly because of its calamitous consequences.

“The judiciary is a sacred and respected institution. Therefore, any person or persons who openly criticise judges and their rulings obviously have a sinister motive.

“However, it is gratifying to note that people are beginning to fully appreciate the character and temperament of the people we engaged during the last general elections in Rivers State. They are obviously finding it difficult to live under due process and the rule of law because they are used to impunity and violence, the two evils that were taken to new heights under the last government.

“If service is really the reason for being in politics, then it is tragic that these politicians are conducting themselves in such a spiteful manner. Nobody is above the law and when people openly and brazenly challenge institutions of state like the judiciary, it sends the wrong signal.

“The APC in Rivers State and its candidates took their losses at the various election petitions tribunals with equanimity, knowing full well that a window of opportunity still exists. Even when we felt very dissatisfied with the verdicts, we still did not abuse the judiciary or judges who handled our cases because we know the consequences of such defamatory actions.

“Wike and Rivers PDP are still living in the past but they should be reminded that Nigeria of today is a survivor because she defeated impunity and all the lawlessness of the last administration”.

The amount of govt money that commercial banks have with them will reduce or be equal to zero. This means that the banks will have a lesser volume of deposits to do business with possibly having a negative impact on their earnings.


This will further force commercial banks to go into full time retail banking, come up with innovative products and services to woo private customers to deposit their money with them.


It is also aimed at mopping up corrupt leakage of govt money in the hands of Commercial banks.
