PoliticsAmaechi Appointed As APC Presidential Campaign Director by McDonalds2014(op): 10:58pm On Dec 18, 2014
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has named Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State as the Director-General of its Presidential Campaign Organization, which will drive the party’s efforts to win the 2015 presidential election.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said the announcement followed the hugely successful convention where its presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, was democratically elected, and the subsequent successful choice of his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.
It said Gov. Amaechi’s outstanding reputation as a man of courage, principle, strength of character, decency and love for the country, as well as his administrative prowess and organizational skills combined to fetch him perhaps the most important task in the quest for positive change in Nigeria.
APC thanked Nigerians for their support and prayers toward the success of the convention, the emergence of Gen. Buhari as the APC presidential candidate and the choice of Prof. Osinbajo as his running mate.
The party said it believed it had lived to its promise to Nigerians by ensuring that the choice of its presidential running mate was made within the context of the best democratic ideals, considering the enormously-positive reactions from the general public to the choice of Prof. Osinbajo.
“With a presidential candidate that has rekindled the hopes of the citizenry and revived their belief in democratic ideals, we believe we must also choose a running mate that will complement the sterling qualities of the presidential candidate. We must confess that the choice was a tough one, considering the array of eminently-qualified and outstanding candidates that we had to choose from.
“Yes, we were spoilt for choice but, in the end, we picked as running mate a man whose pedigree, nationally, sub-regionally, regionally and globally, attests to the fact that our party, the APC, is a repository of high quality leadership materials, and that our country, Nigeria, has no shortage of the very best human resources,” it said.
APC said whether in the academic, legal or ecclesial world, Prof. Osinbajo stands much taller than his physical frame, and serves as a good accompaniment to our presidential candidate, himself a man of such rare sterling qualities that have stood the test of time, qualities that are now so sorely lacking in our country’s leadership.
“Our presidential running mate is an award-winning professor of law, a legal luminary, a gentleman, a much-sought-after public speaker, a tested administrator, an author and a man of great ecclesiastical standing.
“Educated in Nigeria and the UK, Prof. Osinbajo is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, who has served in many organizations and professional bodies in Nigeria, West Africa, Africa and the United Nations. He has authored or edited over a dozen publications, has taught and practised law at the high levels, and has served on the Editorial Boards of learned publications and non-legal publications, in addition to publishing many articles in learned journals.
“Now that we have presented Nigerians with the best possible choices for the exalted positions of President and Vice President, we expect that citizens, who have been yearning for quality leadership, will use their voting power to put Nigeria firmly on the path of greatness. A country seeking to be among the greats in the comity of nations cannot afford to have a mediocre leadership,” the party said.

PoliticsFuel Scarcity Looms As Oil Workers Threaten Strike Action From Tomorrow by McDonalds2014(op): 3:32pm On Dec 14, 2014
It appears another episode of petroleum scarcity is about to hit Nigerians as members of thePetroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association [PENGASSAN] and their counterparts in the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers [NUPENG], are set to begin a nationwide strike starting fromtomorrowMonday December 15th.
According to Premium Times, the oil workers are heading for a strike action due to unresolved labor issues with the federal government, underfunding of the Petroleum Training Institute in Delta state as well as the yet to be passed Petroleum Industry Bill PIB.
"We (the oil workers) have sufficient reasons, based on information available to us, to believe that the law makers are not prepared to pass the law, even as the state of the country’s petroleum industry has continued to deteriorate as a result of the absence of a regulatory and legal framework for the industry,” an official of the petroleum workers body said.
The oil workers are said to also be aggrieved over the decision of the management of Total Nigeria to sack the PENGASSAN zonal Secretary in Port Harcourt as well as thelack of promotion for workers of the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF)

EducationPics: Protest By Post-graduate Students Of UNN Over Hike In Tuition Fees by McDonalds2014(op): 10:46am On Dec 13, 2014
Post-graduate students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, barricaded the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ben Ozumba, in protest against hike in their tuition fees, describing
the increase from N69,000 to N145,000 as outrageous.
The placard-carrying protesters, numbering over 200, marched round the school and barricaded the VC’s office.
The students say “To us, the increment is outrageous. We are not against any increment, but it should be reasonable. It is not fair to increase the fees for a session of nine months from N69,000 to N145,000. Where do they expect us to get that kind of money? We will continue this protest until the university reduces it. I do not think it is a crime for one to further his education in UNN.”
The Dean of Post-Graduate School, Professor A. Ubachukwu, addressed the students, saying that:
“Government does not give any allocation for postgraduate school as it is assumed that post-graduate students are adult and can pay cost for their education. I use my personal money at times to run the PG school. I have been talking with some of your leaders on this issue for some time now and we compared notes with other universities before the increment on PG school fees was made.”

PoliticsVP Slot: APC Considers Buhari’s List Of Three by McDonalds2014(op): 7:08am On Dec 13, 2014
The All Progressives Congress is considering the list of three nominees by its presidential candidate for the 2015 elections, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) The party is to select one of the three names as the running mate of the general.
A high ranking member of the party, who confided inSaturday PUNCHin Abuja on Friday, said the presidential candidate has been under pressure by power blocks within the party long before he emerged.
The party member pleaded for anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media on the matter.
He said the candidate and the party were both aware of the enormity of the task ahead and were determined not to leave anything to chance.
The source said the candidate had already given notice to the party that he would submit three names of party loyalists he would like to work with. The source said, “In choosing the three names, he will consider three things: Religious balancing, votes or what we call electoral value and he will also consider the personality of the individual.
“The governors elected on APC platform are insisting that it must come from among them, but Buhari had told them that he agrees but that the names he would submit to the party would contain at least the name of one of them but that the party would ultimately decide. “Those in the South-East want one of their own. Their argument is that doing so will strengthen the party in the region.”
The source noted that the allure of block votes from the South-West is tilting the scales in favour of the geo-political zone which has been a strong base of opposition politics.
This throws up the possibility of a candidate coming from the Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu’s political camp.
A member of the Buhari camp said the General would have loved to work with Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, but “a muslim/ muslim ticket will be a hard sell considering the situation in the country today.”
However, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo appears the most likely choice because of his untainted public record and intellectual depth. Apart from being a member of Tinubu’s inner circle, Osinbajo is a Pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God and a close associate of the church’s General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. Many Christians are likely to support this choice. Hailing from Ikene, the hometown of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo , is also seen as an added advantage. The three geo-political zones in the South namely: South-South, South-East and South-West were also said to be showing interest in the vice-presidential slot.
But that the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the party would meet and take a decision on the matter.
He dismissed comments on the social media that the party had picked a running mate.
“We haven’t even met,” Mohammed said.
The party also denied a report that it had picked the Rivers States Governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, as Buhari’s running mate.
Mohammed told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Friday that picking a vice-presidential candidate would require wide consultation, but said the party would announce the person next week.
“What you are reading now is the handiwork of mischief makers. No one had been picked as Buhari’s running mate but we will pick and announce next week,” he said.

Politics2015: It’s Buhari Vs Jonathan by McDonalds2014(op): 5:51am On Dec 12, 2014
It’s now official. Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.) is the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate for the February 2015 election.
He defeated four other APC aspirants –Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rochas Okorocha and Sam Nda-Isaiah – to clinch the party’s ticket at a national convention/primary that started on Wednesday in Lagos and ended about 7pm on Thursday.
His victory sets him yet again as the number one challenger to President Goodluck Jonathan, who on Wednesday was formally handed the Peoples Democratic Party flag for the 2015 election.
Buhari, who was born on December 17, 1942, was Jonathan’s main opponent in the 2011 presidential poll. He first had a shot at the Presidency in 2003 against Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2007, he ran against Umaru Yar’Adua(now late).
His emergence for the fourth time as a presidential candidate was welcomed by the APC national leadership, delegates and aspirants. One of the defeated aspirants, Okorocha, described him after the official announcement of the results, as “the man capable of chasing away Jonathan in 2015.”
Buhari was handed a return certificate by the Chairman, Third National Convention and Presidential Primary of the APC, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, having scored 3, 430 votes to beat Kwankwaso, who is the Kano State governor, to a distant second with 974votes.
Surprisingly, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, came third. He scored 954 votes.
Okorocha polled 624 votes to come fourth while the Publisher,Leadershipnewspapers, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, came fifth with 10 votes.
There were 16 voided votes in all.
Buhari, in his acceptance speech, said the opposition was poised to sack Jonathan from Aso Rock next year.
He said Nigerians were tired of 16 years of broken promises, hardship, corruption, ineptitude, impunity and lack of vision by the PDP and its leaders.
Buhari said history beckoned on Nigerians to make the necessary change by voting out the PDP. He commended his rivals for fighting a gallant fight.
Explaining that he was not the best among the contestants, Buhari said providence had thrusted on the leadership of the APC, the task of giving Nigeria a new lease of life.
He said, “My common cause is the love I have for our nation. I want Christians, Muslims, the old and the young, the rich and the poor to come together and let us advance together the cause of this country.
“Preserving the nation’s future is a great obligation to all of us. This is what the government in power should saddle itself with, otherwise, they have no reason being in government.
“The PDP government is leading us to destruction. Nigeria should be the leader of Africa. Our people sleep in and pay for darkness. Over 200 of our girls were abducted and government has been unable to do anything about it.
“Several of our youths were trampled to death because they went in search of employment. Are we happy to continue to live like this? My answer is “No! No! No!”
The Daura, Katsina State- born ex-soldier said if elected in 2015, he would evolve a five–point agenda that would engender constitutional governance, improved security, poverty eradication through job creation and end ethnic , tribal and religious bigotry.
An indication that Buhari was likely to emerge the winner of the long-drawn contest showed at the venue of the rally when most of the governors of the party subtly rallied support for him before the start of the primary.
All the governors of South-West directed the delegates from their states to vote for Buhari.
Delegates from each state comprised serving and past senators, serving and past House of Representatives members, past and serving governors, past and serving deputy governors, state cabinet members and ministers.
Buhari, who turns 72 years this month, was warmly received at the stands of the South-West states .
The shouts of ‘Sai Baba!’ rent the air as he embarked on a walk to the stands.
When he made his speech, a thunderous ovation from the VIP stand greeted his welcome address and manifesto.
The party’s leaders who were at the VIP stand included the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; a former acting National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande; a former National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Bernabas Gemade; another former National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Audu Ogbeh; a former National Chairman of the defunct, All Peoples Party, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu; among others.
Odigie-Oyegun described the convention and primary as historic and unprecedented in the annals of the country.
While conceding defeat, Okorocha said Buhari’s emergence was an act of God, adding that all the aspirants were winners.
He said, “For every sunrise, there must be a sunset, this responsibility has fallen on a new shoulder. I say that it is God that has made this day possible and I believe this is for a purpose.
“While I congratulate Gen. Buhari, permit me to appreciate Alhaji Abubakar, a dogged fighter and a detribalised Nigerian and one that knows when to fight and when to stop fighting.Let me also comment the passion of my brother Governor Kwankwaso for his zeal in making this competition a reality.”
Abubakar also congratulated Buhari on his victory. He said he would honour the agreement by the aspirants to support the winner of the primary.
The former Vice-President promised to work with Buhari to ensure the victory of the APC in the general elections next year.
He said, “Last night when I stood here, I said history is going to be made at this venue. I said this convention would be political evolution; that this party would renew democracy in this country and since last night you have witnessed what I describe as the most credible election to be ever conducted by any political party in this country.
“On behalf of my humble self and my supporters that voted for me, I congratulate the winner of this very historic election .I therefore congratulate Muhammadu Buhari. We have pledged that whosoever wins this election, all of us will work as a family.
“Let us use this opportunity to thank the leadership of our party. Bola Tinubu has been my contemporary in the fight to restore democracy and sustain it and depeen democracy in this country. I want to pay tribute to his contribution.
“Buhari has been an embodiment of nation-building for decades and he has continued to offer himself to this country. He will march this party to victory in less than two months.”
Oshiomhole congratulated Buhari and commended the four other presidential aspirants for “a gallant fight.” He urged them to support the winner in order to emerge victorious in the presidential election.
The governor said, “First, let me congratulate the candidate of our party, a highly disciplined, tested and trusted leader, Maj. Gen. Buhari, for emerging through this refined, transparent and credible process of delegate election.
“I also wish to congratulate the delegates for their tolerance, patience, maturity and commitment towards ensuring a successful convention which has produced such a strong candidate for our party.”
The governor noted in a statement that the outcome of the primary showed that APC members were committed to being agents of change in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Oshiomhole said that with the emergence of Buhari, Nigeria would get true and selfless leadership needed to drive the much-desired change at the centre.
PDP welcomes Buhari to presidential race
The PDP welcomed the emergence of Buhari as the APC candidate.
The party, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh , said that on each of three previous occasions, Buhari failed to articulate a vision of the future that was acceptable to Nigerians.
It said, “On each occasion his brand of politics was rejected across Nigeria. Apart from changing to a dinner suit, Buhari, has not changed the tired ideas and provocative utterances that Nigerians rejected in previous elections.
“We hope that this time round, Buhari will conduct a campaign that is issue based and devoid of ethno-religious sentiments.”
The party added that it believed that Buhari was convinced that the PDP remained the only truly national political party in Nigeria .
He said that despite distractions, Jonathan had a genuine record of accomplishments on which to run and and defeat Buhari.

Nairaland GeneralNigeria Winning Corruption War Under Jonathan –presidency by McDonalds2014(op): 5:28am On Dec 08, 2014
The Presidency on Sunday said contrary to what many might believe, Nigeria was winning the war on corruption under President Goodluck Jonathan’s watch.
It said although it might not be immediately known to many, the fight against corruption had been taken several notches higher since Jonathan came on board.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, made this known in a statement in Abuja.
“There is no doubt that Nigeria is winning the war on corruption. It may not be immediately apparent to those who do not understand the dynamics of applying creative techniques in upturning an age-old habit that has cost this country a lot in terms of financial resources; but to those like the officials in Transparency International knowledgeable in the nuances of fighting corruption, a lot of grounds have been covered,” Okupe said.
He said the nation’s movement from its 144th position on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index last year to 136th position this year was an indication that a lot had been achieved by this administration in the anti-corruption war.
He recalled that when the organisation gave its verdict last year and Nigerians held the view that the Federal Government was not doing enough to fight corruption, the administration had assured the citizens that the Jonathan administration remained focused in its determination to completely eradicate corruption in public service.
He said the latest TI rating was a proof that Jonathan’s effort in the fight against corruption was yielding positive results.
He said, “There is no doubt that since President Jonathan came on board as President of this country, the fight against corruption has been taken several notches higher. Unlike any previous administration in the country‘s history, the present administration has instituted institutional reforms aimed at giving fillip to the anti-corruption war.
“One major area this fight has been visible is the agricultural sector where the administration’s carefully articulated and executed Agricultural Transformation Agenda ended 40 years of corruption in the distribution of fertilizers to farmers.
“The same thing applies to the reforms in ports where we have successfully plugged many loopholes which some corrupt officials had exploited to delay genuine business transactions and harm the Nigerian economy.
“The old corrupt system of government direct procurement and distribution of fertiliser as well as the operations in the various ports and government agencies contributed in no small measure to the negative rating of Nigeria by the Transparency International and other global watchdogs.
“Also, the determination of President Jonathan to tackle corruption head on has seen the government take some other far reaching steps like the cleaning up of the import waiver system, which before his coming, was fraught with corruption, nepotism, arbitrariness and other irregularities.
“As a result of this, billions of Naira were lost to the economy as the real business people failed to benefit.
“While it was important for suspects involved in corruption cases to be tried, and if found guilty, sent to jail. What is more important is for the development of mechanisms, the institution of structures and the enactment of policies that would plug loopholes and foster transparency, such that the propensity for corruption is made more difficult and eliminated completely.”
This, he said, was what the Jonathan administration had been doing and that was the template adopted by countries such as Denmark and New Zealand, which are at the top of the TI index.
Like New Zealand, Okupe said the Jonathan administration was deploying Information and Communications Technology to tackle corruption head on.
He said key reforms instituted by the administration, like the electronic payment system and the IPPS system had helped reduced corruption in the system.

Nairaland GeneralConfusion In Enugu As Corpse Of Jim Nwobodo’s Son Disappears by McDonalds2014(op): 9:39am On Dec 06, 2014
There was pandemonium yesterday at Amechi, Nkanu-West Local Government Area of Enugu State as the community could not come to terms with former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo over where his, son,Jim, Ifeanyi Nwobodo Jnr would be buried.
It was a show of shame at Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu State as the burial ceremony of Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, the late son of former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo turned awry as Nigerians from all walks of life waited in vain for the arrival of the corpse.
Jim Nwobodo’s son ,Jim, Ifeanyi Nwobodo Jnr
News had filtered in early in the morning that the corpse of the deceased disappeared from the morgue.
Saturday Vanguard recalls that Dr. Ifeanyi Nwobodo
Jnr., who had on November 16, 2014 died of cancer, was to be buried yesterday as planned by the family.
A source told our Saturday Vanguard that his corpse was snatched away following a crisis among members of the clan and the former governor.
Trouble had started when the former governor chose a venue outside the family compound for the burial of the deceased, a decision which was stoutly opposed by other members of the family.
A family source said Jim decided to bury Ifeanyi outside the family house, on the notion that he (Ifeanyi) lost all his rights as a son by dying before his father.
However, other members of the family, as well as Awkunanaw youths, who were not happy with such decision, insisted that he would not buried elsewhere. Following the deadlock, Saturday Vanguard gathered that some yet-to-be identified members of the community made straight to the morgue and took the corpse away.
For several hours, some past and serving Governors, including the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, waited endlessly amidst the frustration. After a long fruitless wait, Ekweremadu, and other dignitaries stormed out of the venue.
As the confusion persisted, the Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province of the Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma, waded into the matter and held a stormy meeting with all the warring parties.
At the end of the meeting, which lasted for several hours, the Archbishop volunteered to allow the family bury the deceased at the St. Mathew’s Anglican Church Amechi Awkunanaw.
Saturday Vanguard recalls that the late Ifeanyi served as a commissioner during the second tenure of former governor of Enugu state, Chimaroke Nnamani. Ifeanyi Nwobodo left behind three girls and one boy.
Dignitaries in attendance at the burial included; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, National Chairman, United Progressives Party,UPP,Chief Chekwas Okorie, National Chairman,All Progressives Grand Alliance,APGA,Victor Umeh, former minister of information, Chief Nnai Nwodo,Senator Annie Okonkowo

PoliticsAPC Picks Presidential Candidate In Lagos Dec 10 by McDonalds2014(op): 6:10am On Dec 04, 2014
THE All Progressives Congress has named Lagos as the venue of its December 10 presidential primary.
Eight thousand delegates are expected to participate in the convention, scheduled to hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
The APC four other presidential aspirants –former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, and Leadership Newspaper publisher, Sam Nda-Isaiah – had jointly asked for a venue outside Lagos, said to be favoured by Buhari and a former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu.
Atiku and the three others wrote the APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, on Nov 27, “advising” the party chairman to retain Abuja as the convention venue.
But the APC convention committee, led by ex-Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, ignored the subtle protest by the presidential aspirants and on Wednesday announced the choice of Lagos as replacement for Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
Fayemi explained that his committee had been able to convince all the aspirants on the suitability of the new venue while noting their concerns about logistics.
The four aspirants had, in the protest letter, argued that Abuja was more centrally located and easily accessible to delegates from all over the nation.
In the letter, the aspirants observed that the proposed choice of Lagos as possible venue for the presidential primaries was not convenient.
The letter partly read, “We the under-listed presidential aspirants of the APC, having noted the clash of date of 10th December for APC and PDP National Convention/Presidential Primaries wish to advise as follows:
“That Abuja as centre remains the best, convenient and most accepted to all.
“That, our party has paid for the Eagle Square for the 7th and 8th December for presidential primaries, which now is dated for Federal House/Senate primaries.
“That, the presidential primaries be retained for the 7th and 8th as scheduled, while the National Assembly primaries since we have nothing to harvest from PDP president primaries as their candidate is already known.
“That, the proposed choice of Lagos as a possible venue for the presidential primaries is not convenient for all.
“We therefore advise that our party reverts to Abuja as the venue.”
It was learnt that as of Tuesday, it was agreed in principle that Benin, the Edo State capital, be chosen since the national leadership of the party had argued strongly in favour of retaining the December 10 date.
A source in the party, who pleaded anonymity because he was not permitted to comment on the issue, said, “The aspirants are afraid that Lagos, being the home of a strong supporter of Buhari will give the person he is supporting an edge over others because the issue of accommodation and other logistics will be easier for them (Buhari’s camp) to address.”
But another source said the fears being expressed by aspirants about the venue were not unfounded.
The source said, “There is news making the rounds that a certain leader of the party has booked most of the decent hotels in Lagos.
“The leader in question is working assiduously in favour of a particular aspirant, as such, having delegates within his reach at the last minute could alter earlier projections.”
According to the source, Benin was earlier considered because “the heartbeat of the nation” would serve the dual role of marketing the party as a truly national party and not a metamorphosis of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria as well as selling the party to the electorate in the South-South.
It was, however, gathered that the party leadership picked Lagos because Benin lacked the facilities and security capability to take care of the huge crowd expected at the convention.
Fayemi told journalists at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday that there was nothing sinister about the choice of Lagos.
According to him, the party, especially his committee, is more concerned about the process than the product.
He said, “For us, it is not who emerges at the end of the day. They are all competent. They all have agenda and they all will implement the manifesto of our party. It is how we get there.
“We have not taken any decision without the input of all the presidential aspirants, l can assure you of that. We did not arrive at Lagos accidentally; we arrived at Lagos with the full input of all our presidential aspirants.
“Those concerns were raised about the distance, for example for somebody coming from Yobe as delegate or Maiduguru, those are practical issues and we would have been surprised if the aspirants didn’t raise such issues.”
In another interview in Abuja, Fayemi said that the initial plan of the committee and the party was to hold the event in Abuja but that the APC changed gear because the ruling PDP was also holding its convention almost at the same time. He said it would be difficult for the two dominant parties to be holding events of such magnitude at the same time.
Besides, he also said that the Eagle Square, which he said his party would have used, was also going to be used by the PDP.
The PDP convention has been fixed for December 10 and 11 in Abuja.
Fayemi said, “We originally wanted to hold our national convention in Abuja because naturally Abuja is the place to hold an event of this nature. This is where we have always held national party conventions.
“However we had identified a date to hold the party convention in Abuja and due to some exigencies we had to change that date. It also happened that the new date we chose now coincides with the date the PDP also chose for their national convention.
“Understandably the Eagle Square that we wanted to book had been booked for the day.”
“We then looked at other options. We looked at Port Harcourt, Benin and Lagos. We felt that all of the factors that are considered to be critical to success of our convention only Lagos has successfully met those criteria.
“These are comprehensive security measures, full coverage by the media, capacity to accommodate 10, 000 delegates.
“There is no other city in Nigeria that can do that outside Abuja and Lagos. Benin that was also a very high ranking choice also did not succeed on that point because the accommodation in Benin would not meet up with the need of our delegates, aspirants and other leaders that will be present.”
On the alleged fears of other presidential aspirants that Lagos could be used to crown unnamed aspirants, he said the allegation was not true.
The former governor said, “Everything we are doing is in the open and is transparent. In fact, all aspirants have representatives in the committee and they were part of all the discussions that transpired before we arrived at Lagos.
“So if anyone wants to suggest that this is going to be coronation to anyone, that is news to me. We won’t use Lagos to coronate anyone. I have the greatest respect for every aspirant but I am not the type that can be manipulated or intimidated into working to a pre-conceived answer, not even by the chairman of the party or any leader of the party.”
Meanwhile, the Atiku campaign office on Wednesday welcomed the decision to hold the APC convention in Lagos.
In a statement signed by his media office, the former Vice-President said he wholeheartedly welcomed the choice of Lagos as the venue for the presidential primaries of the APC.
It described Lagos as the former Vice- President’s home, considering the fact that he spent several years of his public service career there.
The statement described Atiku as “a Lagosian.”
It read, “I’m not any less Lagosian than anyone is. I have a house in Lagos and a part of my large family lives in Lagos. I visit Lagos regularly, so I’m not a stranger to the cosmopolitan city and what it represents as the melting pot of Nigeria.”
The former Vice-President also congratulated the Government and the people of Lagos State on this unique opportunity offered them by the APC to excel and showcase “the spirit of Lagos.”
Also, the Lagos APC welcomed the decision of the party’s National Convention Committee to hold the party’s presidential primary in the state.
The Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said Lagos was the best location for the exercise given the state’s strategic position.
He said, “It is a welcome development. Lagos has the funds, the logistics and all the necessary things to conduct the exercise. Delegates are also assured of adequate security as the violence which marred the conduct of the House of Assembly primary in Yaba can never recur.
“We also promise a level-playing field during the exercise as it will be transparent.”

PoliticsSoyinka Is Playing The Ostrich, Says Presidency by McDonalds2014(op): 10:29pm On Dec 02, 2014
The Presidency on Tuesday said Prof. Wole Soyinka was only playing the ostrich by accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of being worse than King Nebuchadnezzar.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said this in a text message sent to our correspondent.
Okupe said it was saddening that the Nobel Laureate also failed to reprimand Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, who he described as the “national champion of impunity and official reckless.”
While saying Soyinka was wrong in his judgment of the Jonathan administration, the presidential aide described the present administration as the most liberal in the history of the nation.
He said, “Our eminent Prof. also sadly plays the ostrich as he failed to reprimand Governor Amaechi who is the national champion of impunity and official recklessness.
“The administration of President Goodluck Jonathan proves itself as the most liberal, keeping faith with adherence to rule of law and tolerance.”
