A former military Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, declared his bid for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress. Buhari, who addressed a crowd of supporters and members of the party in Abuja, said the level of corruption in Nigeria today was worse than any time in its history. While promising to ensure the protection of the lives and property of Nigerians, he promised to ensure the creation of jobs for the youths as well as revive failing industries. He said he empathised with Nigerians who, he said, were suffering deprivation on a daily basis. According to him, millions of Nigerians are grappling with extreme poverty and barely eking out a living. He said, “Nearly all are in fear for their lives or safety for themselves and their families due to insurgency by an ungodly group called Boko Haram, by marauding murderers in towns and villages, by armed robbers on the highways, by kidnappers who have put many communities to fright and sometimes to flight.” The aspirant explained that it remained everyone’s duty to resolve and help the national effort to overcome these challenges. He expressed gratitude to security operatives for their sacrifices in confronting the security challenges facing the nation. He also saluted the courage of Nigerians for their “perseverance and resolve in the face of the oppressive PDP government.” Buhari then went on to announce that, “I humbly wish to present myself before you, before all Nigerians and before God seeking to be elected as the APC Presidential candidate.” The former military ruler explained that members of the opposition came to the realisation that the only way to relieve Nigerians of the burden of maladministration imposed on them by the PDP was to come together as one. “We have tried to ensure that all processes in our party are transparent and credible. These structures will lead to free and fair polls. There is no point in holding elections if they are not free and fair,” he said. While accusing the PDP of unwholesome practices, Buhari said, “Interference in the form of rigging which the PDP government has been practising since 2003 is the worse form of injustice as it denies people their rights to express their opinions whether they like it or not, injustice cannot endure. “Since 1999, the PDP has presided over our country’s decline. Nigeria in my experience has never been so divided, so polarised by an unthinking government hellbent on ruling and stealing forever. “We in APC have resolved to stop the PDP in its tracks and rescue Nigeria from the stranglehold of the PDP. The last 16 years of the PDP government has witnessed a decline in all critical sectors of Nigeria.” He reiterated that apart from the Boko Haram insurgency, there was general insecurity in the land. This, he said, was at a time when government was engaged in the manipulation of figures to announce “fantastic growth rates.” Buhari said, “The economy continues to deteriorate while government continues to announce fantastic growth figures but manufacturing is down, agriculture is down, commerce is down simply because you sell oil and steal part of the money. “That does not entitle you to cook figures and announce phantom economic growth when all the major indices namely, employment, manufacturing, farming, trading are demonstrably on the decline.” He promised to revive the nation’s ailing industries and give the nation a new sense of direction by creating jobs through the pursuit of economic policies that would reduce poverty and redistribute the nation’s wealth among its people. Earlier, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Rotimi Amaechi, had said the 14 governors on the party’s platform had resolved to support whoever emerged as the party’s flag bearer. He said, “The governors in the APC are determined to work together for this change in all our meetings we insist that whoever emerges as the party candidate will be supported. “You know our dear Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is one of the aspirants for the ticket of the APC right? And you know he is a material they don’t have in the other party. If they say they have a material like him they should show us somebody who is anti-corruption like Buhari. “APC provides an alternative for the country. We are tested and we will never disappoint Nigerians.” He used the occasion to take a swipe at the PDP-led Federal Government for claiming credit for Nigeria’s Ebola containment success story. Also, one time National Chairman of the PDP and second Republic Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh, debunked claims that Buhari was a religious bigot. Ogbeh said, “I am a Christian so is Adams Oshiomhole, so is John Oyegun, so is Rochas Okorocha. Those calling him a fanatic are no more Christians than we are. We don’t want to call them Pharisees and Sadduces, claiming they are more holy, more catholic than the pope. Meanwhile, the PDP said it was pleased to welcome Buhari to the 2015 presidential contest. While congratulating and wishing him well on his ambition, the party in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, said it noted that Buhari’s criticism of Jonathan on economy was faulty. He said that the nation was rated number 48 in the world, while the foreign reserve stood at $3.6bn and foreign debt stood at $36bn. Metuh said, “It is incontrovertible that in the last 15 years of the PDP leadership, especially the last three years of dynamic and purposeful administration provided by President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s economy has become the largest in Africa and the 26th largest in the world. Similarly, our foreign reserve is now over $39bn, and our foreign debt reduced to less than $7bn from $36bn. “Besides, Gen. Buhari also told supporters that Nigeria’s agricultural sector has gone down under the PDP, a statement which also does not reflect the reality on the ground.” He added that the country’s food import had reduced from N1.1tn in 2010 to N684bn.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/buhari-declares-says-jonathan-govt-most-corrupt/ |

Heavily armed policemen on Tuesday frustrated moves by the BringBackOurGirls group to march to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to “engage” with President Goodluck Jonathan, on the efforts of the security agencies to rescue the 219 Chibok schoolgirls, who have been in Boko Haram captivity since April 14. The protesters were stopped from accessing the Villa gate and their activism was restricted to Yakubu Gowon Crescent, Asokoro, Abuja, where they were addressed by an all-female government delegation led by the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Zainab Maina. Others in the delegation included the Minister of Environment, Mrs. Lawrencia Laraba-Mallam; Minister of Land and Housing, Mrs Akon Eyakenyi, and Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe. Motorists and pedestrians, who wanted to use the Gowon Crescent access road to the Villa, were turned back by stern-looking security personnel, who barricaded the road with their vehicles. Maina, while addressing the group, said the Federal Government was doing everything possible to ensure the safe release of the schoolgirls. She said, “We are here to meet you because Mr. President is very busy today and he cannot come out. Government is trying all it could to make sure that these girls are brought back. They are our daughters. We are all mothers; as much as it hurts you, it hurts us even the fathers. You know as well as we do some of you are very much aware of the efforts that the government has been making to make sure that these girls, our daughters, are brought back alive.” The BBOG Coordinator and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwezili, accused the ministers of colluding with the Police to prevent the protesters from meeting with Jonathan. She said, “You have joined the Police who have prevented us from meeting our President and Commander- in- Chief; the Commissioner of Police did indicate we should wait and then we will be able to proceed to have the meeting. “We had written the President as part of our global call to action concerning the rescue of the Chibok girls that we would be visiting him exactly on the day that marks six months of the Chibok girls abduction.” The group handed over a petition titled,”Questions for Mr. President” to the ministers for delivery to the FG. The Christian Association of Nigeria has challenged the founder of Household of God, Pastor Chris Okotie to manage his home and keep to biblical principles of one man, one wife. The association was reacting to the demand by Okotie that its President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, should resign over the alleged involvement of his aircraft in the controversial $9.3m smuggled into South Africa by two Nigerians and an Israeli. Okotie, had in a statement by Okotie on his church’s Facebook page, said, “Considering the collateral damage Pastor Ayo’s close relationship with the President has done to the Christian community, it is fit and proper for the Pastor to resign immediately as CAN President to salvage what remains of the battered image of the association. “This is without prejudice to the on-going investigation on the matter. Denials of his culpability by the Federal Government, CAN officials and his own recent defense, does nothing to reduce the moral burden this whole saga places on his shoulders. As the titular leader of Christians in Nigeria, there’s now a serious crisis of confidence on his leadership and he ought to respond to it by resigning from his exalted position.” But the Director of National Issues in CAN, Mr. Sunny Oibe, toldSUNDAY PUNCHthat Okotie was looking for popularity through Oritsejafor. He said, “Is Chris Okotie a Christian? How many wives has he? He should go and sort out himself. Even the government has exonerated Pastor Ayo of all the allegations. So, who is Okotie? Well, it is laughable if Chris Okotie should demand that Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor should resign as President of CAN. “Chris Okotie should remove the log in his eyes before he begins to see a peck in somebody’s eyes. Pastor Ayo had a soaring integrity before he was elected the President of CAN. Who elected Chris Okotie to become the spokesperson of Christians in Nigeria? “CAN will not like to join issues with Okotie because doing that will amount to making him popular. He is looking for popularity which he doesn’t have through Pastor Ayo and he is not going to get it.” Source: www.punchng.com/news/okotie-lacks-moral-right-to-question-oritsejafor-can/ |

Minna – A professor of business education at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Mr Mahmood Aliyu, has declared his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). The presidential aspirant made the declaration at a press conference on Saturday in Minna. Aliyu said his decision to vie for the presidency was informed by the agitation for the emergence of new crop of leaders “to fight the malaise in the country. “There has been agitation for the emergence of new crop of leaders by well-meaning Nigerians in order to take this country out of problems.’’ The aspirant said APC was the only party that would tackle the current security challenges bedevilling the country. He added that “an APC government will tackle the security issue with all the seriousness it requires and deserves.’’ Aliyu, however, called on the national leadership of the APC to review the N27 million fee for picking the party’s presidential nomination form. He said “our party should have a rethink about the fee for presidential nomination forms, so that ordinary Nigerians can afford it. “Ordinary people who have something to offer get scared away by the amount; even the PDP fee is not up to that of our party.’’ He described as embarrassing, reports that he was being sponsored by the ruling PDP to run for president, arguing that he had always been in the opposition since he joined politics in 1993. The presidential aspirant was born on Nov. 20, 1951 in Niger and he is an indigene of Offa in Kwara. (NAN) Source: www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/don-joins-apc-presidential-race/ |

Brazil says it has identified a suspected Ebola case who arrived in the country on Thursday. The patient, Souleymane Bah from Guinea, presented himself after coming down with a fever at a public health centre in the town of Cascavel in the southern state of Parana. He has been flown to Rio de Janeiro to the National Institute of Infectology. Doctors say he no longer has a fever and blood test results are expected on Saturday. Health Minister Arthur Chioro said the situation was under control and “all health protocols and procedures were applied efficiently and with great success.” Guinea is one of the three West African countries most affected by Ebola. Bah’s symptoms appeared on the 20th day after he left Guinea – within the 21-day incubation period. But since his arrival, he has not shown any symptoms and his fever has not returned. Bah arrived in Brazil as a refugee and was granted leave to remain until 2015 by immigration police. Sixty-four people, who came into contact with Bah, mostly in the health centre in Parana, are also being monitored for symptoms of Ebola, although the Health Ministry says they are considered low risk. Concerns have been expressed about what route Bah took to get to Brazil. The authorities in Argentina are concerned he may have come to South America through one of the country’s airports or ports. The Brazilian Health Ministry says it has contacted the World Health Organisation about these concerns. Source: www.punchng.com/news/brazil-records-first-ebola-suspect-quarantines-guinean/ |
