Hi @Fynestboi I'm suggesting this thread for front Page. https://www.nairaland.com/1530352/how-nigeria-transform-educational-sector It's a thread on how Nigeria can transform the educational sector for good. Thanks. |
FEW POLICIES AND CHANGES THAT WILL TRANSFORM THE NIGERIAN EDUCATION SECTOR. Privatization A public-private partnership with local and international educational institutions and organizations will translate to improved standard across every level of education, efficiency, transparency, accountability and compliance with international standards among other things. Arguably, this will lead to an increase in the actual cost of education incurred by parents/guardians or self-sponsored students. This however will be counteracted by other policies. Introduction of individual / family education trust fund For every member of the labour force that plans to start a family, has children or intends to further his or her education in the future, an option should be given/can be made mandatory to deposit a percentage of the income tax in an education trust fund account managed by the person(s) whereby this funds are only accessible for educational purposes. This will make more funds available to such individuals in the future. And if made mandatory especially as an admission requirement , this will also encourage more people to pay their taxes if they wish to give their wards an education. This will also ensure less corruption in the utilization of government funds accrued to education at state levels. Disbursement of majority of the Tertiary education trust fund TETF as scholarships/bursaries The TETF is generated from corporate tax paid and is considerably the largest source of education funding in Nigeria. The constant corruption in the country has affected every aspect of the country and I don't believe the TETF is left out. This can be curbed by paying the majority of the TETF to students in form of scholarships/bursaries payable only to the individual's education trust fund account and usable only for educational purposes. This will ensure that the funds are in the end paid directly to the institutions managed by private enterprises ensuring proper utilization and results. Thorough curriculum review and update Presently, the curriculum used in Nigeria is very much out-dated.It is a curriculum tailored to suit the needs of our colonial masters who's only intention was to produce civil servants. The rest of the world is far ahead with specialization being the order of the day.The diversity of our curriculum is much more disadvantageous than it seems. It results in lack of highly specialized expertise as well as under performance of undergraduate and graduates. The curriculum needs to be updated to meet up with international standards. Some key things that should be done:- -reduction in course load.to realize specialization, students need to take less borrowed courses and concentrate on courses in their field.Courses offered in Nigeria Is >9 whereas in USA,CANADA, UK and others it is 5-7 giving students more time for practical and personal study and development. -introduction of summer semesters in all tertiary institutions to allow students retake courses failed in the previous session instead of carry-overs which prolongs the stay of such students unduly.students can also take extra credit or non-credit courses for self development or to reduce subsequent coursework. -updating of course contents in all fields.Use of obsolete course contents puts us at a disadvantage in the global community. -Re-orientation and update of academic staff: younger and up-to-date lecturers should be trained and employed and if older staff must remain, they must adapt and be willing to conform to industry standards with professionalism..Privatization will ensure that this be done as all staff will now be under the private enterprises. All public servants at all levels must send his/her ward to public schools** This policy will show the governments total commitment towards transforming the sector.Although I believe with the implementation of policies above, such won't be necessary since their will be less struggle to send wards to private-owned or foreign schools. HERE ARE SOME ADVANTAGES OF THE AFOREMENTIONED POLICIES -Higher standard of education will be achieved through privatization as we all know the private sector is much more credible. -Public-Private partnership will lead to greater credibility and accountability of our institutions in the global communities thereby fostering partnerships in various forms like exchange programs, transfer of technology, training, research assistance and this will also lead to more funding from organizations as well as individuals . -Higher demand and respect for Nigerian expertise. The quality of graduates produced will lead to higher demand and respect for graduates from Nigeria. -More investors will be attracted to Nigeria as an outsourcing destination due to low cost of labour hence creating more jobs and boosting development nationwide(just as it did in India ) -Higher rate of international students coming to nigeria for the high quality of education. -International recognition among many other things will be achieved. I hope our government will be able to use such policies and more to transform the education sector in this great nation of ours for the better. We have been given an opportunity to do rightly what many great nations have done wrong.God bless Nigeria. And I hope this gets to front Page and even further!.. **not mandatory |

I agree with you on the poor state of education in Nigeria. But regarding the comments like 'end time tinz' and '1st to comment ',I don't believe it is the related to education in any way,it's in a completely different facet of life which is the social aspect. Education is not the only influential aspect of life, people have different personalities reflected in their social life.Such comments come from jesters, jokers and even serious people for the fun of it. As for the issue of entertainment overtaking education,it's an individual thing.I don't watch football when it's not staring me right in the face, you will not catch me in wizkid's concert for any reason. Every nation, community or society is faced with the influential power of entertainment, sports and so on.And as you know, there are also people who go through school for the sole purpose of being a performer. I'm not against your views but simply giving a little more perspective. I also believe that the education sector does need transformation in this country.I have actually written a little article pointing out some steps to achieve the transformation we need.pls forgive me,I don't mean to derail the thread. i have attached a file outlining few transformation policies and the advantages. You can check this threadhttps://www.nairaland.com/1530352/how-nigeria-transform-educational-sector |
So sad...there are bloggers in USA making more than the first person on this list...see huffpost, mashable and techcrunch... This list is just not right... |
Tying to take steps that India took without putting the right things in place. The transport system in the country is poor and it very inconvenient. That is why cars are a necessity. You will establish factories for who to work in? With lack of skilled labor, Even new cars from industrial countries like japan have issues...you now expect Nigerians to use their money to buy made in Nigeria so that chassis go leave engine for highway abi!!! The factories will be full of expats and will be running on generator abii... The advisers to the govt are not very smart individuals though. |
I think this will indirectly create jobs. If you've ever watched pursuit of happiness starring will Smith,he went for a non-paying internship which was highly competitive. In this case, the companies can create space for the interns since it doesn't cost them anything,if the graduates prove to be useful and beneficial they can be retained. |
Davo93: So what exactly is your point sir?. |
We all need to realize that we aren't meant to understand everything, that's why God is God and man is man.We just need to believe in God regardless of what's happening. Hence even as we discuss in forums like this, let's reduce our foolishness to the bare minimum. The day we ask God why and he gives us the entire answer.that is the day you will enter into limbo. |
Davo93: Your suggestion is a nice vibrant one but so useless to be applied to the current system on ground in our nation Nigeria.Well like I said...mentality..we all know the fuel subsidy protest was a joke and most protests where rallies or concerts and people were having fun and making money.why do you think just getting the degree(paper) is more important than the quality of education. Even in the US not everyone goes to college and you are almost unable to tell the difference between a high school and college grad at first sight because of the quality even at junior level.back when education was quality that's when my grandmother of 80yrs went to primary school(standard 6) and up till now she can read novels, magazines and inspirational books.that's what quality can do. Nigeria wants to setup automobile factories..who will work their? Graduates? Goto china and you will find that people working in those factories and exporting companies are highschool grads and may have diploma in business English for those who do sales. A lot of things cannot be done with certain mentality.everything can't be handed down to you by govt...forget corruption now..for 150milion people nigeria is not oil rich in anyway. We are broke.so you can't expect them to do everything for you. |
The solution to the problems of tertiary education in this country is public-private partnership. Tertiary education is too cheap in Nigeria. And we all know cheap isn't quality. If the universities are run by private enterprises at higher cost we would get better quality even though it's at higher cost.Alot of people are paying less than what they paid in secondary school now that they are in the university. Alot of people in universities can afford to pay 10 times their current fees but for their government -centric mentality. Americans know how much they have saved for years to send their wards to college.here people that don't even pay tax will be complaining about everything. There are so many policies that can be put in place to make tertiary education top notch in this country.maybe I should start a new thread to discuss this. |
mhozzis: EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE TALKING TRAFFIC but no one has stated how it really works.traffic Is the most important factor for site monitization..and more so if its regular and if the users/visitors are potential adclickers and product buyers...it may be worth just ''joy of accomplishment'' to you but it means $$$ to online ad companies like google ads, adfly and others....they are the ones who will pay you. |
mj: Google is responsible for selling Sponsored Links on OLX. You buy Sponsored Links by buying Google Adwords and targeting OLX. If you don’t have an account, you can create one at Google Adwords. If you already have an account, use the instructions below to target your ads on OLX.exactly....people be wondering anyhow...if you wander enough you would see ''sponsored''=''money'' and when next anyone Is unclear How a site make money..just conclude its google...you r most probably correct.. |
olx Is making money through sponsored links, these are the last 3 links on every ad listing page.go to the botton and you would see info on How to use google ad word to feature your link on olx ad pages.its simple...the more countries they cover the more traffic and the higher the potential of ad word links directed to their website. that Is their monetization technique and its pretty obvious....traffic=money |
brabus: There's a non-disclosure agreement on this project and as we all know information received under a confidentiality agreement cannot be disclosed to a third party that is not a party to the agreement.ok sir.thanks anyway. |
Hi anigold, great work you are doing here. I'm not a forex trader and I really don't have plans to be one.I just want to ask some honest questions and get honest answers from you. Since I don't understand any of your terminologies, I just want to ask a few questions. -do you trade daily and how many hours daily if so.if not what is your interval or however best to put it. -how much profit do you make on a daily basis on average, seeing that the risk of loss you state is always low(hope I'm correct) . I would appreciate if you can reply to my email mckorode@gmail.com. So we can communicate easily. I'm not going to bug you with training request or tips.its for a different purpose. Hope you can help. Thanks |
Citation : best university in South Africa, university of cape Town.tuition for their citizens is between 400-900k nigerian naira. Good, quality education doesn't happen magically. |
Although I haven't read all posts thoroughly, I believe university(not necessarily tertiary ) education is too cheap in Nigeria.coincidentally I discussed this with my dad today and he agreed that it's too cheap(btw, I'm not OBO).immediately we finished talking,BBC news anchor said in his opening statement for a program that tertiary education is expensive everywhere. People think Nigeria is rich.the sad truth is we are Oil producing but we aren't oil rich.arabian countries have more oil and less population so we are broke.forget corruption. Tertiary education isn't cheap anywhere so Nigerians are just selfish. |
Hi Mr.Brabus, just want to know how much you have spent so far on this magnificent piece and how much more you think will be spent till completion. Thanks. |
