Pandemonium broke out in Warri, the commercial hub of Delta State yesterday as the ailing Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, WRPC, was engulfed by fire. Huge ball of smoke billowed into the air as the refinery went up in flames. This development heightened fears about imminent scarcity of petroleum products, especially in the areas serviced by WRPC in the Southern and Northern parts of the country. The fire outbreak led to an abrupt closure of the refining plant. It was learnt that fire erupted at the nation’s pioneer crude oil refining plant at about 9:45a.m., a development which forced oil workers and dealers at the neighbouring Warri Loading Depot operated by the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company, PPMC, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to scamper for safety. The managements of WRPC and PPMC had to advice their employees to vacate the troubled scenes. The jittery management of WRPC was apparently compelled by the prevailing circumstance to recall some safety personnel from vacation to avoid colossal threat to lives and property. Residents and oil workers within the vicinity of the plant were caught by fear of likelihood of an explosion resulting from the inferno. Panic-stricken residents dispatched distress messages to loved ones within and outside the city as fire ravaged the refining complex. Specifically, oil workers in the Area Office of PPMC and Warri Depot also controlled by PPMC, led by Mr. William Enoh as well as the oil dealers attached to the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, and the major oil operators in the depot, scampered in different directions to avoid being affected by the danger. Although the fire was eventually put out by a combined team of fire fighters attached to NNPC, the moribund Anglo-Dutch energy giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, and Delta State Government, it has done collateral damage to some major units of the plant before the intervention. Consequently, it was learnt that fire had damaged some multi-million dollars equipment in the plant before the arrival of the interventionist team of fire fighters. Security agents, especially the troops of the Joint Task Force, JTF, in the Niger Delta, later cordoned-off the refinery and depot and prevented visitors, including journalists, from accessing the facility. Our correspondent reported that tension gripped residents of the city and its adjoining Effurun, the headquarters of Uvwie Local Government Area of the state, as information about the latest fate of WRPC filtered into the city. Eyewitness account told our correspondent that the fire erupted from a unit popularly referred to as “Area 1” in the refining complex, which produces kerosene, diesel and other by-products of petroleum products, especially light and heavy Naphta and heavy gas oil. Reliable sources in WRPC told our correspondent that trouble started when a leakage on the Vacuum Unit Pump which supplies heavy gas oil, a major feedstock for the Fluid Catalystic Cracking, FCC, unit failed in the course of operation. One of the sources said: “The hot petroleum products from the three major units Reforming and Topping as well as FCC units ignited fire as soon as unit pump control failed. “The three major units were abruptly brought down and by implication; the entire plant had also been shut down immediately. We can’t officially determine the cause of the fire immediately until the system is cool and dry. “The Department of Inspection and Testing in WRPC is expected to carry out investigation about the cause of the fire in the next few days and brief the management on their findings and also make appropriate recommendations to the authorities on the way forward,” added the source, who craved anonymity. It will be recalled that the plant resumed operations lately after prolonged closure due to major faults at some of its strategic units. The maintenance of the damaged facilities was reported to have gulped million of dollars. The Managing Director of WRPC, Mr. Paul Obelley, could not be reached for reaction to the latest fate of the plant yesterday. But an official of public affairs department of the ailing plant, who confirmed the report in an interview with National Mirror, added that Obelley had ordered investigation into the incident. WRPC, the first government- owned refinery, was inaugurated in 1978 to process 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day. However, it was redesigned in 1987 to process 125,000 barrels of crude oil per day. http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/fuel-scarcity-imminent-as-fire-razes-warri-refinery/ |

There are Beliebers, and then there’s Toby Sheldon. Sheldon, a 33-year-old songwriter in Los Angeles, told a British tabloid that he has paid nearly $100,000 to look like Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber Is Ripped – All His Workout Secrets! Sheldon’s obsession with looking like the 19-year-old pop star began in 2008, according to the Daily Mail. “Once Justin shot to fame, his face was everywhere and I all I kept thinking when I saw his picture was, “I want to look like him,’” he said. So Sheldon, who had already spent $8,000 on hair transplants, visited a plastic surgeon, armed with a photo of Bieber. “It took three transplants and a total of $21,000 to accurately lower my hair line, close off my temples and grow back my bang,” he said. Face and lip fillers, Botox and Aquamid injections in his forehead and temple followed. Then, in 2012, he spent nearly $5,000 on surgery to lift his upper eyelids. “But it took going to eight different surgeons before anyone would agree to operate on me as everyone thought I was crazy to be obsessing over such a tiny detail,” he said. Photos: Justin Bieber Through the Years Most recently, Sheldon underwent a $30,000, three-part smile surgery. “When I first sought out to look like Justin I only paid attention to specific aspects of his boyish look like his hair and the structure of his face,” he said. “By using Justin’s charming baby face as my inspiration, I’ve been able to restructure my entire look to maintain a much more youthful appearance through plastic surgery.” But Sheldon said his transformation is incomplete. He still plans to have a nose job and jaw reduction, despite his being happy with the results so far. “Between our similar hairstyles, baby-faced smile and overall youthful appearance, I finally look like Justin Bieber,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier about it.” http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2013/10/man-pays-100000-to-look-like-justin-bieber/

The ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party has come under criticism for scoring the Federal Government high on the state of the nation's roads. Newsmen who visited the Facebook page of the PDP yesterday observed that the ruling party posted the picture of a well lit section of Kubwa Highway in the Federal Capital Territory on its wall, while living in a fools' paradise about the motorability of other Nigerian roads. The caption on the photograph read, “Can you guess? Don’t go too far. This is Kubwa Highway in the FCT, once a single lane, notorious for its traffic gridlock. Who said PDP no dey work?” However, the self-admiration of the party has attracted angry reactions, as some Nigerians faulted its claims. The PDP Facebook followers who disagreed with the claim said the party should be ashamed for rolling out the drums over a single road, out of the many other roads in the country which needed attention. In the comments, Nigerians lamented that many federal roads were dotted with potholes, many of which, they said, had started graduating into craters. A particular Facebook fan of the party, King Babalola, posted that PDP should stop deceiving its followers on social media. “The Peoples Democratic Party is really doing well. Just as you put the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway in good shape in 14 years? Papa Deceiving Pikin political party. “Why should the Federal Government, which the PDP produced, be jubilating over the repair of what is not up to one per cent of the roads in Nigeria in 14 years? The PDP should be reminded that I lost my mother and sister to poor medical service being rendered to the citizenry.” Another fan of the party, Sani Ibrahim, accused PDP of being out of touch with the reality in various parts of the country and urged it to bury its head in shame for putting such information on the social media space. “So, you (PDP) are proud to display a single road in one area council in Abuja, out of all the 774 local government areas in the country? Aren’t you ashamed? Much is expected of the Federal Government, which has a good concentration of our economic potential.” Some Nigerians who appeared embittered with PDP's claim argued that the it had failed the citizenry, not only in terms of provision of motorable roads but also in terms of dearth of critical infrastructure necessary for national development. http://news.naij.com/49854.html |
BEIJING (Reuters) - China has confirmed a new case of the H7N9 bird flu, state media said, the country's first report since August of human infection with a virus that has so far afflicted 135 people. A 35-year-old man in Shaoxing in China's eastern province of Zhejiang has been hospitalized with the virus and is in critical condition, the official Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday. "Liu, a company employee from Shaoxing county, was admitted to a township hospital on October 8," the agency said. China's National Health and Family Planning Commission said 45 people had died from the virus, which was first detected in humans early this year. Zhejiang has recorded the highest number of H7N9 infections anywhere in China. While there have been only a handful of H7N9 infections during the summer months after a surge in April, flu experts warn that the threat posed by the virus has not passed. The first scientific analysis of probable transfer of the new flu strain between humans, published in the British Medical Journal in August, gave the strongest proof yet that it can jump between people, and so potentially cause a human pandemic. Another study published in August identified several other H7 flu viruses circulating in birds that "may pose threats beyond the current outbreak". http://news.yahoo.com/china-reports-first-case-h7n9-bird-flu-since-100903803.html |

Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, on Tuesday accused his opponent in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Willie Obiano, of lacking the confidence needed for the race. Ngige said in a post on Facebook that Obiano had been hiding behind Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and APGA National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh. In the piece titled ‘Questions for my dear opponent,’ Ngige said Obiano’s refusal to wear campaign materials bearing his own face showed that the candidate was “unsure of himself.” He said that he (Ngige) appeared to be running for the November 16, 2013 election against Obiano and his ‘godfathers.’ The full text reads: “Questions for my dear opponent. Why can’t he wear his own face on his clothes? Why can’t Obi wear the candidate’s face? Does Obi hate him this much? Now my fellow candidate has decided to put on the cap of his second god father. Who am I really contesting with? Am I contesting with Peter Obi or Victor Umeh? It appears Mr. Willie is unsure of himself. He wears Obi’s clothes today and wears Umeh’s cap tomorrow. “He is not even confident enough to wear his own face. Nobody hears him say anything. He is just like a boy led by the hand by his boss Obi and his big uncle Umeh. “Folks, please tell him that Anambra governorship is not for boys. Cluelessness is not a quality that is needed in an Anambra governor. An Anambra governor does not need to be led like a slowpoke by his boss and big uncle. Tufiakwa!” http://www.osundefender.org/?p=126914 |
D’banj and Don Jazzy, no doubt, both dominated the music scene for nine years before the cookies crumbled and they went their separate ways. Today, they have formed individual group, D’banj-DB Records, Don Jazzy-Marvin Record, but something still seems to be connecting the two together. In an interview recently, D’banj confessed that he really missed Don Jazzy whom he had spent the better part of his career with. Hear him “If I say I don’t miss Don Jazzy, I am lying. I have spent the better part of my career with him. I was married to him in a way (laughs). So I miss everything about Mo’Hits: the family, the movement, and the vibe of being in the studio with him. I miss the jokes and the arguments, but I have since keyed into the notion that nothing can stop a moving train. Nevertheless we can always do music together. The track, ‘Top of the World’ was produced by a Grammy Award Winner. The songs ‘Finally’ and ‘Don’t Tell Me Nonsense’ was produced by my producer while ‘Oliver Twist’ was produced by Don Jazzy. So, why won’t I have him on my 10 years anniversary album?” Does Don Jazzy feel this way too? Really, Don Jazzy, who now operates Marvin Records, has not opened up on their issue since their separation, he has remained focused with his business, shunning out hit songs to remain permanently on top of the game. We are waiting if he would indeed accept to feature in D’banj’s 10th anniversary album. http://www.osundefender.org/?p=126869

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Wednesday launched the world's first smartphone with a curved display, a variant of the Galaxy Note which moves the Asian giant a step closer to achieving wearable devices with flexible - even unbreakable - screens. Curved displays are on the frontlines of Samsung's innovation war with rivals such as Apple Inc and LG Electronics Inc, as the South Korean firm seeks to expand its lead in the slowing market for high-end smartphones. "It's a step forward for having unbreakable gadgets and flexible devices eventually. But for now, the new phone is more of a symbolic product," said Hana Daetoo Securities analyst Nam Dae-jong, adding that Samsung did not yet have capacity for large-scale production of curved touch-screens for the new Galaxy Round. The Galaxy Round is Samsung's attempt to gauge consumer appetite for curved phones although its lack of other eye-catching features means it is unlikely to be a hit, he said. "I don't think it'll be massively compelling enough for gadget buyers as ... the curved display doesn't come with many unique features," he said. The Galaxy Round's 5.7-inch (14.4-centimetre) display has a slight horizontal curve and weighs less than the Galaxy Note 3, allowing a more comfortable grip than other flat-screen models on the market, Samsung said in a statement. Its key features include a tilt function which allows users to check information such as missed calls and battery life, even when the home screen is off. Users can also scroll through media files by pressing the screen's right or left, the company said. The phone initially would be available only in South Korea and no decision had been made about releasing it in other markets. DESIGN CHALLENGES Curved displays open up possibilities for bendable designs that could eventually transform the high-end smartphone market, where growth has slowed amid competition from low-end producers. Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch released last month has a flat screen, but the company is hoping to have the technology to make more attractive and wearable devices in what is shaping as a key battleground for consumer electronics companies. Technology firms have yet to figure out how to cheaply mass produce the parts and come up with display panels that can be thin and heat-resistant. Batteries also have to take new forms to support flexible screens that can be rolled out, attached to uneven surfaces or even stretched. The battery in the Galaxy Round is not curved, Samsung said. Competition is heating up with Samsung's cross-town rival LG Electronics planning to introduce a smartphone with a vertically curved display in the first week of November, a source familiar with the matter said this week. Its components affiliate, LG Chem Ltd, said on Tuesday it had started commercial production of a curved battery for use in the device. The firm also said it has developed a battery in cable form, suitable for wearable devices, and expected to start commercial production within the next couple of years. Technology analysts and media reports say Apple is working on a smartwatch, potentially with a curved screen, but there has been no word from the California-based company about its plans. Samsung's new curved-screen phone, available through South Korea's biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom Co Ltd, costs 1.089 million won ($1,000).

A new article as written by Charles Oputa; "My Obituary." Right about now, some of the readers will question the sense in capturing and casting this type of crazy captions for my articles. I only write for those who are patient enough to understand the creative beauty of my mind. I write for those who have depth enough to see beyond what they see, those who have a discerning mind. However, if your curiosity has gotten the better of you, then read on. I am about to take up a subject no one really wants any part of, but that's alright, this is where our imagination runs apart. For a brief second, imagine this: if your life were to end today, what would your obituary read? Come on; don't get frightened, thinking about your obituary will not kill you. Nothing escapes the Creator's cycle; not plants, not animals, nor human beings. All living things emerge, gather, spark new life, fall apart and die. The purpose of all of this is not to scare you about death which is inevitable, but to expose you to a new information or rather, share a certain mindset with you that may help you live with humility and aliveness that only an acceptance of death can release. 'My Obituary' is meant to prick your mind to start being fully conscious of the moments you are alive. Every moment of our lives, we are knowingly or unknowingly writing a line for our obituary. Every action or inaction provides memories of us to those we eventually leave behind; they are the memories that the people we love and leave behind will want to include in the telling of our life's story. Within the first quarter of this year, I lost a good friend and cousin, Mr. Emeka Aseme to kidnappers; he was butchered and killed in cold blood. My whole village was not only scandalized by the senseless killing but till today, the 'Blue Lake City' of Oguta has lost the shine it had as a city of bubbling happy go lucky people. Emeka was a good man who provided employment for hundreds of Oguta people, he was sociable, liked by all and sundry (or so we thought). Even though Oguta had a lot of industrious sons and daughters, Emeka's legacies stand out. He cared about his people, he gave a helping hand, and he was sensitive to people's conditions. Now that he's no more, all we have to say of him (his obituary) are his good deeds, what he contributed to the betterment of his fellow man, especially his kinsmen. What would yours read like, now that all you know is 'Me, Myself & I'? What legacy are you living today, is it different from the one you will want to leave behind? Some people live as if they will be here forever, not giving a hoot about what happens to the next person. If it’s not their immediate personal/family gratification, it does not concern them. Mind you, I'm not saying you should not care about your welfare and that of your family o (if you know the AreaFada well you will know that my family remains my ROCK). However, I still make an ample proportion of my time to fighting the course of our youth and being the Voice of the Voiceless. And this gives me joy and fulfillment. For me, it is what keeps blood flowing in my veins, puts the sparkle in my eyes and springs in my steps...despite the unfavourable state of the terrain. Wetin man go do? You are the author of your own Obituary, so tell me. Are you writing a history of misery, or a tale of tenacity? Were you inclusive and supportive? Or were you exclusively out for yourself alone, you selfish bloke. Did you lift others up, or did you allow them to knock you down? Did you stay down long enough to recover, or did you stay down complaining and winning. What will your Obituary say about the way you treated people and how you made them feel about themselves. Most importantly what will your Obituary say about how you treated yourself? What will be said about your attitude, how you handled yourself in crisis. Perhaps now is the time to consider how you are living and what you want to be said about you when you are not. Your life provides the content of your Obituary, so my guy, check yourself and park well. For me, I came, I saw, I did it my way, had fun and boned everyone who thought it wasn’t possible. That’s my Obituary. I'm still here though, for the longer haul! http://news.naij.com/48897.html

At a time when most people are complaining about falling standards in the gospel music industry, sorcery, commonly referred to as ‘juju’ is rumoured to be used by some gospel artistes for career successes. According to available reports in the industry, this “juju” is used to “kill” the growing career of “competitors” who serve as threats in the industry. This issue, which received condemnation in the past, gained prominence again when gospel icon, Hannah Marfo confirmed it in an interview she granted in Accra last Sunday. Speaking on the challenges she had encountered as a gospel artiste in the industry, Hannah lamented on how she virtually had to give up on her musical career because of the numerous problems she encountered on a daily basis. According to the ‘Gye Gye Me’ hit maker, after the release of her hit single “Akristofo Adooso”, which pushed her to prominence in the gospel industry, she could not explain the numerous problems that besieged her on a daily basis. She noted that it was in these trying times that a Prophetess, at whose church she had gone to perform, revealed to her that two female musicians had used other evil mediums including sorcery in an attempt to collapse her career, hence her constant struggle to make any meaningful impact in the industry. Hannah went further to disclose that even though she rubbished those revelations by the Prophetess because she didn’t want to believe that as Christians preaching the word of God through music, some could resort to the use of sorcery to be successful, which is even against the religious beliefs, doctrines and practices of Christians. “But seven years after that the revelation by the Prophetess, I also had a dream where God revealed to me how these two female artistes that the prophetess told me about seven years ago were undermining my progress in the industry. I immediately called the prophetess and informed her about my own revelation and she encouraged me to be more prayerful and depend on God to deliver me from all the challenges I was encountering in my career,” she told Kwabena Idan, the host of “After Church” on Adom FM. She said even after this revelation, she was still not convinced till one gospel artiste, Cecy Twum, whose husband happens to be a Pastor, also confirmed it to her. She was however quick to add that she didn’t bear any grudge against these artistes since she had always been prayerful and knew that God had the ultimate answer to her problems. “At a point in time, I gave up on my musical career because I couldn’t stand all the numerous challenges; but God used my kid sister to encourage me. I remember she once told me that I am not working for man but for God so I shouldn't let anyone hinder my talent. These words have always been my guide anytime I want to give up”. After several attempts from the host to make Hannah mention the names of the said female artistes to which she vehemently denied, she remarked, “It is not necessary because I put my trust in God and I also pray a lot”. This confirmation by Hannah Marfo on the use of “juju” in the industry received widespread condemnation when it made the headlines sometime ago. But he question on the lips of many Ghanaians is: why would Gospel musicians use sorcery in their career? Are they in the industry for business or to proclaim the work of God, as most of them make us believe? http://www.spyghana.com/gospel-musicians-use-juju-gospel-artiste-confirms/ |
For years, scientists have struggled to collect accurate real-time data on earthquakes, but a new article published today in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America may have found a better tool for the job, using the same accelerometers found in most modern smartphones. The article finds that the MEMS accelerometers in current smartphones are sensitive enough to detect earthquakes of magnitude five or higher when located near the epicenter. Because the devices are so widely used, scientists speculate future smartphone models could be used to create an "urban seismic network," transmitting real-time geological data to authorities whenever a quake takes place. The authors pointed to Stanford's Quake-Catcher Network as an inspiration, which connects seismographic equipment to volunteer computers to create a similar network. But using smartphone accelerometers would be cheaper and easier to carry into extreme environments. The sensor will need to become more sensitive before it can be used in the field, but the authors say once technology catches up, a smartphone accelerometer could be the perfect earthquake research tool. As one researcher told The Verge, "right from the start, this technology seemed to have all the requirements for monitoring earthquakes — especially in extreme environments, like volcanoes or underwater sites." http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/29/4783690/scientists-turn-smartphone-accelerometers-into-earthquake-sensors |

According to him, in this modern world where people are trying to take advantage of God, anything is possible. “I don’t really believe in this T.B. Joshua and Jim Iyke’s deliverance. “I don’t believe in T.B. Joshua and his well-planned Gimmicks. Take a careful look at the video, as a good film maker so you can’t simply tell is not real. Samsung announced that it would introduce a smartphone with a curved display in October. The company’s mobile business head of strategic marketing, D.J. Lee, confirmed that Samsung would launch the phone in South Korea. The curved display technology is a fairly new concept that allows smartphone screens to bend or fold to create various designs. Curved displays have been talked about for quite some time, but most expected Samsung to showcase the technology with the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear Watch. Although the main application for flexible displays is in the form of a device that can wrap around a user’s wrist, the innovative technology may also provide some other perks. The plastic liquid crystal displays are shatterproof and the lack of frames could allow manufacturers to produce unique designs. The flexible screen would also be a significantly thinner display, which would allow for more space in traditional smartphones to add in extra memory and other components. Flexible displays however, may not make their debut into mass production soon since manufacturers are still finding means to mass produce the flexible components cheaply. http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/advisor/samsung-launch-flexible-display-phone-october-224306656.html

By Tia Ghose, A man in China whose nose was damaged in an accident is growing a replacement nose on his forehead. After a Chinese man’s nose was irreparably damaged from infection, his doctors decided to “grow” a second nose on the man’s forehead to replace the original nose. The patient, identified only as Xiaolian according to Reuters, has his nose damaged from an infection following a car accident. His doctors decided the only way to reconstruct his nose was to surgically form a new one on the 22-year-old’s forehead. Doctors Grow Ear on Cancer Patient’s Arm Tissue expanders were placed under the skin and then cut to resemble a nose. According to local media, doctors expect to implant the new nose soon. Dr. Patrick Byrne, the director of Facial, Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, said forehead skin is used to help reform noses because it is the closest match to skin on the nose. However, usually the nose is reformed during surgery instead of on a patient’s forehead. “My guess would be that they felt that the tissue in the nose was so damaged they had to use the forehead skin on the interior part of the nose,” said Byrne. “It’ll be a real nose and [have a] breathing passage way.” Scientists Craft 3-D Ear With Printer When the nose is transplanted, cartilage from Xiaolian’s rib will be used to give the nose added structure. Byrne said Xiaolian’s new nose will be most vulnerable during the 18 months after his transplant. “There’s a lot that can happen,” said Byrne. “If he gets a little infection the cartilage can disintegrate… [what looked like a nose] now looks like a blob.” However Byrne said as long as Xiaolian is able to avoid complications, his new nose should work nearly as well as his original nose. “He should be able to smell, the smell receptors are pretty high in the nose,” said Bryne. In the future Byrne imagines that doctors will be able to grow entire ears and noses in the lab before transplant. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2013/09/25/doctors-grow-nose-on-mans-forehead/

The famed physicist said recently that a form of life can be attained after the physical body's demise – but his mind-boggling theory has nothing to do with heaven and hell. Could your brain keep on living even after your body dies? Sounds like science fiction, but celebrated theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking recently suggested that technology could make it possible. "I think the brain is like a program in the mind, which is like a computer," Hawking said last week during an appearance at the Cambridge Film Festival, The Telegraph reported. "So it's theoretically possible to copy the brain on to a computer and so provide a form of life after death." He acknowledged that such a feat lies "beyond our present capabilities," adding that "the conventional afterlife is a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark." Hawking, 71, made the remarks in conjunction with the premiere of a new documentary about his life. He has spoken previously about what he calls the "fairy story" of heaven and the afterlife. Likening the human brain to a computer whose components will fail, he said, "There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers." Some people are actively working to develop technology that would permit the migration of brain functions into a computer. Russian multi-millionaire Dmitry Itskov, for one, hopes someday to upload the contents of a brain into a lifelike robot body as part of his 2045 Initiative, The New York Times reported recently. A separate research group, called the Brain Preservation Foundation, is working to develop a process to preserve the brain along with its memories, emotions and consciousness. Called chemical fixation and plastic embedding, the process involves converting the brain into plastic, carving it up into tiny slices, and then reconstructing its three-dimensional structure in a computer. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/24/stephen-hawking-brains-copied-life-after-death_n_3977682.html?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmaing8%7Cdl17%7Csec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D381076 |
Life On Earth Likely to End in 2.25 Billion Years We have at most 2.25 billion years before the Sun expands, engulfs the Earth. At least we aren't looking for life in all the wrong places anymore. I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that the Earth won't be destroyed by the inevitable heat death of the universe. The bad news is that the planet will be wiped out long before that, between 1.5 billion and 2.25 billion years from now, according to a new study by Andrew Rushby was recently published in Astrobiology. You see, when our Sun starts running out of hydrogen fuel, it will expand until it swallows Mercury and Venus, and potentially even expands into our orbit. Obviously, this means bad things for anything left on Earth. Even if the Sun doesn't grow large enough to reach Earth's orbit, you don't want to hang around waiting for the oceans to boil away and the atmosphere to burst into flame. Trust me, you'll have a bad time. visit these site for more: http://www.tested.com/inventern/458237-life-earth-likely-end-225-billion-years/?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmaing8%7Cdl2%7Csec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D380846

Scientists have said that life on Earth will continue for up to three billion years Life on Earth will continue for up to three billion years but humans will die out far sooner, scientists have said. Researchers say that our planet's increasing proximity to the sun will eventually result in soaring temperatures, the seas drying up and the extinction of all life. But according to a study by the University of East Anglia, in Norwich, man-made climate change will make human life impossible long before this happens and o ur best chance of survival would be to relocate to another planet - with Mars being the most suitable option. Andrew Rushby, from the university's school of environmental sciences, said: "We estimate that Earth will cease to be habitable somewhere between 1.75 and 3.25 billion years from now. "A fter this point, Earth will be in the 'hot zone' of the sun, with temperatures so high that the seas would evaporate. We would see a catastrophic and terminal extinction event for all life. "Of course conditions for humans and other complex life will become impossible much sooner - and this is being accelerated by anthropogenic climate change. "Humans would be in trouble with even a small increase in temperature, and near the end only microbes in niche environments would be able to endure the heat." Almost 1,000 planets outside our solar system have been identified by astronomers. The team of astrobiologists looked at some of these to find out which were best placed to support life. They found that the recently discovered Gliese 581d could be warm and pleasant for up to 54.7 billion years - 10 times longer than our solar system. Mr Rushby said: "To date, no true Earth analogue planet has been detected. "But it is possible that there will be a habitable, Earth-like planet within 10 light-years, which is very close in astronomical terms. "However reaching it would take hundreds of thousands of years with our current technology. "If we ever needed to move to another planet, Mars is probably our best bet. "It's very close and will remain in the habitable zone until the end of the sun's lifetime - six billion years from now." By examining the evolution of life on earth, the team were also able to make predictions about what stage life might be at in other parts of the galaxy. "We had insects 400 million years ago, dinosaurs 300 million years ago and flowering plants 130 million years ago," Mr Rushby said. "Anatomically modern humans have only been around for the last 200,000 years - so you can see it takes a really long time for intelligent life to develop. "The amount of habitable time on a planet is very important because it tells us about the potential for the evolution of complex life - which is likely to require a longer period of habitable conditions. "Of course, much of evolution is down to luck, so this isn't concrete, but we know that complex, intelligent species like humans could not emerge after only a few million years because it took us 75% of the entire habitable lifetime of this planet to evolve. "We think it will probably be a similar story elsewhere." http://uk.news.yahoo.com/earth-too-hot-humans-230112335.html#LtPaF6T
