HealthAustralia Considering Nationwide Ban On Smoking by MCKULQ(op): 1:52pm On Sep 17, 2013
By Andy Kossak

Smokers interested in visiting Australia might want to hurry up and book their travel as the country could become the first major nation to ban smoking.

A federal government-funded trial is about to test the viability of electronic cigarettes as a safer, permanent replacement for tobacco, according to dnaindia.com.

The electronic cigarettes, known as 'E-cigarettes,'' are battery-powered devices that simulate the effects of smoking by heating a nicotine liquid into vapor, which the user then inhales and exhales.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that while the gadgets have been hailed as a safer substitute for cigarettes, there is no comprehensive scientific research into the health risks of inhaling vapor.

The Sydney Morning Herald also noted that the Sun-Herald can reveal that as part of its anti-smoking reform agenda, the previous Labor government committed more than $1 million to a pioneering study that, by 2015, will determine whether or not e-cigarettes could be utilized to phase out traditional cigarettes altogether.

''These types of products have the potential to be beneficial to public health if they are used to completely replace the traditional cigarette. It would be a shame not to explore how they could be used to maximize public health while trying to minimise potential unwanted effects such as making smoking appear glamorous,'' said Coral Gartner, who will lead the trial of more than 1,5000 smokers at the University of Queensland's centre for clinical research.

Australian Medical Association president Steve Hambleton said Australia was the global leader in tobacco control and should not let its guard down.

''Plain packaging is having real impact now, as is the pricing strategy. The end for tobacco is coming,'' Hambleton said.

As usage of e-cigarettes increases, health implications remain hazy. In May, the French government sparked outrage among its nation's one million e-cigarette users by banning the devices in public spaces.

Science/TechnologySamsung Galaxy Gear 2 Due For A January 2014 Unveil by MCKULQ(op): 11:23am On Sep 17, 2013
Luke Edwards - Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 due for a January 2014 unveil

The Samsung Galaxy Gear hasn't even made it to the wrists of the public yet and already Samsung is working on its successor, the Galaxy Gear 2.
According to the Korean Digital Times the first watch was released to gauge public appeal and the next one will be more thought out. Perhaps that refers to the fact the Galaxy Gear only works with the new and expensive Galaxy Note 3 right now. When the Galaxy S4 gets an Android 4.3 update it should work there too, but that's still a very niche market. That's why the Galaxy Gear 2 is expected to be an all-Android-friendly wrist-dweller.
The new Galaxy Gear 2 should feature its own built-in GPS - this would be brilliant coupled with that 4GB on-board memory. With the watch running apps and music you could leave your phone at home when out on a run.
While the iWatch rumour mill has been quiet of late it looks like Samsung may not have needed to rush its first smartwatch out quiet so fast. But with Apple hiring Nike's FuelBand consultant and the new iPhone 5S featuring that Nike focused M7 processor, we'd expect the iWatch to appear in 2014.
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Gear 2 at CES in January 2014. Here's hoping it's managed to cram in enough battery power to last at least a full day - as many early testers are complaining the current Gear can't handle. But we're picking ours up soon so check back to read our full in-depth Samsung Galaxy Gear review.

Science/TechnologyNew See-through Snail Discovered Deep Underground by MCKULQ(op): 10:59am On Sep 17, 2013
A new snail species with a beautifully translucent shell was recently discovered more than 3,000 feet (914 meters) underground in a Croatian cave.

A team of cavers and biologists with the Croatian Biospeleological Society discovered Zospeum tholussum in the Lukina Jama-Trojama cave systems of western Croatia — one of the 20 deepest cave systems in the world — on an expedition to determine the cave's depth. The team collected all animal specimens found along the way, since deep cave crevices are often promising places to find new species, and happened upon one live sample of the new snail, along with eight empty shells. [The 7 Longest Caves in the World]

The team presented the elegant snail to taxonomist Alexander Weigand at Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany, for help in identification. Weigand determined that this particular species had never before been found, but that it is related to other known species.

The new snail and other related species are particularly slow-moving, even by snail standards.

"They only creep a few millimeters or centimeters a week, and mainly in circles, grazing at one point where they live," Weigand said.

Weigand suspects that the snail travels in water currents or catches a ride on other cave animals, such as bats or crickets, to get from one place to another more efficiently.

Health4 Reasons Why You Should Never Skip Breakfast by MCKULQ(op): 10:14am On Sep 17, 2013
Are you tired of hearing about how breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Well, this advice probably not going to stop until more of us start eating our morning meals.

About 18 percent of males and 13 percent of females between the ages of 35 and 54 are breakfast skippers, according to a 2011 study by the market research company NPD group.

But the evidence that suggests that breakfast is a meal not-to-be-skipped is overwhelming. In fact, I have never encountered a study that suggests the opposite.

Here a look at some of the research showing the possible benefits of breakfast:

Diabetes: Skipping breakfast may increase a woman's diabetes risk, according to a study published this month in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Women who ate breakfast an average of zero to six times per week were at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than women who ate breakfast every day. [9 Meal Schedules: When to Eat to Lose Weight]

Heart Disease: Eating breakfast was associated with a lower incidence of heart disease in men between ages 45 and 82, according to a July study in the journal Circulation. The study also found that skipping breakfast was associated with hypertension, insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar levels.

Memory: A 2005 Journal of the American Dietetic Association review of 47 breakfast-related studies found that eating breakfast is likely to improve cognitive function related to memory and test grades. Translation: Eating breakfast is a smart move!

Weight Loss: In one recent study, people who ate breakfast as their largest meal lost an average of 17.8 pounds over three months. The other participants consumed the same number of total calories per day, but ate most of their calories at dinner, according to the study published in July in the journal Obesity. The large-dinner group only lost an average of 7.3 pounds each over the same time period.

Christianity EtcNew App Tells Christians If They Are Walking With God by MCKULQ(op): 8:36am On Sep 17, 2013
By Michael Allen, Fri, September 13, 2013
"Heartpoints" is a new app for iPhones in which Christians can see if they are walking towards heaven or hell.

"Our practical iPhone app introduces a smooth and simple system that allows you to conduct ongoing examination of your thoughts, reactions, and motives throughout the day. Pairing your responses with relevant Scripture verses that match your struggles or triumphs, the app enables you to 'Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation,'" reads the app's description in iTunes.

The app was created by Yed Anikpo, who told The Christian Post that Heartpoints has been downloaded 3,500 times, mostly by women.

The app includes a field to write down your activities. Then you push one of two buttons, one to "Repent" or another to "Give Thanks" (video below).

"Heartpoints is designed to help us capture the stuff that makes up our walk today so that we can examine it and use the information we gather, to inform the rest of our pilgrimage tomorrow," said Anikpo.

Anikpo envisions possible app communities "checking in" with each other and discovering what is "trending" in the church.

CrimeSyrian Rebels Waiting For US Weapons by MCKULQ(op): 9:21am On Sep 13, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Free Syria Army was still waiting for deliveries of weapons promised by the United States, the group's leader said Thursday.

General Salim Idriss told US public radio that the rebels had received humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, as well as military equipment such as bulletproof vests, night vision goggles, communications equipment and computers, but "no direct military support."

"We still (are) waiting to receive weapons and ammunition. And we told our friends in the United States, we hope that you will support us," Idriss told National Public Radio. He said the rebels' most urgent needs were anti-tank missiles and anti-aircraft missiles.

According to Idriss, the US said it would be very difficult to send anti-aircraft missiles. They promised a fuller answer after further consultation in Washington, he said.

US lawmakers have expressed concerns that the weapons could fall into the hands of jihadists.

The interview with Idriss contradicted a report Wednesday in the Washington Post, saying the CIA has begun delivering weapons to rebels in Syria. The shipments began arriving in the past two weeks, the newspaper said, adding that the arms shipments are limited to light weapons and other munitions that can be tracked.

The White House said in early June that it wished to support the rebels with weapons.

PoliticsAmalgamation Not Nigeria’s Problem –ajimobi by MCKULQ(op): 4:18pm On Sep 11, 2013
The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has blamed Nigerians’ attitude for the country’s present woes.

Ajimobi, who said this at the 20th anniversary celebration in memory of the founder of the Development Policy Centre, Prof. Oyetunji Aboyade, on Monday in Ibadan, noted that the coming together of different tribes to form Nigeria should be a source of blessing rather than a curse.

He said, “Nigerians must change for things to improve in this country. The issue of amalgamation is more germane because 2014 will mark the centenary of the amalgamation. Nigerians should not blame the country’s problem on amalgamation, rather we should think of how to solve the present challenges confronting the country.”

The governor cited the United States as an example of a country with multiple race but uniform development. He therefore, urged Nigerians to emulate the US and live in unity.

PoliticsSA Porn Doctor Jailed In UK by MCKULQ(op): 10:04am On Sep 11, 2013
Barend Delport, a South African doctor who was jailed in the UK for six years for taking indecent photographs of his patients.

- A South African doctor practising in Britain has been jailed for six years for taking indecent photographs of his patients, The Star reported on Wednesday.

Half a million pornographic images were found on a computer belonging to Dr Barend Delport, 55, who is originally from Kroonstad in the Free State. Another 5,500 images of children, some of them his patients, were also recovered.

He pleaded guilty to 26 sexual offences in the Maidstone Crown Court, including indecent assault on women and children, and possession and creation of indecent images of children.

Delport was sentenced to six years imprisonment on Monday.

He got patients to sign forms of consent to be photographed, claiming the purpose was to illustrate midwives' poor practises. In other cases he claimed to be a dermatologist, or to be taking the pictures for training purposes.

Judge Philip Statmen said it was "difficult to imagine a greater breach of trust".

Delport qualified as a doctor at the University of Pretoria in 1981, and registered as a general practitioner in the United Kingdom in 1992. He practised in Swanley, Kent.

EducationC’ River Primary School Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike by MCKULQ(op): 9:46am On Sep 11, 2013
TEACHERS in public schools in Cross River State have begun an indefinite strike.

Public primary and secondary schools in the state were scheduled to resume on Monday after the long vacation, but thousands of excited students who trooped to their various schools were disappointed when they were told to return home by the striking teachers.

The teachers are demanding immediate payment of the Teachers’ Specific Allowance (TSA) and release of their promotions by the state government.

The striking teachers, who recalled that they suspended an earlier strike following the intervention of the state government, lamented that after an agreement was reached between the Cross River government and the state’s wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the government is yet to implement it.

The State Chairman of NUT, Eyo-Nsa Itam, disclosed that the state government entered into an agreement with the union to restore the TSA and release promotion of teachers.’

He explained that in the agreement jointly signed by the Commissioner for Finance, Commissioner for Education and the Special Adviser to the governor on Labour Matters, the government agreed to restore the allowances from July 2013. Itam said based on the agreement, the union directed teachers in the state who were already on strike to return to work, but unfortunately the government has till date failed to implement the agreement.

The NUT chairman, who expressed regrets that all efforts by the union to compel government to respect the terms of the agreement have so far proved abortive, castigated the government for allegedly reneging in the pact it freely entered with the union.

“Having failed to respect the agreement reached with the union, the suspended strike of June 2013 is hereby resumed. Teachers of public primary and secondary schools are therefore expected to sit at home from Monday, 9th September 2013 when schools are to resume.”

Itam said the union will “resist further attempt by the state government to treat teachers as second class civil servants as it is only teachers that are ill-treated.”

All the public schools visited look deserted as the children are forced to stay at home.
