A new law against superstition and black magic in India's Maharashtra state has triggered a debate between religious groups who say that the state is interfering in personal faith, and rationalists who say religious malpractices violate human rights. The law was hurriedly promulgated four days after Narendra Dabholkar, an activist who had been campaigning for it for a decade, was assassinated. Dr. Dabholkar headed the Committee for the Eradication of Blind Faith, which has 180 branches across Maharashtra and has exposed many Hindu preachers purporting to conduct miracles and black magic. “We will challenge the law as it is ambiguous and interferes with personal faith,” says Abhay Vartak of the Santan Sanstha, a Hindu organization. “The law does not define much of what it outlaws – ghosts for instance. The government itself is not clear whether ghosts exist! And if belief in ghosts is to be outlawed then what about the Hindu scripture the Atharva Veda, which says a lot about how to get rid of ghosts who come to inhabit a body?” he asks. The law specifically outlaws 12 practices, making them punishable by a jail term of seven months to seven years. Of the 12 clauses, two relate to belief in ghosts. The first one forbids recommending violent and sexual practices for purging ghosts from the body – including drinking urine or stool, being tied with a rope or chain, and touching heated objects. It also outlaws creating fear by threatening to invite ghosts. “The law has too many ’etceteras’ which will be used indiscriminately against private faith, and only against Hindus,” says Vartak of the Sanatan Sanstha. Avinash Patil, acting president of the Committee for the Eradication of Blind Faith, says that law does not mention any religion. “We are not against private faith, only the exploitation and violence that comes when blind faith is used publicly by seers, god-men, and tantriks,” says Mr. Patil. Opponents of the bill are unable to point out problems with the specifics of most of the clauses – such as branding women as witches and making them walk without clothes and beating them; persuading people to substitute medical aid by tying threads or getting bitten by a snake, dog, or scorpion; threatening to bring evil upon someone through supernatural powers; claiming to change the sex of the fetus by inserting fingers in the womb; claiming that one's supernatural powers can help a woman get pregnant if she had sex with him; and claiming that a disabled person has supernatural powers and thus using them for commercial purposes. However, one clause that religious groups are particularly objecting to is about the use of miracles for commercial exploitation. Critics say that if magicians can perform miracles in ticketed magic shows and if miracles could be attributed to Mother Teresa and Sufi saints, why should others be prevented? “I don’t think it’s outlawing claiming miracles, but exploiting the poor by using them,” says lawyer Vrinda Grover. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/indian-state-outlaws-profiting-miracles-summoning-ghosts-160108304.html |

Smartphones are getting bigger as people use them more to watch movies and play games. A new one from Samsung is beyond big. With a screen measuring 6.3 inches diagonally, the Galaxy Mega is almost as big as a 7-inch tablet computer. The difference: It makes phone calls. Samsung says the Mega is a hybrid that combines the portability of a smartphone with the immersive experience that a tablet offers for movies, books, music and games. http://www.cnbc.com/id/100972038

A man who hacked into Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page to expose a software bug is getting donations from hackers around the world after the company declined to pay him under a program that normally rewards people who report flaws. Khalil Shreateh discovered and reported the flaw but was initially dismissed by the company's security team. He then posted a message on the billionaire's wall to prove the bug's existence. (Read more: Facebook allowing embedded posts—just like Twitter ) Now, Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of cybersecurity firm BeyondTrust, is trying to mobilize fellow hackers to raise a $10,000 reward for Shreateh after Facebook refused to compensate him. Maiffret, a high school dropout and self-taught hacker, said Tuesday he has raised about $9,000 so far, including the $2,000 he initially contributed. He and other hackers say Facebook unfairly denied Shreateh, a Palestinian, a payment under its "Bug Bounty" program. It doles out at least $500 to individuals who bring software bugs to the company's attention. "He is sitting there in Palestine doing this research on a 5-year-old laptop that looks like it is half broken," Maiffret said. "It's something that might help him out in a big way." Shreateh uncovered the flaw on the company's website that allows members to post messages on the wall of any other user, including Zuckerberg's. He tried to submit the bug for review but the website's security team did not accept his report. He then posted a message to Zuckerberg himself on the CEO's private account, saying he was having trouble getting his team's attention. "Sorry for breaking your privacy," Shreateh said in the post. The bug was quickly fixed, and Facebook issued an apology Monday for having been "too hasty and dismissive" with Shreateh's report. But it has not paid him a bounty. "We will not change our practice of refusing to pay rewards to researchers who have tested vulnerabilities against real users," Chief Security Officer Joe Sullivan said in a blog post. He said Facebook has paid out more than $1 million under that program to researchers who followed its rules. http://www.cnbc.com/id/100976139 |

The Federal Government has placed some states in the North on a comprehensive security surveillance following intelligence reports that some members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect may avenge the death of their leader, Abubakar Shekau. Also, National Mirror learnt last night that the action became necessary to forestall any breach of the peace by hoodlums who might want to perpetrate violent crimes in the name of the sect. “As I speak to you now, our men have been placed on the alert. Some states considered as flashpoints are also under strict surveillance because we know that some of the fleeing insurgents may want to launch more vicious attacks in order to restate their relevance,” said a senior operative of the State Security Service, SSS, who would not want his name mentioned. The Joint Task Force, JTF, in Maiduguri had on Monday said that Shekau might have died due to fatal injuries he sustained in a clash with government forces. Some of the states that are currently under renewed surveillance are those in the North-East and others, including Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna and Niger. Curiously, Kogi also made the list. There has been no official confirmation of the emergency security measures as the police said such measures would be covert. Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, had in an earlier chat with journalists in Abuja stated that those strategies would not be disclosed. Apart from series of ongoing undercover operations involving most of the security agencies, there would also be an increased deployment of troops in the states under focus, “as their presence is likely to deter crime”. http://news.naij.com/44597.html |

The following are images from Germany of a liver surgery, one of the first surgeries of its kind in the country with the support of a tablet computer to access and visualize planning data. The tablet uses augmented reality, which allows the liver to be filmed with an iPad and overlaid during an operation with virtual 3D models reconstructed from the real organ. Developed by Fraunhofer MEVIS in Bremen, this procedure helps locate critical structures such as tumors and vessels and is expected to improve the quality of transferring pre operational resection plans into actual surgery. Customer calls the zoo’s bluff after ‘lion’ begins barking Beijing: A Chinese zoo’s supposed “African lion” was exposed as a fraud when the dog used as a substitute started barking. The zoo in the People’s Park of Luohe, in the central province of Henan, replaced exotic exhibits with common species, according to the state-run Beijing Youth Daily. It quoted a customer surnamed Liu who wanted to show her son the different sounds animals made — but he pointed out that the animal in the cage labelled “African lion” was barking. The beast was in fact a Tibetan mastiff — a large and long-haired breed of dog. “The zoo is absolutely cheating us,” the paper quoted Liu, who was charged 15 yuan (Dh8.92) for the ticket, as saying. “They are trying to disguise the dogs as lions.” Three other species housed incorrectly included two coypu rodents in a snake’s cage, a white fox in a leopard’s den, and another dog in a wolf pen. The chief of the park’s animal department, Liu Suya, told the paper that while it does have a lion, it had been taken to a breeding facility and the dog — which belonged to an employee — had been temporarily housed in the zoo over safety concerns. Users of China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo service mocked the zoo. “This is not funny at all. It’s sad for both the zoo and the animals,” said one. “They should at least use a husky to pretend to be a wolf,” said another. http://m.gulfnews.com/news/world/other-world/chinese-zoo-under-fire-for-disguising-hairy-dog-as-lion-1.1220555 |

Portronics Handmate Windows 8 Pen is one of those nifty little devices that seem too good to be true when you first read about them. It promises to turn any Windows 8 laptop into a touchscreen device, letting you experience the joys of owning one of those 'hybrid' devices at fraction of the cost. But does it work? Let's find out. Setting up the Handmate Windows 8 Pen is simple - just connect it to any available USB port on your Windows 8 laptop and fix the receiving unit on one of the edges of the screen, about halfway from the top. Go to Control Panel to calibrate the screen (the device comes with instructions on where exactly to go) and a barely a minute later, you are good to go. We hooked up the device to a HP Windows 8 laptop, but any standard Windows 8 machine should do. Put in the batteries into the pen-shaped stylus and start operating your Windows 8 device by touching your laptop screen - swipe around the Windows 8 home screen, touch to start applications, swipe from edge to bring up the system menu and more, just like your device always had touch. The device really comes into its own when playing games like Cut The Rope or when you want to put finishing touches to your masterpiece in Paint. However, there's more to touch than just fun and games - combine the Handmate Windows 8 Pen with Microsoft Office's Inking capabilities (found under the Review tab) and you have perhaps the fastest way to give feedback on Office documents while on the move. A word of caution though, if you're used to super sensitive touch experience of the iPad and the likes, the Handmate Windows 8 Pen will take some getting used to. The stylus requires slightly heavier pressing than you'd probably expect, but not the kind that'll wear you down. It's a small adjustment to make, and one you'll likely make swiftly. The Handmate Windows 8 Pen comes bundled with spare stylus and batteries that power the stylus. Portronics claims 500 hours of battery life given working/ standby ratio of 1:9. The sensors on the Handmate Windows 8 Pen use a combination of infrared and ultrasound technologies and work on screens sized 16-inches and below, which means it is good to use with laptops and even desktop monitors of that size. A newer generation product that will work with screen sizes of up to 25-inches is expected soon. All in all, Handmate Windows 8 Pen offers a decent option for those looking to add a dash of touch to their Windows 8 experience. At Rs. 4,999 it's a not-so-expensive option to see if touch fits in your workflow before you take the plunge and buy an expensive native touchscreen device. http://gadgets.ndtv.com/laptops/reviews/portronics-handmate-pen-adds-touchscreen-experience-to-any-windows-8-machine-324655

Consumers waiting for Microsoft's revamped version of its latest Windows operating system will be able to get the software beginning Oct. 17. The release date for Windows 8.1 is nearly a year after the debut of Windows 8, a dramatic overhaul of the operating system that has been powering most personal computers for decades. Microsoft Corp. unveiled its plans for Windows 8.1 three months ago, but hadn't set a release date until Wednesday. At test version of Windows 8.1 that may still include some bugs has been available since late June. Windows 8 represented Microsoft's attempt to create an operating system that works well on tablet computers, as well as on laptop and desktop machines. But the overhaul confused and frustrated many people, resulting in disappointing sales of devices running on Windows 8. One research firm, International Data Corp., has even blamed Windows 8 for deepening the slump in PC sales as more people rely on smartphones and tablets to connect to the Internet. Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., also absorbed a $900 million charge to its most recent quarterly earnings to account for its expected losses from a company-produced tablet, called Surface, which relies on a slimmed-down version of Windows 8. Windows 8.1 is Microsoft's attempt to make the operating system easier and more appealing to use. It will be available as a free update to owners of Windows 8 machines. The first laptops and PCs featuring Windows 8.1 already installed are scheduled to go on sale Oct. 18. http://gadgets.ndtv.com/laptops/news/microsoft-to-release-windows-81-on-october-17-406111 |

To keep hackers off your smartphone, the standard advice has been to avoid downloading dodgy applications. Digital criminals love to hide their attack code in free porn apps and counterfeit versions of popular programmes such as Angry Birds. Users should be wary of legitimate apps, too. Palo Alto Networks say it has discovered a threat emerging from China and other Asian countries, where hackers are going to the extreme of building their own ad networks. Their goal is to trick developers into embedding the networks’ code in their apps, unwittingly opening a door for malware to be pushed through alongside legitimate ads, according to Wade Williamson, a senior security analyst with the Santa Clara, California-based company. That could make mobile muggings even more difficult to escape, Bloomberg reports. “This is where things get extremely interesting,” Williamson said in an interview. “The issue is that for pretty much anybody who builds a mobile application, they don’t make much money from the application, so they have to build in these hooks to the mobile ad networks. What happens is those ad networks are more or less behaving like crude botnets.” Palo Alto found more than a half-dozen samples of the malware targeting Android devices in a study involving up to 15 “soak sites” used for monitoring attacks, he said. The malicious software enabled hackers to send text messages from infected phones to pay services, a scam known as “toll fraud.” The malware also cleared the way for criminals to access the phones to steal personal information. The findings are a sign that hackers are developing more advanced techniques for making money from infected devices. Another recent study by Lookout Security showed that hackers targeting Russian smartphone users can make as much as $12,000 per month in text-message scams from malware installed via free applications the users downloaded. In April, Lookout also said it discovered a mobile-ad network that appeared innocent at first glance but was in fact malicious. The malware being pushed by the ad network was dubbed BadNews and targeted mostly users in Russia with text-message fraud. It was associated with 32 mobile apps that were downloaded as many as 9 million times from Google Play, according to Lookout. The company said Google deleted the applications and the developers’ accounts after being notified. What’s alarming about the latest threats is that they involve no user interaction. “You have this built-in network for proliferating malware over millions of devices,” Williamson said http://businessdayonline.com/2013/08/phone-hackers-build-networks-to-deliver-legitimate-ads-and-malicious-code/ |
