SPRING CITY, Pa. (AP) — A United Methodist minister convicted under church law of performing his son's same-sex wedding ceremony could learn if he'll be defrocked. A jury of his pastoral peers convicted the Rev. Frank Schaefer Monday of breaking his vows by officiating the 2007 ceremony in Massachusetts after a trial that has rekindled debate over the denomination's policies on homosexuality and same-sex marriage. The jury reconvenes Tuesday morning for the penalty phase, at which both sides will present witnesses. Schaefer could face punishment ranging from a reprimand to a suspension to losing his minister's credentials. "Obviously I'm very saddened. What we're hoping for tomorrow is a light sentence," Schaefer's son, Tim Schaefer, 29, whose wedding led to the charges, said after the verdict Monday night. Schaefer didn't deny that he married his son, but said he did it out of love, not a desire to flout church teaching on homosexuality. "I did not want to make this a protest about the doctrine of the church. I wasn't trying to be an advocate, " Schaefer testified at his trial, held at a Methodist retreat in southeastern Pennsylvania. "I just wanted this to be a beautiful family affair, and it was that." But the Rev. Christopher Fisher, who acted as the church's prosecutor, told jurors that Schaefer's disobedience couldn't go unpunished. "Ministers are not free to reinterpret (their) vows according to personal preference," said Fisher, whose closing argument condemning homosexuality prompted Schaefer's supporters to stand in silent protest in the gymnasium that served as a temporary courtroom. "As a father, I understand the desire to show love and support to my children," Fisher said. "It's not always true we can do for our children everything they want us to do. True love draws boundaries." The nation's largest mainline Protestant denomination accepts gay and lesbian members, but it rejects the practice of homosexuality as "incompatible with Christian teaching" and forbids pastors from marrying same-sex partners. Testifying in his defense Monday, Schaefer said he might have lost what he called his "ritual purity" by disobeying the Methodist Book of Discipline, but said he felt he was obeying God's command to minister to everyone. The church's sole witness was Jon Boger, a member of Schaefer's congregation, who filed a complaint against the pastor less than a month before the six-year statute of limitations was set to expire. He said he felt betrayed when he learned earlier this year that Schaefer, who had baptized his children and buried his grandparents, had presided over a gay wedding. "When pastors take the law of the church in their own hand ... it undermines their own credibility as a leader and also undermines the integrity of the church as a whole," Boger said. http://news.yahoo.com/pastor-performed-gay-wedding-learn-fate-071457261.html |

The Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the Anambra, Mr. Tony Nwoye, so as his relatives, could not vote in Saturday’s election because he could not find his name in the voter’s register at his Nsugbe Ward 1 polling booth in Anambra East Local Government Area. Nwoye and his parents were unable to vote just as he alleged that over 30 percent of his supporters were disenfranchised as they could not trace their names in the register. INEC officials were unable to provide any reasons for the situation even though all these people had valid voters card. Nwoye said to the journalists that rigging of the election was pre-planned and the style adopted by APGA in connivance with INEC was to remove people’s name from the voter’s register especially in areas where APGA lacked support. According to him, the same list that was used to disenfranchise him and his parents was that one used in voting in the last election. He couldn't but wonder why how this time around over 30 percent of the registered names were missing. He stated he tried to communicate to the INEC boss Attahiru Jega but the attempts failed. Nwoye said as at now, the only option for him is to resign himself to fate until the results of the elections were released. But he expressed optimism that despite the plot to disenfranachise him and his supporters in his hometown, he would still emerge victorious. http://news.naij.com/52189.html |

By Jaiyeola Andrews President Goodluck Jonathan Friday in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau gave a stern warning that the global community would no longer tolerate military role in governance both in Africa and other parts of the world. While addressing a special session of the National Peoples’ Assembly during his visit to the country, Jonathan charged their Armed Forces to embrace total respect for democracy and constitutionalism in the interest of their nation. “It is no longer fashionable today to see the military parading themselves as the custodians of political power. Rather, it is fashionable for the military to embrace the protection, preservation and total respect for constitutional order and democracy in order to build a prosperous and an egalitarian society", he said. He dropped the hints at the session which was also attended by members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of civil society organizations. Jonathan who said he was in Bissau to show solidarity to the government and people of Guinea Bissau as part of efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability on the African continent, also re-stated Nigeria’s condemnation of recent attacks on the Nigerian Embassy and Nigerian nationals in Guinea Bissau. According to him, “mischief makers” in the country should be discouraged from inciting the public against brotherly Nigerians and Africans. The President however called on the authorities of Guinea-Bissau to bring the perpetrators of the criminal attacks to justice. “We should be our brothers’ keepers and work hand-in-hand in this era of globalization so as to reap the fruits that come with it. I want to reassure you that the incident that led to the death of a Nigerian will not deter us from our desire to ensure that peace and stability is restored in Guinea-Bissau,” he told the Parliament. Jonathan noted that the objective of his visit was to “identify with your aspiration to transform your country to the status of a stable and democratic society that will guarantee peace and stable democratic governance, which is a fundamental pre-requisite for meaningful economic development.” He therefore called on the country’s political leaders and members of its Armed Forces to “remain steadfast and maintain the commitment which you have demonstrated right from the onset until the transition process is successfully completed with the holding of general elections which will take place soon.” He urged all stakeholders in the country to sheathe their swords and work together in harmony to salvage the nation. He assured the gathering that Nigeria and ECOWAS will continue to make financial and material contributions to ensure that the general elections are held as quickly as possible. The Speaker of the National Peoples’ Assembly, Ibraima Sori Djalo thanked President Jonathan and the Nigerian government for “Nigeria’s presence in our country every time we need support, particularly in this last crisis to which we are determined to find a solution.” He described the October attack on Nigerians in Guinea Bissau as very “depressing” and reiterated the earlier official apology conveyed to Nigeria on the incident. Both countries later signed a Cooperation Agreement to boost bilateral relations between them. The agreement was signed by the Nigerian Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and his Guinea Bissau counterpart, Fernando Delfim da Silva, in the presence of President Jonathan and his host, the Interim President of Guinea Bissau, Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo and top government officials of both countries. During bilateral talks between the delegations of the two countries, which preceded the signing of the cooperation agreement, President Nhamadjo informed President Jonathan of the commitment of his government to conduct general elections and implement the reformation of Guinea-Bissau’s Security and Defense Forces with the assistance of ECOWAS. He also thanked Jonathan for his tireless and positive efforts as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Contact Group on Guinea Bissau and Nigeria’s material and human support especially through its troops in ECOWAS Mission in Guinea Bissau (ECOMIB). Jonathan had on arrival in Bissau, laid wreaths at the tombs of Guinea-Bissau’s great nationalist hero, Amilcar Cabral and other fighters for the nation’s independence. The President also had a meeting with members of the country’s Armed Forces led by the Chief of Defense Staff, General Antoni Indjai. Before departing Guinea Bissau for The Gambia, President Jonathan met with members of the Nigerian community and also visited the Nigerian contingent of ECOWAS Mission in Guinea Bissau (ECOMIB) at Bras, Bissau. http://www.thisdayonline.com/ |
The Central Bank of Nigeria has defended the naira with $18.7bn at the Wholesale Dutch Auction System between April and November 4 in a bid to save the currency, an investigation by newsmen has shown. Calculations from data obtained from the CBN website on Thursday showed that the bank offered $18.7bn to currency dealers in 59 auctions in the seven-month period. The data showed that the central bank sold the highest amount of dollars in the month of July, offering $3.3bn, the highest in the year. The CBN had in July hiked the cash reserve requirement for public sector deposits to 50 per cent from 12 per cent in a bid to tighten liquidity and shore up the value of the naira, but has failed to stem the currency’s decline. Prior to that, in June, the naira declined 0.4 per cent to N159.45 per dollar, hitting the highest since September 24, 2012. The data also showed that the bank offered to the public $2.8bn in the month of September, making it the second highest in the year, while it offered a total of $2.6bn in the month of October. However, the CBN on October 2, replaced the WDAS with the Retail Dutch Auction System because of the ineffectiveness of the former in order to address hitches in the foreign exchange market. The Head, Global Research Africa, Standard Chartered Group, Ms. Razia Khan, said the WDAS was abused because it allowed banks to collate bids for clients and make a single forex bid. However, under the RDAS, banks will place bids for clients who qualify to buy forex at the official auction. “This change will allow the authorities to monitor more accurately various sources of forex demand and any potential duplication of forex demand in the system. Banks will remain responsible for all documentation requirements,” she added. Newsmen gathered that the CBN had, in a couple of months back, resumed direct intervention by selling dollars to end-users in the market. It was gathered that the regulator took the decision in order not to devalue the naira. There had been speculations that the CBN would devalue the naira, thereby fuelling an excessive demand for the dollar. A reliable source in the CBN had told newsmen that “The CBN has resumed intervention by selling dollars to end-users. The bank has a dealing whereby it sells to the WDAS, but very rarely sells to end-users directly. “If the market is tight, it can sell or buy from end users, but it is uncommon. The implication is to increase supply and make the naira appreciate.” The CBN Governor, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, had said that he would do everything possible to defend the naira and ensure its stability, including using the nation’s foreign reserves to achieve the purpose http://news.naij.com/51628.html |

ammyluv2002: Your answer is very simple.........Thanks, but yet is not the answer to my question My boss asked me to find out these for him because the wife does not contribute to any financial role in the family and the wife gets paid well then him. He wants to know what women do with there money. |
Why do nigerian women wants the man to do everything ? From what i have seen, it's like in this part of the world; Nigeria,it seems our women do not have any role to play in the family. In most families the woman is working and get paid well in her field than the man, yet she keeps demanding from the man.IN most families, the man plays the financial roles from the house rent to the feeding, down to the children's school fees, nepa/water bills and even clothing. But is not like this in other countries where the woman has her own role in the family.( Eg ), she takes care of the house rent or nepa/water bills at the end of every month. my question here is, what is our women doing with there salaries?. Because this is really given me headache. team garri price team end time is also allowed. I want you to drop your comment and provide answers to these questions.

By MARCIA DUNN CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Scientists have found a planet way out in the cosmos that's close in size and content to Earth — an astronomical first. But hold off on the travel plans. This rocky world is so close to its sun that it's at least 2,000 degrees hotter than here, almost certainly too hot for life. Astrophysicists reported Wednesday in the journal Nature that the exoplanet Kepler-78b appears to be made of rock and iron just like Earth. They measured the planet's mass to determine its density and content. It's actually a little bigger than Earth and nearly double its mass, or weight. Kepler-78b is located in the Cygnus constellation hundreds of light-years away. Incredibly, it orbits its sun every 8½ hours, a mystery to astronomers who doubt it could have formed or moved that close to a star. They agree the planet will be sucked up by the sun in a few billion years, so its time remaining, astronomically speaking, is short. More than 1,000 exoplanets — worlds outside our solar system — have been confirmed so far. NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, used to discover Kepler-78b, has identified 3,500 more potential candidates. The telescope lost its precise pointing ability earlier this year, and NASA has given up trying to fix it. Scientific teams in the United States and Switzerland used ground observatories to measure Kepler-78b. http://kepler.nasa.gov/

A physician at the Nigerian National Hospital, Dr Agnes Eguagie, of the Department of Medicine advised people with hypertension and diabetes to avoid energy drinks because of their caffeine content, Abuja, Friday Dr Agnes Eguagie gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. "Energy drinks are an attempt by the manufacturer to boost people’s energy alertness by combining the properties of certain compounds that we know that this can actually help. They contain caffeine. Caffeine makes people alert, they contain glucose, which is supposed to give you energy, they contain some B vitamins, then some may contain one or two amino acids. But the problem with these drugs is that combining all this things together is not actually really helpful. They have very high levels of caffeine in them and caffeine in itself has its own problems. Apart from the fact that it makes you alert it actually gives some people nervousness and tremor. For patients who are hypertensive, the high level of caffeine will cause the blood vessels to constrict and the blood pressure to shoot up; you can come down with a stoke. For those that have hypertension and diabetics, they don’t know, because there is a lot of glucose in it. These are not usually advisable, because as I said the high amount of caffeine in it is actually quite detrimental. So, generally, I would not advise patients to take it. Energy drinks taken in excess could cause heart burn, insomnia, ulcer and would increase the blood pressure." The doctor advised the public, particularly the youth to reduce their intake of energy drinks and avoid mixing it with alcohol, which she said was usually the situation. "Apart from the fact that caffeine can cause increase in blood pressure if it becomes a habit, it can also give you heart burn, it can give you ulcer. It can also increase your heart beat rate and give you tremulousness and insomnia and you wouldn’t be able to sleep well. Fine, you are saying it is giving you energy and making you alert but the next effect is that you are going to be so tired and you can’t sleep. Your body cannot rest, so, that means it would affect you functioning later. Another thing they do is mixing it with alcohol. Alcohol itself has its own effect on the central nervous system. Caffeine itself has its own effect on the central nervous system, so you can see that two of them are going to be acting on the person’s central nervous system. Some people say they take it every day, it gives them energy to do their daily activity that is very bad, so I will advise against it. Maybe, a young person with no hypertension, no diabetes, can take a can once in a while, fine it might not necessarily do anything to him." READ MORE: http://news.naij.com/50606.html
