Science/TechnologyAll The World's Gold Came From Collisions Of Dead Stars, Scientists Say by MCKULQ(op): 3:54pm On Aug 13, 2013
All that glitters is not gold, they say. But all the gold in the world may come from astronomical events that send a lot of high-energy light out in space.

Researchers have new evidence that gold comes from the collision of neutron stars.

"We can account for all the gold in the universe from these collisions," said Edo Berger, astronomer at the Harvard-Smithson Center for Astrophysics.

Berger spoke about these results, submitted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, at a press conference July.

Neutron stars are the dead cores of stars; in the past, they had exploded as supernovae. The neutron stars responsible for the event that Berger and colleagues studied are each thought to be about the size of Boston, but with about 1.5 times the mass of the sun.

When these two neutron stars orbiting each other collided, at high speed, they gave birth to a black hole. Because the combination of the neutron stars is too heavy, the merged object collapses into the black hole.

Neutron stars collide because gravitational radiation steals the energy from their orbit, said Stan Woosley, astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was not involved in the study. Each of these star cores is like gigantic atomic nucleus, he said in an e-mail.

"Smash two of them together at close to the speed of light and you can expect fireworks," Woosley said.

Berger and colleagues observed a short-duration gamma-ray burst, which they believe came from such a neutron star collision. The burst is a flash of high-energy light, and this particular one lasted for less than two-tenths of a second, which is why it's considered "short duration."

The burst was 3.9 billion light-years away from Earth -- that's pretty far, but it's still one of the closest gamma-ray bursts that scientists have spotted.

The gamma-ray burst left behind a glow that included a significant amount of infrared light. According to the scientists, the radioactive elements, produced when merging neutron stars spat out material, emitted this light when they underwent radioactive decay. That's because decay heats the matter that was ejected, Woosley said.

This infrared glow was a golden opportunity for scientists. It gave them evidence that short-duration gamma-ray bursts can come from neutron star collisions.

"This is our smoking gun connecting a short gamma-ray burst with the collision of two neutron stars," Berger said.

There is still the possibility that the particular infrared light that the scientists spotted was not the result of radioactive decay, but a different light that was produced along with the gamma-ray burst, Woosley said. But the story of how gold formed from the neutron star collisions, he says, "is almost certainly true."

Although the idea has been floated that gold comes from explosions of supernovae, simulations suggest that it's hard to produce gold that way, Berger said. Supernovae may contribute some fraction of gold to the universe, he said, but it appears that neutron star collisions are the dominant mechanism of producing gold in our universe.

Scientists believe that the material that the merging neutron stars flung out included gold -- a lot of gold.

Berger estimates that the equivalent of 10 moon masses of gold are created and ejected when two neutron stars merge. At today's market rate, that would go for about 10 octillion dollars, he said. That's a 1 followed by 28 zeros.
Platinum and uranium also come from this collision process, Woosley said. All of these elements swirl around between stars, as gases, and eventually become part of subsequent generations of stars, like our sun.

"The gold and platinum in our rings as well as the uranium in our bombs and reactors are little pieces of neutron stars that merged in our galaxy long before the sun was born," Woosley said.

This same gold from space became part of the formation of Earth and the rest of the solar system, including the sun.

Gold that was present in the Earth's formation sank to its core. But we have gold that can be mined closer to the planet's surface because meteorites brought it later, according to a 2011 study in the journal Nature. More than 200 million years after the planet was formed, a shower of meteorites hit and brought with them gold, which stayed in the planet's mantle.

Think about that the next time you wear a gold wedding band or other piece of jewelry. Now there's a fascinating thing about your bling.

FamilyS-african Women Married To Nigerians Threaten Protest by MCKULQ(op): 9:08am On Aug 13, 2013
South African women married to Nigerians, threatened to stage mass protest in Johannesburg to stop discrimination against them, their husbands and children.

Mrs Lindelwa Uche, the chairperson of the United Nigerian Wives in South Africa, UNWISA, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria during the launch of the association, Sunday, in Johannesburg.

Uche said that South African society did not take their marriage to Nigerians as serious relationships.
Some South African women married to Nigerians staged a peaceful protest in Johannesburg.

She said: “Our society does not take our marriages serious, they see our marriages as relations of convenience and perceive us as evil to the society.

“All of us are South Africans married to Nigerians living in South Africa, we decided to come together to fight against stigmatisation, discrimination, and humiliation, against our families by government departments and agency and the officials of the government, the community and our-in-laws.”

The chairperson said an earlier protest march by the members of the association had not generated any response from the Home affairs office.

“We protested against discrimination from home affairs officials in March this year, and since after that protest we have not received any response from the government. We felt before we embark on any further action we should come together and form an association registered by law.

“After the official launch of our association, our next action will be more than just a protest march to the city of Johannesburg home affairs office. It is going to be a protest where we will strip on the street of Johannesburg, so that people and government will know that there is an existing body and that we are not happy with the way our non South Africans husband and children are being treated.

“We also plan to carry our protest to Nigeria, we know that some South Africans also have businesses in Nigeria, if it is necessary we will take actions that will stop South Africa businesses operating in Nigeria. Indeed we are ready to go that far.

“We have been quiet for so long but we cannot can’t take it anymore, for the sake of the future of our children, we have to put an end to this discrimination.”

She said there was need for them to collectively tackle the issue of some Nigerians residing in South Africa being unfairly separated from their families due to pending residence permit that eventually lead to deportations.

“If we don’t stand up as daughter of the soil and fight discrimination against our marriages who will, if we don’t stand up and fight for the rights of our husbands when they are being violated and treated shabily by officials of the government and citizens alike who will.

“If we don’t stand up for our children when they are being called derogatory names like “Small lee kwere-kwere” or turning their natives names upside down deliberately by our community in the name of making them feel like aliens, outcast, and unwelcome, or even when their Nigerian aunties and uncles call them bustards, then their future is in jeopardy.

“If we don’t stand up when our countrymen and women, officials and in-law address us as paper wives, gold diggers, stupid and opportunist, who will do that for us, ” Uche queried.

She said the notion that all Nigerians are criminals must be corrected.

“We are in a country of law and order, if anyone is found guilty let the law take its course, we are not saying Nigerians

are good or bad, even in the South Africa society, there are criminals and indeed there is no country in the world that does not have criminals,’’ Uche said.

Ikechkwu Anyene, President of the Nigeria Union in South Africa (NUSA), said the association is a good initiative by the women who are suffering discrimination and humiliation because they are married to Nigerians.

“We at the NUSA have been working with them even before the association was registered as a body, we were with them when they carried a protest match to the home affairs office in Johannesburg,

“we will continue to support them to achieve their goal which is to put an end to discrimination by the government officials and their brothers and sisters towards them for being married to Nigerian.

“The initiative is also to unite Nigeria and South Africa and indeed the whole of Africa, to see each other as brothers and sisters and to ensure that we stand by one another,” Anyene said.

He, however, advised the body to carry along all South Africans married to Nigerians irrespective of their tribe and geo-political zone and the tribe of their husbands.

PoliticsFG Set To Use Social Media To Communicate With Nigerian Youth by MCKULQ(op): 3:37pm On Aug 12, 2013
The federal government has unveiled a strategic framework aimed at accelerating youth development in the country in line with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.

While revealing the framework, the minister of youth development, Mr. Inuwa Abdul-Kadir, said that the framework would provide support structure, monitoring and evaluation for all on-going employable and entrepreneurship development programme in the federal, state and local government areas.

He added that the ministry has started the process of institutionalizing a Career Assessment Programme (CAP) as a major component of the National Youth Service Corp Scheme.

The framework for youth development, according to the minister, is divided into four domains, including social mobilisation, leadership development, social media and youth employment.

The social media component of the framework is built around the thematic issues of the National Youth Policy as a critical platform of information, education and communication with the Nigerian youth.

There have been several documents by government designed to positively utilize the strength of the Nigerian youth. However, none of them appears to have brought the best out of them. The present administration will be hoping that the framework does some good for national youth development.

Science/TechnologyNigeria Moves To Put Man In Space by MCKULQ(op): 1:41pm On Aug 10, 2013
Nigeria has taken serious steps to put the country’s first man into space in 2015 with the assistance of the British government. The federal government, according to dailymail.co.uk, has accepted £300million this year alone to set in train ambitious plans to launch the country’s own rockets. The medium said the first Nigerian astronauts are being trained to join Russian, Chinese or American missions within the next two years. Britain’s support for Nigeria’s space initiative and other countries has been criticised by its nationals, who said that the Department for International Development’s budget will rise by 35 per cent in real terms by 2015. They said while aid costs are ballooning, spending on the military, the police, border control and care homes is being slashed by the government. Britain is also spending about £280million a year on aid to India, another country with its own space programme.

Jonathan Isaby from the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “When budgets are tight both for families and the government alike, people cannot understand why ministers are sending more of our hard-earned cash overseas. Taxpayers find it especially unacceptable when their money is sent abroad as aid to developing countries which then somehow find sufficient cash to fund the likes of a space programme.

“It is totally unacceptable that British taxpayers’ money is effectively subsidising Nigeria’s efforts to send an astronaut into space”, he said. Nigeria’s space programme started in 2003 but its first satellite lost power and disappeared from orbit.

It now has three in space, NigComSat-1R, NigeriaSat-2 and Nigeria-Sat X, the first to be constructed by Nigerian engineers. Although Nigeria has bought its own satellites and launched on Russian rockets, the federal government has built laboratories which it hopes will produce its own space craft by 2028. -

Indication emerged yesterday that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may call off its ongoing strike before or soon after the Sallah celebration, as the federal government may have caved into the demands of the union by meeting about 60 per cent of what it is asking for.

This was the outcome of a closed-door meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday and Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam; Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayat Rufa’i as well as some other ministers over the current industrial action being embarked by ASUU.

Other ministers who were at the meeting with the president on Monday evening included the minister of finance and the coordinating minister of the economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu.

No official statement was issued at the end of the meeting, as Suswam, Okonjo-Iweala and Wogu declined to comment on the outcome of the meeting despite effort made by State House Correspondents to make them talk.

A reliable presidency source told LEADERSHIP that, at the meeting, President Jonathan directed Suswam and the ministers to do all they could to ensure that strike is called off by the union, saying that Jonathan was very worried that the ASUU strike was distorting the academic calendar, his immediate constituency

Samsung has applied for US and South Korean trademarks for a watch that connects to the internet.

Samsung described Samsung Galaxy Gear as a wearable digital electronic device in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle in its application to the US Patent and Trademark Office.

A month earlier, it applied for a Samsung Gear trademark in South Korea.

In May Samsung registered design patents in South Korea that show a wristwatch with a flexible display.

The trademark filings are the latest sign that global technology companies are racing to apply mobile technology to wearable products such as watches and glasses.

PoliticsJonathan Urges Politicians To Shun Ethnic Politics by MCKULQ(op): 12:10pm On Aug 05, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan has stressed the need to bring an end to ethnic politics in the country.

Speaking at a reception held in honour of Tony Anenih, the president decried the inflammatory comments made by certain individuals, noting that Nigeria needs more nationalistic politicians like Mr. Anenih.

While noting that the celebrator enjoys unrivaled reverence due to his nationalistic outlook, President Jonathan said Nigerians can learn from Anenih because he has always been a nationalist.

He said: “We can learn from him because he has always been a nationalist.

“From him, let’s learn to sing the song of unity and use our cleavages for good and not to promote disunity. Some provocative statements have come from elder statesmen who witnessed civil war. But Tony Anenih has never made such statements, this explains why the hall is filled to capacity today,” the President said.

Anenih, giving the vote of thanks, urged the past and current leaders to learn to forgive one another.

He said: “The leaders are gathered here today and this is why we ask ourselves why can’t we forget the past and move forward. I must confess that I was thrilled that President Obasanjo came to the church.

“This is the kind of forgiveness leaders have to show for the country to move forward”. He said and called for support for the Jonathan administration.

“(Gen). Abdulsalami Abubakar and (Gen Ibrahim Babangida), (both former leaders), IBB are here, They can give us peace. I believe that if all of us here put our hands behind him (President Jonathan) and genuinely advise him, even our worst enemy – Boko Haram – will be afraid”.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan has launched the world’s first talking humanoid robot “astronaut” toward the International Space Station.

Kirobo — derived from the Japanese words for “hope” and “robot” — was among five tons of supplies and machinery on a rocket launched Sunday from Tanegashima in southwestern Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said.

Tomotaka Takahashi, of the University of Tokyo, helped design Kirobo.

The childlike robot was designed to be a companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata and will communicate with another robot on Earth, according to developers. Wakata is expected to arrive at the space station in November.

Takahashi wants Kirobo to act as a mediator between people and machines.

Robot designer Tomotaka Takahashi, of the University of Tokyo, advertiser Dentsu and automaker Toyota Motor Corp. worked on the robot.

The challenge was making sure it could move and talk where there was no gravity. Ahead of the launch, the 34-centimeter (13-inch) tall Kirobo told reporters, “one small step for me, a giant leap for robots.”

Kirobo was among the cargo in a rocket launched Sunday from Tanegashima in southwestern Japan.

Japan boasts the most sophisticated robotics in the world, but because of its “manga” culture, it tends to favor cute robots with human-like characteristics with emotional appeal, a use of technology that has at times drawn criticism for being not productive.

But Takahashi said sending a robot into space could help write a new chapter in the history of communication.

“I wish for this robot to function as a mediator between person and machine, or person and Internet and sometimes even between people,” he said.

JAXA said the rocket launch was successful, and the separation of a cargo vehicle, carrying the robot to the space station, was confirmed about 15 minutes after liftoff.
