Yes you are right..the Yoruba tomato sellers of cus will call the big round tomato Hausa tomatoes ,but the end users often buy what the women are selling ,you will hardly see a person that wants to make stew or soup says that it's hausa tomato (hybrids)I want not Yoruba tomato (oblong).
That's why those market women prefer to buy and sell the oblong tomato when it's available, cus they will sell it the same price regardless. |

Agriculture › Re: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by mcyemite(m): 9:06pm On Jun 10, 2023 |
REUBEN010: Okay. Thanks. What's mostly available here is the local tomatoes that has oblong fruit shape? Doesn't sell as much as the hybrid. Yeah,it doesn't sell as much (in price)as hybrids(Hausa tomatoes) but the it does affect the price of the hybrid tomatoes ...at the market, the market women buying to resell often opt to buy the local oblong tomato cus it's cheaper.when a crate of hybrid is selling for 15k that of the local can sell for as less as 3-5k,most times thier customers don't care.tomato is tomato to them.. |

Hello everyone,I'm planning to plant cucumber after my tomato is done this month, during my cucumber market survey,I realized the dark green cucumber isn't really the favourite in my area..they prefer the lighter ones...
From what I've learnt from this thread,I can see greengo is the king here, but unfortunately it's dark green, pls I would like to know what other variety is a good as greengo but not dark green..
Below is a picture of the variety most sellers have

REUBEN010: Based on observations overtime, market dynamics of tomatoes follow a regular pattern. Most tomato farmers (a major source of glut because of large land holdings and cheaper inputs) in the North practice irrigation-fed agriculture. They commence cultivation of tomatoes and some other vegetables during August. So their produce hits the market from December until April with few spilling into May.
On the other hand, local tomato farmers here in the South practice rain-fed and have to wait until April or May before commencing cultivation to avoid losses caused by vagaries in weather (as already seen this year).
The few enterprising and privileged farmers in the South take advantage of the short lag between when Northern tomatoes are leaving the market and when local tomato farmers in the South start producing and supplying markets. This lag is Between May and July (or August in some years). So in order to hit the goldmine at this scarcity period, you have to nurse your seeds by February, March or early April.
Congratulations!!! You just achieved that.
Just my opinion while we await opinions from others. This is highly appreciated sir .thank you very much |

Farmerakinloye6: I start picking yesterday at 84 days old..it is not up to a crate.. weather dealt with the plant no be small, sorry for those that did rain fed then. Tomato price range between 18-11k at the depend on the quality. the price of tomato for we in Lagos or Ogun state is not as Rossy like those in other western states..before I sold 15k today my mouth almost peel.. That being said..I remember asking @farmerakinloye6 earlier this year that what date should nursery be done in other for one to meet up and sell at good price,I followed the timing and he was correct..my tomato came out at peak period sold and still selling at relatively good price...my question is that please my seniors (I just started farming last August so I be small boy) what are the things that really determines the price of tomato in the west i.e Lagos,Ogun, oyo, ekiti, ondo and osun, what are the forecasting instruments and signs to know when tomato will do well in market ...ejo e la mi loye. @Farmerakinloye6 @Oluchidelly @REUBEN010 @granpoh @Simfglobal |

Agriculture › Re: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by mcyemite(m): 11:17am On May 17, 2023 |
REUBEN010: In my opinion, drenching the plants and fruits with a fungicide combination of copper + mancozeb will contain it. You can alternate with bluesnow or five star fungicides. Remember to spray regularly.
For prevention, avoid handling your crops during the cooler part of the day (morning and late evening). You can transmit the disease rapidly when you handle the wet leaves. Everything you said was actually observed ,copper and mancozeb (Coco force and saaf) were part of routine fungicides that we spray alternatively every 5 days and after heavy rainfalls other fungicides we spray are fungi care (Azoxystrobin 200G/L + Difenoconazole) and cabri duo. Thanks for your contribution... |

Simfglobal: I will ask the following questions based on experience: 1. Did you spray herbicide during your land preparation? That's my prime suspect.
2. Is your water clean, hope it's not treated with any chemical. Did you irrigate well?
3. Are there any undecomposed weed or leaves under your bed?
4. Lastly, but not likely...it could be nematodes, remove the dying ones immediately and check their Roots.
My humble submission sir I would like to ask ,what would undecomposed weed or leaves do to a tomato plants... |

Aquadude16: Baba you are 100% right. Let me share my little experience. I relocated to a bigger site late last year to expand my production. I use same template I used in farming my crops in my previous farm but I can tell you sir that i have being failing back to back till I hit the rock bottom. Millions of naira wasted since I doubled my production . I wan buy sniper drink but when I see say e cost pass malt and milk I change my mind. Tho things has begin to change gradually. Farming is not for the mild heart oooo. And I would advise any farmer to test the river with a foot when ever you want to upscale your production or when changing location. If possible do soil analysis Senior abeg weytin happen gangan..share your experiences with us, what exactly went wrong ? What it human error or it was nature. |

Farmerakinloye6: sure! Don't use overdose or spray it frequently,if you do it will burn your plant. Once in two or three weeks is okay! Thanks boss...fungicare too has the same active ingredients as blue snow I will get it right away.... although I've used it on these same plants before once cus the container is just 100ml... |

If not introduce it when your tomato plant is exactly a month on the field, 15ml per 16lit, once in 2-3 weeks in evening. Alright thanks boss..they I also spray when the plants have started fruiting ? |

OluchiDelly: I asked about the history of the land the other day if tomato has previously been cultivated on it before. Deficiency wl not give leaves dark spots. its disease, most likely early blight, late blight is worse. Get ortiva top or blue snow, both contain same ingredients. The land has actually been idle for like a ddecad, I don't know the histoy before then.. Alright I will get bluesnow asap I've not seen ortiva top in all the stores I've been to |
