I have been visualizing my dream kitchen and looking through home interior magazines lately, and I am so ready to plan my kitchen layout myself.
Whether you have decided to design your kitchen yourself, go to a cabinet distributor or home centre, or asked a professional designer for help.
Before you begin, bear in mind that you don't want just good looking furniture, but also one that is functional and allows you to move around quickly when preparing your food, provides enough storage space and is easy to clean.
There are four basic kinds of kitchen layouts;
1. Wall Layout - where the refrigerator, cooker and sink is located along the wall in a straight line.
2. Corridor Layout - This has work stations on both sides of a narrow hallway or walkway in the middle of only about 3-5 feet wide.
3. "L" Layout - which has two legs joined at one corner perpendicularly to form an "L".
4. "U" Layout - which as the name implies has the refrigerator, cooker and sink arranged in a "U" format.
Here are some of the beautiful kitchen designs I came across in my search. I would love to have one of these in my home, in these kind of kitchens you can never be too tired to cook, trust me your cooking in this kind of environment will always be delicious!( laughs).

PropertiesWall Coverings by mearsk(op): 1:34pm On Apr 23, 2015
Good day to you, I hope you are having a great day so far. Today I want to talk about wall coverings, as these can help create that pleasant interior look you can fall in love with.

Do you know that a wall covering can create different kinds of atmosphere in a room? They come in a multitude of types and styles, and are comprised of all materials that may be used to cover a wall for decorative and/or utilitarian purposes.

Well, a few people would debate the aesthetic excellence of wall coverings over paint but we might be surprised to note that there is such a wide array of treatments that may be used to cover a wall.

Most wall coverings can retain their original beauty and performance characteristics for at least 10 years under normal usage conditions, whereas a painted surface must be cleaned more frequently to maintain its appearance, and generally requires repainting approximately every three years.
Why choose wall covering over painted surface?
Modern wall coverings contain aesthetic appeal which is unmatchable with painted surfaces.
Listed below are some uses of painted surfaces to achieve various states as opposed to the use of wall coverings:

PropertiesHow To Choose A Roof For Your Building by mearsk(op): 12:31pm On Mar 19, 2015
Top of the morning to you, do you know that the roofing sheet is the outermost layer on the roof of a building? Sometimes it is self-supported, but mostly generally supported by an underlying structure.
A building's roofing sheet provides shelter from the natural elements, the outer layer of a roof shows great variation dependent upon availability of material and the nature of the supporting structure.
Those types of roofing materials which are commercially available range from natural products such as thatch and slate to commercially produced products such as tiles and polycarbonate sheeting. Roofing materials may be placed on top of a secondary water-resistant material called underlayment. From natural materials like slate and wood, to manmade products such as asphalt, sheet metal, and plastic polymers; there are more types and styles of roofing to choose from today than ever before. While each has its advantages and shortcomings, they all can add a distinctive design element to your home. So which one is right for you?

What to Look for in a Roof

There are many factors to consider when selecting a roof including:
• How long will it last?
• Does it hold up during natural disasters such as heavy storms?
• Is it too heavy for the existing roof framing?
• Does the roof have enough slope?
• Will the look complement the style of the house?
• Are the materials eco-friendly?
• And finally, how much does it cost?

PropertiesTypes Of Staircase (part 2) by mearsk(op): 2:11pm On Mar 04, 2015
It’s another beautiful mid-week, I hope you all had fun this past weekend, I myself had too much of sugar to eat, so throughout this week I am doing a sugar free diet…(seriously o)
While you are still pondering on that, take a look at the continuation from where we stopped last week on different types of staircases.
Enjoy as you view their pictures.
Another type of staircase is the Winder Stairs, they are the stairs with a turn by 90 and 180 degrees. In terms of design staircases of this type possess soft and flowing lines which underline their beauty, and such staircases look evidently intriguing as if inviting you to go up the radial stairs. They can be in form of single or double winder.

Single Winder Stairs
Single Winder Stairs are stairs with a turn by 90 degrees. Winder treads may change their position in the flight from its beginning and up to its end. However it is worth mentioning that the staircases with winder treads located at the beginning of the flight are more convenient than those with winder treads located at the end of the flight. This is because of winder treads located at the beginning of the flight are well within view from below, and it is handier to maneuver with things when you carry them onto the next floor.

PropertiesTypes Of Staircases by mearsk(op): 4:30pm On Feb 23, 2015
Hello my dear wonderful readers I hope the first day of the week is going smoothly so far. Still in the spirit of the love month let’s discuss something beautiful such as a staircase; I have come across pictures of beautiful staircases so I decided to share with you.
Let’s discuss about various existing types of staircases just in case you are planning to build your own apartment.
The form of a staircase determines its type; staircases can be of different forms such as: straight flights, swinging flights, arched flights and spiral flights.
When you want to choose a staircase the following things should be taken into account:
• Designation of the staircase (front or supporting)
• Intensity of usage
• The form of the place allocated for the staircase construction.
It should be remembered that the area occupied by the staircase is usually excluded from the usable space of the house. Also the form and location of the staircase have a direct impact on convenience and functional usage of the staircase this is why you should carefully approach the choice.
Let us discuss their various forms:
Staircases with Straight flight
The most simple in terms of design, manufacture and installation is the staircase with straight flight.
This group of staircases with straight flights is perhaps the most popular. The presence of straight flights makes them convenient, functional and straight. They are also grouped into Straight stairs, Quarter Landing Stairs, and Half Landing Stairs.

Straight Stairs
It is convenient and functional, easy to go up and down and also to carry things on to the next floor.

PropertiesWhat Single Women Want In Real Estate by mearsk(op): 1:23pm On Feb 17, 2015
Times are changing and the real estate market needs to make sure it changes along with it. A generation ago families and single men were a prime target for real estate agents.
As society changes more women than ever are gainfully employed, single women are quickly becoming a unique force in the real estate market. From singletons in their 20’s to divorcees in their 40’s, single women are looking to buy and they have unique demands.
Single women are a growing population in Nigeria, as many as 1 in 5 home sales are to single women, not to mention that twice as many single women purchase homes in comparison to single men. Many reasons come into play; societal changes, economic shifts, changes in Nigerian family structure, and the increase of women in the workforce.

SO WHAT DO SINGLE WOMEN WANT?
Single women home buyers create a new list of demands, it is up to real estate agents to answer to their calls. This list sums up the qualities most single women prefer in their homes:
• Most like to spend not more than ₦300,000 for rent.
• Some usually Prefer two bedrooms or more.
• Some will compromise size and cost to get other amenities.
• Many desire security and safe neighborhoods with a strong community feel.
• They also look for close proximity to stores, shopping, and fitness centers.

A singleton prefers energetic communities, with plenty of activities, amenities, security and close-knit neighborhoods. Smaller spaces are not a problem for those living alone. To some, older homes would be a perfect fit as they are generally lesser in price.
These are just a few of my observations, please do have a nice day.

PropertiesThe Right Foundation For Your Building by mearsk(op): 3:09pm On Jan 16, 2015
Hello people, it feels so good to be amongst the living this year, for those of you who had New Year resolutions I hope you are already living up to it. As for me I do not set New Year resolutions I just try to be better than before and correct mistakes I have made in the past. Anyway moving on to what we are going to talk about today, its information that might be useful to you when building your house , as for me am holding this one tight because sometimes our so called building contractors make errors and it doesn’t help matters when we don’t know much about these things.
There are different types of foundations, also your type of building, nature of the soil and environmental conditions are the major determinants of the type of foundation you will use for your building.

Here are a few types of foundations and their uses;
• Strip foundation-This is the most common type, it is mainly used where you have strong soil base and non-waterlogged areas. Most small buildings of just a floor are constructed with this type of foundation .Depending on the structural engineer’s recommendation, the depth of your foundation could be from 600mm to 1200mm mostly for small scale buildings . When the soil is excavated, a level at which the concrete will settle evenly is established, then concrete is poured this may be from 150mm(6”) thick to 450mm(18”) thick depending also on building after that block is set round the trenches at the center of foundation ,the foundation usually follows the block lines. The blocks are then laid to d.p.c level before another concrete is poured on top, this is the German or oversite concrete. This type seems to be the cheapest.

Like human beings plants breathe too, they are an important part of our life and the earth. Though our earth has lots of species in plants but there are some plants among them which increase our home’s charm. Such plants do need care, timely water and sufficient sunlight.

Tropical species grow naturally under tropical canopy and prefer low sunlight hence they are good to keep in your living room, bedroom or any other room in the house.

Tropical foliage plants are durable for homes or offices. Some of them absorb harmful rays and provide a soothing element. Some of the tropical species which we can found easily are as follows:

PropertiesChoosing The Right Paint Colour For Your House by mearsk(op): 2:20pm On Nov 26, 2014
Good day to you, am so happy it’s mid-week and the weekend is just by the corner. Ok so two nights ago, I visited a friend of mine at his place, on getting inside his living room the sight of it took my breath away, it was completely stunning, the colour combinations were awesome, I can’t really explain the concept to which he combined beautiful colours of orange, grey, purple, and white, all I know is I saw all these colours in one room combined with beautiful works of art placed at strategic locations on the wall. So after i witnessed this I was inspired to do some research on interior paintings so I can share them with you.
These are some of the points which I have learnt on how to choose the right paint colors for your home:

Focus on details: Depending on the size and complexity of your home, you may want to choose two, three, or as many as six colors. In addition to color for your siding, select accent colors for shutters, doors, window sashes etc . But be careful because too many colors may overwhelm your house. Too few can also make your house seem flat and uninteresting.

PropertiesBuilding A Home From A Salary Of N40,000 (part 2) by mearsk(op): 12:23pm On Nov 18, 2014
After having completed your building to the German Floor level from part one(If you didn’t see part one click here:http://www.eazyhc.com.ng/blog/do-you-know-you-can-build-your-house-from-a-salary-of-n-40000/) I will be giving you information on how to get the superstructure phase of the project done (i.e. from the German floor to the roof beam).
Just like we stated in part one, all you need is determination and focus, and before you know it will all be done.
From the German floor to the roof level you are going to use 6” (6 inches) blocks; this is just sufficient to withstand the load that will be on the building.
From a carefully calculated estimate, N640,000 (Six Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira) is sufficient to move the above 2 bedroom bungalow from the German floor to the roof beam level in the absence of wastage.

PropertiesAvoid Being Cheated; Know How To Calculate Number Of Bags Of Cement Required For by mearsk(op): 1:11pm On Oct 27, 2014

Articles

It’s a fresh new week and since it’s Monday, Let’s talk about serious technical stuff.

In this article, I will give you the secret on how to estimate the number of bags of cement that would be consumed in the strip foundation for a simple project of a room, using the plan shown above.

In building projects, most owners don’t have an idea on how their materials are being utilized on site. This eventually gives the building Engineer an edge to make money off materials that will be used during the project.
One of the common materials the building Engineer easily makes money from is cements.

PropertiesTips On Moving With The Kids by mearsk(op): 4:13pm On Dec 12, 2013
As the year has come to an end some of us already have our move to a new house planned for this month of December.

Have in mind that moving is a very difficult phase especially when the kids are involved, this is because many kids thrive on familiarity and routine, so as you consider a move weigh the benefits of that move against the comfort that the already established surroundings, school, and social life have given your kids.

A decision to move may be caused by different reasons. The decision to move might however be out of your hands probably due to a job transfer or financial issues, even if you’re not happy about the move try to maintain a positive attitude about it because parents’ moods and attitude often have a great effect on the kids.

PREPARING THE KIDS FOR THE MOVE
The most important way of preparing kids for a move is discussing it over with them. Try to give them as much information about the move as possible and answer all questions they ask truthfully. Also involving them in the planning as much as possible makes them feel like participants in the house-hunting process or school search. This can make the change feel less like it is being forced on them. If the property you are moving to is close by then take them to visit the site and neighborhood.

MOVING WITH TODDLERS

Kids under the age of 6 can be the easiest to move as they barely understand the changes involved but still your guidance is crucial.

Here are some tips on easing transition for young children.

Keep explanations clear and simple.
Use a story to explain the move through toys, furniture or acting it out
When you pack your toddler's toys in boxes, make sure to explain that you aren't throwing them away.
Hold off on getting rid of your child's old bedroom furniture, which may provide a sense of comfort in the new house. It might even be a good idea to arrange furniture in a similar way in the new bedroom
Avoid making other big changes during the move, like toilet training or advancing a toddler to a bed from a crib.
Arrange for your toddler or preschooler to stay with a babysitter on moving day.
·

MOVING WITH TEENS
It is common for teens to rebel actively against a move. This is because your teen has probably invested a considerable energy in a particular social group or might be involved in a romantic relationship. A move might mean that the teen might miss a long awaited event like prom.

It's particularly important to let teens know that you want to hear their concerns and that you respect them. It's important to suggest that the move can serve as rehearsal for future changes, like college or a new job. However, also be sure to let them know that you hear their concerns.

After the move consider planning a visit to the old community if it’s feasible. Also see if the teen can return for events such as prom.

If you’re moving midway through a school year, you may want to consider letting the older teen stay with a friend or relative in the old location if that’s possible.

SOME TIPS TO MAKE YOUR MOVE EASIER

Prepare the kids for what to expect.

Let the kids help you pack.

Have a goodbye party.

Don't rush yourself.

Take the kids' concerns seriously.

Time your move.

Pack a special bag of favorite toys and activities.

Label boxes of kids' stuff very clearly.

Make it an adventure.

A move can present many challenges, but good things also come from this kind of change. Your family might grow closer and you may learn more about each other by going through it together.

Have a nice day.

As we all know the August break is over and the rainy season is back again, during these periods we will notice that a lot of dampness occurs around us. Have you ever wondered at one point in time why that your black jacket that has been hanging in your closet suddenly grew moulds?

Well this is one of the results of dampness in the home. Dampness also occurs when there is an exposure of water or leakage due to underground water pipes etc.

Damp houses encourage the growth of fungus and moulds on walls, doors and furniture.

Damp homes require regular maintenance to keep the home in a good state. If your water pipes, rain water pipes, storage pipes and other pipes are giving problems then you need to get them fixed or else they would create unnecessary problems; ruining your walls and giving birth to health problems.

Major Cause of Dampness

Another major cause of dampness in the homes has been seen as condensation. As every home uses water and there are tiny droplets in air which are usually invisible. When the air gets colder it can’t hold the moisture and the tiny drops appears which is known as condensation.

Due to condensation, the moisture takes the form of dampness near the walls and on the floor. The factors that cause dampness due to moisture are cooking, bathing, washing and drying of clothes. When walls and floors get damp moulds appear on the wall surfaces and gradually multiply which can be seen on other things and clothes as well. This can further lead to health hazards such as asthma and other respiratory ailments.

I have been thinking of what to write about in order to make up for my long absence, then after battling my writer’s block I decided not to chew on my biro anymore and I did what we all do in the exam hall lol; I looked up to the heavens (my living room ceiling in this case) and eureka!! There it was the light illuminating from my ceiling.

Lighting your home is necessary but lighting with different kinds of lighting arrangements has become a trend and an important part of home décor. Lighting your house does not suggest illuminating your home with unnecessary light fixtures everywhere as some do, if done accurately and precisely, it can help express your mood or style and accentuate the beauty of your living space.

The term lighting refers to the useful energy output of a system consisting of light sources, fixtures to support them in appropriate locations, wiring channels to activate the light sources and the convenient electrical controls.
