During the vice-presidential debate in Abuja today, Peter Obi talked about making Nigeria get to where China is today and doing business with them. But Twitter users blast him for him for saying so, because if Nigeria can execute all it's corrupt politicians which China actually did, Atiku won't for contesting for president because he is one of the Notorious corrupted Politicians in the Nigerian history.

PoliticsDebate: You Cannot Shut Economy To Fight Corruption – Peter Obi by Mediahelm(op): 8:48pm On Dec 14, 2018
The Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised the anti-corruption war of the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government, insisting that it killed jobs in the process.

Obi said this at the Vice-Presidential debate organised by the Broadcast Organisation of Nigeria and the Nigeria Elections Debate Group.

He argued that war against graft cannot be a government policy but a means to an end.

The former governor said before the current anti-graft campaign, Nigeria had more jobs and opportunities but the economy took a nosedive when the anti-corruption war started

Obi said, “It is not that you cannot fight corruption but you can fight it more aggressively while addressing economic issues. For example, in 2015, unemployment was 24 percent. Today, it is 40 per cent. In 2015, we attracted $21bn in Foreign Direct Investment but we attracted only $12bn last year. Our GDP was $500bn in 2015 while per capita was $2, 500 today it is under $1, 900.

“If you look at our stock market, we have lost over N2tn in one year. So, that is not a policy. You’re just fighting corruption, you are not creating jobs. You cannot shut down your shop and be chasing criminals.”

PoliticsBuhari’s Minister Shittu Vows To Work Against Oyo APC Candidate by Mediahelm(op): 7:25am On Dec 13, 2018
The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has said he will work against the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, Adebayo Adelabu, in 2019 elections.

Shittu, who was disqualified from participating in the governorship primary election in the state, said there would not be peace in the party without restitution.

The minister joins Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun; and his Imo state counterpart, Rochas Okorocha, who had threatened to work against the party’s governorship candidates in their states.

Recall that the National Working Committee of the APC raised a Peace and Reconciliation Committee for each of the six geopolitical zones to reconcile aggrieved members ahead of the 2019 generals elections.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, Shittu accused the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole; and Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, of being responsible for his exclusion from the party primary election.

He said, “I will be a bastard to be defrauded in a party primary election and behave as if I am a slave.

“They asked us to pay N22m (for nomination form) and didn’t advertise any condition other than what was provided in the constitution.

“After we have been screened and certified, the chairman of our party unilaterally and in violation of the constitution got me out of the way so that they could impose a newcomer on the party. Somebody who was barely two months in the APC.

“You cannot expect me at my level to support such candidate. I believe I gave enough warning. Before you talk of reconciliation, you must talk of restitution.”

The minister said he would pursue his case in court to the end despite warning from the APC to members to withdraw their cases in court.

He added, “As for me, I don’t recognise the candidate of APC. I am in court and I believe I will triumph over those who were less than intelligent to foist a stranger on our party in Oyo State.

“Of course they had the opportunity and they missed it and the party will certainly pay for it.”

He said he would not buckle under threats of expulsion or any sanction by the APC.

“I have passed that stage where any party will be threatening me. The loss is not mine but that of the people of Oyo State who deserve the best in governance.

“We are not going to beg them, they can go to blazes. If justice is not done, there will not be peace. If people will not talk about restitution, we will not talk about reconciliation. Somebody felt he had money from shadowy source and you sold the ticket to him,” he said.

Shittu attributed the crisis in the party to the APC NWC, saying the President as the leader of the party had no extraordinary powers under the party’s constitution to overrule what the national executives of the party decided.

According to him, the President is giving the party a free hand to conduct its affairs unlike what was obtainable in the Peoples Democratic Party under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He said, “Under Obasanjo as President, the NEC became a toothless bulldog. He was the one calling the shots.

“I won’t blame him, I know he sympathises with all of us that have been unfairly treated.

“In the circumstance of nurturing a better political party, I don’t think Buhari would have insisted on a particular cause of action. The temporary loss is not mine but that of the people of Oyo State who deserve the best in governance.”

The minister lamented that some leaders in APC were worse than some PDP members they were accusing of impunity and corruption.

Christianity EtcMan Drowns During Baptism In Ghana (photo) by Mediahelm(op): 8:18pm On Dec 12, 2018
A 20-year-old man has drowned while being baptised by a pastor in a river south of Ghana’s capital, Accra.

In a video circulating on social media, Yaw Kyeremeh is seen stationed at the banks of River Densu together with a pastor who immersed him in the water.

Then after brief prayers he was immersed a second time but he did not emerge from the waters.

Accra Regional Police Command spokeswoman Afia Tenge told the BBC a junior pastor had been arrested at the scene while police were still searching for the head pastor of the church involved in the baptism.

The drowning, which happened on Sunday, has led many people to question why a life should be lost during a religious ritual.

The man’s family is quoted by local media as saying that it does not blame anyone for the drowning.

Police said the 20-year-old’s body was in a mortuary, and an autopsy still needed to be done before it was given to the family for burial.

PoliticsPDP Looted Our Destiny, Prospects, Says Fashola by Mediahelm(op): 7:00am On Dec 11, 2018
The Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola SAN, on Monday blamed the Peoples Democratic Party for abandoned Federal Government projects across the country.

He stated this while inspecting the building project of the Federal Secretariat, Awka, Anambra State.

He described corruption during the PDP era as monumental, adding, “They looted our collective destiny, prospects, jobs and so on.

“That’s why the masses are suffering today. That’s why there are no jobs. But we (APC) are trying to bring back smiles on the faces of Nigerians.”

He said the 18-kilometre Umunya axis of the Onitsha/Enugu Expressway would be completed in May 2019, while the Federal Secretariat, Awka, the state capital, would be completed in the first quarter of next year.

Fashola said the President Muhammadu Buhari government inherited those projects because past governments failed to complete them as a result of corruption.

“They awarded the contract without paying contractors and when you don’t pay contractors, you create problems down the labour ladder.

“For instance, the contract for this federal secretariat was awarded in 2012 by the previous administration without making funds available for its completion. If the money meant for it was not stolen, it would have been completed before now.

“We are bringing back what was denied the people in the past to them; that’s the difference between a development administration and a corrupt regime”, the minister stated.

CrimeKidnappers Kill Taiwo Akinyemi, Rufus Giwa, Polytechnic Lecturer by Mediahelm(op): 6:11am On Dec 11, 2018
One of the four victims of last week’s kidnapping in Ondo State has reportedly been killed by the abductors six days after they were seized by gunmen.

The victim, a lecturer at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, identified as Taiwo Akinyemi, reportedly died on Sunday.

Four persons, including the deceased, were kidnapped by suspected Fulani gunmen in Amurin village on the Akure-Owo Expressway in Owo Local Government Area of the state last Tuesday.

The three other victims, who are members of staff of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo have been released.

The corpse of the 52-year-old Akinyemi was said to have been found in a bush tied to a tree on Sunday evening. It was learnt that the deceased was killed by the abductors for the inability of his family to pay on time the ransom demanded by the abductors.

Following the development, lecturers and students of the polytechnic on Monday held a procession on the campus as a mark of respect for the late Akinyemi.

The state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, was also on the campus of the school to commiserate with the academic community, and described the death of the lecturer as unfortunate.

Addressing journalists on the death of Akinyemi, the Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics, RUGIPO chapter, Mr Chris Olowolade, described the incident as sad and unfortunate.

He explained that the union had entered into negotiation with the kidnappers in order to secure Akinyem’s release, but “we lost him to the kidnappers and we received his corpse yesterday (Sunday).”

He added, “The kidnappers placed a ransom of N100m on him, which nobody could afford, but they reduced it to N7m after two days, and later grudgingly asked us to come up with N500,000.

“The money was taken to them, and the person who took it to them was directed by the kidnappers to where he should drop the money. They asked him to stop, reverse and move, just to confirm that he was the actual person bringing the money.

“But after some hours, they called that the man bringing the money should come back that they didn’t see it; only for us to be called by the Rector yesterday (Sunday) to go and identify a corpse.

“We rushed to the morgue and discovered that it was his (Akinyemi’s) corpse. He was tied to a tree with his clothes, and his remains were left in the bush. The body was recovered by the police and deposited in the morgue; he was treated badly before he was killed.”

The governor, while speaking to the staff and students of the institution, explained that the state government and the security operatives made attempts to rescue the deceased

He said, “It is unfortunate that the man couldn’t return home alive. The incident (kidnap) happened some five minutes after I passed through the place and I had to deploy some security men in my convoy to the place to rescue the victims.

“These kidnappers have become more daring and desperate; this is because we are moving towards the festive period; but the state police command has assured us that they will not limit their operation to stop and search only, but that they will also increase road patrol.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph, who confirmed the killing of the kidnapped lecturer, described his death as unfortunate, adding that all the other victims had regained their freedom.

Joseph said men of the state police command were on the trail of the kidnappers, but noted that no arrest had been made yet.

PoliticsWe Raided Orji Son’s Apartment, Not Atiku’s —EFCC by Mediahelm(op): 5:59am On Dec 11, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crime Commission on Monday described the allegations that its operatives raided the Abuja home of Atiku Abubakar’s sons, as nothing but lies.

The EFCC said in a series of tweets that detectives only searched the house where the son of a former Governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Orji, resides.

Atiku’s two children, Mustapha and Aliyu, live in the same compound as Orji’s son
.

But the camp of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Abubakar Atiku, on Monday described the raid by the operatives of the EFCC on his sons’ apartment in a building at Maitama, Abuja as an act of intimidation against him.

Atiku who spoke through the Head, the Atiku Media Office, Mr. Paul Ibe, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said EFCC conducted the search on the apartment where Aliyu and Mustapha live on Saturday.

Ibe added that they found nothing incriminating on Atiku’s sons.

According to him, the search was an act of intimidation on Atiku as, according to him, officials of the Muhammadu Buhari government perceived the PDP presidential candidate as their ‘tormentor-in-chief.’

Ibe said, “After having arrested the son of Theodore Orji, they asked him to lead them to the residence of Atiku’s children. He said he did not know them. The EFCC searched the house.

According to the EFCC, Orji’s son, Ogbonna, and his friend, Kelvin Ilonah, were arrested as part of investigations into the ex governor, who is alleged to have embezzled billions of naira during his eight-year tenure as governor.

The EFCC said, “This is nothing but another tales by moonlight. It is in the news that we have been investigating the former Abia State governor, Senator Theodore Orji, over alleged N27bn laundering. In the course of investigation, we discovered that he laundered part of the money through his sons.

“We have been on the trail of some of the purchases made by his sons, including the cars the boys allegedly bought.

“Last Friday, we traced one of the cars to a night club in Abuja. In order not to cause panic, we waited until the business of the club was over and when the owner of the suspected car came to take off, we arrested him and his friend who has a similar brand of car. That was about 5am on Saturday, December 8, 2018.

“The two boys we arrested were Ogbonna Orji, 32, and Kelvin Ilonah. While Orji’s car, a Range Rover is valued at about N100m, Ilonah’s car, also a Range Rover, is valued at about N35m.

“In the course of further interrogation, the two boys led us to their apartment, three flats, and documents retrieved from the apartment showed it was rented for N13m each per annum.

“Another brand new Prado, a 2017 model, was recovered from the boys in the compound. The two boys in question gave useful information to the commission which is helping in further investigation.”
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement described the raid as unleashing of violence on Atiku’s sons by what he called the Buhari Presidency-controlled EFCC.

He added that the raid was vicious, outrageous, dirty and reprehensible.

PDP spreading fake news, says Presidency

Meanwhile, the Presidency has dismissed as untrue the report that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration ordered a raid on the home of the sons of Atiku.

It also described as “fake news”, another report that the bank accounts of his running mate, Peter Obi, and those of his family members were frozen.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, the Presidency urged Nigerians to ignore the PDP, which it claimed was now known for spreading fake news.

The Presidency stated,
“The story about the raid ‘ordered by Buhari-led government ‘on the home of PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s sons and the fairy tale on the alleged blockage of the bank accounts of the running mate, Peter Obi and his family are both untrue, and should be dismissed as just another manifestation of the PDP’s growing expertise in fake news.

“Nigerians must be becoming wary by now, of a political party with absolutely nothing to offer in the coming elections and has instead, transformed into a knight in shining armour, slaying the truth.

“In this so-called transformation, the PDP has changed into nothing but to a ceaselessly flowing stream of fake news.

“It is impossible to find in Nigeria today, anyone propagating fake news more than the PDP.

“Our advice to Nigerians is: ignore them.”

CrimeMan Raises Alarm After Spotting A Civilian Man Roaming With AK-47 In Abuja by Mediahelm(op): 1:47pm On Dec 05, 2018
A Nigerian man, Olumide Olaniyan, has raised alarm after spotting another man believed to be a civilian, pictured above, roaming the streets in Nyanya, Abuja with an AK47 hung on his body. Read what Olumide wrote below

I was driving along Mararaba-Nyanya road this morning. I saw this man with a gun that looks like AK-47 or an automatic gun, I initially thought he is a security personnel, but, his dress, shoes and overall shabby look suggests otherwise.

I was tempted to go ask him about his ID card and why he was such a psychological violence to onlookers. Then, I remembered Maama Sunde's counsel those days I used to do student activism at the University of Bariga, "ma se subolation si oro oloro, [don't interfere in other people's matter, face yours]".

I felt that it is my business to ensure that there is safety and security in the land. I felt like questioning this dangerous looking man, on behalf of Nigeria. But, my sense talked to my brain, they both forced me to drive on. I will never know if the man is a vigilante, or a state security personnel. That certainly was not a Dane gun. That clothing was not a security personnel uniform. An undercover agent won't expose himself with an automatic gun in public. Our country is currently a fragile state, no onewho isn't a security personnel, should be allowed to move around with arms which may distress others.

Could this man be one of those so called Malian herdsmen that have flooded Tangaza LGA and other areas in Sokoto state? Nigeria needs to protect its territories from (possible) internal and external aggression. When people just walk along, unbothered with this kind of an uninformed and ununiformed man in their midst, it means we are drifting towards Hobbesian Democracy...

TravelWoman Narrates How A Kind Uber Driver Saved Her And Her Boyfriend by Mediahelm(op): 11:26am On Dec 04, 2018
A lady has narrated how an Uber driver came to the aid of her and her boyfriend when they were left stranded on 3rd Mainland Bridge by 3 am.

Precious said she had been to Ikorodu to make a delivery and had to return to Ajah very late. As there was no public transport available at that time, she called her boyfriend to come pick her. But as soon as he did, they were stopped by some officers of the Nigeria police and accused of all sorts.

The police then asked them to drive to Yaba from where they were extorted and released at about 2 am. While going home, they ran out of fuel and were stranded on Third Mailand bridge.

Fortunately, an Uber driver driving by stopped, took them to a fuel station to buy fuel, paid for it, and drove them back to their car on the bridge. He even refused to provide his account number to get a refund.

The lady took to Instagram to share the story along with a photo of the kind driver.

She wrote of the driver:

God bless you endlessly sir. You are a God sent.

PoliticsI’ll Provide Uninterrupted Electricity – Ezekwesili by Mediahelm(op): 10:51am On Dec 03, 2018
The presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, has promised to provide uninterrupted supply of electricity in the country in the first four years if elected President next year.

In a statement on Sunday, Ezekwesili said stable electricity would aid business growth in Nigeria.
She said, “From 1999 till date, all the projections made by successive governments to grow the supply of electricity to Nigerians, to either 6,000MW, 10,000MW or 20,000MW, have not been realised. The citizens’ desire and willingness to pay an appropriate price of electricity consumed is seen in generators of all shapes and sizes and how much they pay to operate and service these machines.

“The low power availability from the national grid has meant that corporate entities have to divert a large amount of funds from their core productive areas of focus to this critical area of reliable power supply. The price of this is paid in not being competitive and great loss of production capacities, which further impoverishes the populace.

“Our vision is to provide sustainable, affordable and uninterrupted electricity supply to all Nigerian towns and villages, starting with Nigerian cities. Our vision is to ensure that the Nigerian electricity supply industry becomes fully functional, vibrant and employs hundreds of thousands of young Nigerians, in both the on-grid and off-grid segments.”

The former Minister of Education said the challenges causing underperformance in the power sector would be addressed when she emerged as President.

CrimeEFCC Impostor Jailed For 8 Years (photo) by Mediahelm(op): 7:36am On Dec 03, 2018
Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has convicted and sentenced one Babakura Mustapha to eight years imprisonment for the offence of impersonation and obtaining money under false pretence.

The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 132 Penal Code Law Cap 102, Laws of Borno State. Mustapha was arraigned on June 6, 2018 and pleaded “not guilty”.

In the course of the trial, the prosecution led by Khalid Sanusi presented three witnesses and tendered some documents, which were marked Exhibits A1-A4.

Mustapha allegedly posed as a staff of the EFCC with the name “Mr. Kola” and in the assumed capacity presented himself to one Mamman Bukar as the operative handling “a case” purportedly against Bukar.

Count one of the charge reads: “That you, BABAKURA MUSTAPHA sometime in June, 2017 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable court, falsely impersonate a staff of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and in such assumed character; you presented yourself to Mamman Alh. Bukar, bearing a fictitious name Mr. Kola and pretended to be handling his case in Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 132 Penal Code Law Cap 102,Laws of Borno State.”

Delivering judgment, Justice Kumaliya found him guilty and convicted him accordingly. During allocotus, counsel for the convict pleaded with the court to temper Justice with mercy as the convict was a first time offender and had a family to cater for.

Sanusi on his part urged the court to invoke Section 365 of the CPC as to make the convict pay the sum of N80, 000 as compensation to the victim (PW1) in the case. Justice Kumaliya sentenced the convict on the first count of the charge to one year imprisonment or an option of fine of N50,000. On count two, the convict was sentenced to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine.

“The convict should pay the sum of N100, 000 for impersonation and N800,000 to the complainant,” Justice Kumaliya ruled.

SportsTyson Fury, Wilder Match Ends In Controversial Draw by Mediahelm(op): 10:07am On Dec 02, 2018
Britain’s heavyweight boxing fighter Tyson Fury endured two brutal knockdowns by WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder to earn a controversial draw with his American opponent.

In one of the most thrilling heavyweight contests for years, the Briton was floored in the ninth round and brutally dropped in the 12th, somehow regaining his feet to survive for two minutes, the BBC reported.

Fury had shown plenty of the evasive, counter-punching skill set which made his name before his 30-month spell away from the sport and he enjoyed joy during the middle rounds at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

But in the 12th he lay motionless after a savage combination, barely making the count to see out the contest.

Wilder thought he had won, after 36 minutes of a thrilling boxing action. But the judges shocked him by their decisions.

In assessments that drew derisions on Twitter, Judge Alejandro Rochin of the United States scored the fight 115-111 in favor of Wilder, judge Robert Tapper of Canada scored it 114-112 in favor of Fury and judge Phil Edward of England scored it a 113-113 draw.

“This decision is a joke, Alejandro Rochin better never work another day in his life again in boxing,” Showtime boxing analyst Paulie Malignaggi said after the bout.

“I can’t tell you why the result is way it is. I don’t even know what to tell you,” Rochin added.

Both Wilder and Fury spoke of a rematch after the encounter, meaning Anthony Joshua will have to wait.
