Crime300 Kuje Prison Inmates Get Christmas Haircut by Mediahelm(op): 4:56pm On Dec 25, 2018
Rev. Jolly Nyame, former Taraba governor, on Tuesday joined his excited colleagues to celebrate stylish Christmas haircuts offered to 300 inmates of Kuje Prison, FCT.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the free haircut was offered by the National Association of Barbers and Salon Employers of Nigeria (NABSEN), during a Christmas visit to the Prison.

The outreach was undertaken in collaboration with Fades and Bangs Global, an Abuja-based international barbing outfit, and Maria Luna, the Deputy Ambassador of Venezuela.

A NAN correspondent, who covered the outreach, reports that the inmates also received blankets, beverages, among other items.

Nyame, who did not require a haircut at the time, watched with excitement as his colleagues danced to the deafening music after the haircuts and carvings that saw some spotting hairstyles like “punk’’, “Afro’’, “Steve Wonder’’ and “curls’’.

The former Taraba governor, who is serving a 14-year jail term, lauded NABSEN for the kindness, describing it as “touching’’.

“They (prison inmates), are very happy; they are looking so beautiful and radiant on Christmas day,’’ Nyame told NAN.

He said that the NABSEN initiative was “very excellent’’, adding that his colleagues would “always remember this show of concern’’.

“There is a rush for the service. Everyone wants to come out for the haircut. It is difficult to control them. There is a rumble inside the yard. I have never seen the inmates this happy since I came here,’’ he said.

Earlier, Mr Musa Mantu, Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), of NABSEN, had told Mr Innocent Onoja, Controller of the prison, that the gesture was to “make the inmates look and feel good on Christmas day’’.

“We want the inmates to know that we remember them and care for them.

“We also want to encourage them and let them understand that being in prison is not the end of life; we want them to feel positive and be inspired by the prison experience to succeed in life after serving out their terms,’’ he said.

Mantu, son of former Deputy Senate President Nasir Mantu, promised that NABSEN would make the visit an annual event and strive to get more items toward a better life for the prison inmates.

Onoja, in a response, thanked NABSEN for the gesture which he described as “very encouraging and good for the season’’.

“I am particularly appreciative of the blankets because of the cold weather; we need to keep the inmates warm and in good condition and spirit,’’ he said.

Onoja said that the facility sometimes face difficulties in providing enough mattresses, mats, toiletries, disinfectants and blankets, and shall be happy if there was some support from outside.

Speaking to NAN, Mr Chibueze Awuzie, National Deputy President of NABSEN, said that the outreach was to give a sense of belonging to the inmates, adding that the free hair cut was to “make them look beautiful at Christmas’’.

“In the prison, there is no opportunity for a good haircut with after-shave and special hair treatment. We are here to offer these services to them,’’ he said

Awuzie advised the inmates not to feel abandoned by the outside society, and promised to make the outreach more regular so as to reach the inmates through the barbing profession.

He challenged Nigerians to show love to those in prison, saying that such affection would give them hope and encourage them to understand that their current situation was just a passing phase.

The barber said that the association had 10 million members and was the leading Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME), with the highest number of employees and branches in the country.

Luna, the Venezuelan envoy, who also spoke with NAN, said that the Embassy offered to procure blankets for the prison inmates as part of efforts to assist the vulnerable members of the society.

She commended the prison authorities for keeping the facility “very neat and habitable’’, and expressed the readiness to work with organisations committed to help the poor.

Luna said that she had equally visited many rural communities in Osun, Ondo, Owerri, Ibadan, Lagos and Ekiti and donated food, toiletries, school kits and medicines for malaria and typhoid.

The “Provost-General’’ of the prison inmates, who gave his name as “Bekke’’, said that the barbers had “made our Christmas’’ by the visit.

“This is the first time we are getting this quality haircut here. It is a good innovation. For a corporate organisation to offer this service free is very laudable. It is fun and very encouraging.

“Some corporate organisations come with food and other materials, but this is a different and wonderful dimension. We want other organisations to emulate such kindness,’’ he said.

The “Deputy Provost-General’’ of the prison inmates, Abdullahi Mohammed, also thanked the visitors for the gesture, saying that his colleagues were “very excited’’ to have the free hair cut.

“There are people that have been here for more than 15 years and cannot remember when last they had a smooth haircut. There is no doubt that this experience will be in their memories for a very long time,’’ he said.

Mohammed, from Nasarawa State, thanked NABSEN for the kindness and “for remembering prisoners’’, saying that he had never had such a smooth hair cut “in several years’’.

Another prison inmate, Mohammed Murtala, who had been in the prison for 14 years, described the barbing experience as “very smooth’’, and prayed God to bless NABSEN for the gesture.

NAN reports that the excited prisoners danced gleefully to the music blaring from the haircut venue, with some of them happy to “listen to sweet music after a long while’’.

BusinessMeet Mammy Ochefu The Woman Who Started Mammy Market In Soldiers Barracks by Mediahelm(op): 12:17pm On Dec 21, 2018
Did you know that mammy market was named after a woman called Mammy Ochefu? Yes yes! Every military barrack in Nigeria has a place called ‘mammy market’, a place close to the barracks, where soldiers’ interact and buy their daily needs. In 1955 at Enugu, the market was named

After Mammy Ochefu, the wife of late military Governor of defunct East-Central state, Col. Anthony Aboki Ochefu, where she sold a local non-alcoholic beverage called enyi to support her family.

Her husband initially declined as soldiers’ wives were known to be housewives. He later accepted for her to continue the business when she told him it was to support him and the family.

After taking a week break at home due to complaints from people that the drink attracted flies, pressure from her clients inspired a Lieutenant Colonel to build her a kiosk to make it more conducive. Her family was later posted out of Enugu to Abeokuta but Mammy continued

The business wherever they were
posted to while she added snacks that would interest the soldiers’. Interestingly, whenever her family was transferred to another state, she would hand over the business to women who were interested in it but asked that they retain the name.

Mammy registered her business as “Mammy Market” in 1971. By the time her husband retired, the business had grown into a supermarket and a transport business.

When her husband rose to become a military governor, Mammy was still going about her business. She joined him few months later due to pressure from people, leaving the business in the hands of four people.

The idea of Mammy market, which was started by Mammy Ochenfu in Enugu Army Barrack with one shilling in 1955, continues to grow with the country and whenever a barrack is built, a mammy market is built together with it. Through this initiative, Mammy Ochefu helped millions of

Nigerian women across the countries to be business owners. We celebrate this beautiful strong woman who defied all odds to create jobs for millions of women today.

Crime85-year-old Herbalist Arrested With Fresh Human Heart In Lagos (photo) by Mediahelm(op): 9:07am On Dec 21, 2018
Samuel Hunsu, an 85-year-old herbalist has been arrested by the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos State, in possession of fresh human heart.

The suspect was said to have been arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun State and the police alleged that the old man specialized in using human parts for money making rituals. Hunsu, however, claimed that the hearts were given to him by one Abiodun, who had earlier consulted him for money ritual.

His words: “Initially, I was consulted by Abiodun. He wanted me to prepare money charms making for him. When I told him what was required for the ritual, he promised to get them. I was surprised when I saw him with fresh human heart. When Abiodun eventually brought the heart, I asked him where he got it. He said that he removed it from a thief that was killed at Ijoko area of Ogun State.

Immediately he dropped the heart, he left and promised to come back. That was how I took the heart and preserved it with dry gin and chemical under my shrine, pending when the owner will come back. I don’t know Abiodun or where he lives. He told me that he came all the way from Kwara State.”
According to police, there had been reports that two people had died in the herbalist’s shrine. A police source added: “When we asked him, he claimed those two people died while receiving treatment. He said that he buried them in his shrine, rather than release them to their families. The following day, we went with a search warrant. It was during the search of the shrine that we discovered the heart kept in a plastic and buried in the shrine. We understand the heart had been with the herbalist for two weeks, but there was no sign of decomposing.”

CrimeBoko Haram Suspect Held In Lagos by Mediahelm(op): 12:32am On Dec 21, 2018
A man the police described as a notorious Boko Haram Commander was yesterday arrested in Lagos.

The suspect, Abdulmalik Umar, was said to have been responsible for the death of more than 200 people.

Umar, 39, was arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IG) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) around Mowe at a nurse’s house where he was receiving treatment for the bullet wounds he sustained during a recent gun battle with the police in Abuja.

It was gathered that the suspect, alleged to have masterminded the explosions at Nyanya and Kuje in Abuja in 2015, as well as several bank robberies in Ondo, Edo and other southern states, had fled Abuja three weeks ago when some of his gang members were apprehended.

A police source, who confirmed the arrest, disclosed that the nurse, who is said to be Umar’s sister, and her husband were also arrested for aiding and abetting criminality.

It was gathered that the head of the IRT, Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), and his men had been trailing the one-eyed Umar since he entered Lagos three weeks ago.

They eventually busted his hideout around 2pm yesterday.

The Nation gathered that the suspect led the gang that killed seven policemen at Gwagwalada, Abuja.

Their AK47 rifles were carted away. He was also alleged to be behind the killings of policemen at Lugbe and armed robbery at Galadimawa Roundabout, among others.

The source described Umar as an overall “commander” of bank robberies in the southern part of the country as well as mastermind of killings in Okene, Kogi State.

The source said: “He was also the one who brought all the bombs they used during the Nyanya and Kuje attacks in 2015. We have arrrsted some of his members who are in court now. They were the ones who gave us his details and since then we have been looking for him.

“He has one eye and is responsible for over 200 killings. We arrested four of his gang members three weeks ago in Abuja and recovered four AK47 rifles which they took from the policemen they killed at Gwagwalada.

“He escaped at that operation with gun wounds and fled to Lagos. We have been on his trail since then. He went to his sister’s house in Mowe to hide. His sister was treating him of the bullet wounds. We have arrested her and her husband too because they are accomplices.

“He was the Grand Commander of the attack and rescue operations of the Prison in Niger State early this year where he lost one of his eyes during the operation while over 100 prisoners escaped.”

Confirming Umar’s arrest, police spokesman Jimoh Moshood, an acting Deputy Commissioner said he would soon be paraded.

Moshood said: “It is true that he was arrested in Lagos. He fled Abuja with gunshot injury and was trailed to Lagos. We arrested some of his gang members three weeks ago and recovered weapons from them. They will be paraded soon.”

CrimeI Stayed With Policeman’s Corpse For Hours After Killing Him – Traditional Ruler by Mediahelm(op): 6:40am On Dec 15, 2018
Jonathan Tsekar, the traditional ruler of Tiv community in Opeji, in the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, has disclosed the events leading to the murder of a policeman attached to a police post in the community.

Tsekar reportedly killed the policeman, Gbenga Adeboyejo, a corporal, after a charcoal business deal between them went awry.

The ruler was said to have murdered Adeboyejo on a farm in the neighbourhood on November 27 and buried him with his phone.

Our correspondent learnt that the policeman lived in the community while his family is based in Ilorin, Kwara State.

It was gathered that the incident happened two days after he returned from a visit to his family in Ilorin.

Report also gathered that the deceased’s father, Joseph, became worried when he could not reach the corporal on the phone. So a case of missing person was reported at the Ogun State Police Command and investigation was commenced.

PUNCH learnt that Tsekar was arrested by detectives based on the information gathered from Joseph and some residents of the area.

Speaking with our correspondent during the week, 32-year-old Tsekar, who hails from Benue State, said Adeboyejo had on October 26 contracted him to produce charcoal for him, adding that the policeman paid him N97,000 out of the N150,000 they agreed on for the work.

After striking the business deal, Adeboyejo was said to have travelled to Ilorin where he spent two weeks. On his return on November 26, he reportedly met with Tsekar to know the progress of the production.

Tsekar recalled, “
On October 26, he (Adeboyejo) gave me N97,000 to help him cut wood to produce charcoal. I just started processing the wood when he told me he wanted to travel and that he would be back in two weeks’ time. By the time he came back, I was already done with some aspects of the production.

“Around 7pm on November 26, he came to my house and asked me to take him to the farm so he could see the progress of the production. I told him it was already late and that he should wait till the following day. He left in anger.”
The community leader explained that he and Adeboyejo went to the farm around 9am the next day, but the late policeman was not pleased with the work progress, complaining that the production was too slow.

Tsekar continued, “He said the wood ought to have been on the fire. I told him to be patient and that I needed more than two weeks to finish the work. He started shouting at me. I asked him to take it easy. When I noticed he was very annoyed, I told him to let us leave the farm. He felt I did not take him seriously, so he picked a log of wood to hit me.
“He hit me with it twice and as he wanted to hit me the third time, I blocked it with my hand and collected it from him. We started fighting. He picked another log and hit me again. I used the log I collected from him to defend myself.

“As I wanted to hit him with the wood, he tried to dodge and it landed on his head. He fell on the ground. After a while, I noticed he was not moving. I sat with him from that morning till around 7pm, thinking he would recover so that I could take him home because he did not know the route very well. When he did not recover, I dug the ground and buried him with his phone so that no one would trace the incident to me. I was afraid of being arrested. Since I got to the village in 2003, I was never arrested by the police for any crime. I am the head of Tiv community in Odeda.”
Tsekar stated that he and Adeboyejo had been working together for a long time, adding that he was supposed to collect a balance of N52,000 after completing the work.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, in a statement on the murder, had said that the suspect would be charged to court on completion of investigation at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran.

He said the deceased was reported missing on December 1 by his father, Joseph.

The statement read, “On December 1, Joseph Adeboyejo reported to the police that his son visited him in Ilorin and told him about the charcoal business he was doing with one leader of the Tiv community in Opeji village.

“He further stated that while the corporal was with him, he received a call from the said Tiv man informing him that his charcoal was ready, consequent upon which he left Ilorin to meet the man.

“The father said his son called him on the phone when he reached the man’s house but after some time, he couldn’t reach him or hear from him again.

“After serious investigation, the community leader was arrested. The suspect confessed to killing the police corporal by hitting him on the head with a heavy log in order not to refund the money he collected from the deceased.

“This is not only wicked and callous but also a superlative degree of effrontery because the suspect knows very well the status of the deceased.”
