In a statement it said Abiy Ahmed – who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 – had a special responsibility to see an end to the bloodshed.

Just a year after getting the prize for ending a long war with Eritrea, Mr Abiy sent troops to fight rebels in the northern Tigray region.

The war has forced millions from their homes. The government has been accused of blocking aid and there have been multiple allegations of atrocities being committed by all sides.

Mr Abiy’s spokesperson Billene Seyoum had previously said that the Nobel Peace Prize was not “a shackle for inaction when the country is threatened”.

The calls from the Committee are expected to increase the pressure to find a peaceful resolution for the war.


Mali coup crisis: UN Secretary General António Guterres says it’s “absolutely essential” for Mali’s military leaders to announce an acceptable timeline for civilian elections.

Mr Guterres said he was working with the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, and the African Union to create conditions that could allow Mali to adopt a reasonable position for a quick transition.

He said he also hoped to speak soon with the Malian government.

The Ecowas group of West African states has imposed tough sanctions on Mali after the military government announced a long delay to the elections originally planned for February.

This includes a range of trade sanctions and land and air border closures.

The European Union on Thursday also said it would impose sanctions on Mali following the move by Ecowas.

The ban was effected in December after a rise in Covid-19 cases attributed to the Omicron variant.

The cabinet has resolved that concert organisers will seek permission 10 days before the event.

The concert tickets will be sold online and the recommended capacity is 50% for indoor venues and 75% for outdoor.

Those attending concerts must show proof of vaccination. Theatres and cinema halls have also been allowed to reopen with 50% capacity.
