AjanleKoko:I don't this particular stat. serious. Different managers have different strategies for executing knockout games. Pep's about getting a favourable result away from home and finally seal it with a win at home. Even when we've played weak sides like Stuttgart, he's stuck to the same gameplan. It's also worth noting that we've won all our home games in the knockout phase of the CL. The 0-0 draw against Chelsea at the Nou Camp in '08 is the only game we've not won. Our other home losses in the CL- Shaktar in '08 and Rubin Kazan in '09 have come at the group stage. As regards the team's mental strength, I'm in tandem with you on that one. We find it difficult to get by under a lot of pressure. This is one area Jose edges Pep. If only Pep could instill some doggedness and mental toughness in the lads such that they won't be fazed by any amount of pressure, media attention and all what not, he'd be the greatest gaffer ever. |

Too bad he has learnt the hard way. Hope dey sha. |
Sad, really sad, but how come Babayaro is retired at 32? I don't think he had any injury problem that would prevent him from playing at the highest stage at this point in time. Socrates retired at the age of 50. He retired after playing for an English non league side, Garforth Town. Maldini retired aged 39. Giggs, 37, is still playing likewise Kevin Phillips, also 37, at the highest stage. Why is Babayaro retired? I'm being forced to think it's out of laziness. My advice is for him to find himself a club he will be playing for. If he cant, then he can always come back home. He's lucky, he can speak 'phoné', that will easily get him a job as a pundit on Supersports Nigeria. He can also take to music like his younger brother, Emmanuel Babayaro has done. His brother is also a pundit. He shouldn't just sit in one spot like I assume he's doing, there're opportunities everywhere. |
Plateau Utd suspend coach The management of Plateau United of Jos has approved the suspension of coach Ndubuisi Nduka. This followed the poor showing of the club in the Premier League The Club’s Media Adviser, Mr. Tongshinung Goteng, said on Tuesday that the assistant coach, Tony Ogharandukwu, and Maurice Longmiap, who was on attachment from the Plateau State Sports Council, had also been suspended. He said that the team would now be managed by the General Manager, Bitrus Bewarang. He will manage the team for the rest of the season, with only four matches to the end of the first round. Bewarang is expected to work with the coach Taye Yusuf, who helped gain promotion for the team from the Professional League Goteng said that the decision to suspend Nduka was taken on after an emergency meeting convened to assess the performance of the team in the 16 week-old season. He said, “After the team’s string of loses, the management felt uncomfortable and decided that the team might not survive relegation and decided to take the decision.” “Before the decision was taken, an ultimatum was issued to the Technical Crew to work assiduously to improve the fortunes of the team, especially since Plateau United has been given the permission by the NPL to play its home matches at the Rwang Pam Stadium. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201102161312145 |
AjanleKoko:You are absolutely spot on. I really hated Xavi back then too. I remember how he hit the post when we were knocked out by Chelsea in CL and I was really pissed off with him. It's hard to believe it's the same Xavi we all talk about today. |
One year ban on Salami is harsh – Amoo Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) head coach, Fatai Amoo, has described the one year suspension slammed on striker Gbolahan Salami (pictured) by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) as too severe. The organising and disciplinary committee of the country's football house charged the former Sunshine Stars' man for attempting to assault a match official after his team's game against Crown Football Club at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. The NFF committee subsequently handed him a one-year suspension in a hearing in which the player was absent from. Salami was also expelled from the camp of the Nigerian men's national team, the Super Eagles, in Abuja in the wake of the punishment. 3SC gaffer, Amoo, is now of the view that the FA committee on disciplinary matters should have not come down so hard on Salami since the player had no intention of attacking a match official as alleged. “The truth is that Gbolahan (Salami) told me he never intended to attack the referee but wanted to talk to him (the referee) about his officiating in that game (against Crown). Gbolahan felt that since he was captain on the day he has the right to make his mind known to the referee but never planned to attack the referee as it is believed. “I think the whole issue was misunderstood because he was held back by our team manager (Ajibade Babalade). Even at that he kept saying that he just wanted to have a few words with the referee, as we see players do at the end of matches in top leagues across the world. “But to give him a one-year ban is just too much. When you suspend a player like that, you ultimately kill everything in him such as his talent and career. I'm not saying this because he is my player but I feel a one-year ban is too much, as I believe there are other better ways to sanction an erring player,” Amoo told SuperSport.com. It is, however, the second time that Salami is coming under suspension this season after he was handed a four-game ban by the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) after his verbal assault on Sunshine Stars' head coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, on the opening day of the season. http://naijaligue..com/

Juth fire coaching staff Bottom club in the ongoing season of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), Jos University Teaching Hospital (Juth) Football Club, have sacked their technical crew following the side’s 1 – 4 loss to Ocean Boys at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa on Wednesday. Spokesman of the club, Olusola Alao, in a statement said the team’s head coach, Tunde Abdulrahman as well as his three assistants have been shown the exit door by the management of Juth FC. Abdulrahman’s assistants affected by the immediate sack are Joshua Stephen, Tony Ubaka and Audu Issa Pele. Alao explained that the sack of the quartet was a decision taken by the club following the side’s poor performance so far in the Premier League this season. A part of the statement read: “Following the dismal performance of the team in the ongoing 2010/2011 Premier League season, the Healers as JUTH FC is called have thrown all their coaches into the labour market.” Alao, however, revealed that the club after reviewing the performance of the team on Wednesday decided to terminate the contracts of Abdulrahman and his assistants. Juth through the statement said they will name a new coach by this weekend. “Their sacking is due to the poor run and dismal performance (of Juth) in the league. A new coach will be announced weekend," the statement read. Juth are currently 20th on the Premier League log with eight points from 14 games. http://naijaligue..com/ |
Nigeria preview for Week 17 Saturday, February 19, 2011 Kwara United v Sharks In their last three games, Kwara United are yet to win and it must be a source of concern for coach Kadiri Ikhana. And he will be keen to see his side return to winning ways against Sharks at the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu. Sharks have won just once on the road all season and have picked just a point in four of this same game in the past. The Afonja Warriors will struggle but should get all points. Prediction: 1 – 0 Dolphins v Bukola Babes This is the star game of the week, as first placed side face third placed. Surprisingly in 720 minutes, newcomers, Bukola Babes, have not lost a game. Coincidentally, the last time the Babes lost it was by a lone goal to Sharks in Port Harcourt on December 18, 2010. For Bukola Babes this is going to be a massive test, as they visit the Garden City for the second time this season. The odds favour Dolphins but Bukola Babes will fancy their chance. Prediction: 2 – 1 Crown FC v Enugu Rangers The Flying Antelopes’ defensive approach has been responsible for their poor form on the road. Crown Football Club, on the other hand, won at Plateau United last weekend and will look to continue from that winning position. The Ajilete Valiant should coast to a win in this first meeting between both sides. Prediction: 2 – 0 Sunday, February 20, 2011 Warri Wolves v Niger Tornadoes Since their name was changed from NPA to Warri Wolves, Niger Tornadoes have never picked a point in Warri. Last season, this game ended 2 – 1 in favour of Wolves and Paul Aigbogun’s men look poised to inflict another defeat on Tornadoes this season. Prediction: 3 – 1 Heartland v Plateau United Plateau United are on a miserable streak of eight runs without a win and little wonder they handed their head coach, Ndubuisi Nduka, a suspension. Bitrus Bewarang takes charge of his first game and it starts with a difficult trip to Heartland. The last time both sides met in this same fixture was on February 29, 2004 and Heartland then known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale won by a lone goal. Prediction: 1 – 0 Lobi Stars v 3SC Last season in this corresponding fixture, Lobi Stars won by two-nil and it looks so possible that they will grab all points in this game. This is because Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) have turned themselves to a one-man team by depending solely on suspended Gbolahan Salami when the likes of Raheem Owolabi, Chima Akas, Olumide Adigun and Taofeek Adepoju have saved them the blushes in a few games this season. Prediction: 1 – 0 Ocean Boys v Zamfara United The form guide of 2006 champions, Ocean Boys, have improved in the last five round of matches and definitely they look good too go against Zamfara United. Chigozie Christopher will be the centre of focus when Zamfara United come calling following his mid-week performance against Jos University Teaching Hospital (Juth) Football Club. Prediction: 2 – 0 Sunshine Stars v Kano Pillars This is the biggest clash on Sunday. In eight head-to-head meeting between the two sides since 2003, Kano Pillars have edged Sunshine Stars with four wins to two. But based on their current home form Sunshine Stars are tipped to win this compared to Pillars that have won just once on the road (against Juth FC) this term. Prediction: 2 – 1 Juth FC v Enyimba Juth FC may have sacked their coaching staff, it will not deter the champions, Enyimba, from picking all points. The Healers may be the home side in this tie but they will find it tough to handle the Peoples Elephant, who are now in their elements to win matches irrespective of the name of the ground. Prediction: 0 – 2 Kaduna United v Gombe United Gombe United go into this match without a win in five games as well as a poor form in away games this season. It is difficult to see where Gombe United’s goal(s) will come from considering that they have not won or picked a point in Kaduna in over five years now. Prediction: 2 – 0 http://naijaligue..com/ |
Dolphins star in Team of the Week Premier League leaders Dolphins claimed three spots in the Nigeria Premier League Matchday 16 Team of the Week. The NPL named Uche Oguchi at right-back, Daddy Maurice in central midfield and Derek Amadi as one of the two men in the striking role. Newcomers Crown Football Club also claimed two spots in the team of the week, just as Sunshine Stars got two players. Sharks are the other side with two players in Juwon Oshaniwa and Stanley Okoronkwo. Warri Wolves goalkeeper Ambrose Vanzekin is the only returnee to this week’s team for the second week. Others in the team are Fade Adebayo of Bukola Babes and Olumide Adigun of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC). HOW THEY MADE THE TEAM Ambrose Vanzekin (Warri Wolves) Makes the team for the second consecutive week after his heroic display in Bauchi against Gombe United at the weekend which earned his side a point. Uche Oguchi (Dolphins) He edged the duo of Sunday Abe of Sunshine Stars and Odinga Odinga of Sharks for the right-back position with his steady display against Zamfara United in Kano. Fade Adebayo (Bukola Babes) Has marginally missed getting in over the past three match-days, but this time Adebayo broke into the team after his defensive display and his ability to prove that he is a dead-ball specialist with another free-kick against Lobi Stars. Olumide Adigun (3SC) A free-scoring centre-back when in his element. Last weekend he popped up with two goals to help 3SC beat struggling Jos University Teaching Hospital (Juth) 3 - 0. Juwon Oshaniwa (Sharks) Claims the left-back role in his first team of the week appearance. His runs and link up with Stanley Okoronkwo on the left flank helped Sharks grab all three points against Kaduna United in Port Harcourt last Saturday. Sunday Abe (Sunshine Stars) The modern day fullback has as much offensive responsibilities as defensive, and against Ocean Boys, Abe got that balance exactly right, impressing in the absence of Ofem Inah, who was rested by Gbenga Ogunbote. Daddy Maurice (Dolphins) The midfielder played in a central role for Dolphins against Zamfara United at the weekend. He was the man in the middle for Dolphins that kept them steady in Kano. Stanley Okoronkwo (Sharks) His second goal was sublime against Kaduna United after his first. Okoronkwo was the talking point in that game due to his work rate and technique on the left side of the midfield of the Blue Angels. Ibrahim Ajani (Sunshine Stars) Suddenly Ajani is becoming the main man for Sunshine Stars as it appears that striker Ukeyima Akombo's goal-scoring run has dried up. Ajani by virtue of the penalty he converted against Ocean Boys. Gabriel Agu (Crown FC) He has shown that he is an experienced campaigner in the NPL this season and has turned in three goals for Crown including last weekend's goal at Plateau United at the weekend that helped Crown to their first away win. Derek Amadi (Dolphins) The former apprentice of the Pepsi Football Academy scored his first goal of the season for Dolphins and a big one at that. The goal earned Dolphins another away win and ensured that they remain top of the Premier League. Oladunni Oyekale (Crown FC) He came on as head coach of Crown FC on the back of Ganiyu Salami's sack. And the former Nigerian international has responded with an away for Crown FC - their first in the topflight. Team of the Week GK: Ambrose Vanzekin (Warri Wolves) RB: Uche Oguchi (Dolphins) CB: Fade Adebayo (Bukola Babes) CB: Olumide Adigun (3SC) LB: Juwon Oshaniwa (Sharks) RM: Sunday Abe (Sunshine Stars) CM: Daddy Maurice (Dolphins) LM: Stanley Okoronkwo (Sharks) AM: Ibrahim Ajani (Sunshine Stars) FW: Gabriel Agu (Crown FC) FW: Derek Amadi (Dolphins) Coach: Oladunni Oyekale (Crown FC) http://www.kickoff.com/news/20311/dolphins-star-in-nigeria-premier-league-team-of-the-week.php |
So Sarabia plays for Madrid's castilla? I remeber the guy from Egypt 09. He and Emilano Nsue of Mallorca were up front for Spain. He's a really talented youngster. But the problem with Madrid is that these guys will hardly ever get into the first team. Since the Raul, Guti, Casillas era, hardly anybody from the Castilla has forced his way into the first team. The likes of Pedro Munitis, Javier Portillo, Roberto Soldado, Alvaro Negredo, Juan Mata, have gone on to become revelations elsewhere. I won't be surprised if the same fate befalls Sarabia, Moratta, Canales and the other youngsters. |
Long Walk - Jill Scott |
Has anyone been watchin this Bukola Babes centreback, Fade Adebayo? He scored yet another freekick for Babes in their 3-1 win over Lobi Stars at the weekend, making it the third freekick he's scored this season. I hope Sia1 is watching. Results of matches played in midweek: Ocean Boys 4 vs JUTH FC 1 Enyimba 1 vs Heartland 0 Kano Pillars 2 vs Gombe United 1. |
holydante:wow! Cheers bro. I dey pop palmy here for you eh. Meanwhile, I stayed away from every footie website and show on TV and radio yesterday. I didn't wanna hear any rubbish analysis. I know they would have made it sound like Arsenal achieved some great feat while in truth, they are in a very dangerous position. |
Abeg, when is the dvd of your win over Barcelona at the Emirates gonna be released? A win in which you conceded an away goal that puts you on the brink of elimination. Wilshere dominated the midfield? ROTFLMAO. . . Ball possession was 66%-34% in favour of Barca. In which part of your dreams did Wilshere dominate the midfield? I can count the number of times the kid even touched the ball. Wilshere dominated a midfield that had Xavi and Sergio? What insult!! Did you guys see the game at all? You were simply lucky. Y'all think Messi will forever spurn sitters? |
Pharoh:lol at the bolded part. I can't believe they lost at home yet again. There's really no use for the return leg. I think Villareal has a good chance of going through after the 0-0 draw away at Napoli. They can get a win at home at the Madrigal but I must say that Napoli are really good. A tough game it will be. |
hannie:If you weren't an archetypal mor0n, you would know that I don't give a f-u ck how much time you've been here. You could spend the rest of your lifetime on here for all I care. Real Madrid vs Juventus - UCL 03 Milan vs Deportivo - UCL 04 Did you see these games? No knockout tie is over until the 2nd leg is played. We scored an away goal and you lead by a lone goal heading to the Nou Camp, can't you see that Barca has the advantage here? Do you think Arsenal can withstand the baptism of fire Inter survived last season? How long is it gonna take before y'all crack? You guys stand no chance at the Nou Camp. Of course, you know that but you will rather bask in your trademark gaynner delusion. PS- When is the dvd of your win over Barcelona at the Emirates gonna be released? |
hannie:Only a purposeless team will celebrate conceding an away. The score is 1-2 and the return leg is at Camp Nou, which team has the advantage? Do you want me to school you on champions league history? Did you see Real Madrid vs Juventus in 2003? I guess not, another Sky Sports/EPL recent footie follower. . . Arsenal must be really aimless. How can a team celebrate conceding an away goal? I can't crack this one. |
we see how it goes. mutv has just stated fergie is about bringing the boy to old trafford. i wanted to know what makes him tick. i would have preferred christian eriksen (the teenage sensation that made wilshere look like a zombie last week).
You have an eye for good players. This guy is what you call a wonderkid. The way he bossed the midfield for Denmark against England was like an experienced veteran and I think he's still below 20 and he's not getting a lot of media hype. |
One positive thing about this defeat is that it takes all the eyes off us. It's good we get praises from the media but all the talk of being the "greatest team ever" puts a whole lot of pressure on the players' shoulder. We are a great team but we are not invincible, no team is. I'm glad the tag of invincibility has been taken off us and we can now fly below the radar. As for the game, 1-2 is not a bad result. We were the better side, we were unlucky not to have won. I don't think Maxwell did badly. The two goals we conceded were not from his wing. I think defensively, we played badly and we missed CP5. I hope he will be back for the return leg. I'm confident we will make it to the q/finals. |

Can't remember the cat that dropped this I'm a mean emcee/ me smile is unlikely/ The only time I get head over hills/ is when your b**ch gives my d***/ a lick/ on a peak/ |
You fall my hand o, Mr. Dj. Why did you have to postpone the party? Is there anything wrong with doing the burial of someone already infected with AIDS before the person's death? The person is gonna die anyway. |
switch47:Story! Arsenal were plain lucky!. Messi spurned two clear sitters, how many times in a full cycle have you seen that happen? What if they had gone in, do you think Arsenal would play with the same spirit as they did in the final quarter? All those times we had endless spells on the ball, what were Arsenal doing? Weren't all their men behind the ball? Arsenal only came into the game after Barca had taken its foot of the gas pedal and again taking off Villa at that moment was just suicide. Villa had done so well and his combination with Messi was causing Arsenal all sorts of trouble. Messi also scored a clean goal that was disallowed. It will be nothing short of an annihilation at the Nou Camp. There will be no way out for Arsenal. |
I think Chaos Theory played to Arsenal's favour, I mean, Messi spurned two sitters that any footie follower would put his life down for that he would score. |
I think Chaos Theory played to Arsenal's favour, I mean, Messi spurned two sitters that any footie follower would put his life down for that he would score. |
Chei!!! Your first win over Barca in 6 attempts and see the eruptions. Na wa o. . . So you expected us to roast you at home. Are you so used to defeat now? Only a purposeless team will celebrate conceding an away goal going to the Nou Camp Gaynerssss ![]() |
On the bright side, we got the away goal and this means all we have to do is win at the Camp Nou. It will attack all through, no second of complacency from the lads. Another thing I love about this loss is that it takes away that tag of invincibility from us and the pressure of being seen as invincible. I'm confident we'll do it at Camp Nou. |
medjai:Like I rightly predicted, Arsenal dominated the first 15 minutes but once we settled down, it was all over. Why was Messi's goal disallowed? |
It's all over in the Eastern Derby. FT: Enyimba 1 vs Heartland 0. Goal scored by Josiah Maduabuchi. Match was live on SS9. 5 straight wins for Enyimba in all competitions now. Meanwhile, Pillars are 2 - 1 up against Gombe. They came from a goal down. |
