An illegal immigrant who murdered the daughter he had to avoid deportation was jailed for life today.

Olusola Akinrele, 34, was told he must serve at least 16 years in prison for killing six-week-old baby girl Leeya in December 2006.

Leeya died from brain damage 12 days after her apparently lifeless body was found at her home in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. She had 22 broken ribs, a fractured skull, a fractured thigh, and had also been bitten on the nose and both hands, the Old Bailey heard.

'Psychopathic': Olusola Akinrele (top) will serve 16 years for killing his baby Leeya. Her mother, Kelly Inman (bottom) pleaded guilty to allowing her death and was cleared of murder

Judge Philip Clegg said: 'When she was not asleep, Leeya must have been in excruciating pain.' He said Akinrele, a Nigerian, had 'little or no interest in his daughter'.

'You simply saw her birth as as something which might help you avoid deportation,' he told the killer. Akinrele was described in a psychiatric report as 'a manipulative individual with psychopathic traits'.

He was convicted of murder by a jury at Ipswich Crown Court and faces automatic deportation on completing his sentence. The baby's mother Kelly Inman, 22, pleaded guilty earlier to allowing her death and was cleared of murder during the trial. She received a total sentence of five years, having also been convicted of a separate fraud charge.

It was she who called 999 after Akinrele's final attack on their daughter.
Ipswich Crown Court heard that in the two-and-a-half weeks following her birth, Leeya underwent routine checks by midwives and a health visitor and her condition had not caused concern. But in the 24 days leading up to the emergency call, she had not been seen by health professionals and was in the care of her parents. The judge found that the injuries she sustained during that period represented at least three separate attacks.

On one occasion, Leeya must have been shaken and 'come into forceful contact with something hard', on another severe force was applied to her right leg, and on a third she had been bitten.

The judge told Akinrele: 'During the week before she was taken to hospital, it must have been obvious to both you and Kelly that Leeya was a very sick child who needed immediate treatment.'

On December 18 2006, the baby's father was alone upstairs with his daughter when he carried out the attack that killed her.
The judge said: 'The attack must have taken the form of either violent shaking or throwing the child down hard.'

He told Akinrele that her death was the 'culmination of a violent course of conduct committed by you against your daughter over two or three weeks'.
'Your victim could not have been more vulnerable. She was only six weeks old and to your knowledge weak and ill.

'It is to be expected that any child should look to its parent for protection. What you did to Leeya was a terrible breach of trust.'
The court heard Akinrele had never been interested in his baby, failing to attend ante-natal classes or the birth, during which he turned his phone off to avoid being disturbed.

He saw her 'incessant crying' as an 'irritant', the judge said.
The fatal attack, he added, took place during a 'sudden flash of temper'

Strong indications emerged at the weekend that the visit of the six ministers mandated by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to visit ailing President Musa Yar’Adua in Saudi Arabia may end up as a infutility.

A source in the Presidency who is also close to the first family, but pleaded anonymity, said the First Lady, Hajia Tura’i Yar’Adua, had given stern instructions to officials at the hospital where the president was admitted in Jeddah not to allow the visiting ministers access to the president.

Members of the government’s team include, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ahmed Yayale, Agriculture and Water Resources Minster, Sayyadi Abba-Ruma, Health Minister, Babatunde Osotimehin, Foreign Affairs Minister, Ojo Maduekwe, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Adetokunbo Kayode and Petroleum Minster, Rilwanu Lukman.
Information available to Daily Sun as at press time on the movement of the ministers to Saudi Arabia were sketchy as it could not be confirmed whether they had left or not. But the arrangement by the FEC was for the ministers to leave on Sunday and return by Tuesday and then brief the council on the outcome of the trip on Wednesday.

Ahead of the visit, the Federal Government has formally written to the Saudi Monarch, King Fahd Abdulaziz, seeking permission for the delegate to ascertain the health status of President Yar’Adua.
The decision of the government to write ahead of the visit was to ensure access to the president who was reported to have been moved to a restricted military facility in the Saudi kingdom.
It was not clear whether the letter forwarded to the Saudi king would facilitate access to Yar’Adua, but the Daily Sun source said Hajia Turai was also contemplating leaving the city of Jeddah for the period that would be spent by the ministers, to avoid being persuaded by them, which could in turn make her change her earlier decision.

Daily Sun equally learnt that, the first lady was strategizing on ways to frustrate the efforts of the visiting ministers. Her actions, according to the source, was to thwart any move by the FEC to declare Yar’Adua unfit to rule after the ministers would have retuned from Saudi Arabia and made their observations known.
“You know if the ministers are unable to see the president, it may be extremely difficult for FEC to declare Yar’Adua unfit to rule,” the source said.

President Yar’Adua has been on admission for acute pericarditis in Saudi Arabia since November 23, 2009.
Also, it was learnt that, the Minister of Health, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, was reluctant to go for the trip because his appointment as a minister was fast-tracked by the first lady, who was said to have a hand in his nomination for the post.

Again, the source added that, Osotimehin was also reluctant because being a medical doctor himself, the responsibility of writing the report based on his observations on the state of health of the president would definitely fall on him. And that, the source said, was capable of pitching him against the first lady, who could feel the ministers was disloyal.

Daily Sun’s gathered that only three people have access to the president in the Saudi hospital; the chief security officer to the president, his aide-de-camp and the first lady.
Since the president’s admission in the hospital in November last year, several top people in government have made unsuccessful efforts to see the him.

On the list was a delegation of the Governors’ Forum led by its Chairman, Dr. Bukola Saraki and comprising Gabriel Suswan of Benue State; Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State; Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, who is also an in-law to the president and the president’s Economic Adviser, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu. They traveled to Jeddah on November 29 last year, but were not allowed to see the president.
Again, on December 26, 2009, the president’s Principal Secretary, Mr. David Edevbie, also traveled to Saudi Arabia but was not allowed to see his boss.

A delegation of the House of Representatives, led by Shehu Agaie (Niger State) and comprising Ali Ndume (Borno), Patrick Ikhariale (Edo State), Moruf Fatai (Lagos State) and Jibril Adamu (Kaduna State) also went to Saudi Arabia on February 9 but after waiting for five days without seeing Yar’Adua, they returned to Nigeria.
And just last week, a delegation of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, led by the party’s National Chairman, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, also traveled to Jeddah but was reportedly barred from seeing the president.

Ohakim stated that Oguta, the proposed site of the base, is suitable for the project being a riverine area.

He stated that the Federal Government has also approved a N25 billion road project that would traverse Owerri to Rivers State.

The President-General of the Yoruba Community in Plateau State, Chief Toye Ogunsuyi, narrowly escaped death with his family yesterday evening as his house along Zaria Road, Jos was bombed by unknown persons.

Although it is not clear when the bomb was planted in his house, it was gathered that the bomb exploded during the curfew hours.
Effort to reach Ogunsuyi proved abortive but his neighbors told journalists who had throng the scene that the Yoruba chief said he was watching television with his wife when he suddenly heard a loud bang on his roof.

He was said to have immediately reached out to the direction of the bang when he saw that his roof was already on fire.
He hurried out with his family and within minutes the entire house was said to have been engulfed by fire.
He had similarly escaped death during the crisis in January when he and the Oba Yoruba of Jos, Chief Solomon Olugbodi were attacked by hoodlums and were injured.

There are insinuations that Ogunsuyi’s attack may not be unconnected with his recent protest over the exclusion of the Yorubas in the Solomon Lar-led advisory committee set up by the Federal Government on the crisis.
The attack is seen by many as a consequence of his unrelenting position that the Yoruba deserved equal recognition with any other settler group.

An Igbo Chief in Jos, Ndu Chidi who reacted to the bomb attack said his house was attacked in a similar pattern.
Earlier in the week the Igbo community had protested the gruesome killing of one Ikechukwu by the Hausa/Fulani who had a fracas with the indigenes over a portion of land to bury a corpse.

Chidi said “we are not land owners, and we are not involved in the dispute of land trespass, but we were shocked when Ikechukwu, a welder in front of his shop was attacked by the Hausa group and murdered in cold blood right in front of his shop.

“We had reported to the Katako Police Station since yesterday but nothing has been done till this moment; no arrest was effected and we can still see the murderers moving about freely, that’s why we are protesting.”

However, when contacted, the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Lerama, has denied knowledge of the recent mishap in the city. He said the matter had not been reported to the command.

Lukman Backs Barkindo On Northernisation Of NNPC
InDICAtions have emerged that Dr. Rilwan Lukman, Minister of Petroleum Resources, is responsible for the mass replacement of qualified senior officials from the south of Nigeria in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) with new officials being recruited from the states in the north.

Recently, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources was redeployed for protesting the appointment of Dr. Mohammed Barkindo, Group Managing Director of NNPC as the governor of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

This position, in the past, was consistently occupied by Permanent Secretary of the Petroleum Ministry and Head of Petroleum Inspectorate Division, now Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), since Nigeria joined OPEC.

A senior official of the Petroleum Ministry disclosed in Abuja during the week that Lukman has consistently frustrated other board members of NNPC from bringing an end to the recruitment of mainly top officials from the north taking over from qualified southern officials.

This backdoor recruitment, which was started few months ago by Barkindo, it was gathered, involves placing new officials from the north as general managers, managers and deputy managers above those already in service without promotion for several years.

The implementation of the northernisation project, the official said, was enhanced by major changes made by President Umaru Yar’Adua in NNPC whereby 67 top senior management staff were redeployed in July 2009.

In the changes approved by Yar’Adua during the period, 13 senior officials of the corporation were retired.

Our source said further: “To strengthen the recruitment of northern candidates into key positions in the corporation, key officials from the north were approved for the replacement of officials affected by the changes at the group human resources of NNPC.”

The new appointees included Dr. Attahiru Yusuf, Group Executive Director (GED) Corporate Services; Mr. Auwalu Abubakar, (GGM) of Group Human Resources; Hajia M. Sanni, General Manager of Human Resources Division and Malam I.M Bawa, General Manager, Admin Services.

“From the top positions being occupied by officials from the north, it is clear that it will not take a year before NNPC will eventually be dominated mainly by northerners because the recruitment organ of NNPC is manned only by northerners,” he noted.

The source added that several northerners have been employed by the NNPC through the backdoor without following due process of employment and input of other board members. He added that these young northerners were placed in management positions, whereas there are several qualified staff of the corporation who are in positions of chief officers for several years without promotion.

Brother marries sister

It could be described as a taboo for siblings to marry one another, but Anthonia and Victor in desperate bid to secure UK visa decided to be known and addressed as husband and wife. On the fateful day, January 28, 2008, Anthonia dressed in a flowing white gown, marched to the Ojo marriage registry with Victor to be joined as husband and wife. This was done in a bid to convince the British High Commission to grant them a visiting visa since they can never meet the criteria needed to secure such visa.

With the aid of a naval officer, (Kayode Olaniyan) they were able to secure forged documents, which portrayed them as highly placed individuals in Nigeria. The expectation was that the forged document would guarantee them a visiting visa, and they applied to spend two weeks in UK.

To further convince the BHC, they went along with their wedding photograph, especially where they were cementing their ‘marriage’ with a kiss. Bubble however bust on February 16 when the British High Commission that was not aware the ‘couple’ is related by blood discovered that the bank statement presented was slightly altered. They alerted the police at the Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi who in turn dispatched an officer to stand by for any possible arrest.

Unknown to them that their game was up, the BHC invited the ‘couple’ for a final interview, where they would be issued a visa. They were careful to ensure that they appeared in uniformed attire so that the difference would not be spotted. Passersby commended their choice of spouse as they looked alike. In the visa section, holding each other closely they stepped into the interview room. The man meant to interview them enquired if they had a swell time on Sunday being Valentine. They were still waiting for their Visa to be issued when the police arrested them for forgery. They were arrested alongside the visa racketeer, Kayode Olaniyan who is alleged to have forged the entire document used for the act.

The PRO SFU, CSP Akan, explained that when Victor discovered that the game was up, he shouted that the man (Kayode) who gave them the document was waiting outside to collect the balance as soon as they collect their approved visa. Unknown to Kayode, the game was up; he was arrested where he was waiting for the balance as soon as the deal clicks. In the course of interrogation, ready to vomit all the illegal things, they have done, Victor confessed that Anthonia was not his wife but his blood sister.

Victor told Saturday Sun that he was tired of struggling to survive in Nigeria that was why he quickly grabbed the opportunity when Kayode promised to assist them to travel out. “He gave us instances of people who he had travelled as ‘couple’. He requested that we should pay N900,000 for the deal but we ended up paying N180,000 with the promise to pay up as soon as the visa is granted.

“He promised that it was easier for couple to be granted visa so we quickly bought the idea to pose as couple. Part of the criteria was to get married, he arranged and we paid at the Ojo marriage registry. He also got some document which shows that I am a marine engineer, working in a company where I am paid more N300,000 monthly. I am an OND student of Lagos State Polytechnic where I am studying Banking and Finance.

I am not a marine engineer and do not have an account in WEMA Bank. I have never attended Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island. My real names are Ayeye Victor Adejobi. My younger sister who posed as my wife is Antonia Ayeye. Nebelisa is not my father’s name at all. Kayode gave us the surname ‘Nebelisa’ and instructed that we should obtain the passport. He took us to Ado Ekiti where we obtained the passport in the name of ‘Nebelisa’.”

When asked how he felt, kissing his sister, Victor said: “ It was disgusting but then I had no choice. I felt very bad knowing that it is an abomination, but because we wanted results, we had to comply. Take a look at the picture it will show that I was not comfortable with what I was doing.” Anthonia saw herself as an actress that was why she was very comfortable when it was time to kiss the bride.

On why she decided to embark on such mission, Anthonia explained that she did it to better her life and would not hesitate do whatever it took to get to the promised land. “I am a stylist and my office is located at Onobotubon Street, off Asho Street, Benin. Victor is my blood brother from the same father and mother. We were introduced to Kayode by a family friend who claimed that he has assisted a lot of people to secure UK visa.”

She explained that: “one of the ways to perfect the plan was to marry my brother, Victor. I saw that as a mere act, since I know that I am not married to my brother in real life. As agreed he took us to the marriage registry at Ojo, Lagos, to get married. At the end we were issued a marriage certificate. To perfect the business, he said we are to pay N900,000, but we managed to drop N180,000 as part payment. I am single and still searching ”

Their rip-off games man, Olaniyan, was not satisfied with his pay in the Navy and he chose to go into visa racketeering to add to his monthly salary. With his experience in the Navy, he was able to reproduce documents used to facilitate his clients’ visa requests, which depict the applicants as having military background.

Kayode who lives at No. 42 Olajumoke Street, Ikotun, Lagos, claimed that he joined the Nigerian Navy in 2005, and still works in the Navy. He explained that he knew his clients “through a family friend of mine, Tunde who told me that they were desperate to travel out of the country. I was the one who arranged for the forged marine documents and marine certificate of competency.

I brought the sample and it was reproduced just like the original document. I then hired the services of a good forger, Isaac, who brought the bank statement, sales receipt and the other documents that were presented. I asked them to pay, N900,000 to process the document which they agreed to but I only collected N180,000 based on the agreement that I would receive the balance at the end of the business. I would have collected the remaining sum today if the visa was issued.”

To the amazement of the British High Commission, Victor presented a document showing that he is working at the Durba Shipping (DNL). He also furnished the Commission with an internal memo approving 30 days annual leave, payment slip indicating a monthly salary of N310,000, letter of employment showing that he was employed as 2nd Engineer with effect from May 12, 2003 and a letter of introduction from the company. Victor further gave the Commission a certificate of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island Lagos.

Anthonia, the hair stylist on her part appeared before the interview panel claiming that she is CEO/Chairman of the Emmanuel Sidah Ventures. She presented an introduction letter of herself as the owner of the company. Also in her custody was a document from the Corporate Affairs Commission showing when the business was registered. This document was a certificate to authenticate the registration of the business.

EFCC probes Fashola •Investigators move to Lagos •True Face withdraws allegations against House
| Print | E-mail
Written by Lanre Adewole, Adewale Ajayi and Sarah Ogburogho

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into the issues raised in the corruption allegations against the Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola.
EFCC’s spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, told the Nigerian Tribune that the petition detailing alleged corrupt practices by the governor in the handling of the state’s finances was receiving the attention of the agency, just like any other petition.

“I am aware that the petition against the governor is being handled by the commission, just like any other petition,” Babafemi said.

Nigerian Tribune further gathered from sources within the commission that the anti-corruption agency boss, Mrs. Farida Waziri, ordered the commencement of the probe last Monday, following the perusal of the petition against the governor.

The petition was filed by a group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL).

A five-man probe team was also said to have been raised by Waziri, with members drawn from both Abuja and Lagos offices of the commission.

The investigators from Abuja have reportedly arrived in Lagos in readiness for the gathering of evidence on the corruption allegations levelled against the governor.

The Lagos House of Assembly had also set up a six-man panel to investigate the governor of the alleged fraudulent acts in the handling of the state’s finances.

The move by the lawmakers is now a subject of litigation in a Lagos high court, which had halted the probe in the interim.

While inaugurating the panel, Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, had stated that “the committee was charged with the responsibility of looking into the allegations of financial impropriety, abuse of due process and the rule of law, as well as violation of several sections of the 1999 Constitution against the governor.”

Relying on the issues of corrupt practices raised against the governor by another group, the ‘True Face of Lagos,’ the petitioner accused the governor of plundering the state in the name of delivering democracy dividends.

Among other allegations, the governor was accused of giving N250 million to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to organise last year’s NBA conference that was held in the state.

He was also accused of spending N420 million in six months to hire private security through the State Security Trust Fund, while N2 billion was allegedly spent on infrastructure, on roads and drainage in Ikorodu General Hospital.

Fashola was equally said to have spent huge sums of money on the planting of trees and flowers in a state where they claimed there was no water, adding that a certain Tunji Olowolafe executed up to 70 per cent of all Lagos government contracts.

The governor was alleged to have awarded a 2km portion of Western Avenue for N7.7 billion to Julius Berger, while N135 million was alleged to have been used in fuelling 225 vehicles in the governor’s office.

Meanwhile, True Face of Lagos, on Tuesday, withdrew its allegation against members of the Assembly.

The group, in a letter delivered to the state Assembly and signed by Messrs Kasali Martins, Adebayo Adesina and Dr Tunde George, said they had discovered that the money alleged to have been given to members of the House to cover up the allegation of financial mismanagement against the state governor was not correct, and that the money was not given to the lawmakers as alleged.

The group said it had discovered that the money was only collected from the governor to deceive him that the House had been bribed to cover up his financial mismanagement .

According to the group, “for the avoidance of doubt, we would like to state categorically that, we are dropping the allegations against Mr Speaker and the Assembly that they collected money. We would like to place it on record that we regret all the inconvenience and discomfort this must have caused individual members, but it is important to stress that the Assembly must now use her position of high moral authority to hold the executive arm of government accountable.”

Speaking with journalists after submitting the letter a member of the group, Mr Adebayo, who claimed to be human rights activist, said his group had decided to exonerate the members of the House because there was no evidence that members of the House received the bribe, but there was evidence that a certain amount of money was released to bribe the lawmakers.

Deliberating on the letter submitted by the group, the lawmakers expressed happiness that they had been vindicated.

Speaking on the matter, Honourable Jimoh Adewale (Apapa I), suggested that the group should go back and make another advertorial retracting the allegation against members of the House, so that they could be saved from embarrassment which the group had caused the House through its previous advertorial.

Speaking in the same vein, Honourable Alawiye King (Lagos Island I), urged his colleague to be careful because they were giving the group unnecessary and undue attention, just as he said their publication had distracted the House.

In the submission of the Speaker, he urged other groups with similar allegations to feel free and approach the House with their facts.

The group, held several meetings in the office of a principal aide of President Yar’Adua, and in a highbrow hotel in the Asokoro District of Abuja also alleged that the Acting President has already blown over N300 billion since November 23, 2009 when Yar’Adua left for treatment abroad.

Confirming the development, a source in the Presidency attributed the new offensive and the unyielding pressure on Jonathan on desperation. “They want to use this to smear the man’s image and make him unattractive and unacceptable to Nigerians. They are afraid of their jobs, but they pretend to be fighting for the Northern interest. They claim that the Acting President mismanaged the resources of Bayelsa State through reckless spending, which brought him and his successor to a disagreement in 2008. Let them bring the records.”

Daily Sun, however, reports that Jonathan has been under intense pressure from all quarters for approvals and may have lost grip in some situations, which led to the alleged massive N300 billion blow-up. Some elements also cashed in on the initial confusion and instability in the Presidency in the wake of Yar’Adua’s departure to extract huge sums of money for one design or the other.

Jonathan, it was learnt, approved monies for both pro-Yar’Adua rallies and those that were in his interest.
It was further learnt that a mind-boggling amount was used to “settle” members of the National Assembly before they acquiesced to the demand to empower Jonathan, last Tuesday. The amount is being spoken of in hush-hush tones amongst pro-Yar’Adua elements in the Presidency.
There was no immediate confirmation of the allegation, but pointers were in the direction of a leading business mogul, who they alleged provided the funds, which would be recouped in a matter of weeks after tying up a huge oil contract.
“How do you explain the sudden and dramatic turnaround of members of the National Assembly. In fact, until Monday, which is a day before that Tuesday, most of them we sounded out were still blowing hot. How can they blow cold only a few hours later? Something passed under the bridge and no one is deceived.”
Realignment

Even as the committee set up by Jonathan to harmonise duties in the Presidency involving Yar’Adua and Jonathan’s aides is set to submit its report, uncertainty is the order of the day. Some dye in the wool ministers are already keying into the Jonathan presidency. Foreign Affairs Minister Chief Ojo Maduekwe, leads the pack. He, it was alleged, was the mastermind in the controversial memo by Information and Communications Minister, Prof. Dora Akunyili.

Unlike before last week when some ministers were passive, adopting a wait-and-see attitude, a clear division between Yar’Adua and Jonathan has emerged. This became expedient, following rumours that Jonathan was under intense pressure from ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to buckle up and assert himself by firing errant ministers. Most diehard Yar’Adua supporters among the ministers and aides have taken a position to protect Yar’Adua’s interest and do not see how they can operate successfully under Jonathan presumably perceived as the weakest Vice President since the Second Republic.
Prior to his elevation, they wielded more influence and power. Jonathan’s wife, Patience is said to have come fully into the picture and is among those pushing for him to dissolve the cabinet.

Although Turai, Yar’Adua’s wife had a commanding influence in the Presidency and among ministers, there are growing concerns now, especially in the last one week on how to contend with Mrs. Jonathan following reports of her power and influence in Yenagoa between 2005 and 2007. Those in the know have already made rapprochements with a view to currying her favour, and in mortal fear of the unknown.

Why do Yorubas not work with Igbos? Afterall Zik was senior to Awo both in age, education and political know-how? Zik penetrated the West but Awo could not penetrate the East or North.

This thread will not be hijacked by people who do not want Awo discussed. We must get back to the topic and stop all the distraction.

Why was Awo trying to play on Zik and Sardauna?
Why was he prepared to be Finance Minister to either of them?
Was there desperation for power at play?

Sauron,
Those whores in Iboland are the Yorubas living in Igboland
Yoruba LovePeddler operate as students and therefore go unnoticed by relevant authorities. Go to Unilag, LASU and UI; All the Yoruba girls there are whores. This is common knowledge. Anybody marrying a present-day Yoruba female student is 95% marrying a retired LovePeddler.

Do you now agree DeRico is Africa's most notorious armed robber? grin grin grin

Anyways, gimme the stats showing the states of origin of armed robbers in Nigeria then we can have a proper debate.
I have proven there are more whores in Ibo states than anywhere else in Nigeria. I will also prove there are more Ibo robbers in Nigeria when time permits me.

De rico was notorious only in Anambra. Nobody knew him in other parts of Igboland let alone Nigeria. In contrast Oyenusi and Shina Rambo were known across Nigeria and the West Africa subregion. Now who is more into robbery?

Yoruba= Oyenusi and Rambo

Igbo= Derico
That makes a 50% difference.

His full name is Patrick Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu.  Chukwuma is an Eastern name the last time I checked - either way, Nzeogwu led a group of majors mainly Igbos in the coup.  His hometown is very close to Asaba - that area was deemed East, back in 1966. You people can disown him if you wish, it doesn't change the point I was making.

When was Asaba and its environ ever in the East of Nigeria? Why tell bold-faced or, at best, ignorant lies?

Awo was really desperate for power and wanted to play on the intelligence of Zik and the Sardauna. What a snaky snake.

You, of all people should not have any difficulty understanding why some sections of Nigeria embarked on "pogrom". A coup was led by Kaduna (an Easterner) which resulted in the cold blooded murder of primarily Northern highly beloved leaders, inculding Sardauna and Balewa - and you tell us you don't understand why their subjects reacted the way they did. Well, I don't believe you.

I don't know how you measure "most blood or "some blood" when we are talking about the loss of lives of possibly millions of Nigerians who hail from "biafra" and other parts of the country. In addition to the "culprits" you named above, you have to agree with me that Ojukwu and his commanding officers who allowed children to starve to death while they themselves ran away, rather than surrender, should be included in the list of those who have blood in their hands. We need to be honest with ourselves if we are to have any meaningful conversation. Your intentional mendacity buried in brilliant writing abilities does not foo.l me.

Was Kaduna an Easterner?

This is an extensive interview. You can read all of it here,
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/02/13/how-the-colonial-masters-empowered-the-north-%e2%80%94-chief-mbazulike-amechi/

but the bolded part got me thinking about Awo

Would you say that the different approaches to decolonisation in the East as compared to the North made the British colonialists to load political advantages against the East and in favour of the North when they were about to go?

Definitely, it was Zik that opened the eyes of people. And then, the radical elements in politics were found more in Igboland and second to Igboland was the Yoruba side. The British colonial authorities did not allow themselves to trust the Igbo man or Yoruba man. The Hausa/Fulani was the man they could trust. And so, they gerrymandered the constitution that brought independence in such a way that made sure that the North had all the powers. If you go to my other book: Nigeria, the Two Political Amalgams you will see the figures I gave there.

In the 1959 election, the election that preceded independence, the NCNC, which was predominant in the East, having 50 per cent in the West and having a foothold in the North through NEPU, scored a total of 2,594,577 votes to capture 94 seats in the Federal House. The Action Group/UMBC alliance had 1,992,364 to capture 73 seats in the House.

The NPC scored a total of 1,992,179 votes to capture a total of 142 seats in the House. So, the constituencies were carved out in such a way that the North would always be in control, and if you look at subsequent delimitation of constituencies and the population figures, the North has always ensured to maintain this pattern of dominance because nobody will like to throw away his advantages voluntarily.

That was a creation of the white man. And two, when elections were over like this and there was no one with a clear majority, what usually happened was that somebody could be called upon to form a government. But in the case of Nigeria it was not like that. Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa of the NPC was not called upon to form a government. He was not invited by the Governor General to form a government. He was appointed Prime Minister. Balewa’s emergence as the first Prime Minister of Nigeria was by appointment.

What led to that? They could easily have invited him since the figures indicated they had the majority?

What happened was that even the North was not expecting that. They were afraid. But we knew that the British government wanted the North to produce the Prime Minister because they did not trust an Igbo or Yoruba Prime Minister or anybody from the South.

After the elections and the three parties saw their standings, we were meeting at Onitsha a message came to Zik telling him that Awolowo was sending a delegation for the purpose of forming an alliance with the Action Group. They proposed that Zik should be the Prime Minister while Awolowo would be the Finance Minister. We were discussing with the delegation in Zik’s main sitting room when the telephone rang upstairs. Zik went up to answer the phone. When he was coming down the stairs, he said in Igbo, as if he was talking to someone upstairs: “agwo anyi na ya no bu kwa agwo isi na-buo!” meaning: “the snake we are dealing with has two heads!” When he came down, he told the Awolowo delegation: “Okay. Go and tell Awolowo that we are considering his proposal. We will send a delegation back to him”.

When they left, Zik told us that the telephone that he went to answer was from the Sardauna of Sokoto, and the Sardauna told him that a delegation from Awolowo was with him, offering the North Prime Minister and Awolowo the Finance Minister. This meant that if he got what he wanted from the North he would kick the East out and if he got it from the East he would kick the North out. There and then, Zik and the Sardauna decided that this man was a treacherous person and was not the type of person they wanted to work with in a government that would usher in Nigeria’s independence. It was on that ground that Zik and the Sardauna agreed to negotiate.

During the negotiation the North insisted that they should produce the Prime Minister, otherwise they were not ready for independence. In the agreement signed at the Lancaster House, it was agreed that if any Region said that they were not ready for independence, independence for Nigeria would be postponed indefinitely until all regions were ready. The North took advantage of that. Zik and the top leaders of the NCNC said having fought for independence and sacrificed so much, it was better to allow the North produce the Prime Minister so that the independence would be achieved.

hows the security situation in the east compared to Lagos or Abuja?

Poor security is a non-terminal problem. It can be resolved with ease. Moreover, how many cases of kidnapping have you heard from the East since this year? Is Lagos really safer than the East? Check the cases of robbery and other violent crimes in Lagos versus the East.

It has nothing to do with home-based or not.
It has more to do with profit and benefit. Abuja and Lagos are more Urban, modernized and more recognized.
The location is going to pave way for more recognition from the outside world.

Crap. Atiku has an American university tucked away somwhere in Yola-one of the most outlandish places in Nigeria. The last time I checked many foreigners are teaching there and that uni is one of the best in Nigeria. Yola is not as developed as the cities in Igboland. My brothers are just sick, am sorry.

Why must it still be in Abuja?

SOME of my Igbo brothers are so silly. They prefer to invest in Lagos and Abuja than at home. What is wrong with establishing the uni in Igboland, assuming the promoter (Dr. Ifeanyi Obiakor, clearly an Igbo man) has a significant involvement in the financial aspect (presumably so)? Atiku built his own American university right in his village and people from all walks of life still attend. If your uni is exceptional, people will attend from wherever. What do these Igbos who prefer to invest outside Igboland drink? Kai-kai or burukutu?
