Police seize truck load of ammunition
19 March, 2010 04:25:00 LUKKEY ABAWURU and STEVE OKO, Umuahia

DETECTIVES from Federal Anti Robbery Squad (FARS), Adeniji Adele, Lagos have intercepted truck load of arms and ammunition worth over N12 million.

Also four persons who allegedly imported the ammunition have been arrested. They are being detained by FARS at Adeniji Adele.

Daily Champion gathered that the over 100,000 rounds of ammunition were en route to Onitsha in Anambra State before policemen, acting on a tip off, intercepted a Leyland truck with registration XD749AAA conveying the lethal AA and BB live cartridges at Shaki, a boarder town between Oyo and Benin Republic.

Displaying the ammunition before newsmen at Adeniji Adele, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Investigations, Mr. Isreal Ajao said a notorious gun dealer, Mr. Martins Anokwara, a native of Uga in Anambra state allegedly imported the ammunition from an undisclosed neighbouring country. He gave the names of other members of the syndicates as Kolawale Moshhod, Rafiu Akanji and Rafiu Isola.

The DIG said the suspects concealed the ammunition inside 32 wielded metal drums and cartons of various sizes, packaged, covered and disguised under sacks containing charcoal bags in the upper layer of the truck.

Ajao, a former commissioner of police in Lagos said luck ran out of the suspects when policemen who hitherto laid ambush at the border town of Shaki confronted them.

He said: "The effort to rid the society of dangerous weapons as well as arms and ammunition into the country paid off last week through the intelligence led strategy encouraged by the FARS, displayed gallantry by arresting four men who masterminded the importation of 100.000 cat ridges.

"Policemen who laid ambush for them at Ayo area of Shaki flagged down the driver, Raifu Akanji and his motor boy, Rafiu Isola were both apprehended. They led police to where the dealer was and he was arrested. Kolawale escaped during operation but was later nabbed."

He said the truck and the suspects were later brought to Lagos for further verification. When the truck was searched, a serviceable Bereta pistol with no 852665 with 55 rounds of ammunition was also discovered in a black hand bag concealed in one of the metal drums.’’

Akao added that the men of FARS deployed to Idiroko border also arrested car snatchers who were attempting to cross alleged stolen cars from Nigeria to Republic of Benin.

Gunmen kill businessman, rob judge, ex-guber candidate
From James Sowole in Akure, 03.05.2010

The man was killed at a point between the Ala Police Station and Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) station by six men who rode on three motor cycles popularly called okada.

THISDAY gathered from an eye witness close to the scene that the gunmen in an attempt to force the deceased vehicle, a 2008 Toyota Avensis car with the registration Number LAGOS CY 888 FST to stop, shot severally into its tyres all of which missed their target.

However, the gunmen later levelled up with the vehicle being driven by the deceased as he was moving towards Ala Road which was some metres to the SARS station. As the man stopped, the gunmen fired several shots on him killing him instantly after which they opened the boot of his car and removed something which those close by said they did not know.

The yesterday’s killing of Adegbenro came less than 24 hours after another businessman, Mr Dayo Ogunmolayi, 49 , was shot by armed robbers who operated in similar manner (using okada) at the Ijapo Estate Gate.

Ogunmolayi, a cocoa merchant, it was learnt was shot for his refusal to surrender his bag that contained N1.4million and surrender the car of his Toyota Camry with the registration number, ONDO AJ 992 WWW , to the robbers.

The businessman was confirmed dead at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, where he was rushed.

The robbers however, could not go away with the money. On the same day (Wednesday), a four man gang which operated in a Golf car painted in Ondo State commercial taxi colour, robbed an unidentified judge and the former gubernatorial candidate of Action Congress (AC), Hon Ademola Adegoroye, in the 2007 Election in front of a new generation bank at Alagbaka area of the state capital.

A source said the judge who had just withdrawn some money from a bank was trailed by the robbers on his way home shooting sporadically into the air to scare the judge at a point close to the official of the Commissioner of Police for the state command. The quick response of the escorts of the police commissioner made the robbers to flee the scene but not until they had removed the bag that contained the money and the pistol of the judge’s police orderly. Confirming the incidents, Police Public Relations Officer for the Ondo State Command, Alhaji Aremu Adeniran, said the command had summoned the leadership of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), and that of the Taxi unit of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to a meeting, considering the mode of operation of the gangs. The PPRO said the police is on top of the situation to ensure that the robbers are arrested.

Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, closure cripples economic activities in South-East
By Chinedu Eze, 03.04.2010

Aviation

Economic activities in the South East, especially in Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi and some parts of Abia have been adversely affected by the closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport , Enugu , which is the fourth busiest airport in the country and the one that has proximity advantage over most parts of the region.

Businessmen and women, including political office holders and corporate organisations that use the airport have been finding it difficult coordinating businesses from other parts of the country, following the closure. The closure, it was gathered has impinged on the movement of the people to and from the zone, as air transport remains the fastest means of transport. The situation is even exacerbated by the fact that most roads criss-crossing the country are in deplorable conditions.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) started rehabilitation work on the runway of the airport late last year and on February 10, the agency closed it, saying it would remain shut until work is completed. The work will last for about 12 months.

The objective of FAAN is to expand the runway so that it would be able to accommodate large body aircraft. The project involves the extension of the length of the runway from the present 2, 400 meters long to 3000 meters (or three kilometers). The width, which is presently 45 meters would be extended to 60 meters.

Recently, officials of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) had lamented how the closure of the airport is crippling businesses in the South East. They complained that FAAN did not provide alternative airport close to the one closed, because traveling by road to Owerri airport, which is closest to Enugu, will take a prospective air passenger two hours from Awka, capital of Anambra; two and half hours from Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi and also two hours from Enugu, capital of Enugu State.

While it takes prospective air passenger one hour from Onitsha to Owerri, it will take a passengers from Nsukka more than three hours to Owerri airport to board flight to any other part of the country. Enugu airport is located at the centre of the aforementioned three states as it would take such passengers less than one hour to travel from Awka, Abakaliki and Nsukka to the Enugu Airport.

The President of ECCIMA, Okechukwu Nwadinobi, told THISDAY on Tuesday: “We have noted that this (the closure of the airport) will further cripple the economy of the South East, as the Akanu Ibiam Airport remains a major gateway to the East. With the bad state of the roads in the zone, and absence of rail transport system, our businessmen and women have no alternative as the nearest alternative airport is more than two hours away to catch a 45 minutes flight.”

Professor Okechukwu Nwosu, the Deputy President of the organisation, who spoke on behalf of the President when the officials of ECCIMA paid a courtesy call on THISDAY, urged the Federal Government and the Governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime to ensure that the runway extension was “carried out in a way that will not disrupt regular flight operations and stifle business” in the region.

FAAN management, which expressed sympathy with the people of the region, said that even as the airport was closed, helicopters could still land there, but did not express any hope that the closure would not last 12 months as earlier planned.

Sky Blue:

Another reality from a different perspective is that we would finally be able to move away from ethnic politics and focus on the issues when election comes around (development). I don't care if the president comes from the north for the next 100 years, as long as it is the best man for the job that will give the whole nation development, unity, and equity. Just because you see it all through the glasses of ethnicity doesn't mean everybody else does, so please stop trying to speak for everyone. The idea of who the best man for the job is would probably be subjective, but it sure would be refreshing to have debates about who we think the best man for the job is, rather than wether the man is from the predestined ethnic group for the particular time; that way, the cream rises to the top.

It is quite ironic that Nigerians seem to have this obsession with Obama. It is funny and ironic because if Obama was a Nigerian, among the myriads of factors stopping him from rising to power would probably be ethnicity. So we could have all believed he was the best man for the job, but of course if he wasn't from the North West and isn't muslim, then he could as well go peddle his "change" message somewehere else. Yet Nigerians shouting for rotational presidency would open their mouth and shout Obama Obama America. LOL.

You should be concerned with who leads you when you have cabals that dictate what goes as is the case now. What cabal that is deemed good for the hausa is definitely good also for the Yoruba, Igbo, Ijaw, Calabar, Bini, Fulani, Tiv, etc.

Rotational presidency will always work until 2015 after the north has completed their tenure. By 2015, there will be electoral reform at all levels including in PDP, they(ALWAYS ruling party) will come up with a new constitution abolishing the zoning rule and the IBOs will go to war again. Nigeria scatter scatter! The prophesy from CIA,
Remember you heard it from me first!

2015 should necessarily not be the time for an Igbo to rule. I think the SS should have it first. My take for RP is not necessarily for an Igbo to be president in the short run (2015) but that the possibility be established that anybody from the over 250 ethnic group which makes up the six different zones will be able to share in leadership at its very peak. The alternative to RP is that one zone will lord it over others perpetually and guess what, people will still come out crying.

Okokomeji

What blatancy. Did the Yoruba earn the position that was practically given to them in 1999-2007, with two of the candidates coming from their end? How has Jonathan or the SS earned the position in 2015, if not for rotational presidency? Igbos may arguably have the highest single ethnic population in Nigeria but how does that help them win election in Nigeria when you need to win 25% from each state to be able to be president? How many Igbo states are there? Solely Igbo votes for an Igbo man cannot make that person a president of Nigeria. The Yoruba did not vote significantly for OBj in 1999, yet he became the president. The Yoruba always voted 100% for Awo, yet he could not become the president. Stop your idiotic rants and put on a thinking cap, for once. Thanks.

News Report: Nigeria's Acting President Knew About President's Home Coming And Deployment Of Soldiers At Airport

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

chidi opara reports can now report that Nigeria's Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, contrary to media reports, knew about the home coming of President Umaru Yar'Adua atleast twelve hours before the commencement of the journey from Saudi Arabia.

Reliable contacts in the Nigerian Presidency informed us that as soon as the President was discharched from hosptal at the prompting of his first wife, Turai Yar'Adua and other close associates, the Saudi King phoned to inform the Acting President of the development. We also learnt that the Nigerian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia also called to inform the Acting President.

chidi opara reports have confirmed that as soon as the Acting President learnt of the President's discharge from hospital, he sought to know when the President would be home, but no definite date was given to him. "They only told him that Mr. President would be back in a few days time", one contact revealed.

This lack of knowledge of a definite date, we learnt, did not stop the Acting President from making logistics available to the President's family. For instance, even though the Saudi King would still have made his private Air Ambulance available for the President's journey, he however, requested that the Nigerian government should officially request for it, which we learnt authoritatively that the Acting President did.

A low level but strategically placed contact at the Nigerian Army Headquarters informed us that the Acting President signed the instrument for the deployment of soldiers to the Airport at about 5.13pm on Monday 22nd february 2010. chidi opara reports was not able to access this instrument at the time of preparing this report.

We can however report that at the moment, the Acting President is still reaching out to the Yar'Adua group with pledges of loyalty and co-operation especially in the forthcoming Crude Oil licenses bids. We also learnt that though the group does not trust the Acting President, they have however resolved to work with him.

An unconfirmed information at our disposal has it that there is a plan by an International crude oil syndicate with a cell in Nigeria, who have benefitted immensely from the Yar'Adua Administration to sponsor a military take over of government if Yar'Adua is edged out of government. This plan is allegedly been cordinated by an Italian Oil and Gas tycoon based in Portharcourt, Rivers State.

Mimiko inaugurates Ore Sunshine Mega City Plaza

Sunday Aborisade, Akure

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on Monday inaugurated the Ore Sunshine Mega City Plaza project which the governor said would be built on 153 hectares of land on the Ore-Sagamu Expressway.

Gov Rahman Mimiko of Ondo State

At the event, the governor said the project was part of his government's plan to make the town a commercial hub in the South West.

Our correspondent gathered that the first phase of the project would cost N5bn.

He also said the project would address the perennial traffic snarl on the ever busy Benin-Ore Expressway which is the major gateway to the South-East and South-South geo-political zones of the country.

He said his administration decided to turn the challenges posed by the chaotic traffic situation in the Ore area to opportunities by constructing an effective Mega Travel Plaza with facilities for travelers, visitors and residents of the town.

Mimiko explained that the plaza would accommodate a 1, 000 car parking lot, shopping malls, hospitals, five star hotels, warehouses, helipad, police station, banks, prayer grounds, restaurants, fire stations and housing estates, among others.

He said, "With the strategic location of this project along the Ore-Sagamu Expressway on an expanse of 153 hectares and the quality of services to be provided, we are creating a world class industrial and commercial complex of unbeatable standard in the country"

The governor hinted that the project would be actualised under a private-public sector joint partnership with the state providing the land in a choice area.

He noted that the project will boost economic growth and development in the town which served as a melting point for all ethnic groups in the country.

Mimiko said the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation was partnering with the state government to execute its gas production project while deep sea ports would be created to enhance economic development of the state.

"The basic idea behind the project is to stimulate the economy of the state and provide employment opportunities for our teeming youths in Ondo State." He added.

The Ekiti State Government has donated N1m toward the building of Oduduwa House in Kano.

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Sikiru Lawal, announced the donation in Ado-Ekiti on Monday when officials of the Yoruba Community in Kano State paid him a courtesy visit.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the state government also announced the release of N250,000 for the upkeep of the members of the Executive Council of the Yoruba Community in Kano State.

Lawal explained that the donations were in appreciation of the responsible manner in which Yoruba indigenes living in Kano State had conducted themselves over the years.

“You are good ambassadors of the Yoruba race in Kano State, and we are very proud of you. We will always identify with your programmes and projects,” the deputy governors added.

Lawal urged other states in the South West to make substantial contributions to the project.

The President of the Yoruba Community in Kano, Chief Ezekiel Fasakin, had earlier explained that the Oduduwa House would be a unifying object for all Yoruba indigenes living in Kano with a population of some two million people.

“It is ridiculous that the Yoruba don’t have their own House in Kano. We believe that with your support, we can have a befitting House in the state. It is long overdue,” he added.

Chief Adebayo Mikhail, the Special Adviser to Kano State Governor on Inter-community Relations, who led the group, said his appointment was to facilitate the cooperation between Kano State and other Yoruba speaking states.

He added that the Kano State Government was very keen about the affairs of the Yoruba residing in the state.
