Shadomaan7: Hello everyone, this thread has been an inspiration and a source of blessing. I have some questions that’s bothering my mind while trying to fill the DS-160 form and book interview.
My Background: Got applied to LSU for master’s degree, fall 2021 session. GRE score of 320.
1. I have a brother in the USA and he entered as F-1 student but later got a job and he is currently in H-1B status. Should I mention his name on my DS-160 and will this affect my visa chances on the interview day judging that there is change of status on my brother part and that might give a red flag about my own intentions.
The summary is that will having a brother in USA with his status changed from F-1 to H-1B affect my visa chances at the embassy? If yes, can I just not mention I have a family on my DS-160?
2. I got tuition waiver from the school but still have like $22k on my I-20 as the estimated living expenses and books. Can this much $$ have a negative effect on my visa chances even looking at the fact that I got full tuition waiver?
I will be glad if someone can please answer my question and I am also open to people asking me questions about admission, I will reply to those that I am confident of replying to.
Thanks, Shadowman The VO would think that you wanna follow the same path that your brother followed. As for the deficit of $22k, you need to show financial documents of you or your that you can cover it. By the way, what is your undergraduate GPA? |

Pefuele: Every question that a VO ask has a meaning:
What is taking you to the US. You spoke too much. Who doesn't know that SIT is prestigious in NJ? Infact, that point is generic. Is like you are going to Carnegie Mellon University and you are still telling the VO it is prestigious. For guys that doesn't have funding there are three questions that you should talk a lot,why this school, why this course & what does your sponsor do( you should praise your sponsor well here except your sponsor is a rich public figure so you dnt need to talk too much). You should be able to defend all what you say.
What this degree do for you: Your response are generic. Why are you interested in Network protection & data security? How will these courses help your career? What promotion are you seeking? To IT Manager? You should back your points with examples.
Who is Paying: My mother is okay. *I have the account statement here* shows desperation and you shouldn't do that. Only when the VO ask for any evidence to support your mums sponsor is when you ask: Do you mean like a Bank Statement? Then you can bring it out. Unless VO ask for a document dnt push for it.
What does she do: You played it low! My mum is a respected real estate developer in Oyo State. She has acquired land worth over N300m & has several developed lands worth more than N100m.My mum has also patnered with the Oyo State Government to provide lands to Civil Servants & to several big wigs in the entertainment industry...... you should praise your sponsor.
How many staffs does she have: The VO wants to know how many people your mum is feeding that's why there's a follow-up question of how much does she earns annually & you answered that with nervousness. So, get the logic! Next time check your SOA well to know the net cash flows per month and get a rough estimate for a year by multiply by 12. There are a lot of questions on SOA that I can't talk about here that the VO can ask.
Who does she live with? She wants to know whether some guys at home also depend on your mum or how close you are with your mum.
Who do you stay with: whether alone or your fiancee is wrong. It doesn't make sense to be married and staying with your fiancee and your mum is sponsoring your Education. It will make more sense if you and your fiancee are sponsoring it ,your fiancee is sponsoring or you are sponsoring.
Normally, an ideal DS-160 should look like this. You are single, you are staying with your mum and your mum is sponsoring your Education. Thanks for your response. I get you But at the end of the day, it still depends on your VO’s mentality. There was a guy who answered all his questions just like you have outlined or even better and still got a denial. Everyone in the queue was shocked! Things dey happen true true |

NigPatriot: Thank you for sharing your transcript. I'm certain many lessons can be learnt from there.
Your case scenario, you were nervous. Did you undergo any mock interview before your interview date?.
Also, if you have another school with a lesser COA then you can switch when reapplying and back it up with a cogent reason. If you want to stick with stevens and You say you have the money to pay the fees without funding, but convincing the VO that you do, is something you have to go back to the drawing board to figure how?.
N.B: as someone singlehandedly pointed, you raised a claim that it's almost impossible to get visa without funding. It's ironic you also fall in that category, I can imagine how that thought process must have rigmaroled your mindset. I didn’t undergo any mock interview. This was my first time, I have learnt my lesson and I’ll come back harder and stronger. |

Edaniels9: This is so untrue. I got my visa approved yesterday. I did my BSC in electrical engineering and I am going for my masters in informatics.
I just told the VO that I wanted to change careers.
Guys just be confident, do your research and know what to say.
But most of all involve God.
Wish you all the best. Informatics is not that off. |

Another tip for intending interviewees!!!
If your masters course of study is far unrelated to your Bachelors degree!
Except you are going for an MBA
Straight denial!!
2 guys were denied yesterday by 2 different VO’s for that reason.
The question they would ask you is why the sudden change in career? And if you can’t defend yourself well, denial letter
Also, avoid filling things or saying things that would lead to unnecessary question you cannot defend. |

PotentialNurse: There is something about using work place promotion as a reason to go for a masters degree abroad.
I don’t know if you wrote the amount you earn in your Ds-160 form. But If you earn between 300k-700k, your mom won’t want to spend about 27million each year for 2 years so you would come back to earn a salary increase of at most 700k-1million which is even an exaggeration in my part.
BGSU and KSU might not be as highly ranked at SIT, the VO knows if you indeed got admitted to the schools, you will opt for one of them due to affordability than go to SIT with that HUGE COA. Thanks so much for your response. Now I see why I got denied I put in my salary in my DS-160 form What I filled in was 250k monthly. I was just being honest in my application. So I should have lied in the form ? |

At the end of the day, your interview and decision depends on your VO! Pray that Baba God will bring you to a sensible VO who is mature and non sentimental, and non discriminatory.
Some of these VO’s look down on Nigerians too much thinking everyone is broke or poor
Abeg, it’s just like the way some Nigerians go to Babcock, Covenant etc and spend millions in fees, while others go to Federal or State schools.
I got admission to other schools, but I really wanted to go to Stevens. Because of the quality of education there. The research work of most of my would be lecturers and professors were in line with my own research. Then to crown it all, graduates from Stevens get jobs immediately.
Two weeks to the completion of your program, companies like Microsoft, Google, IBM, Facebook, US Agencies like CIA, FBI, NSA would come to the school and start scouting for people to employ.
Good luck to intending interviewees. I wish you all success |

EmeritusR: Omo you just said it na. $60k with no funding at all. You need to find another school or you ask the school for funding. It will be difficult to prove to the VO that you are going to pay that fee when you get there. Although I know of some people who got their visas with $50k without any funding but it is something that is really rare, you will need to tell the VO why you or your sponsor want to spend times 2 of that huge amount for 2 years if going for masters. Well, I was actually going to pay it. Because my family is well to do and I was with account statement with good balance. |

joesa: Visa denied in Lagos Today Please scrutinize
First time, First denial COA: $24k
VO: Good day, please pass your document: I passed it on
VO: So you're going to Liberty University for a Masters in Psychology: Me: Yes
VO: How did you know about the school
Me: Through a colleague at work: I work for a big organization and my work is computer science related:
VO: How does this course fit into what you're doing Me: To be honest, I couldn't defend it so well
VO: He reiterated: You're doing computer science-related work at bleep, how Psychology Me: My answer didn't seem clear and cogent to him
VO: How many schools did you apply to Me: 2
VO: Were you accepted? Me: yes
Now, this school gave me admission in Computer science. I chose Psychology because the admission came out first.
VO: Who is sponsoring the trip Me: My Brother
VO: What does he do Me: He works as a manager for an Oil serving company in Norway
VO: How much does he earn Me: about $4k
VO: Typing..... I am sorry, you do not qualify for a visa at this time
Planing on going again with my Computer science admission and more compelling answers
Please advise I remember when you were interviewed I was also denied yesterday They were just dishing out denials ehn I’ll post my transcript later, but for now, I’m still crying because my program starts in 2 weeks time I’ll have to defer People who got approved yesterday were mostly aged couples going for their children’s graduation ceremony Then few guys going for summer work. (I don’t even know what this is) An elderly woman going for Omugwo for her daughter was denied. Like why?? A girl on wheelchair going for medical treatment abroad was denied too. Very sad! Some students also got approved, but those with good schools, good funding, and good educational qualifications. Like GRE, TOEFL etc My reason for denial: “You don’t have the funding requirement for this program” Whereas I was with account statement o He didn’t even bother to check When he asked me how much my sponsor earns monthly. I said a particular amount. I think he calculated it to dollar on his system. By the way, I was going to Stevens, my COA is about $60k (lol) them no gree give my funding or GA |

Guys, I think I made a mistake in my DS-160 Please advise My I-20 says my sponsor is family funds My family is actually paying my tuition etc But when filling the DS-160, I saw a question that said Person/Entity paying for your trip I selected Myself as the one paying I thought they meant flight and minor trip expenses Someone is telling me now that I have made a grave mistake and it can lead to denial. That I should have put in my DS-160 that my family is paying for my trip. PS: I have already submitted the DS-160 form and I can’t edit it again |

Easiest way to get a visa is if you are -Married -Have travel history (even if it’s one country abroad) -Have good funding with little deficit

solihp: You can go back to change it. It’s a problem. You are wrong! Book number does not mean 32 or 64 pages book number is another number that exists in the passports of some other countries It does not apply to Nigeria I extensively confirmed this from an immigration officer and you can make your findings too and stop misleading people
