Crime / H-money Who Stole $1M While Arrested, Was Not In Prison, Stays At A 5 Star Hotel by mercyefe200(f): 11:04pm On Nov 20, 2019
The Nigerian Correctional Service has commenced a probe into the alleged $1 million scam perpetrated by one Olusegun Aroke, aka Hope Aroke, who is serving a 24-year jail term in Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Lagos.

The convict, who was the subject of an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, reportedly pulled the heist using a network of accomplices.

Aroke was one of the two Malaysia-based Nigerian undergraduate fraudsters arrested by the EFCC in 2012 at the 1004 Housing Estate, Victoria Island, Lagos, following a tip.
According to the EFCC, preliminary investigations revealed that the convict, against established standard practice, had access to internet and mobile phone in the correctional centre.

”Even more puzzling was the finding that Aroke got himself admitted to the Nigeria Police Hospital, Falomo, Lagos, for an undisclosed ailment and from the hospital, he would move out to lodge in hotels, meet with his wife and two children and attend other social functions,” the EFCC said in a statement on Tuesday.

But the Controller-General of Corrections, Jaáfaru Ahmed, has ordered that a comprehensive investigation into the allegation should be carried out and the recommendations immediately forwarded to his office for appropriate action.

The NCS spokesman, Controller of Corrections, Francis Enobore, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday said any official found to have aided Aroke would be sanctioned.

He started, ”Without prejudice to the outcome of the investigation, the CG wishes to assure members of the public that if any official is found to have been involved in the ignoble act, the culprit will face the consequences as prescribed by the law.”

Ahmed further stressed that the modicum of discipline and integrity required of every officer of the Correctional Service “will not be compromised under any circumstance.”

Politics / Asset Management Company Takes Over Ex-minister, Ademola Seriki's Assets by mercyefe200(f): 5:39pm On Nov 19, 2019
Properties belonging to Ademola Seriki, in Lagos and Abuja, have been taken over by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.
the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria has taken over two properties belonging to Ademola Seriki, in Lagos and Abuja, over an outstanding indebtedness of nearly N1bn.

This is sequel to the order of Justice Chuka Austine Obiozor of a Federal High Court in Lagos.

The case between AMCON and Seriki, who was a former Minister of State for Defence as well as a former Supervising Minister for Mines and Steel Development, had lingered for awhile.

AMCON said in a statement that it did not in the first instance resort to the court except when the obligor defiled all overtures from the corporation for a peaceful resolution of an obligation.

It stated, “But the case between AMCON and Ademola Seriki eventually ended up in court because all efforts made by AMCON to have the issue resolved peacefully did not yield the desired result.

“Therefore, the corporation pursued justice in court and in compliance with the order of the court of competent jurisdiction, AMCON on Monday through Oak Partners, who works for the corporation as one of its partners, having also received protective orders from the court, took possession of the said properties belonging to the former minister.

“The affected properties are those located at No. 1a & 1b, Jalupon Close, Surulere, Lagos and another at No. 4, Djibouti Crescent, a highbrow area of Wuse 2, Abuja.”

It added that the non-performing loans of Ademola Seriki were sold to AMCON by the defunct Oceanic Bank and Skye Bank.

The corporation stressed that when all efforts to amicably resolve the loans were frustrated by the former minister, prominent member of the ruling All Progressive Congress, it was left with no other choice than to refer the matter to the court.

Having looked at the case over time, the court ordered AMCON to take over the assets of the APC chieftain.

Head of Corporate Communications, AMCON, Jude Nwauzor, confirmed that corporation on Monday carried out the order as directed by the court.

Politics / Yahaya Bello Thanks The People Of Kogi State For Voting For Him For Second Term by mercyefe200(f): 5:15pm On Nov 18, 2019
Despite the obvious large scale rigging and wide spread election malpractice, the Governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello has released a statement thanking the Kogi state electorate for "voting" him into office for second time despite owing all workers in the state 36 months salary arrears and no single development for the people of the state.

Read the statement Yahaya Bello released on his victory below:

“This victory is for Kogi people that value true democracy. And we can assure that Governor Bello will not abandon his campaign slogan which expresses his desire to do more for Kogi people.

“We thank Kogites who voted for us. We also thank Kogi people who did not vote for us; they have challenged the governor to do more for them to earn their confidence.

“We urged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship by accepting the verdict of Kogi people.

We also thank the party hierarchy for throwing their weight behind the governor.

“We thank the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, security operatives and other public institutions for ensuring that the election was free, fair, credible and peaceful.

“Governor Bello will do more for Kogi, Kogites will be better for it.”

Nigerians have now settled for what they have, which is injustice and dictatorship, they have now realize there would never be a free and fair election as all the independent electoral bodies and agencies work the the ruling party.

The Nigerian government has announced plans to ban the importation of steel products into the county to encourage local investors in the sector.⁣

“My ultimate aim is that we ban steel importation into the country totally,” Nigeria’s Mines and Steel Development Minister Olamilekan Adegbite said.⁣

⁣“But before we do that, we must be able to satisfy local consumption from local production and have some excess for export, that is where we are heading,”
the minister said.⁣

⁣If it comes into effect, the ban will be a part of Nigeria’s tilt towards protectionism. The country closed its borders in August to limit smuggling in of rice and illegal export of petroleum products.⁣

Education / LASU Students To Pay N150,000 For "Second Stream" Degree Programme by mercyefe200(f): 1:09pm On Nov 15, 2019
Students of the Lagos State University will start paying a sum of N150,000 tuition fee for a second stream undergraduate programme.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, said the second stream degree programme was introduced to help deepen the entrepreneurship skills of students of the institution.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the Vice-Chancellor as saying, “Our regular Stream 1 programme tuition fee is still N25,000, while medical students pay N37,000.

“But for Stream 2 entrepreneurship programme, the tuition fee is N150,000, aside from acceptance and medical fees,”

However, Fagbohun was said to have refuted speculation that LASU had increased tuition fees for its undergraduate programmes.

It is not clear whether or not the second stream degree programme would be optional or mandatory for students of the university.

According to NAN, Fagbohun said the entrepreneurship programme, which would run along with normal undergraduate degrees, would prepare students to be self-employed and employers of labour.

The Vice-Chancellor added that “Research indicates that small-medium enterprises employ more than 80 per cent of the workforce in Nigeria.

“That is why we have a very close working relationship with SMEs, so they can impact on the university and impart right entrepreneurship skills to the students.

“Before starting, the Stream 2 entrepreneurship programme will go through all the approval processes of the university.

“Critical thing for LASU is quality assurance which means the two-stream programmes will be standard and run successfully together without any programme failing.

“We have a directorate of quality assurance that monitors every programme of the university in order to achieve best practices,” the vice-chancellor said.

He said that entrepreneurship courses would be taught only during the first year of the regular Stream 1 programme, while it would be taught throughout the duration of the Stream 2 programme.

Also speaking, Prof. Martins Anetekhan, Director, LASU Centre for Entrepreneur, said the university was concerned about widespread unemployment among graduates of Nigerian universities.

“After the investigation, we realised that most graduates are not getting jobs because the available job vacancies can not accommodate them.

“It means they have to be skillful and adjust their mindset to become entrepreneurs who can also employ others and contribute to national development.

“Apart from giving them knowledge on normal degree programme, LASU introduced Stream 2 programme so they can also acquire some skills, knowledge through entrepreneurship programmes,” he said.

Anetekhan said that there were 79 different areas of entrepreneurship for the Stream 2 programme and teaching had been arranged such that it would not clash with the normal degree programmes.

“We should all know that entrepreneurship programme is the delivery of handsome skills and LASU partnered with many small scale industries to teach the students,” he said.
