Speaking of Starting small and been innovative, I don't know how many people have read this article on techloy about a Nigerian mobile gaming company Founded by Abiola Olaniran. His games have gotten up to a million downloads worldwide. http://techloy.com/2013/08/06/gamsole/ |
Ajibel: Hmm, everyone has complained and lamented, shared and outline same and similar thoughts that contributed to the dire situation and challenge we are facing buh as usual we Nigerians would criticise and not profer solution. So for a teenager/youth who wants to launch start a start up, what path should he followThe truth is like we have all said, a lot of obstacles stand b4 any1 trying to build a startup mostly without finance. However the answer to the question of "Can we succeed or @least survive without any major finance, Structure and other obstacles?" Is YES WE CAN. Teachnology today has greatly bridge the gap btw startups, small businesses and Large companies. Individual entrepreneurs with a Laptop and Internet connection can have access to data management services, cloud computing, Business mgt softwares in SaaS, and all sort of Information they need to grow, all this at very minimize fees (some even for free!). So where do we start from? 1) Understanding that being an entrepreneur isn't a ride in the park. Its tough, rough and frustrating, even in developed countries. So complaining about what we don't have won't change much. But with any luck the end is always worth it. 2) Find your peers. Motivation is a medicine that helps every entrepreneur continue to fight for what they believe. I get amazed at how little entrepreneurs I see at great event especially in Lagos. Events like TEDx and d likes expose entrepreneurs to meet other great minds, entrepreneurs and even investors and capitalist. I still remember meeting "chinedu echerue" at TEDx Ikoyi last year. 3) Start already, but start small. Most startups even in developed countries are advised to start small and gradually grow. Its funny wen pple talk abt funding while half of the biggest internet companies today all started in some boys dom room! Except u don't hv access to a Laptop and say internet and lack the proper programming skills, I don't see why you can't start small. 4) Finally have a plan. In fact have plans from A - D if possible. Know what you need to succeed, know who has it or where it is and device a strategy to get it! 5) Lastly, Don't give up! I hope this helps someone ![]() |
Emah1: Pls i tried to upgrading my laptop dell D810 window 7, it did not work so when i tried restarting it it was showing me BOOTMGR is missing. ''press curl+alt+del to restart''Am guessing u tried to upgrade to windows 8. When u say "it didn't work" am guessing u didn't "eida complete the installation". To fix try this: 1. Restart the PC. The BOOTMGR error could be a fluke. 2. If it still shows the error, Check your optical drives, USB ports, and floppy drives for media. Often times, the "BOOTMGR is Missing" error will appear if your PC is trying to boot from a non-bootable disc, external drive, or floppy disk. 3. Also, Check the boot sequence in BIOS and make sure the correct hard drive is set. 4. If those don't work, Perform a Startup Repair of Windows. This type of installation should replace any missing or corrupt files, including BOOTMGR. |
sino: You have to provide more info, we ain't wizards here lolLOL. I tire ooo |
vanunu: I thought Chinedu Echerue was paid $1billion by Apple for his site.I doubt. The amount was never disclosed. |
Ajibel: Bro, sorry u've got to research well on starting up. Maybe thats why u havent come up with a start up. Do u think founders of those big companies u mentioned waited for angels before startingGbam!!! |
bigdot1759: must we be follower ? must africa go into something like fbk & the rest ? or is that the only thing we can do to bring popularity to the contnent? why can't we come together & meditate what even the number one & wotld power 'll never think of in the next 100yrs. Can't Nigeria or African programmers & the likes in I. T INDUSTRY come 2gether to think of this?We mustnt be. In fact your suggestion is in line with the idea behind the article. It is time we start to lead too. |
p.josh:Very true. Funding is key. But I will still say again "Innovation" 1st. Facebook, google and the likes had funding but dey innovative and created something first. The main thing most people don't realise is "U have 2 start small!". Instagram started small. They created something and 2years later it was sold for $1billion. U can't build facebook in a fews weeks or months. Even Facebook took over a year b4 getting any major funding. The simple fact is this: until u build something worth investing in...its just another so-called billion $ idea. |
mysteko: This is my third post on profile! I'm not a programmer or a web developer nor am I a graphic designer. I'm however a software computer technician and came up with a briliant idea however I sit here on my laptop looking at my project on my localhost but lack the finance to launch it.I totally understand how you feel. I have been I that position myself. But I don't still believe in quitting or giving up. Plainly speaking, if "Seun" had, I wonder which forum we do be having this discussion. Noting that this wasn't the first or second forum seun designed bt he still persisted and here we are today on NAIRALAND! |
fizboy1: The fact is dat africans naturally dont think beyond d box of jst making little change for upkeep..in other advanced countries kids are exploring and inventing while in africa a computer graduate wld still be struggling to create a simple website from an existing app..I hear people talking of nairalandLMAOO!!!!!! |
grandstar: nonsense article. nairaland alone proves this wrong. we also have jumia, konga, saharareporters etc. some have even been bought by foreigners. i have a billion dollar idea which i plan to launch in future and then sell. for now i dey chop beans.Jumia, konga and likes have made an impact yes but locally. But can jumia go over to the uk or usa and compete for market share *coughs*Get d picture? |
Joavid: so we now know the problems, how do we solve them??So people are already making an effort for change. Hubs like Cchub (Co-creation hub) are making an impact. The truth is funding is key but producing some what funding is 1st most important. |
Zikdik: Who needs a Facebook,Google,Yahoo,e.t.c when you've got a Nairaland? With all due respect to seun, Nairaland has made us proud yet we're talking of global ideas not local. Get the picture right! |
Pls and if any1 has or knows any new apps or software out there that seems promise I would for them to. Share it ![]() |
Javanian: One thing i know for sure, what Africa isn't lacking is talentTalent? From what perspective? Not good enough programming skills? |
Why Africa May Never Produce A Facebook, Groupon, Zynga Or Google http://www.forbes.com/sites/mfonobongnsehe/2011/04/07/why-africa-may-never-produce-a-facebook-groupon-zynga-or-google/ This was the title of a post by an african reporter on Forbes Africa. As I read the post I couldn't disagree with the writers point. But I still refused to believe africa can't or doesn't have the capability to produce $billion Internet companies. More even now am interested in knowing or finding out about the ground breaking ideas out there. Because I believe before funding there must be ground shaking ideas and innovations. The writer did make mention of a few but (I stand to be corrected that) we still lack a lot. So my thought and question has been rephrased from the reporter's. Where are all Nigeria's programmers and developers? If not even web apps, Where are the new android and iOs apps? Why don't we have them crawling all over the place? The mobile platforms are speedingly taken over. Plus from my little research and understanding the cost/effort to produce these apps have greatly been reduced by there inventors. Sure, We have produced the likes of jobberman and Iroko yet one can still say these are not industry disruptive companies. Finally, Someone might ask "why haven't I produced mine?" Well I have always enjoyed been on the non-tech (idea guy) side of the game. But we all know many tech guyz in nigeria aren't ready to grow startups (I stand to be corrected again). They do would rather aim for jobs with the oil companies. Have got 1st hand experience on this myself even with some NL programmers. So recently have decided to jump in and start building programming skills. Cos I really really just hate this Article Title! Now fellow geeks let's hear your thoughts... |
onegig: good advise though but rams don't give whooping sounds. I guess its the fan. if they happen to be bad or turn bad your system would not even come up. Thats when the caps lock flashes five times in some systems or continuos beeps.Whooping sound? Hmmm Ok. I agree it Could be the fan then. However its troubleshooting though so you never really b sure where d prob is. |
onegig: you talked about p3? What os are you installing? Check the ram and ruffle things a bit.. Also remove the processor which is under the system fan and clean by blowing. Be careful. But wait before you proceed..does it give that beep when you start that indicates its working and does the keyboard led lights flash continuorly?@onegig, b4 all that, I thk he said "The desktop was slow and he tried to run an installation, which didn't complete!". That at first would have cause d pc not to boot or what do you think? Secondly a p3 system? Am sorry but being slow shouldn't b an unexpected issue. Except the system isn't coming on or displaying anything, My advise is he restarts and completes installation b4 going under d hood. |
ok.gerald:Mostly likely RAM. Probably one of both RAM is bad your system is now running on say 1GB instead of 2GB. Perform a simple test. Open the RAM area and Remove one of them. Close back and restart. If the sound still occurs, shutdown. Insert the RAM back and remove the other and then restart again. Let's know if the sound still occurs |
johnstar: Bt my mtn modem is already installedThat is your windows firewall. If every other thing is working right then It might be the one blocking the network. Click "yes" to allow the software. Then try connecting to the internet with your mtn software. Also check if the mtn network is saved as a home network or public network. Public networks are usually restricted. If no head way still, try uninstalling the mtn software and reinstalling it. And make sure to allow it thru your firewall or save has a home network. |
LBanks: K, thanks @ MeshybizzoSorry. My mistake. You can't backup installed application. You might have to lose them. But any recently create or edited files will remain. |
baani: please people i still havent been able to resolve getting the usb ports on my desktop to work, i would appreciate your help. i got a response from someone here but i cant do all tht he said i cant use the keyboard on the system. (its only usb on the desktop, nothing like pci as an option). pls helpI thkin the first thing to check is if the usb ports are disabled or faulty. Goto device manager and check the properties. If they are faulty probably missing drivers click "update" or goto manufacturers site to download them. If they disbled then enable dem. Also b4 dis b sure its not the usb drive u r trying 2 connect that is faulty. If all these isn't the case I thk I do go with the advice of getting a new usb adapter. |
LBanks: @ Knights Templer, I appreciate your timely response to my predicament. My wireless is still working because when i went to a cybercafe yesterday i noticed that if i go to settings, the wireless indicator (or icon) there indicated that network is available but when i click on it, no response. Now when i came back to the desktop, the wireless icon on the taskbar was still showing me no available network and also not responding to click as well, so i believe it's an OS problem as U suggested. But my problem with restoring my laptop now is i don't want to lose my installed applications. Please is it possible 4 me to backup the installed applications and restore the laptop?Sorry. My mistake. You can't backup installed application. You might have to lose them. But any recently create or edited files will remain. |
onyekabe: Please help, my hp compaq just fell from me and the screen went off, i put off and on it, it refuse to display on the screen. The model is hp compaq presario cq 50 110usI think 2 device might be involved here: your screen and hard drive. So first check for screen. When you power on d pc does the screen display at all? If it does then problem most likely isn't with your screen. If it doesn't two things could have happen. 1. The cable connected to your screen frm the board might have dislodged. So u hv 2 open and fix it well (my advice get pro help if u hvnt done this b4) 2. Your screen ink box is broken. The soln 2 this one is simple. You get a new screen! But like I said if isn't your screen and it displays wen u turn on then check ur hard drive. Does it make any sound? Do you pc lights come on? I think if its ur hard drive the pc should @least display Manufacturers logo and then present an error. Lastly, memory been dislodged am not so sure. Chances of that happening in a laptop would probably damage ur board itsef. |
johnstar: Pls help o, I dnt knw wats wrong wit my pc, my modem network is nt showing on my pc, bt its showing nd connecting in my own broda pc, pls help oIf it works on your broda pc means fault is from urs. First thing, we need to know if the computer sees the modem at all. Does ur pc indicates that a device was connected? Or does the modem software autoruns? If any of that doesn't happen then try these: 1) Check and switch usb port to see if the modem works on another port 2) If it doesn't try any other flash drive just to be sure your usb ports are working 3) If they are, goto device manager and check if your network adapter is disabled or fault. However if ur pc can see the modem, means might be modem software issue or network settings issue. |
