Politics / Geometric Power Project Dear To My Heart, Will Rejuvenate Economic - Gov Otti by Metrix147: 12:50pm On Feb 27
Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti says the Geometric Power Project inaugurated by his administration on Monday in Osisioma has the potential of rejuvenating economic and social growth in the state.

The governor stated this in his speech during the project inauguration done by Vice President, Kashim Shettima.

The governor while emphasizing that the project is very special and dear to his heart added that it will position the state as a preferred destination for enterprise growth, family life, and leisure.

He applauded the former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, for giving the initial waivers to Geometric, which helped in de-risking the transaction.

He added, "I thank specifically, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, CFR, who was the Chairman of Diamond Bank at the time, and who played a significant role in the resolution of the ownership tussle of the ring fence tussle. I cannot fail to recognise Prof. Okey Oramah, who got Afreximbank, his bank, to support the project with the required funding to get to the last mile. Many thanks to Engnr Mele Kyari, the GMD of NNPC, who God used to solve the gas problem.

"This city is very pivotal to the economic trajectory of Nigeria and the West Africa region, and I knew for a fact that if we got the fundamentals right, Aba would not just be a city that makes millionaires of dreamers, it would become, a land of solutions to the many socio-economic problems that assail us – including worrisome level of youth unemployment and pervasive poverty.

"My faith in Aba as an economic powerhouse meant that when I first saw the proposal for the Geometric Integrated Power Plant, I knew I had to be involved immediately because if just 50% of what had been proposed could be achieved, the industrial output from this great city and its environs would triple and millions of new jobs would be created directly and indirectly in the short to medium term.

While underlining that the Senatorial District is lucky to have the former Chief Whip of the Senate as its representative at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, he took a swipe at Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe from Abia south for not doing enough despite spending over 16 years in the senate.

"As far as I'm concerned, Orji Uzor Kalu is the best when it comes to project implementation across Nigeria. We hear reports, we hear news, the man has not rested. He has a large heart, I have worked with him from 1999 till date. It's because of him I came back to APC", he noted.

Education / Damage At Michael Okpara University Heartbreaking, Will Cost N2bn To Repair by Metrix147: 5:47pm On Feb 12
Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency of Abia State, Hon. Obi Aguocha has expressed regret over the damage done at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) in a recent protest by students of the institution, saying it's huge and heartbreaking.

He said it would cost at least N2bn to fix the damages which include burnt down buildings, windows and doors shattered, fences felled, and other infrastructural damages.

He told ABN TV on Friday that he has met with the management of the university to see ways the school could be reopened for academic activities to resume so that final-year students could complete their examinations.

ABN TV recalls that the students had engaged in demonstration on Tuesday over a new policy of the school which mandates students to complete the payment of their fees before they could be allowed to take part in examinations.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe accused miscreants of being responsible for the attack.

Hon. Aguocha said he visited communities bordering the institution, including the traditional ruler of Amaoba community, His Royal Majesty, Eze Otuwa, his Elders-in-Council, and Traditional Cabinet with a view to ascertain the remote and immediate cause of the crisis.

"The level of destruction in the institution, the buildings that were burnt, the windows that were broken, the university fences that were felled, for me it should not have been so.

"It would require about N2bn to reconstruct fully, to bring the university the way it was before the crisis", he noted.

The lawmaker noted that no level of aggravation warrants the level of damage done on the infrastructure of the university.

He therefore appealed to the management of the university to consider reopening it for resumption of academic activities.

According to him, a committee has been set up by the university which will liaise with him on the amicable resolution of the issues.

Education / I'll Make ABSU The Envy Of Other Nigerian Tertiary Institutions, Gov. Otti Vows by Metrix147: 2:05pm On Jan 31
Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has vowed that his government would look into issues confronting the Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, to resolve them and make the school the envy of other tertiary institutions in the country.

Governor Otti spoke on Tuesday when he met with the executives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ABSU Chapter, led by the Zonal Coordinator (ASUU National), Calabar Zone, Dr. Happiness Uduak.

The union executives according to a statement made available to ABN TV by the chief press secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said they had come to thank the Governor for taking interest in their welfare by paying their salaries and other benefits, promptly, since he assumed office on May 29, 2023, but like Oliver Twist, ask for more.

Consequently, they seized the opportunity to enumerate several other challenges confronting the University and members of the academic staff, which, though they acknowledged preceded the present administration, appealed to the Governor to use his good office and intervene.

According to the statement, the Governor while noting that a lot needed to be done to fix the institution, said the demands of the Union were not unreasonable and added that government would do everything within its capacity to assist the University.

He expressed surprise over "18-months salary differential" the union said its members in Abia were being owed, between 2009-2010, as well as 11 months salary arrears, owed the lecturers by the previous administration.

Governor Otti was of the view that Universities, especially when they are not new, should be run independently of government subvention, and advised members of the union to rather evolve ways to make the University financially independent.

He said; "It is important that we put on our thinking cap and remove our begging cap because this whole idea of begging is the problem that we have in Nigeria.

"Even as a country, we keep begging, we keep borrowing and we need to think of being financially independent.

"Even from research alone, if anything is happening in the University, we should be able to generate enough resources to do a few things.

"We need to begin to think of how to make our Universities financially independent. Let us rechannel our ABSU ASUU to begin to think of how they can contribute to making the University independent, and I will support you.

"We need to think in that direction because it is more sustainable".

Politics / Kalu: I Left $4 Billion Balance Sheet In My Companies Before Joining Politics by Metrix147: 12:12pm On Jan 30
Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said he left at least $4bn balance sheet generated from his companies in 1998 before joining politics, saying he didn't start life as a politician but businessman.

The former Abia governor said before 1998, he built business entities, particularly in the media, oil, and gas sector, shipping, airlines, and others.

In a social media post, Sen. Kalu said he had enough resources to fund his former party the PDP, when he joined politics in 1998.

He said, "I built several entities (businesses particularly in the media, oil, and gas sector, shipping, airlines, and others), and in 1998,  I left more than a $4 Billion balance sheet in my companies before venturing into politics".

He wondered why people like him are expected to be penniless while those who have done next to nothing parade themselves as achievers.

He noted further, "In 1998, I used my resources to fund the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), my former party, and certain personalities. I built several entities (businesses particularly in the media, oil, and gas sector, shipping, airlines, and others).

"Today, those who have done next to nothing in the private sector are the ones parading themselves as achievers and saints. Whereas the real face of the organized private sector and other accomplished personalities like myself who have worked tirelessly and multiplied investments are expected to be penniless.

"Even though I have had my ups and downs, the fact is that I didn't start life as a politician. I am a businessman, a  capitalist with a human face."

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting of the party in Abuja on Monday, he noted that the state chapter of the party has work to do, urging stakeholders to do away with the impression that APC is the national ruling party and therefore all other things are in place.

He dismissed the insinuation that the state chapter of APC is not united. According to him, it is more united, stronger, and ready for future elections, appealing to those on the fence to join and build the party's strength.

"At the national level, we are the ruling party, but at the state level, we are almost like orphans. If you go with that impression 'our party is in charge'.

"Yes, we are in charge at the federal level and if it does not trickle home, we will go with the wrong impression that we are in charge, but when it is broken down, we find out that we are not holding the structure firmly. You have a work to do.

"Those still on the fence are encouraged to join this great family as we navigate through for successful future outings", he stated.

He noted that resources being mapped out for building the party are building blocks to its greatness and not just a jamboree.

The Deputy Speaker noted that there are roles to be played in making political parties great, appealing to stakeholders in Abia to stop looking at political party as a place to grab fortunes and go without playing the needed roles.

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu: Hon. Obi Aguocha Condemns "Elimination" Comment By Buhari by Metrix147: 5:41pm On Jan 22
Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Obi Aguocha has frowned at a recent comment credited to former President Muhammadu Buhari in which he said his administration would have eliminated Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of it wanted to.

He said the comment is reckless and reeks of all things personal vendetta, accusing the former President of making comments that promote lawlessness.

In a statement on Monday, Aguocha said the comment is alarming and raises serious questions about the commitment to the rule of law and human rights.

He challenged the former President to come out and make a confession on what he used his office to do to Nnamdi Kanu along with his former media aide, Femi Adesina.

Adesina had in a memoir launched recently quoted Buhari of saying that the repatriation of Nnamdi Kanu in 2022 from Kenya was a favour to him, as the government would have eliminated him if it wanted to.

This has however attracted condemnation from Aguocha and other Nigerians. The lawmaker noted that the ruling of the Supreme Court which condemned the invasion of Nnamdi Kanu’s home and his extra-ordinary rendition from Kenya speaks to how the administration of Buhari violated the IPOB leader's rights, wondering why he would me making comments with regards to "eliminating" him.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria, in its recent judgment, roundedly condemned Buhari's government, the attack on the home of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and also his rendition from Kenya. For the former president to summarily suggest that being subjected to such illegality was a favour for a citizen is totally reckless and reeks of all things personal vendetta, and so far from the high standards of civility expected from a leader.

He said, "President Buhari should rather come clean by confessing all he used his office to do to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the South East. Nobody, including Femi Adesina and his principal, should play God in respect of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

"There is obviously an inordinate obsession in the former president seeing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in detention because of his personal prejudice. The Buhari government failed and or refused to obey all the orders in favour of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu granted by courts of competent jurisdiction, so that any remark suggesting that Buhari rather than eliminate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu preferred that the courts determine the matter is an attempt to launder the image of an oppressor into a benevolent president.

"The president only used the judicial system to victimise Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the South East. Otherwise, why couldn't the government establish a crime by leading credible evidence in court against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu for all the years. By the way, wasn't it the failed attempt at eliminating Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in his village that forced the gentleman to escape from Nigeria.

"Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a victim of President Buhari's ill will and hatred against the 'Dot' people."

He therefore urged President Bola Tinubu not to be held hostage by the prejudice former President Buhari had against the people of South East and Nnamdi Kanu but to foster inclusion for the promotion of peace.

"I continue to urge and appeal to His Excellency President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR not to be held hostage by the personal bias and discomforts of the person of Buhari and toe the part of inclusion and dialogue as a panacea for peace, especially in the South East.
