The Head of the Fourth Administration of the Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ, has announced a new leadership direction for the separatist group, pledging to restore unity, discipline, accountability, and organizational stability.

According to him, the Fourth Administration of the Directorate of State was reconstituted under the authority of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whom he referred to as the movement's Supreme Leader.
Nwaọgụ stated that the appointments were made in accordance with the IPOB Code of Conduct, insisting that the power to appoint, suspend, or remove principal officers rests solely with Kanu. He accused some former officials of challenging the same authority under which they had previously accepted appointments while Kanu was in detention.
He further warned that any individual or group claiming to represent IPOB without authorization would be doing so at their own risk, adding that such actions could attract legal consequences in jurisdictions where IPOB operates.
Outlining the priorities of the new administration, Nwaọgụ disclosed plans to revive Radio Biafra, describing it as an important platform for communicating the movement's message.
He also pledged renewed attention to the welfare of individuals detained or imprisoned in connection with the group's activities, saying efforts were underway to identify those in detention and facilitate legal representation where necessary.
The IPOB official further promised improved welfare arrangements for members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), as well as greater transparency and accountability in the management of funds contributed by supporters of the movement.
Nwaọgụ also announced that the new leadership would begin issuing weekly updates on the legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu to provide what he described as accurate information to supporters.
Calling on IPOB members worldwide to remain peaceful, disciplined, and united, he urged them to put internal disagreements behind them and focus on rebuilding the movement.
The statement comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving Nnamdi Kanu at the Federal High Court in Abuja and follows recent reports of leadership changes within IPOB.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has disclosed that he was among those allegedly deceived by the activities of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), which has come under public scrutiny over questions surrounding its authenticity.
Kalu made the revelation on the floor of the House of Representatives during plenary on Wednesday, explaining that his office had initially received official-looking correspondence from the organization, prompting him to believe it was a legitimate government body.
According to the Deputy Speaker, his photographs were widely circulated alongside those of the self-acclaimed Director-General of the PFIPC, Adeniyi Adeyemi, following his interaction with the group.
“I was a victim, and I’m sure if you watch the news, you would see my picture all over the screen side by side with the purported DG of this organization,” Kalu told lawmakers.
He explained that in May 2025, his office received a letter bearing the Presidency's letterhead and identifying the sender as the Office of the Director-General of the PFIPC.
Kalu said the document appeared convincing at first glance, as it also contained an address indicating the Federal Secretariat Complex, Phase Three, Second Floor, Central Business District, Abuja.
He, however, noted that despite noticing some inconsistencies in the correspondence, he directed members of his team to verify the existence of the organization before granting any audience.
According to him, his aides visited the address provided and confirmed that the organization was operating from the stated location, leading him to approve a meeting with its representatives.
“When I saw this, I looked down the letterhead and saw Federal Secretariat Complex, Phase Three, Second Floor, Central Business District. It was a bit confusing for me. Some of the information looked credible, some did not.
“I now sent my team to go and verify the existence of this organization at the said address. My team came back confirming that this organization was in the said location. I then approved for them to come and have the interaction with me,” he said.

According to the Minister, Governor Otti's education reforms are designed to equip every child in Abia State with the knowledge, digital skills and critical thinking required to compete successfully both nationally and internationally.
"When you have a Governor who says, 'I'm going to build not just one, not two, not three, but twenty smart schools,' that is a Governor who truly cares about his people. He wants Abia children to lead Nigeria and the world," Dr. Alausa said.
He added that pupils in the school would have access to the same quality of learning resources available in developed countries, including Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled learning tools.
"Children here will receive the same educational materials available to children in America and London. They will learn AI, and in the years ahead, Abia will lead the world," the Minister stated.
Delivering his address titled "Tomorrow is the Reward," Governor Otti described the Ogbo Central Smart School as the first of three Smart Schools to be commissioned across the state's three senatorial districts this month.
He disclosed that an additional 17 Smart Schools, one in each Local Government Area, would be completed and commissioned before the end of the year, bringing the total to 20.
According to the Governor, each Smart School will feature interactive digital boards, while every school will accommodate 300 pupils, with each learner receiving a personal tablet to enhance classroom learning.
"Abia has clearly entered a new era of technology-driven and participatory learning. Every pupil in these schools will have access to digital tools that support modern education," Otti said.
He explained that his administration's broader vision is to build a generation of innovative leaders capable of transforming the state's economy through knowledge, creativity and entrepreneurship rather than merely acquiring certificates in search of jobs.
Governor Otti declared that education in all Smart Schools would be free and compulsory, warning teachers against extortion and cautioning against vandalism of public school infrastructure.
Responding to requests from the Ubakala community, the Governor directed the Commissioner for Works to install speed calming measures along the Ubakala Road and instructed the Commissioner for Environment to tackle erosion challenges affecting the area.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, described the commissioning as a bold declaration that Abia is preparing its children for the future through quality education.
He commended Governor Otti for consistently demonstrating that education remains the foundation for sustainable development and economic growth.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Lady Lydia Onuoha, described the Smart School Initiative as a strategic investment aimed at preparing Abia children for the demands of the 21st-century global economy.
She disclosed that the newly commissioned school features 13 digitally equipped classrooms, an Early Childhood Care Development Centre, a modern library, a 30-seat ICT centre, a sick bay, and a dedicated girls' room, making it one of the most advanced public primary schools in the country.
The Chief Executive Officer of Blue Giraffe Development Limited, Mrs. Orieji Okwara-Emele, commended Governor Otti for his commitment to transforming education, noting that the Smart School project would have a lasting impact on generations of Abia children.

A security and intelligence expert, Chief Ray Nkemdirim, has emphasised the critical role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in nation-building, intelligence gathering, and modern security operations, urging media professionals to embrace responsible journalism and leverage emerging technologies to promote national development.

The training, themed "Inspiring Nations, Organisations and People Through Media in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," brought together media practitioners and communication professionals from across Nigeria.
Delivering a lecture titled "The Place of AI in Nation Building and Intelligence Gathering," Nkemdirim warned against the growing trend of misinformation and sensational content circulating on social media, which he said often fuels fear, panic, and social instability.
According to him, terrorism thrives on creating fear among the populace, and irresponsible dissemination of unverified information by content creators and some media platforms often amplifies such fears.
"A lot of the reactions we are getting today are as a result of what is being dished out to the public. Things happen, content creators turn them into other things, send them out to the public and create undue panic. Terrorism is all about creating panic and fear, and unfortunately, the media is increasingly providing a platform that heightens such tensions," he said.
He cited recent incidents involving kidnapped students and teachers, noting that several disturbing videos circulated online later turned out to be false. Yet, they had already succeeded in generating widespread anxiety.
Nkemdirim urged journalists and media professionals to resist the temptation of spreading unverified information and instead uphold ethical standards that promote social stability and public trust.
Speaking on Artificial Intelligence, the intelligence expert described AI as a transformative technology capable of processing vast amounts of information within seconds, making it an indispensable tool in intelligence gathering, governance, economic development, and national security.
Drawing from his background in intelligence operations, he explained that traditional intelligence gathering involves stages such as direction, collection, processing, and dissemination, all of which can now be accelerated significantly through AI-powered systems.
"What AI can do for you is hasten all those processes. In a split second, you can access information, analyze data, and make informed decisions that would ordinarily take much longer," he stated.
Nkemdirim noted that leading global powers, including the United States, China, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, have embraced AI-driven systems to enhance governance, economic growth, and security operations.
He expressed concern over Africa's slow pace in adopting advanced AI technologies, particularly in security management, arguing that Nigeria's security challenges require more technological solutions rather than merely increasing personnel recruitment.
"For me, the real focus should be on enhancing our technological capability through satellite surveillance and drone acquisition. Why wait until people are kidnapped before responding, when technology can help detect threats before they occur?" he asked.
The security expert lamented Nigeria's reactive approach to security management, stressing that AI-powered surveillance systems could significantly improve proactive threat detection and prevention.
Using Turkey's border security model as an example, he revealed that discussions held years ago on deploying advanced technological solutions for border management were largely abandoned due to cost implications, despite their long-term benefits.
On nation building, Nkemdirim described good governance, economic prosperity, social cohesion, and national unity as essential pillars of a thriving society. He commended the developmental strides being witnessed in Abia State, describing them as examples of good governance that contribute to nation building.
He further explained that intelligence goes beyond mere information gathering, emphasizing the importance of verification, evaluation, and analysis before concluding.
"Information is not intelligence. Intelligence comes from properly evaluating information, analyzing it, and putting different pieces together to establish facts. Without that process, it remains mere information or even rumour," he said.
The guest speaker also highlighted various forms of intelligence collection, including Human Intelligence (HUMINT), Technical Intelligence (TECHINT), Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT), Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), and Cyber Intelligence, stressing the need for Nigeria to strengthen its capabilities in these areas.
While praising the benefits of AI, Nkemdirim cautioned against over-reliance on technology without adequate human oversight. He warned that unethical use of AI could lead to privacy violations, misuse of sensitive information, and accountability challenges.
"There must be proper human oversight. We should not rely on machines one hundred percent. Ethical considerations must guide the use of AI to prevent abuse and protect public trust," he said.
He concluded that the future of effective nation building and intelligence gathering would belong not merely to nations with the most advanced AI systems, but to those capable of combining technological innovation with strong ethical standards and public confidence.
"The nations that will succeed are not necessarily those with the best AI, but those that combine strong ethics and public trust in the usage of AI," Nkemdirim stated.
A Toyota Corolla belonging to a Chief Magistrate in Abia State has reportedly been stolen from outside the court premises in Umuahia, prompting an appeal to the public for assistance in recovering the vehicle, ABN TV reports.
The owner of the vehicle, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Ngozi Pearl Lekwa of Court 2, Umuahia, narrated that she parked the black Toyota Corolla outside the court premises along Finbarrs Road at about 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday before proceeding to her office for official duties.
According to Mrs. Lekwa, she had intended to briefly leave the office later in the day to attend to some personal errands. However, upon stepping out of the court premises shortly after noon, she discovered that the vehicle was no longer where she had parked it.
Speaking on the incident, the Chief Magistrate revealed that a friend later informed her that she had seen the vehicle being driven at high speed after exiting the vicinity of Market Square. The witness reportedly noticed a man behind the wheel but did not see Mrs. Lekwa in the vehicle.
The friend initially assumed the driver had been sent on an errand by the owner and therefore did not raise an alarm, although she found the speed at which the vehicle was being driven unusual. The vehicle was reportedly heading towards the Bende Road axis.
Mrs. Lekwa stated that she had not authorized anyone to use the vehicle and still had the car key in her possession at the time she discovered the theft.
In a twist of irony, the magistrate disclosed that she had only a day earlier ordered steering locks for two vehicles as an additional security measure. However, only one steering lock was delivered, while the second one intended for her vehicle had yet to arrive before the incident occurred.
The stolen vehicle is a black Toyota Corolla, 2008 model, commonly referred to as a "bank car."

Confirming the incident to ABN TV, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia State Police Command, said the case has been reported to the police and that investigations are currently ongoing to recover the vehicle and apprehend those responsible for the theft.
The police spokesperson assured members of the public that the Command is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves and urged anyone with useful information that could aid the investigation to come forward.
Meanwhile, the public is advised to remain vigilant and report any sighting of the vehicle or any information that may assist security agencies in tracking down the suspects.
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the nearest police station or reach out to the vehicle owner immediately.

The House of Representatives has issued a strong warning to Nigeria's security chiefs, demanding decisive action to end the growing wave of banditry, school kidnappings, and attacks on places of worship across the country, ABN TV reports.
The position of the House followed a motion moved by Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Judiciary.
Presenting the motion on the floor of the House, Hon. Osonwa condemned the increasing attacks on schools and religious centres, describing the trend as a grave threat to national security, education, and the fundamental rights of citizens.
He expressed concern that schools, once regarded as safe havens for learning, have become frequent targets of criminal gangs, leading to the abduction of students and creating widespread fear among parents and communities.
According to the lawmaker, the persistent kidnappings have contributed significantly to Nigeria's growing number of out-of-school children, as many families are now reluctant to send their children to school due to security concerns.
Hon. Osonwa further noted that attacks on worship centres have undermined citizens' constitutional right to freedom of religion and created an atmosphere of fear in many communities.
Lawmakers observed that insecurity has continued to devastate rural communities, forcing farmers to abandon their farmlands, crippling local businesses, and pushing many families into financial hardship due to the payment of huge ransoms to kidnappers.
The House also expressed concern that despite substantial budgetary allocations to defence and security over the years, many parts of the country continue to experience frequent attacks, kidnappings, and killings.
Following deliberations, the House resolved to urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately implement a comprehensive and aggressive security strategy aimed at dismantling bandit networks, securing vulnerable communities, and ensuring the rescue of all kidnapped victims.
The lawmakers further stated that if security chiefs fail to restore order and effectively address the security challenges within a reasonable timeframe, they should take responsibility and resign from their positions.
To ensure compliance with the resolution, the House mandated its Committees on Defence, Army, and National Security to monitor implementation and report back within two weeks for further legislative action.
The Member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, has called on the Federal Government to urgently provide adequate funding to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to strengthen the country's preparedness against Ebola and other epidemic-prone diseases.
Hon. Ogah made the call through a Motion of Urgent National Importance presented on the floor of the House of Representatives, warning that Nigeria faces an increased risk of Ebola importation following a recent outbreak of the disease in the Ituri Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The lawmaker explained that the outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a variant for which there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment. He noted that Nigeria's porous borders and limited cross-border surveillance systems make the country particularly vulnerable to the spread of infectious diseases.
According to Hon. Ogah, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control had already classified Nigeria as being at high risk of Ebola importation and activated emergency preparedness measures nationwide on May 25, 2026. However, he expressed concern that the agency's ability to effectively respond to any outbreak has been severely weakened by inadequate funding.
The federal lawmaker disclosed that the NCDC reportedly received no operational funding in 2025, while capital releases for projects captured in its 2026 budget are yet to be made available. He warned that the situation has placed enormous pressure on the agency's operations at a time when donor support is also declining.
Hon. Ogah highlighted several challenges currently facing the NCDC, including unpaid contractors and service providers, stalled laboratory and treatment centre projects, shortages of laboratory reagents and diagnostic materials, inadequate biosafety facilities, limited intensive care and oxygen support systems, as well as insufficient resources for the training and deployment of rapid response teams across the country.
He cautioned that failure to address these funding gaps could significantly weaken Nigeria's disease surveillance system, outbreak response capacity, laboratory services, logistics coordination, and emergency preparedness efforts.
The motion urged the House to call on the Executive Arm of Government to immediately release adequate funds to the NCDC in line with approved budgetary allocations. It also sought to mandate the House Committee on Infectious Diseases to monitor the utilization of such funds and ensure accountability.
In addition, the motion called on Port Health Authorities and other relevant agencies to intensify surveillance activities at the nation's borders and points of entry to prevent the importation of Ebola and other infectious diseases into the country.
Hon. Ogah stressed that protecting Nigerians from deadly epidemics requires proactive investment in public health infrastructure and emergency response systems.
"Nigeria cannot afford to be caught unprepared in the face of a potential Ebola outbreak. Timely funding of the NCDC is critical to safeguarding lives, strengthening public health security, and ensuring the country is adequately prepared to respond to any emerging health threat," he stated.
The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised Governor Alex Otti's decision to name the newly commissioned Umuahia Central Bus Terminal after Professor Nnenna Oti, describing the action as controversial, provocative, and capable of undermining public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the APC alleged that the governor’s action amounted to what it described as an endorsement of compromise and conflict of interest, considering Professor Nnenna Oti’s role as the Returning Officer during the 2023 Abia State governorship election.
The opposition party argued that Professor Otti merely carried out an official constitutional assignment on behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for which she was duly appointed and remunerated, questioning why she should receive what it termed “special recognition” from the beneficiary of the election outcome.
According to the APC, the development raises several ethical and moral concerns regarding the neutrality expected of electoral officials, insisting that no other governor in the country had named public infrastructure after electoral officers who supervised elections in their states.
The party further claimed that the “over-amplification” of Professor Nnenna Oti’s role in the 2023 governorship election had fueled public suspicion over alleged close ties between her and Governor Alex Otti, alleging that such recognition could create a dangerous precedent capable of affecting public trust in future elections.
The APC also warned that rewarding electoral officials with public honours after elections could send the wrong message ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding that such actions may be interpreted as inducement or gratification in civilized democracies.
The statement called on Professor Nnenna Otti to reject the honour if she considered herself a principled public servant, warning that failure to do so would further reinforce suspicions surrounding the credibility of the 2023 governorship election in Abia State.
The party also threatened to petition the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the relationship between Governor Alex Otti and Professor Nnenna Oti, including her conduct during the 2023 governorship election collation process.
The APC further referenced allegations of financial mismanagement and abuse of office reportedly linked to Professor Nnenna Otti’s administration at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), arguing that such allegations weaken attempts to portray her as a symbol of integrity.
According to the opposition party, Abia State has several distinguished patriots, technocrats and statesmen whose contributions to the state's development are more deserving of such honour. The APC listed personalities, including Sir J.O.J. Okezie, Chief Sam Okwulehie, Sam Mbakwe, Dr. Anagha Ezikpe, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Elder Emma Adaelu, among others.
The party maintained that immortalizing an electoral officer instead of individuals with longstanding developmental contributions to the state was “an insult to Abians and a mockery of democratic values.”
The APC therefore called on Governor Alex Otti to immediately reconsider and reverse the naming of the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal after Professor Nnenna Oti.
The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has announced that its governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly primaries will hold simultaneously across the 184 wards of the state on Saturday, May 30, 2026, ABN TV reports.
The party made this known in a press statement issued by its State Publicity Secretary, Iroegbu Emenike, reminding party members, stakeholders, aspirants, and the general public to prepare adequately for the exercise.
According to the statement, the decision follows an official directive from the national leadership of the Labour Party, which had earlier communicated the harmonization and adjustment of primary election dates nationwide to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party urged members across the 17 local government areas and 184 wards of Abia State to come out in large numbers and actively participate in the democratic process as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Labour Party further assured aspirants and party faithful that the primaries would be conducted in a transparent, peaceful, credible, and inclusive manner in line with the Electoral Act, the party’s constitution, and other established democratic guidelines.
The statement added that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to ensure a smooth, orderly, and hitch-free exercise across all wards in the state.

According to the Governor, Abia State’s debt profile, which stood at about ₦191 billion in 2023, has been reduced to less than ₦50 billion by the end of 2025 through prudent financial management and disciplined governance.
Dr. Otti also noted that the state has continued to receive positive independent assessments in areas of fiscal sustainability, transparency, and accountability.
He cited the BudgIT State of States Report, which moved Abia State from the 17th position in 2023 to the 4th position in 2025 among states in Nigeria, describing the ranking as evidence of responsible governance and financial reforms under his administration.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 presidential primary election in Abia State after securing an overwhelming majority of votes across the state’s 17 local government areas, ABN TV reports.

According to the results declared, President Tinubu polled a total of 161,005 votes to defeat fellow aspirant, Stanley Osifo, who secured 1,007 votes in the exercise.
The primary election, which was conducted across the 17 local government areas of the state, witnessed massive participation by APC members and stakeholders.
Details of the official breakdown showed that Tinubu recorded dominant victories in all local government areas, posting some of his highest figures in Bende Local Government Area with 39,826 votes, Umuahia North with 14,943 votes, Isiala Ngwa North with 11,298 votes and Ikwuano with 8,902 votes.
Stanley Osifo’s strongest performance came from Isiala Ngwa North, where he garnered 181 votes. He also recorded 158 votes in Isiala Ngwa South and 116 votes in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Announcing the outcome of the exercise, Kalu disclosed that Abia State had a total of 162,109 registered APC members eligible to participate in the presidential primary election.
He further stated that 162,084 party members were accredited for the exercise, while a total of 162,012 votes were cast during the election.
Kalu subsequently declared President Tinubu winner of the APC presidential primary in Abia State, having scored the highest number of valid votes cast in the exercise.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the party and scored the highest number of lawful votes cast, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is hereby declared winner of the APC presidential primary election in Abia State,” Kalu announced.
The declaration was greeted with jubilation by party supporters and stakeholders who gathered at the collation centre, as the exercise concluded peacefully without major incidents.
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has disclosed that his administration has completed the construction of 414 roads spanning about 864.12 kilometers across the state within the last three years.
Governor Otti disclosed during the May edition of the monthly media interaction programme, “Governor Alex Otti Speaks To Abians,” highlighting the achievements of his administration in road infrastructure and urban renewal.
According to the Governor, several of the completed roads would be commissioned beginning next week, noting that the projects were strategically executed to improve transportation, commerce, and economic activities across the state.
He further revealed that his administration currently has 82 additional roads under construction at different stages of completion, measuring about 212 kilometers.
Governor Otti stated that his government remains committed to delivering quality infrastructure with complementary facilities such as street lights and drainage systems to ensure durability and safety.

Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has dismissed reports of political disagreements between him and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.
Speaking at the APC Stakeholders Meeting in Umuahia, Kalu said both leaders understand their relationship and political journey better than outsiders.
“I don’t want anybody to be a judge between the Deputy Speaker and me. We know how we started, and only both of us know how we will end,” he declared.
The senator lamented attempts by some political actors to create unnecessary tension between them through gossip and misinformation.
According to him, he does not entertain backbiting or secret criticism against political associates and prefers open discussions whenever issues arise.
“Even when people come to gossip to me about somebody, I tell them to stop. If you say somebody spoke against me, let us call the person and discuss it openly,” he said.

A prominent aspirant in the Abia State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship race, Sir Mascot Uzor Kalu, has formally announced his withdrawal from the contest for the party’s gubernatorial ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, ABN TV reports.
In a letter dated May 20, 2026, and addressed to the National Chairman of the APC through the Abia State Chairman of the party, Mascot Kalu said his decision followed extensive consultations with family members, friends, and critical stakeholders across the state.
The former gubernatorial aspirant explained that although the decision was difficult, it became necessary in the interest of fairness, equity, and the unity of the party in Abia State.
According to him, one of the major reasons for stepping down was the emergence of his brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as the APC senatorial candidate, noting that his withdrawal would provide other aspirants the opportunity to contest for the governorship position.

Incumbent Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election, securing the party’s ticket for the 2027 general elections with a landslide victory over his lone challenger, Philip Nto.
The direct primary election, conducted across the five local government areas and 57 wards of Abia North Senatorial District on Monday, witnessed massive participation by party members and stakeholders.
At the end of the exercise, Senator Kalu polled 65,651 votes to defeat Philip Nto, who secured 2,103 votes, giving the former Senate Chief Whip a commanding victory margin of 63,548 votes.
The official results announced at the APC collation centre in Umuahia showed that a total of 72,028 registered voters participated in the exercise, while 69,441 voters were accredited. Total votes cast stood at 67,854.

According to Cishak, the primary elections were conducted across the various federal constituencies in the state, with party members participating in the selection of candidates to fly the APC flag in the forthcoming general elections.
In Bende Federal Constituency, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu emerged unopposed as the party’s candidate.
Similarly, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment and former member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, was returned unopposed as the APC candidate for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency.

Traditional rulers from Umuahia North, Umuahia South, and Ikwuano Local Government Areas have intensified calls for peace and strict adherence to an existing zoning arrangement, urging stakeholders to allow Ohuhu complete its agreed two tenures in the House of Representatives.
The monarchs made the call during a cross-community meeting held at the Palace of His Royal Majesty, Eze Iheanyichukwu Abel Ezeigbo, Ochima I of Uhabiri Umuchime Na Amanso Autonomous Community, Ossah-Ibeku, on Friday, May 1, 2026.
Addressing the gathering, the traditional rulers warned that rising political activities and agitations by aspirants from other areas could trigger avoidable tension if not carefully managed.
Speaking on behalf of the Ohuhu Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, Eze Iheanyichukwu Nwokenna, Idinoba of Ekeoba Kingdom, said the intervention was necessary to preserve peace and uphold a long-standing agreement guiding the rotation of the federal constituency seat.
According to him, the zoning formula established decades ago ensures that each bloc occupies the House of Representatives position for two tenures before it rotates.
“We are not here for politics or to promote any individual. Our message is clear allow Ohuhu to complete its two tenures as agreed. That is the only way to maintain peace, fairness, and mutual respect,” he said.
Also speaking, His Royal Eminence, Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu of Umudiawa Kingdom, reiterated that the appeal was based on an agreement that has existed for over 30 years and must be respected.
“We are reminding our brothers of what we all agreed upon. This is about equity and justice. Let Ohuhu complete its tenure, and when it moves to other areas, the same principle should apply,” he stated.
Responding to the appeal, traditional rulers from Ikwuano and Umuahia South expressed support for the message and pledged to take it to their people.
His Royal Highness, Eze Ben Oriaku, Dike I of Umudike Ukwu Oboro in Ikwuano, acknowledged receipt of the message, noting that there has always been an understanding of how the House of Representatives seat is zoned among the three LGAs.
He stressed the importance of peace, urging restraint among political actors.
“The best way to make peace is to stop any advance of conflict. We will reach out to our sons in Ikwuano to remind them of the zoning formula and the need to avoid actions that could lead to friction. I will also take this message to the Chairman of Ndi Eze Oboro and Ikwuano. Our advice is simple—avoid war,” he said.
From Umuahia South, His Royal Highness, Eze Paul C. Egwu, Dike Ukwu Autonomous Community, described the appeal as timely and necessary for unity.
“It is a good thing. Recognising those who have gone before to complete their second tenure will promote peace and remove disputes and misunderstandings. We accept this message and will pass it to other traditional rulers in Umuahia South,” he stated.

“They have come to plead with us to do everything possible to maintain peace and order. We from Ibeku are expected to support them to complete their tenure, and when it is our turn, they will also support us,” he said.
Eze Ezeigbo added that the matter would be escalated to the wider Ibeku Traditional Rulers Council for further deliberation, stressing that traditional institutions must always act as custodians of peace.
“If what they have told us about the agreement is true, then the right thing to do is to allow peace to reign and align with that agreement. Instead of allowing conflict, they have chosen dialogue, and that is commendable. All we want is peace so that we continue to live as one people,” he added.
