Politics / Road Project: No Part Of Abia Will Be Left Behind, Gov. Otti Vows by Metrix147: 2:45am On Mar 22
Less than two months after flagging off the reconstruction of the Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Abiriba-Ohafia road, a major corridor linking the state capital with communities in the northern part of the state, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti on Wednesday signaled the commencement of construction of another strategic route linking three communities in Abia North.

The 30km Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road is Governor Otti's solution to the long-held conundrum that there is no easy route to accessing Arochukwu from within Abia. For several years now, travellers to Arochukwu meander through communities within Akwa Ibom State before coming back to Abia, just to commute on a fairly good terrain, a release by chief press secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said.

According to the statement, the Federal road that connects Akwa Ibom to Abia through Arochukwu to Ohafia, Bende and Umuahia, which would have solved the problem, has been awarded severally but never executed, while the road remains erosion-ridden and impassable. So also is the 67km stretch that connects Umuahia to Uzuakoli, Abiriba and Ohafia, now being reconstructed by Governor Otti's administration.

Flagging off the construction of the Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road, Governor Otti promised that no part of Abia will be left behind in road infrastructural development as government is determined to open up every part of the state to boost the economy of the state.

"Starting with some of the most strategic roads in Aba and Umuahia, we are now expanding the scope to cover roads that connect our agricultural zones to the urban areas in order to boost the State’s agricultural output and expand our economic corridors to create jobs for thousands of our young people while taming rural-urban migration.

"It is on this note, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, that I happily welcome you to the official flag-off of the reconstruction of the 30-kilometre Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road. Coming just weeks after work began on the 67-kilometre Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Ohafia Road, the clear message is that no part of the State shall be left behind in our push to expand the frontiers of economic and social opportunities for individuals, families and businesses," Governor Otti affirmed.

To achieve the quality of work expected, the Governor said the state government had continued to engage reputable engineering construction companies, who share its vision in road infrastructure delivery, adding that government was mindful of getting value for taxpayers money deployed in executing the projects.

"From Port Harcourt Road in Aba through Ossah Road in Umuahia and across the over 30-road projects that are simultaneously going on in different parts of the State, we have painstakingly chosen civil engineering firms with excellent track records in project execution. Our most important consideration is to extract commensurate value for every kobo of taxpayers’ money spent.

"The Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road will on completion in about 12 months, revive the agricultural and allied business ecosystem within several communities in Arochukwu and Ohafia LGAs and open an expanded economic window for those seeking to tap into the promises of the New Abia by investing here.

"Fixing this road simultaneously with the Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Ohafia Road is a strategic initiative to guarantee that the stretch of road from this axis to Umuahia and Aba is in optimal shape, making the movement of people, agro and allied commodities from the northern part of the State to the urban centres hassle-free.

"Beyond just boosting the economic endeavours of individuals and businesses, the reconstruction of these roads will also improve the social dynamics in the communities, making travel less risky and adding an extra layer of incentives for our kith and kin living in places far and near to visit home more frequently for social functions and engagements.

"In committing so much to these road projects, we are looking to also strengthen inter-community bonds and create a new pathway for rapid development of the tourism sector. By the time the contractors complete their works, it would be easier for our friends and acquaintances to travel from wherever they are in the world to our communities to witness our cultural and traditional events as frequently as they wish," Governor Otti elaborated.

According to him, the NEDC was set up by the Federal Government to rehabilitate, resettle and reconstruct communities that were destroyed by insurgency, and address challenges such as the Lake Chad problem, care for Internally Displaced Persons, reduce illiteracy and promote the transformation of the region.

Onuigbo pointed out that many buildings and business outlets in the North East, including those owned by Igbos, were destroyed during the peak days of insurgency in the region.

He expressed joy that insecurity has been drastically reduced in the North East through initiatives introduced by the Federal Government, with support from international organisations.

According to him, the people of the South East, just like indigenes of their host communities, are now enjoying a better-secured environment in parts of North East.

“Our people who are living and doing business in the North East, their houses and businesses were destroyed alongside those of the indigenes. Every destruction in the North East affect the South East.

“We will contribute to the development of the North East. We have our people working and living in the North East,”

Properties / Gov. Otti Relocates Milverton Avenue Motor Parks Aba by Metrix147: 5:06pm On Mar 15
The Abia State Government has announced a possible relocation of the motor parks along Milverton Avenue, Aba, to a more conducive area to allow for ease of movement.

This is in response to a recent upsurge in fire outbreaks in the markets and some other business facilities.

Governor Alex Otti declared the Milverton Avenue parks as a recipe for disaster, after inspecting the carcass of burnt vehicles, other items and parts of the building housing the bus terminal of Chisco Transport Company, which was gutted by fire Wednesday night, Kazie Uko, chief press secretary to the governor said in a statement.

Speaking Thursday during an on the spot assessment of the fire incident, Governor Otti said the crowded nature of the Chisco park and all the other parks dotting the about one kilometre street, was a recipe for disaster.

He stated that the government would look at other parks at Osisioma and Port Harcourt Road, with more space, with a view to relocating the parks at Milverton Avenue.

"And I think it's time we relocated the parks to a more spacious place. We can't have everybody clustering in a place. This is a recipe for disaster, and I know that there are parks around Osisioma, part of Port Harcourt Road. We are going to go and have a look at them and ensure that we relocate a lot of these vehicles to the parks, so that it could be easy for us to move if there is any incident," he said.

Governor Otti directed that henceforth, every business facility in the state should have fire extinguishers installed on their premises to contain fire outbreaks and disclosed that the enforcement of that policy would commence next week.

The Governor announced that his administration had purposed to procure additional fire trucks to complement what is available in Aba. He described the fire incident at Chisco office as unfortunate and commended the men of the state fire service for mobilising and working hard to stop the fire.

Governor Otti regretted that there have been several fire cases in Aba in the last few weeks, suggesting that there are things that are not being done right and pleaded with the people to be more careful in order to prevent future fire outbreaks.

"I am happy that the Fire Service mobilised and worked very hard to stop the fire. If you noticed, in the last few weeks, there have been several fire incidents in Aba. That tells me that there are things we've been doing that we are not doing well. In the first instance, every facility must have fire extinguishers and we are going to enforce it from next week.

"We will also try and get more fire trucks because I'm told that when the fire was going to overpower the service men, they had to seek back up from Umuahia and that's a distance," he said.

He commiserated with the transport company over its loss and pledged government's support to "at least, take some of their loses."

The Mayor of Aba South, Chief Uche Wogu, who, in company of the Mayor of Aba North, Chief John Udeagbala, joined Governor Otti on the visit, described the incident as most unfortunate and thanked God that no life was lost. He commended the Governor as well as men of the state fire service for rising to the occasion.

"We thank God that no life was lost. We thank God that Abia is working. We thank God that we have a Governor that is very sensitive to the plight of the people.

"The Fire Service is working. The day was saved by the Fire Service. It is unfortunate that in a small place like this, we have diesel dump which might have aggravated the fire incident.

"There was a spark from the generator. It exploded, diesel must have aided it. When I got here yesterday, people were scooping diesel from the drainage which is unacceptable. You can't have diesel dump here. I also suspect that other transport companies might have the same thing. It is not acceptable," Mayor Wogu declared.

Politics / Udensi Challenges Armed Forces To Relocate To Forest And Free Hostages by Metrix147: 1:55pm On Mar 15
Interpol Systems Consultant and security expert, Sir Chikwe Udensi has urged the armed forces to put up an adequate response to the escalating cases of kidnap especially in the northern region and ensure the rescue of all those held hostage.

Udensi said time has come for the service chiefs to step out of their heavily air-conditioned offices and relocate to the forest and flush out bandits causing tension in the country.

Speaking at a keynote address at a conference of Certified Security Experts of Nigeria in Abuja, Udensi said the constant meeting of President Bola Tinubu and the security chiefs in air-conditioned offices in Abuja have not been productive, insisting that they must roll up their sleeves and work for the peace and stability of the nation.

He said, "The kidnapping cases are too numerous. Look at the 13-year-old girl kidnapped from Sagwari estate in Dutse Abuja, look at the youth corps members going from Akwa Ibom to Sokoto, they have not been found, look at the family of eight kidnapped from their home in Gwarimpa, they have not been found.

"Look at the 287 students kidnapped from their school in Kaduna, they have not still be found, and they are sitting in the comfort of their air-conditioned offices doing nothing. They should relocate to the forests and flush out these criminals so that we can have peace in our country"
, he noted.

Udensi said about 95% of kidnap victims are kept in the forests, challenging the military to go after them and rescue all hostages, noting that the forests are not invincible.

Crime / Otti Visit Scene Of Fire Incident In Ehere Market, Vows To Forestall Incident by Metrix147: 10:34am On Mar 13
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has stressed the need for markets in the state to be properly designed and built to allow for ease of movement, especially in the event of fire outbreak or any other emergency.

Governor Otti spoke Tuesday morning, when he paid an on the spot visit to a section of the Ehere Market, along Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, occupied by timber dealers, which was gutted by fire Monday night, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said in a statement.

Gov. Otti regretted that the way the market was built made it open to fire incidents and directed the Mayor of Obingwa Local Government Area, Dr. Eric Egwuibe, to immediately begin the process of rebuilding the market.

"What we will do is to assess the level of damage. We will also through the Mayor begin the process of rebuilding this place.

"I think the way the market is makes it susceptible to fire incidents. You know, where you have wood, you have sawdust; these are very expensive woods, and so we need to ensure there are fire extinguishers in all the shops around here.

"We also want the shops to be properly built because the way it is, it is easy to conduct fire to other shops. Even the way the entire place looks, it is not very decent and very inviting. So I will like you to trade in a conducive environment," Governor Otti said.

He added: "So I'm instructing the Mayor to assess the level of damage and begin the process of rebuilding, bring down all those ramshackle buildings and build proper shops for all of you."

The Governor, who noted that on getting information about the disaster, he quickly alerted men of the Homeland Security and Fire Service to put out the fire, thanked God that no life was lost in the inferno, which consumed several shops.

He assured that fire extinguishers will be procured and placed strategically in the market to enable traders to tackle such outbreaks in the future.

Governor Otti said his vision is to ensure that traders operate in a conducive environment fit for trading and assured that the government will assess the level of damage to support them in replacing their lost goods.

"The details of how it would be done would be worked out. One thing I can assure you is that if you do have a shop here, you will not lose your shop. We also know that this damage would have cost a lot of loss to the owners, by the time we do the assessment, we will see how we can support them," he added.

Politics / EFCC Ill-Treatment Meted Out To Orji Kalu Unfair — Lamido by Metrix147: 2:17pm On Mar 10
A prominent Northern leader, Dr. Bashir Lamido has welcomed the Appeal Court ruling upholding the decision of the Federal High Court dismissing the retrial of a former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Lamido in a chat with newsmen in Yola described the continuous trial as unfair saying: “The ill treatment is unacceptable and unfair to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.”

Lamido described the lingering trial as unfair and an act of intimidation against Kalu— who is now the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

“Senator Kalu is someone that is well-loved and known globally as a billionaire businessman. It is surprising hearing that he is been tried for a mere N7 billion. We all know what transpired between him and Obasanjo and the failed third term agenda. We know those that destroyed the third term agenda and what happened after they denied Obasanjo his agenda. He went after them with the EFCC. Some people benefited from it using it as a tool to witch-hunt Kalu especially ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

“Kalu is a lovable soul across board. He lives across the six geopolitical zones. So, I feel it was a bit unfair especially the ill-treatment meted out against him. This case has lingered for too long and it’s time for those behind the ordeal to apologise to him and move on. For a man who stood against 19 witnesses of the Federal Government and was never implicated by any of the witnesses to still get jailed is only but a calculated attempt of political destruction.”

In September 2021, a judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Inyang Ekwo, barred the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from retrying Mr Kalu, who was earlier convicted of N7.1 billion fraud.

Mr Kalu, a serving senator representing Abia North, was already serving a 12-year jail term for the offences when the Supreme Court, on 8 May 2020, set aside the proceedings leading to his and his co-defendants’ conviction.

The Supreme Court’s judgement delivered on an appeal by Mr Kalu’s co-defendant, Ude Udeogu, had ordered a retrial at the Federal High Court.

Mr Kalu went on to secure his release from prison based on the Supreme Court’s verdict but quickly applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja to stop his retrial.

In his decision on the issue, Mr Ekwo held that the Supreme Court’s judgement did not order the retrial of Mr Kalu.

The judge cited section 36 (9) of the Nigerian constitution and Section 238 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (2015), in saying, “no person can be retried on the offense upon which he has been convicted.

However, the defiant EFCC through its lawyer, Oluwaleke Atolagbe, approached the appellate court to have Mr Ekwo’s decision nullified.

Mr Kalu was tried based on amended 39 counts in which they were accused of stealing and mismanaging funds belonging to Abia State during his days as governor between 1999 and 2007. The EFCC had 19 witnesses against Kalu of which none implicated him but the judge still went ahead to pronounce judgement against the former governor.

An Ukwa High Court in Abia State on Thursday sentenced two middle-aged men of the defunct Bakassi Group now the Abia State Vigilante Services., Mr Ugochukwu Amaugo and Mr Udo Ogba Oka both to death by hanging for Murder, ABN TV reports.

The judgment was read out and pronounced by Hon. Justice C.H. Ahuchaogu who found them guilty of an alleged case of murder that occurred on the 30th of August, 2013.

The convicts who were members of the defunct Bakassi group had stated that on the 30th of August, 2013 they had arrested two young men named, Temple Nwakanma and Martins Azih around Osisioma, Aba and claimed to have found them in possession of firearms, cartridges and knives.

They had moved them from there and headed to their Umuahia office when they met some men of the Nigerian Army at Abia tower who, after interrogation requested that the boys be handed over to them which they did.

They claimed not to know the names of the military men nor did they get a note from them as at the time of that handover.

Ever since, the whereabouts of the young men have been unknown as the members of the Nigerian Army situated in the area of the incident had denied receiving any of such men as claimed by members of the Abia State Vigilante Services.

Meanwhile, efforts made to ascertain the whereabouts of those young men have since proved abortive in the last 11 years.

The matter has however been in court since after the incident and concluded on Thursday, as Hon. Justice Chibuzo Ahuchaogu sentenced both men of the defunct Bakassi to death by hanging for failing to prove beyond every reasonable doubt that they had handed the boys to men of the Nigeria Army and as such knew nothing about their disappearance.

Politics / Aba Geometric Power Project Commissioned In A Hurry — Sir Udensi by Metrix147: 11:00am On Mar 07
A leader of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and former governorship aspirant in Abia, Sir Chikwe Udensi has accused the state government of commissioning the Aba Geometric Power Project in a hurry just to receive credit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qInYqIXbJgg

According to him, it was not time to commission the project which was recently launched by Vice President Kashim Shettima, saying it was a bad publicity stunt.

Featuring on "Open Parliament", a current affair programme monitored by ABN TV on Wednesday, Sir Udensi said he is in touch with Aba residents, saying the feedback indicates that there is no power let alone uninterrupted.

He cited the commissioning of Ajaokuta Steel Company in the past as well as the commissioning of Dangote Refinery as some of the hurriedly launched projects even when they are not ready for use, saying the Aba Geometric Power Project toed this same line.

He said the state government should have waited a while and put the project into full use before commissioning it.

A representative of Geometric Power Project had earlier called on Aba residents to be patient as efforts are being put in place to ensure that the project comes into full use.

Udensi commended the government of former governors, including Orji Uzor Kalu, T.A Orji and Dr Okezie Ikpeazu for their massive support in ensuring that the project is actualized.

Politics / Otti Denies Suing Tinubu Over Refusal To Build Seaport, Airport In Abia by Metrix147: 9:22am On Mar 02
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has denied suing President Bola Tinubu at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the President's refusal to grant his request to establish a seaport as well as an international airport in the state.

This is in response to a social media report, which the chief press secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko in a statement made available to ABN TV, said is false, urging the public to ignore it.

According to Uko, "The fake news claims that Governor Otti sued the Federal Republic of Nigeria and President Tinubu for allegedly refusing to grant the request of the Abia Governor to establish a seaport as well as an international airport in Abia.

"Another part of the badly stringed and concocted report alleges that Governor Otti had also placed a ban on businesses operated by Nigerians of northern extraction resident in Abia State, until the approval for the establishment of the said seaport and international airport is granted.

"There is absolutely no truth in this wickedly contrived fable. We are still on the drawing board on the proposed seaport while the Federal Government provided for an airstrip in Abia in the current budget, for which we are grateful.
