Crime / Police Officers Who Invaded ABN Tv/radio Studio For Orderly Room Trial by Metrix147: 3:04pm On Jan 18
Commissioner of Police Abia State Command, CP Kene Onwuemeile has directed the orderly room trial of four police officers who invaded ABN TV/radio studio in Umuahia on Tuesday and effected the arrest of a guest, Mr Udensi Bernard during a live programme.

Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Maureen Chinaka in a statement on Thursday said the officers have defaulted and their orderly room trial commences today 18/1/2023.

She said if found guilty they will be disciplined accordingly.

She reiterated the readiness of the command to "maintain a professionally competent, service-driven, rule-of-law compliant, and people-friendly Police Force, in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun".

The statement reads in part, "Preliminary investigations into the incident indicate that the police officers who made the arrest, conducted themselves unprofessionally.

"This is because, while there is no law prohibiting a police officer from arresting a studio, the facts surrounding the particular case being investigated by the police officers do not warrant such actions.

"The Commissioner of Police Abia State Command visited ABN TV/Radio on 17/1/24, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment. He had discussions with the Director of ABN TV/Radio, and apologized for the conduct of the officers. The matter was resolved amicably."

Crime / Abia CP Visits ABN TV/Radio Studio, Tenders Apologies As Bernard Is Released by Metrix147: 11:37am On Jan 18
The Commissioner of Police Abia State Command, CP Kene Onwuemeile on Wednesday visited the broadcast studio of ABN TV/Radio located along Azikiwe road in Umuahia, the state capital.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxmm-kakG6o

The visit came 24 hours after come police officers from the command invaded the studio of the online TV and radio during a live programme.

They claimed to have acted on a petition written against one Udensi Bernard who was a guest at the live broadcast, Youth Rendezvous.

He was forcefully taken away and in the process, some broadcast equipment were damaged.

Repeated pleas by the staff of the media organization to allow the programme to come to an end before the guest could be arrested fell on a deaf ear as the policemen went ahead to abduct him in a Gestapo style.

CP Onwuemeile who arrived in the company of top officials of the command expressed sadness over the development.

The visibly angered police boss tendered apologies to the media organization, its management, and staff for the disruption of their routine activities geared towards the development of society.

He said the action of the four police officers does not represent the true image of the command, even as he urged every police officer in the state to work towards enhancing cordial relationship with civil populace.

The Commissioner of Police also promised to fix the damaged studio equipment.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bernard has since been released along with his friend Michael Idika who was initially locked up with him.

Crime / Invasion Of Our Station By Police Provocative, Attack On Press Freedom — ABN TV by Metrix147: 5:16pm On Jan 17
The management of ABN TV has reacted to the invasion of its studio in Umuahia by officers of the Nigerian Police Force on Tuesday, describing it as provocative.
https://www.youtube.com/live/MGDJDZJWwr4?si=W85pV0tpUtv-Fw4T
In a statement on Wednesday signed by the Director of the station, he said the invasion and arrest of a guest during a live broadcast, is an attack on press freedom.

Some officers of Umuahia Area command of the Nigerian Police at about 2:40pm on Tuesday had stormed the studio located in Azikiwe Road Umuahia and whisked away a guest, Udensi Bernard during a live programme, Youth Rendezvous.

The police claimed a senior brother of the guest, Uche Onwuka Udensi had written a petition against him over a family matter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxmm-kakG6o?si=FnNH1ikAuXRbC6gx
Okali said repeated pleas by staff of the station to the officers to allow the programme come to an end before the guest could be arrested, they insisted on whisking him away while the live programme was on.

He said, "We find this very provocative and indeed an act of overzealousness by the officers who obviously acted in clear contravention of the rule of engagement.

"It clearly also negates the enhanced police-civil relations which the Commissioner of Police, CP Kene Onwuemeile has consistently campaigned for.

"When the Director of the media organization who was in Aba for an assignment was informed of the development, he quickly reached out to the Commissioner of Police who immediately invited staff of ABN TV/Radio to properly brief him on what happened, officers on duty barricaded the door and harassed, intimidated and threatened to detain them.

"We also want to put on record, during the Gestapo arrest, many of our broadcast equipment were fatally damaged, including a laptop, camera and microphones.

"We find this an attack on press freedom and most especially, an open violation of the human right to expression, having taken place during a live broadcast where critical issues about youth development were being discussed.

"We demand an open apology from the Abia State Command of the Nigerian Police over this unprovoked attack in our studio.

"It has equally left us with huge financial losses following the damage of our equipment. We are also calling for the replacement of the affected tools.

"From all indications, the officers were not properly schooled on best approaches to relate with the civil populace in a democratic environment where the media plays a key role in enhancing their relations with the generality of the society."

Politics / Catholic Priest Says Otti's Victory At Supreme Court Saved State From Crisis by Metrix147: 6:53am On Jan 16
A Catholic priest, Rev. Father (Dr.) Henry Maduka, says the Supreme Court verdict affirming the victory of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, saved Abia from falling into crisis, AbnTV reports.

Rev. Father Maduka, the Chancellor of Umuahia Catholic Diocese, said a crisis of unimaginable proportion would have descended upon the state if the judgment had gone otherwise, chief press secretary to Gov. Otti, Kazie Uko said in a statement.

This, according to the clergy, was because Abians had completely lost confidence in the previous administration in the state and the party that brought them into the office and had looked forward to a better future in Governor Otti and that was the reason the citizens voted massively for him in the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

Rev. Father Maduka spoke on Sunday while giving the vote of thanks at a Thanksgiving Service held at the Mater Dei Catholic Cathedral, Umuahia, as part of the activities to celebrate this year's Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

He advised the Governor to sustain the unprecedented achievements he had recorded within just seven months of assumption of office, saying Abia people are excited at the level of development in terms of road infrastructural upgrade and payment of workers' salaries as and when due.

Governor Otti, speaking during the service, thanked the clergy and parishioners for their continued support even after the elections and restated his earlier promise not to disappoint the people of the State in the discharge of his duties.

"You should continue to pray for us. Remember us in your prayers, day and night; and our commitment is that we will not disappoint you," he said.

The Governor thanked God for his victory at the Supreme Court, saying if God had not sanctioned it, it would not have happened. He narrated how he and his team had rushed to the church upon his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the duly elected Governor of Abia State on 22nd March 2023, and ascribed all glory to God.

"We may have fought hard, we may have been resilient, we may have worked very hard but if He (God) did not sanction it, it will not happen. And we have therefore come here to thank God, thank the men and women of God, thank the children of God that are here," he declared.

In his remarks, the Chairman, of Nigerian Legion, Abia Chapter, Commander Ambrose Nnabugwu (Rtd.) said posterity would be kind to Governor Otti for what he has done for the Nigerian Legion, and Abians generally, within seven months in office.

Nnabugwu cited massive reconstruction and maintenance of road networks within Aba and Umuahia and, especially, attention to the welfare of the Legionnaires, as part of Governor Otti's achievements. He expressed hope that the Governor would do more for the members of the Nigerian Legion as the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day is being celebrated.

In a homily, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Ukpong noted that it is God, who gives victory, saying that Governor Otti recognises that fact.

"This knowledge is important for the continuous success of the administration. Don't forget that the God who has given you victory will demand your stewardship. I must say, so far Abians are happy with your government. Now that every other obstacle have been removed, we have the right to get every dividend of democracy," he expressed.

Politics / Chikwe Udensi Congratulates Gov. Otti On Supreme Court Victory by Metrix147: 9:24pm On Jan 13
A security consultant with the Inter-Pol systems, Sir Chikwe Udensi has congratulated the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti on his victory at the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court in a lead judgment on Friday read by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji held that the appellants (PDP and APC) failed to prove substantial non-compliance in their appeal.

The apex court faulted the appellants for bringing the appeal to the court, tagging it as frivolous and vexatious.

Alex Otti had scored 175,466 votes to defeat Okey Ahiwe of the PDP, who polled 88,529 votes in the election early last year.

Reacting to the decision of the Supreme Court, Sir Udensi in an interaction with ABN TV on Saturday said the affirmation of Otti's election is affirmation of the will of the people of Abia State.

According to Sir Udensi, the governor has successfully weathered the storm of distraction caused by the myriads of litigation, which started from the tribunal, and eventually ended in the Supreme Court.

He expressed satisfaction with the steps taken so far by the Governor to redefine governance since May last year when he was sworn-in.

Sir Udensi expressed confidence that with the litigations laid to rest, Abians will have more to reap in terms of dividends of democracy in the state.

He therefore urged the people of the state to continually offer their support to the Governor, expressing hope that he would tackle the years of rot that has held the state by the jugular.

Politics / Drop Your Guns, Negotiate With FG - Ben Kalu Tells Unknown Gunmen In South East by Metrix147: 7:12pm On Jan 07
Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has advised gunmen operating in the South East to come out of the bushes, drop their guns, and negotiate for better jobs and a sound future from the Federal government.

This is even as he launched a Food-For-Peace Program, to tackle hunger in the South East.

Kalu, who addressed journalists in Bende during an All Progressives Congress, APC, stakeholders’ meeting and empowerment program for his constituents, said that President Bola Tinubu has been fair to the South East in appointments and other developmental programs.

He lamented that the economy of the South East region was destroyed by the effects of sit-at-home in parts of the zone, which according to him, made many investors of South East origin to flee the area.

The Deputy Speaker described the actions of unknown gunmen as an affront to the Federal Government, arguing that resorting to violence was at the detriment of the South East economy and general development.

Kalu however advised all the agitators in the South East who are still operating from the bush to drop their guns and embrace the Federal Government’s calls for peace, using the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) as a vehicle.

He noted that Tinubu has given key positions to the Igbos including the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Minister of Works, Chief of Naval Staff, and others, he deserves total support of the Igbo nation now and in his future political interests.

Kalu disclosed that he is interested in the release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention but said that the process for Kanu’s release can be hastened if enforcers of the sit-at-home and actors of other violent crimes in the South East dropped their guns and embrace peace.

“Sit-at-home at-home is the biggest folly. You can’t match or outrun the firepower of the Federal Government. The best approach is to reduce the level of violence in the South East.

“Tinubu did not contribute to the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu. Why will we punish him for what he did not do? Calm down, return the guns to the security agencies because PISE-P is designed to create jobs for you,” he advised the unknown gunmen.

Politics / Let's Support, Not Attack Tinubu’s Government, Benjamin Kalu Urges South East by Metrix147: 8:51am On Jan 03
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and member representing Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has appealed to the people of South East to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying the president is interested in the region's development.

Speaking virtually on the ‘South East Political Roundtable’, a current affairs radio programme on FLO FM in Umuahia on Tuesday monitored by AbnTV, the Deputy Speaker expressed concern on the continuous detention of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, saying his release is achievable.

He said the President needs to be convinced that the people of South East have realized that he (Tinubu) did not contribute anything to Nnamdi Kanu’s incarceration, urging that the government should be supported.

Kalu is also the initiator of the recently unveiled Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), a non-kinetic approach to achieving peace in the region.

“We are working underground. There’s a detailed strategy. It’s not by violence, you can’t coerce the government through violence. It has never worked and won’t work. Let’s be wiser. The wisdom is in peace. Let’s quench the violence.

“If it’s chaotic, it won’t work. Let’s cool down. Let the man see that you’ve recognised he didn’t contribute to locking him up and that he has not done anything to the southeast. We should support him and his government and not attack him.

I’m standing firmly against the voice of violence, preaching peace. That is what I’m here for, this voice of peace will echo through the Villa and he will come out. Mr President was happy with what happened in Bende. That the whole country can gather together and support this project", he said.

Politics / Ooni Of Ife Lauds Gov. Otti's Competence, Capacity As Abia Governor by Metrix147: 8:04am On Dec 31, 2023
The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), says Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, will leave a legacy in governance that will be difficult to match.

The highly revered Yoruba leader spoke when he visited Governor Otti in his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia on Friday, December 29, 2023.

The Ooni was in Abia, where he attended a civic reception in honour of the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt—Hon. Benjamin Kalu, organised by his Bende community.

The event also witnessed the unveiling of the Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), an idea of Hon. Kalu, as part of the activities marking the grand civic reception, thanksgiving, and homecoming of the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House, held on Friday at Bende Local Government Headquarters.

Oba Ogunwusi, while fielding questions from the media during the visit, attested to the competence, character, and capacity of Governor Otti to deliver on his current assignment in Abia, Nwahiwe Chinonyerem Cleverson a Government House press officer said in a statement made available to AbnTV.

He said, “For me, it’s a red-letter day because I know who he (Governor Otti) is. It is not a relationship of now. I know his competence; I know his capacity and what he has delivered in the private sector. So we should rally round him and celebrate him because what he will deliver for the people of Abia will be very difficult to match.

“I have asked him privately, Your Excellency, there is something beyond winning, please share your legacies with me. What do you want the Abia people to know you for? He is somebody I became close to when he left banking and when he wasn’t a Governor and we shared thoughts and ideas. But I’m very fulfilled because he came prepared for the job. I am much more than convinced that he will deliver the dividends of democracy for the Abia people and by extension the Igbos and Nigeria as a country.

“He has the capacity; he has the competence, a very broad brain with ideas and things he wants to implement. So for me, I am here to pick his brain. Your Excellency, beyond winning, beyond celebration, what do you have on the table for the people? For the past two hours, we have been engaging one another, and I am very convinced that he is the same Dr. Alex Otti of yesteryears. In fact, much more better, a finer wine to deliver dividends of Democracy for the Abia people.”

The Ooni urged for prayers for Governor Otti, for sound health and long life to deliver his plans for the State, saying the Governor has a great plan for the state and knows what he is doing.

"He came prepared, so we should continue to support him. Forget that I came from the Southwest, he has been a brother. I call him my own Governor. I told a lot of people from the East, and even the traditional rulers today, you can call him your own son, but he is my Governor. I want to watch him succeed and that’s why I’m here.

“I have been looking forward to this and today, I am fulfilled. Irrespective of politics, irrespective of party, he is out there to be successful and by the very special grace of God, he will be successful. He will deliver great things for Abians,” the foremost Yoruba king said emphatically.

Politics / Governor Otti Signs N567.2 Billion 2024 Abia Budget Into Law by Metrix147: 2:48pm On Dec 28, 2023
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has signed into law the 2024 Appropriation Bill of N567.2 billion, recently passed by the State House of Assembly, AbnTV reports.

Governor Otti, while signing the bill on Thursday, December 28, 2023, said the 2024 Budget would move Abia from its current level of underdevelopment to development, chief press secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said in a statement made available to AbnTV on Thursday.

"I want to say that this is a budget that would take Abia State out of underdevelopment to development. The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. This is the first step, once we get things right, and we know we will get them right, the next few years will be Uhuru for all our people, those living here and those who come from here and our friends," the Governor was quoted to have declared.

He noted that the budget ratio of 84% for capital expenditure and 16% for recurrent was not a mistake but a deliberate plan to accelerate the growth of Abia's economy within a short space of time.

"That we devoted 84% of the budget to capital expenditure is not an error. If you went through the details of the budget, you will find out that every kobo we intend to borrow will go into infrastructure or be mapped out to infrastructure. Our discussions are on and we believe that as we require the funding, we will get them," he affirmed.

The Governor maintained that every money borrowed to finance the budget would be channeled to capital expenditure, adding that the budget is expected to excite foreign and local investment, spur large-scale and medium businesses, secure the State, and prepare Abia for the next level of development.

Governor Otti commended the Speaker and members of the State House of Assembly for a great job done, which led to the expeditious passage of the bill.

Earlier, the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, who affirmed that 84% of the budget is for capital expenditure while 16% is for recurrent expenditure, said that the budget would touch the lives of Abia people positively.

According to him the aim of passing the budget before the 31st of December 2023 is to ensure that the 2024 Budget becomes operational from the 1st of January 2024.

Crime / New Female Tenants Kidnaps 4 Children From Different Parents In Umuahia by Metrix147: 8:39am On Dec 18, 2023
Barely two weeks after four children of the same parents were taken to an unknown destination by a tricycle driver, in Umuahia, while on their way to school, a female tenant who newly moved into an apartment has allegedly abducted four children belonging to three different parents.

The kids named Chioma, 6, Ogbonne, 6, Miracle, 5, and Joy, 3, were abducted by two unidentified tenants who moved into a compound at Uwalaka Street by Ossah Road in Umuahia, capital of Abia State.

AbnTV learnt that the alleged abductors in the latest case disguised as genuine tenants who rented and paid for a room in the building where the families lived.

After moving in, they immediately became friendly with the families, giving food and gifts to the children, and also playing around with them while perfecting their evil plans.

One of the grieving mothers, Mrs Ngozi Kingsley, stormed Flo 94.9 FM station in Umuahia to call for help, telling the public about her only daughter, Chioma, who was taken away.

Narrating her ordeal, while crying, she said: “I went to the market as usual and left my children with my sister, who visited with her two children. We had no water in the compound due to a lack of power supply, so my sister went to fetch water and took my son with her.

“When she returned, she discovered that my daughter Chioma, her two daughters, Ogbonne, and Joy, as well as my neighbour’s child, Miracle, were missing and the new tenants were nowhere to be found.”

Mrs Ifeanyi Uduma Ibe from Okon Ohafia in Ohafia LGA whose two children were kidnapped by the new tenants, said the alleged abductors were cooking and serving her children food and giving them other gifts from the day they packed into the compound.

According to her, the suspects became overly friendly with children in the compound, while parents were unaware of the plan to steal their children.

Mrs Ibe, who said her daughter, Joy, can be identified by a birthmark on her knee, said that the case has been reported to the Police.

Politics / Okpara Square To Umuahia Tower To Be Ready Before Christmas — Otti by Metrix147: 1:42am On Dec 02, 2023
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, says one side of the six-lane Ossa Road, Okpara Square to Tower, currently under construction will be ready for use by Christmas, AbnTV reports.

Governor Otti stated this on Thursday while inspecting the ongoing construction works on the 3.5km carriage, a major gateway into Umuahia, capital of Abia State.

"I have been assured that at least one side would be ready for commuters to use during this Christmas," the Governor was quoted in a statement by his chief press secretary, Kazie Uko as saying.

He assured that with the dry season setting in, work will progress steadily on daily basis to ensure that the work is delivered within the time frame.

Governor Otti explained that he was motivated to begin the expansion of the road to six lanes from the initial four lanes due to the congestions usually experienced on the road, especially during festive seasons.

"If you are familiar with this road, every festive season people get stuck. Expanding the road to six lanes would help traffic. We know what our people wanted. The essence of government is to deliver on what the people want and people are happy because we are actually speaking to their needs and that's what government is about.

"On a daily basis we have more and more people, who want to move out of Umuahia and Aba to bring their businesses back, so we are forward thinking and forward looking. We are already planning for them as they relocate," he said, adding that many good things and development plans are in the offing for Abians.

The Governor, despite all the democratic dividends he had delivered in a short space of six months, said it was still early days. According to him, government will be touching on different aspects of the people's needs.

"That's why we are here, to ensure that the welfare and security of our people are prioritised," he said.

Governor Otti sympathised with all those who have to suffer inconveniences, as a result of the ongoing construction, in the cause of using that road, saying, "To those who have been inconvenienced by the restrictions of traffic on this road, we want to apologise to them and assure them it wouldn't be too long before they begin to enjoy free flow of traffic."

On the issue of compensation, the Governor said a lot of people's houses were affected and that government had already paid compensations to them.

"I understand there are a few more houses that got enumerated after the first compensations have been paid, we are looking at that to ensure that we also pay compensations before we bring down those houses," promised.
