Crime / Police Officers Who Invaded ABN Tv/radio Studio For Orderly Room Trial by Metrix147: 3:04pm On Jan 18 |
Commissioner of Police Abia State Command, CP Kene Onwuemeile has directed the orderly room trial of four police officers who invaded ABN TV/radio studio in Umuahia on Tuesday and effected the arrest of a guest, Mr Udensi Bernard during a live programme. Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Maureen Chinaka in a statement on Thursday said the officers have defaulted and their orderly room trial commences today 18/1/2023. She said if found guilty they will be disciplined accordingly. She reiterated the readiness of the command to "maintain a professionally competent, service-driven, rule-of-law compliant, and people-friendly Police Force, in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun". The statement reads in part, "Preliminary investigations into the incident indicate that the police officers who made the arrest, conducted themselves unprofessionally. "This is because, while there is no law prohibiting a police officer from arresting a studio, the facts surrounding the particular case being investigated by the police officers do not warrant such actions. "The Commissioner of Police Abia State Command visited ABN TV/Radio on 17/1/24, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment. He had discussions with the Director of ABN TV/Radio, and apologized for the conduct of the officers. The matter was resolved amicably." Crime / Invasion Of Our Station By Police Provocative, Attack On Press Freedom — ABN TV by Metrix147: 5:16pm On Jan 17 |
The management of ABN TV has reacted to the invasion of its studio in Umuahia by officers of the Nigerian Police Force on Tuesday, describing it as provocative. https://www.youtube.com/live/MGDJDZJWwr4?si=W85pV0tpUtv-Fw4T In a statement on Wednesday signed by the Director of the station, he said the invasion and arrest of a guest during a live broadcast, is an attack on press freedom. Some officers of Umuahia Area command of the Nigerian Police at about 2:40pm on Tuesday had stormed the studio located in Azikiwe Road Umuahia and whisked away a guest, Udensi Bernard during a live programme, Youth Rendezvous. The police claimed a senior brother of the guest, Uche Onwuka Udensi had written a petition against him over a family matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxmm-kakG6o?si=FnNH1ikAuXRbC6gx Okali said repeated pleas by staff of the station to the officers to allow the programme come to an end before the guest could be arrested, they insisted on whisking him away while the live programme was on. He said, "We find this very provocative and indeed an act of overzealousness by the officers who obviously acted in clear contravention of the rule of engagement. "It clearly also negates the enhanced police-civil relations which the Commissioner of Police, CP Kene Onwuemeile has consistently campaigned for. "When the Director of the media organization who was in Aba for an assignment was informed of the development, he quickly reached out to the Commissioner of Police who immediately invited staff of ABN TV/Radio to properly brief him on what happened, officers on duty barricaded the door and harassed, intimidated and threatened to detain them. "We also want to put on record, during the Gestapo arrest, many of our broadcast equipment were fatally damaged, including a laptop, camera and microphones. "We find this an attack on press freedom and most especially, an open violation of the human right to expression, having taken place during a live broadcast where critical issues about youth development were being discussed. "We demand an open apology from the Abia State Command of the Nigerian Police over this unprovoked attack in our studio. "It has equally left us with huge financial losses following the damage of our equipment. We are also calling for the replacement of the affected tools. "From all indications, the officers were not properly schooled on best approaches to relate with the civil populace in a democratic environment where the media plays a key role in enhancing their relations with the generality of the society." Politics / Catholic Priest Says Otti's Victory At Supreme Court Saved State From Crisis by Metrix147: 6:53am On Jan 16 |
A Catholic priest, Rev. Father (Dr.) Henry Maduka, says the Supreme Court verdict affirming the victory of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, saved Abia from falling into crisis, AbnTV reports. Rev. Father Maduka, the Chancellor of Umuahia Catholic Diocese, said a crisis of unimaginable proportion would have descended upon the state if the judgment had gone otherwise, chief press secretary to Gov. Otti, Kazie Uko said in a statement. This, according to the clergy, was because Abians had completely lost confidence in the previous administration in the state and the party that brought them into the office and had looked forward to a better future in Governor Otti and that was the reason the citizens voted massively for him in the March 18, 2023 governorship election. Rev. Father Maduka spoke on Sunday while giving the vote of thanks at a Thanksgiving Service held at the Mater Dei Catholic Cathedral, Umuahia, as part of the activities to celebrate this year's Armed Forces Remembrance Day. He advised the Governor to sustain the unprecedented achievements he had recorded within just seven months of assumption of office, saying Abia people are excited at the level of development in terms of road infrastructural upgrade and payment of workers' salaries as and when due. Governor Otti, speaking during the service, thanked the clergy and parishioners for their continued support even after the elections and restated his earlier promise not to disappoint the people of the State in the discharge of his duties. "You should continue to pray for us. Remember us in your prayers, day and night; and our commitment is that we will not disappoint you," he said. The Governor thanked God for his victory at the Supreme Court, saying if God had not sanctioned it, it would not have happened. He narrated how he and his team had rushed to the church upon his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the duly elected Governor of Abia State on 22nd March 2023, and ascribed all glory to God. "We may have fought hard, we may have been resilient, we may have worked very hard but if He (God) did not sanction it, it will not happen. And we have therefore come here to thank God, thank the men and women of God, thank the children of God that are here," he declared. In his remarks, the Chairman, of Nigerian Legion, Abia Chapter, Commander Ambrose Nnabugwu (Rtd.) said posterity would be kind to Governor Otti for what he has done for the Nigerian Legion, and Abians generally, within seven months in office. Nnabugwu cited massive reconstruction and maintenance of road networks within Aba and Umuahia and, especially, attention to the welfare of the Legionnaires, as part of Governor Otti's achievements. He expressed hope that the Governor would do more for the members of the Nigerian Legion as the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day is being celebrated. In a homily, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Ukpong noted that it is God, who gives victory, saying that Governor Otti recognises that fact. "This knowledge is important for the continuous success of the administration. Don't forget that the God who has given you victory will demand your stewardship. I must say, so far Abians are happy with your government. Now that every other obstacle have been removed, we have the right to get every dividend of democracy," he expressed. Politics / Chikwe Udensi Congratulates Gov. Otti On Supreme Court Victory by Metrix147: 9:24pm On Jan 13 |
A security consultant with the Inter-Pol systems, Sir Chikwe Udensi has congratulated the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti on his victory at the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court in a lead judgment on Friday read by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji held that the appellants (PDP and APC) failed to prove substantial non-compliance in their appeal. The apex court faulted the appellants for bringing the appeal to the court, tagging it as frivolous and vexatious. Alex Otti had scored 175,466 votes to defeat Okey Ahiwe of the PDP, who polled 88,529 votes in the election early last year. Reacting to the decision of the Supreme Court, Sir Udensi in an interaction with ABN TV on Saturday said the affirmation of Otti's election is affirmation of the will of the people of Abia State. According to Sir Udensi, the governor has successfully weathered the storm of distraction caused by the myriads of litigation, which started from the tribunal, and eventually ended in the Supreme Court. He expressed satisfaction with the steps taken so far by the Governor to redefine governance since May last year when he was sworn-in. Sir Udensi expressed confidence that with the litigations laid to rest, Abians will have more to reap in terms of dividends of democracy in the state. He therefore urged the people of the state to continually offer their support to the Governor, expressing hope that he would tackle the years of rot that has held the state by the jugular. Politics / Drop Your Guns, Negotiate With FG - Ben Kalu Tells Unknown Gunmen In South East by Metrix147: 7:12pm On Jan 07 |
Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has advised gunmen operating in the South East to come out of the bushes, drop their guns, and negotiate for better jobs and a sound future from the Federal government. This is even as he launched a Food-For-Peace Program, to tackle hunger in the South East. Kalu, who addressed journalists in Bende during an All Progressives Congress, APC, stakeholders’ meeting and empowerment program for his constituents, said that President Bola Tinubu has been fair to the South East in appointments and other developmental programs. He lamented that the economy of the South East region was destroyed by the effects of sit-at-home in parts of the zone, which according to him, made many investors of South East origin to flee the area. The Deputy Speaker described the actions of unknown gunmen as an affront to the Federal Government, arguing that resorting to violence was at the detriment of the South East economy and general development. Kalu however advised all the agitators in the South East who are still operating from the bush to drop their guns and embrace the Federal Government’s calls for peace, using the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) as a vehicle. He noted that Tinubu has given key positions to the Igbos including the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Minister of Works, Chief of Naval Staff, and others, he deserves total support of the Igbo nation now and in his future political interests. Kalu disclosed that he is interested in the release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention but said that the process for Kanu’s release can be hastened if enforcers of the sit-at-home and actors of other violent crimes in the South East dropped their guns and embrace peace. “Sit-at-home at-home is the biggest folly. You can’t match or outrun the firepower of the Federal Government. The best approach is to reduce the level of violence in the South East. “Tinubu did not contribute to the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu. Why will we punish him for what he did not do? Calm down, return the guns to the security agencies because PISE-P is designed to create jobs for you,” he advised the unknown gunmen.
