Politics / Tenth National Assembly: A Fair Bargain For South East Overdue, By Ifeanyi Okali by Metrix147: 11:48am On Mar 12, 2023
It was Holly Black who said, "We don't need to be good. But let's try to be fair".

Since the beginning of the current political dispensation in 1999, there is arguably any region that has been unfairly treated like the South East region of the country. It has again resonated with an age-long animosity, strife, and suspicion, leading to a heightened campaign for self-determination and balkanisation in sheer contrast to the dreams of our founding fathers.

Apart from being the only zone that has not produced an elected president since Independence in 1960, South East has in what some persons have described as a conspiratorial gang up been perennially relegated to the background in power equation and balancing since 1999. Worrisomely, while the South West region for instance can boast of producing the country’s leader for the second time in former President Olusegun Obasanjo and now the president-elect Bola Tinubu, the same also goes for the North West region which has produced a president twice in the botched administration of Umar Musa Yar’Adua of blessed memory and the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, both of who are from Katsina state.

In all these, one may be tempted to ask, where is the South East region? Nigeria stands on the tripod of three major ethnic groups – the Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa which some have christened WAZOBIA. The Hausa and the Yoruba have enjoyed the support and active backing of Ndigbo in emerging as the country’s leader when the South East overwhelmingly backed the election of Obasanjo in 1999 and later Yar’Adua in 2007 who unfortunately passed away before the end of his first term in 2010.

The amplified call for the South East to receive reciprocating support from other regions of the country to produce the president has not yielded any fruitful results. Irrespective of brazen injustice and alienation against Ndigbo, they have continuously shown faith and commitment to nation-building and peaceful co-existence. All lobbies and appeals for the major political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the South East have remained a voice in the desert and no one cares to listen.

When President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 emerged as President along with his vice, Yemi Osinbajo, expectations were high that the third citizen (Senate President) would ordinarily emerge from the South East in the spirit of equity and fairness. That expectation was however slaughtered on the slab of politicking and mischievous permutations. That was the first time in the history of Nigeria that a whole region missed out from number one to the fourth leadership position. While Bukola Saraki (Yoruba) emerged as the Senate President, Yakubu Dogara (North East) became the fourth in the hierarchy of the country’s authority when he emerged as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Again, one is left but to ask, where is the South East?

While this intervention is not to bore you with the catalogue of injustices Ndigbo have nursed in the very recent periods of our national history, it is worthy of note that these deliberate efforts to murder fairness, equity, and justice cannot be extricated from why we have increasing separatist agitation in parts of the country particular the South East that has not enjoyed the opportunity of leading the country despite its population and contributions to national development and economic growth as clearly seen in their roles in trade and commerce in all nooks and crannies of this country — Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Calabar, Gusau and where have you. South East is not in short supply of ably qualified men and women, who are perfect specimens of competence and character, who have raised the tempo of excellent service in the public and private sector as well as those who have demonstrated selflessness and unpretentious commitment to the project Nigeria.

One patriot standing tall in this league is a former governor of Abia state and the Senate Chief Whip, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu whose voice has resonated so loud in the campaign for inclusion of South East in the nation’s power equation.

In fact, he was practically moving house to house last year, calling on his party the APC, and the opposition PDP to zone their presidential tickets to South East in a national consensus for the president to emerge from that region in 2023. That never happened. Despite fierce criticism by some self-serving “Igbo champions” his consistency in demanding equity and fairness has remained unshaken. This also informed his decision to vie for the office of the Senate President in the 9th Senate, powers that be thwarted that vision, yet he has not failed in demonstrating support and commitment to the leadership and business of the senate and the National Assembly in general as the number four in command in the reverend upper legislative chamber.

He has defended the programmes and policies of the Buhari-led federal government, publicly acknowledged the government’s efforts in blurring the line of discrimination with gigantic infrastructural development as signposted in the second Niger bridge, remodeling of Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu, construction of Port Harcourt-Enugu expressway and litany of projects for which he has marketed the APC-led federal government in the South East.

A cosmopolitan leader, green with ideas on how to position the country on the pedestal of irreversible progress and development, OUK as his supporters call him has a rich network across the country and beyond. There is hardly any state of the country where he does not have friends. His business interests are dotted everywhere beyond the shores of the South East. He has built the bridge of love across the country and honoured with chieftaincy titles in kingdoms all over Nigeria.

As a former governor for eight years, his footprint of excellence particularly in human capital development, infrastructure, education, inclusiveness and prudent management of resources are there for all to see. He is a leader who does not alienate himself from the plight of those he leads. His ability to relate with everyone on a one-on-one basis irrespective of the status difference, call you by your name, seek your opinion on a very critical matter that easily endears him to people and this is a hallmark of an excellent leader.

In the National Assembly where he currently represents the good people of Abia North, he enjoys the support and cooperation of his colleagues in carrying out his legislative functions which have seen quality bills and motions he sponsored see the ray of light. He is popular and well-respected among members of the parliament. The legions of projects he has embarked upon and completed in the last four years is such that has dwarfed the record of any representative from that district in history — the farmers' support, the students' support, scholarships, road infrastructure, empowerment schemes and humanitarian interventions are superbly next to none.

As preparations for the inauguration of the tenth National Assembly gears up, the ruling APC must make good use of this opportunity to douse the flaring temper in the South East and fade the tone of separation by ensuring that the zone is supported to at least produce the number three citizen of the country since the first and second positions are already occupied the Yoruba in the persons of the president-elect, Bola Tinubu and his vice Sen. Kashim Shettima from the North.

Sen. Kalu is a ranking Senator and a senior member of the APC and possesses what it takes to fill this gap, both in experience, composure, candour, confidence, humility, and managerial dexterity. He will be a Senate President for all and it will be a win-win for his party and our country.

Nigerians are not difficult to please and I believe making frantic efforts to incorporate the South East in the scheme of affairs will assuage the bad blood bred by marginalization of the region, especially in this outgoing government where no single South Easterner is in the security architecture.

We can get our acts right in the tenth National Assembly leadership and it begins with the emergence of an Igbo legislator as the head. Sen. Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has the experiential war chest and pedigree to shoulder the responsibility.

Crime / Nigerians In Ethiopian Prison Decry Inhuman Treatment, Seek Govt’s Intervention by Metrix147: 3:47pm On Mar 07, 2023
Nigerians arrested for various offences in Ethiopia have decried alleged maltreatment by the authorities in their host countries, calling on Nigeria’s federal government and relevant agencies to come to their aid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUQksWSbGwo
In a viral voice note, the Nigerian nationals in the country said they have been detained for several months in Kaliti prison without proper feeding and medication and that some of them have lost their lives.

They said some of the have diabetes, spinal cord injuries and other ailments and are not allowed access to medical care. They also said they are being beaten mercilessly by the prison guards, calling for assistance for prison transfer to Nigeria.

“Some of us were arrested at the airport and others in Ethiopia in different cases, we have been asking for forgiveness anywhere we have sinned against our government, our president Muhammadu Buhari, our senators, and the ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“And there are innocent people here in this Kaliti prison, the situation we are facing in this prison is too critical. We are not eating and a lot of us here are very very sick and they are beating us every day and night, with nobody to come to our rescue.

“Our embassy officials are not coming, other embassies — Angola, Cameroon are coming for their citizens and I don’t know what happened. Since April last year that the embassy visited here, no one has seen them anymore and we have complained to them that we need prison transfer back to Nigeria to save our lives”, the voice stated.

An SOS message obtained by our correspondent read in part, “We the Nigerian inmates here in Kaliti maximum prison Ethiopia are soliciting help from the Nigerian government to come for our aid urgently. because we are dying of hunger, lack of medical care, no drinking water, no food stationeries, they give us one spoon of rice in the morning and night without Stew, some of us are sentenced without committing a crime, nobody to speak on behalf of us.

Politics / Group Urges APC To Zone Senate Presidency To South East To Quell Agitation by Metrix147: 6:00pm On Mar 06, 2023
A support group of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC Youths Sentinel has advised the national leadership of the party to zone the office of the Senate President of the 10th Senate to the Southeast geopolitical zone to reduce the separatist agitation in the region.

The group said this has become important in order to do justice to the political agreement between the North and the South, and to enhance national integration.

In a statement on Monday in Abuja by the Southeast Coordinator of the group, Mr. Brown Agunanne, the group said that, in line with the resolutions of the Progressives Governors Forum of the party that power should swap between the North and the South, the Office of the Senate President should naturally be zoned to the Southeast, since the outgoing occupant of the office hails from the Northeast geopolitical zone.

The group noted that in the South, the Southwest produced the Vice President and Speaker for the outgoing administration but now has the President-elect.

The South-South already has the office of the Deputy Senate President while the Southeast only has the Senate Chief Whip despite being one of largest ethnic groups in the country.

Politics / Abia Governorship: They Tried Using Juju To Stop Me - Prof. Gregory Ibe Alleges by Metrix147: 12:07pm On Mar 05, 2023
The Governorship candidate of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State, Prof Greg Ibe has revealed how God has been saving him from diabolical attacks, known as juju.

This is even as he has appealed to Christian leaders in Abia State to partner with him in liberating Abia State from what he called evil powers and elements of backwardness.

Prof Ibe stated these at his campaign office in Umuahia during a meeting with leaders and members 5 blocks of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State chapter.

Ibe revealed that his health began to experience some challenges immediately he declared his intention to contest for the 2023 Abia Governorship race but expressed appreciation to God for keeping him strong.

Ibe who used the meeting to reel out his plans for Abia if elected Governor, lamented the travails of Abia civil servants and pensioners who he said, are in terrible conditions occasioned by non-payment of their wages and stipends.

Ibe who dismissed the claims that he was dead or amputated, explained that the false stories were peddled by enemies of Abia State who are afraid of the coming developmental revolution.

The APGA guber candidate revealed that he has suffered several diabolical attacks by enemies of Abia, assured that God's hands of protection has kept him stronger in the tick of all the challenges.

"Subsequently, there is nothing they have not done to stop this mission of liberating and developing our State. In a desperate bid to stop me, they began spreading false rumours about me. They attacked my health with Juju and began to circulate evil reports that I have been amputated. They enlisted the partnership of some aggrieved politicians who went as far as falsifying someone's WAEC certificate and alleged it was mine."

"In order to make people hate me, they lied that former Governor T. A. Orji is sponsoring me. They even went as far as deploying money that would have been used in bettering the life of our people in funding some collaborators to go to several Courts against me. But no matter what they did, God of Ndi Abia said No!"

On why he offered 500 scholarship to intelligent students from poor homes, Ibe said the educational programs has been extended to Abians and non-Abians which in return, would produce well-trained future leaders.

Ibe, who also explained his free medical scheme in 17 LGAs of the State, said the free health program was used to save the lives of Abians, especially during the period of multiple industrial actions by different government-owned medical facilities.

He further alleged that some powerful persons in PDP denied him guber ticket for his refusal to share the State's resources to a few individuals, which he said, made him to quit PDP.

"Our State is decayed. Hospitals are not functioning. Civil servants and pensioners are being owed in our State. I offered free medical service to Abians in the 17 LGAs which the Abia State government could not give to Abians."

Prof Ibe also alleged that the Abia State government tried to eject his campaign office in Umuahia in a bid to frustrate his guber ambition.

In their responses during the interactive meeting, the Abia priests promised to work with Prof Ibe in the liberation of the State, if he wins the Abia guber.

Politics / Abia Governorship: Igbokwe Sues PDP, INEC, Asks Court To Nullify Ahiwe Candidacy by Metrix147: 6:14pm On Feb 28, 2023
The last may not have been heard of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primaries in Abia State which returned Chief Okey Ahiwe as the flag bearer of the party in the forthcoming March 11, 2023 election.

Reason: One of the aggrieved aspirants Mayor Lucky Igbokwe (Don Lulu) has approached the federal high court, Abuja in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/138/2022, which was transferred to the federal high court in Umuahia presided by Hon Justice E.N Anyadike, where he is seeking a nullification of the second primaries and the candidacy of Chief Ahiwe.

It could be recalled that the PDP Abia State chapter conducted its governorship primaries on 25 May, 2022 which produced the late Prof. Uche Ikonne. In that election Mayor Lucky Igbokwe was the first runner up, behind Ikonne.

However, as fate would have it, the PDP candidate (Ikonne) kicked the bucket before the conduct of the General Election. Rather than elevating the first runner up to become the party's standard bearer, the PDP National and INEC called for a fresh governorship primaries which returned Chief Ahaiwe as the new candidate of the party.

In the amended originating summons filed by Dr J.A AKUBO, SAN, the plaintiff claims among others, a Declaratory relief that he is the authentic candidate of PDP for Abia State Governorship election.

He also sought for Court's declaratory order that Ahiwe is not qualified to contest the fresh primary having not participated in the previous primary election hence his election should be nullified.

Denying the report which emanated from the "Vanguard Newspapers", the Party's Spokesperson, Okey Ezeala described the reports as the handiwork of the People's Democratic Party.

According to a terse statement signed by Ezeala the party distanced itself from the report stating that there is no iota of truth in it, the party also described the report as false, identifying the Vanguard Reporter "Steve Oko" as paid agent of Kalu’s PDP opponent Mao Ohuabunwa.

Ezeala said that the malicious write-up is occasioned by the PDP's fright to accept tomorrow's imminent defeat. According to the party, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu remains the candidate of our great party as both the party and his constituents are satisfied with his performance.

On the allegation of anti-party activities and other offenses, the party labeled the accusations as entirely false, stating that Orji Kalu has always remained a committed member of the party and its progress.

The party's Spokesperson added that there is no record of Orji Kalu campaigning against any of its candidates nor has the Senate Chief Whip campaigned for any other political candidate besides those of the APC.

The party urged its party faithful and the general public to disregard the report and head to their various polling units to cast their votes for its candidates.

The CP flanked by the Commander, 14 Brigade Nigeria Army, Ohafia, Brigadier General Adegoke Adetuyi; and Heads of other agencies cautioned hoodlums contemplating disrupting the peace people of the state are enjoying to have a rethink.

The police boss said, ”My advice to hoodlums is to relocate from Abia because the state will be too hot for them. Those who want to foment troubles during the election should leave now because we won’t allow them.

”We are ready for the elections and we have planned properly to ensure the security of lives and property of residents.

”Logistically we are ready, and we are combat ready. That’s why we are on this confidence- building patrol to reassure residents of their protection.”

On the sit-at-home order by Finland- based self-acclaimed freedom fighter, Simon Ekpa, in South East during the election days, the CP urged residents to disregard the order which, he noted, serves no good purpose.

According to him, the security agencies are not taking anything for granted, hence the show of force patrol and other stringent security measures put in place to ensure nobody disrupts the forthcoming elections in the state.

The CP identified Umunneochi Local Government Area as a flash point due to its multi-border points and assured that adequate security measures have been mapped out.

The commander, 14 Brigade Nigeria Army, Ohafia, Brigadier General Adegoke Adetuyi in his remarks said that although Abia was relatively peaceful, nothing would be left to chances, adding that all security agencies in the state are synergising to ensure adequate security of lives and property.

“While Abia State is observed to be relatively calm, largely due to many effective operations by the various security agencies, the security situation remains unpredictable.”

He noted that the threats by some elements to prevent election in South East geopolitical zone presented “a real challenge that requires aggressive posture through precursor operations in order to neutralize it.”

“This informs the call for the conduct of joint show of force march by all security agencies in the SE geopolitical zone, including Abia State, as part of the plans and preparations for the successful conduct of the election.

Politics / Supreme Court Affirms Ikechi Emenike As APC Guber Candidate In Abia by Metrix147: 5:19pm On Feb 09, 2023
The Supreme Court has affirmed Ikechi Emenike as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State.

A five-member panel of the supreme court led by Tijani Abubakar on Thursday affirmed the judgment of the court of appeal delivered in December 2022.

The Abia APC had held parallel governorship primaries that produced Uche Ogah and Emenike as candidates of the party.

On May 26, the APC declared Emenike the winner of the governorship primary in the state.

On November 11, Binta Nyako, a federal high court judge, sacked Emenike and ordered INEC to recognise Ogah as the party’s governorship candidate in the state.

Both APC and Emenike had filed separate appeals challenging the verdict delivered by Nyako.

Dan Eke, another aspirant, also filed an appeal challenging the judgment of the trial judge that recognised Ogah’s candidacy.

In December 2022, the court of appeal sitting in Abuja affirmed Emenike as the party’s candidate.

In the unanimous verdict, Olabisi Ige, who led the appeal court panel, read out the names of the party members sent by the APC national secretariat to conduct the governorship primary that produced Emenike, affirming that the exercise was valid.

Politics / Court Of Appeal Sacks Greg Ibe As APGA Governorship Candidate In Abia by Metrix147: 9:35pm On Feb 08, 2023
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has declared that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has no governorship candidate for the 2023 election in Abia State, ABN TV reports.

A unanimous verdict of a three-member panel of justices read by Justice Stephen Adah on Wednesday ruled that the failure of the party to conduct a valid primary within the time set by law robbed it of the opportunity to participate in the elections.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had in December 2022 nullified the May 29, 2022 primary of APGA in Abia on the grounds of irregularities in the conduct.

The court presided over by Justice Binta Nyako then ordered the party to conduct a fresh primary within 14 days.

The primary has been marred by controversy with Prof Greg Ibe, Etigwe Uwa and Chikwe Udensi all laying claims to the governorship ticket.

Politics / Abia ADC Suspends, Guber Candidate, Bishop Sunday Onuoha. Others by Metrix147: 10:17am On Feb 01, 2023
The Abia State African Democratic Congress, (ADC) State Working Committee (SWC) on Tuesday 31, January 2023, suspended indefinitely its gubernatorial candidate, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, its Abia Central senatorial candidate, Dr Godson Abraham, and its Umuahia central state constituency candidate, Deacon Iyke Nwoko correspondingly.

The party also disowned one Mr Osita Offor (Ultimate Commander) who parades as the party’s Abia North senatorial candidate even when his name is not domiciled in the INEC list.

According to the release signed by Don Norman Obinna Executive State Chairman of the party and Micheal Elite Eze Ag. State Secretary, the SWC suspended Bishop Sunday Onuoha for orchestrating and promoting schism and factionalism in the party.

They also said that Bishop Onuoha was negotiating to stand down for any willing governorship candidate of another party for a monetary reward using the ADC mandate and failing to set up a campaign council and appointing a DG, 36 days before the 2023 gubernatorial election.

The release further added that he was suspended for not having a campaign manifesto or engaging in reasonable electioneering and making campaign materials available across the state for awareness and effective political engagement.

Onuoha was alleged to be using the party’s mandate to solicit funds from sympathisers and the unsuspecting public under the false pretence of electioneering.

Aside from these, Bishop Onuoha was said to have failed to galvanise, motivate or grant some sort of financial support to the party’s State House candidates.

Rather, he coaxes them to donate money to support the ousted National chairman’s political jamborees and to his ill-fated and deserted flag-off.

The statement reads; "We view his action as a deliberate emasculation of the candidates to jeopardize the chances of the party and its candidates in the forthcoming general election.”

“In other words, his conduct has made our party a public spectacle as well as exposed it to odium and opprobrium.”

In the case of Dr Abraham Godson, the SWC suspended him for openly adopting the Labour party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi and further produced campaign materials containing his and Obi’s effigies.

Aside from this gross anti-party undertaking, he disparaged our party’s Presidential Candidate, H.E. Dumebi Kachikwu on a widely broadcast live radio program.

“Deacon Iyke Nwoko our supposed Umuahia Central State candidate deceived the party by picking its nomination form for the State House of Assembly after he had participated in the PDP primaries and lost.”

This runs afoul of the electoral act as amended.”

He also engaged in activities that caused disaffection among party members when he unlawfully removed two elected Ward Chairmen and women leaders of the Umuahia North LGA.

According to Article 22 section ii, vi, viii, ix, of the ADC Constitution, these activities constitute acts of gross misconduct.

The SWC, after reviewing the activities of the trio was left in the invidious position of preserving the party’s integrity and terminus ad quem or to molly-cuddle them and justifying the tag of mediocre already attached to the ADC.

“We, however, chose the former to preserve our party’s objective which is to enthrone good governance in Abia State.”

“We, therefore, urge Abians not to waste their votes on moles and unscrupulous persons whose aim is to take advantage of our impulses for change to hoodwink us.”

“We shall, as a matter of necessity, adopt a gubernatorial candidate, a senatorial candidate for Abia Central, and a state house candidate for Umuahia central in a few days.”

Politics / Abia PDP Guber: Lucky Igbokwe Kicks Against Plans To Introduce New Contestants by Metrix147: 7:59pm On Jan 31, 2023
A chieftain of the People's Democratic Party, PDP in Abia state, Mayor Lucky Igbokwe, better known as Don Lulu has kicked against plans to introduce new contestants in the race to replace Prof. Uche Ikonne who before his death last week was the PDP governorship candidate in Abia.

Don Lulu in a chat with ABN TV on Tuesday said the new Electoral Act 2022 allows for a fresh primary in the event that a candidate is incapacitated, late or by reason of resignation.

He wondered why those who were not part of the primary election held last year will be part of the Feb. 4 contest to replace Prof. Ikonne.

"One of the things people are wondering about is, those people coming in as new contestants, they have not gone to the 17 local government areas to consult people, people were not invited, especially the party people, just like we did by moving around the 17 local governments.

"Moving around the 17 local governments enables you to know the people's needs, what they want, it's like interacting with the grass root", he said.

Don Lulu who was the youth ambassador of Prof. Ikonne Campaign Council wondered what the reason for introducing new contestants is.

He thanked the national leadership of the PDP for opening the contest for those who took part in the previous exercise that produced Prof. Ikonne as winner.

Don Lulu came second in the contest.

The Abia State leadership of the People's Democratic Party, PDP had micro-zoned its governorship ticket to Isialangwa North, the home local government of the late holder, Prof. Ikonne.

There are indications that the chief of staff to the Governor, Chief Okey Ahiwe may be the favoured aspirant.

Politics / Abia Chief Of Staff Tipped To Replace Prof. Ikonne As PDP Guber Candidate by Metrix147: 7:47pm On Jan 31, 2023
Indications have emerged that Sir Okey Ahiwe the Chief of Staff to Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu may emerge as the replacement for the late Prof. Eleazear Uche Ikonne who before his death was the governorship candidate of the party in Abia, a reliable source told ABN TV.

This comes ahead of the Feb. 4 primary election in which a candidate is expected to emerge from Isialangwa North, the home local government of the late Prof. Ikonne, a former Abia State University, Uturu vice-chancellor.

The party had zoned the ticket back to Isialangwa North to make up for the chances of the zone following the passage of Prof. Ikonne in Abuja after a brief illness at the National Hospital in the nation's capital.

At the moment, Chief Sir Okey Ahiwe, Prince C. O Enweremadu who is the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Barr. Bob Ogu Commissioner for Works have all obtained their nomination and expression of interest forms and are ready to test their popularity among the delegates participating in the primary election.

A source who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity says though the three cabinet members are trusted allies of the governor, the most favoured is the chief of staff who is believed to have demonstrated capacity ever since his appointment by the governor as chief of staff.

His appointment last year followed the resignation of the erstwhile Chief of Staff to the Governor, Professor ACB Agbazuere, from Isialangwa South who had quit to pursue his political ambition, where he is seeking to represent Isialangwa North/South Federal Constituency of Abia State.

Our source said Chief Ahiwe's closeness to the governor in the last one year has given him an edge over other contestants as the governor is believed to have narrowed his choice of a successor to his chief of staff.

Born in December 1966, Chief Sir Okey Ahiwe who hails from Umuire Village in Eziama Ntigha Autonomous Community of Isiala-Ngwa North LGA also has age on his side at 54. Aside from this, as the founding president of Ngwa Patriots Forum, he enjoys the support of the Ukwa la Ngwa political bloc as well as leaders of PDP from the zone.

The Chief of Staff is also believed to be experienced in the handling of government affairs, especially with his closeness to authorities since April last year. He is also one of the front runners without any trace of corruption or any invitation from anti-corruption agencies.

Sources say his loyalty to the governor is unquestionable and is most likely to emerge as the party's flag bearer after the Feb. 4 primary election. The governor is yet to however visibly canvas for support for any other three cabinet members jostling to succeed him.

Politics / WAEC Denies Gregory Ibe’s Certificate As He Faces Fresh Legal Hurdles by Metrix147: 10:13am On Jan 27, 2023
The dream of a Chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA in Abia state, Prof. Gregory Ibe to lead Abia may still be tall as the West African Examination Council, WAEC says it does not have his certificate which he had submitted to INEC as part of his academic qualifications.

This comes as one Prince Uchechukwu Adiele institutes a legal action against Prof. Ibe before a chief magistrate court in Aba, Abia State.

In an affidavit obtained by ABN TV and deposed to by one Mrs. Charles-Ekenma Chioma Ugoeze, the head of administration of West African Examination Council, WAEC Owerri zone, Imo state the council said it could not verify whether a candidate bearing the name Ibe Gregory sat the 1992 November/December School Certificate Examination as such name was not found in its record.

It says rather the name that matched with the examination number 04834360 which Prof. Ibe parades is Ibe Joseph and not Ibe Gregory.

The court had mandated WAEC to produce the certified true copy of Prof. Gregory Ibe's academic record as a witness.

The affidavit reads in part, "That candidate 04834360 according to the Council's records belong to one IBE JOSEPH.

"That the West African Examination Council does not produce or custody duplicate copies of Notification of Results or certificates and is unable to provide any.

"That the physical entry forms for 1992 WASSCE examinations have been disposed of but the entry details for candidate 04834360 for the 1992 Nov./Dec. school certificate examination are as captured and attached herewith as Exhibit WA1.

"That the West African Examination Council certifies that the Candidate on its records is IBE JOSEPH with the entry details as attached.

"That the West African Examination Council states that by its records the Candidate with Examination Number 04834360 bears the name, IBE JOSEPH and not IBE GREGORY and that both names are not attached to the same Candidate's examination number.

"That this Statement on Oath is made in compliance with the Order of this Honourable Court.

"That I verily believe the above-stated facts to be true to the best of my knowledge as found in the West African Examination Council's records".

A 1992 true copy of the original certificate with the number 04834360 bore the name Ibe Joseph.

It was certified on Dec. 5, 2022 by one Akinola Omole, the Deputy Registrar, private candidates' examination department.

This may lay to rest the controversy surrounding the founder of Gregory University founder's academic record.

His victory as the governorship candidate of APGA is currently being contested as an Abuja Federal High Court earlier voided the primary election that produced him and directed a fresh primary within 14 days.

He has however appealed the judgement.

Politics / Group Alleges Assassination Attempt On Abia Assembly Candidate, Hon. Nwachukwu by Metrix147: 1:49pm On Jan 21, 2023
A socio-political group, Abia Youth Renaissance Movement, AYRM has alleged plots to assassinate the Action Peoples Party, APP House of Assembly candidate for Umuahia South constituency of Abia State, Hon. Chibuike Samuel Nwachukwu, called on the security agencies to intervene.

According to the group, the attempt started when Hon. Nwachukwu warned political parties to stop buying permanent voter's cards from locals.

The group in a statement on Saturday said, Hon. Nwachukwu has been receiving threatening messages and calls, warning him to withdraw from the House of Assembly race or "pay a heavy price for it".

The statement signed by the group Lead Coordinator, Chimamkpa Obidike read in part, "This press release has become very our last option in view of the increasing threats from people that appear like political opponents.

"We must also bring to the notice of the entire world, several occasions in which Hon. Nwachukwu has been waylaid by strange faces wielding dangerous weapons.

"Our suspicion is that his waxing popularity among his dear constituents has attracted this desperation to phase him out of existence. If anything should happen to him, the PDP and their leaders must be held responsible", the group said.

AYRM, therefore, called for increased security assistants around Hon. Nwachukwu, saying he needs to be alive and fulfil his divine destiny.

"His people want him for an assignment God has ordained him to carry out which by God's grace is nearer than before" the statement read further.

Crime / AIG Akinmoyede Urges Govt To Create Employment To Fight Cultism, Crimes by Metrix147: 12:08pm On Jan 21, 2023
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9, Umuahia, Isaac Akinmoyede, has called on the government to generate employment for youths and provide an atmosphere conducive to investments, curb cultism and other vices.

He made the call when the Abia chapter of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vicesbpaid a courtesy and advocacy visit to him in his office on Friday.

Zone 9 comprises Abia, Imo and Ebonyi commands.

According to Akinmoyede, one of those conducive atmospheres is security.

He said the police were trying all within their means to ensure the society became secured.

The police boss, who decried the rising cultism, said it had gone beyond the higher institutions and came down to secondary schools.

The former Commissioner of Police in Plateau and Imo, expressed regrets that even artisans were now involved in cultism, saying, “it is really a big headache.”

Akinmoyede said incessant strikes and other circumstances that kept students away from school, had always led to the rise in street cultism.

He said, “But thank God the schools are up and doing again, and it is believed that when schools are kept busy, there will be reduction in vices in the society.

“Policing is not an easy task, all what is required is continued support from members of the public and the POCACOV, to ensure that we are able to do our job in the best possible way.”

The AIG who commended the group for doing a lot for the police and the society, pledged his support “and in any way I know I can contribute towards the growth of POCACOV, I will do so.”

Earlier, the Abia Chairman of POCACOV, Mrs Adanma Odefa-Wachuku, who led the delegation, lauded the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, for setting up POCACOV.

Odefa-Wachuku described community policing as the present and future of policing “because all the criminals, cultists and others who engage in other vices are from families and communities.”

According to her, POCACOV has the same objective with the police, which is to curb cultism that is worsening on the streets.

ABN TV reports that POCACOV is a community-driven initiative of the Nigeria Police to sensitise different stakeholders to the dangers of cultism and other vices.
