We must align decisively with the centre to transform national gains into regional progress,” Kalu said. He highlighted several achievements of the Tinubu administration in its first two years, including $50.8 billion in proposed investments, ₦9.1 trillion in revenue generation in the first half of 2024, and $23.4 billion in foreign remittances. He also noted the success of the CNG initiative, which is expected to save ₦2 trillion monthly in fuel imports. Kalu announced that the RHP will establish Renewed Hope Councils in every local government area of the South East, linked to the South East Development Commission (SEDC), to drive grassroots implementation of federal policies and projects. He listed the recommencement of the Port Harcourt–Maiduguri rail corridor, set to unlock ₦50 billion in trade annually, and the SEDC’s partnership with the UNDP for a regional masterplan as key indicators of federal commitment to the region. The Deputy Speaker further appealed to the Federal Government to prioritize critical infrastructure in the region, including construction of gas pipelines, dredging of the Onitsha River, and expansion of Onne port and energy plants in Imo State. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has continued its monthly rotational stakeholders' meetings, which aim to foster unity, reconciliation, and strategic planning ahead of the 2027 general elections. The latest APC Ohafia LGA Stakeholders Meeting was held in Nkporo and hosted by Hon. Chief Robinson Otuwe Kalu Orji, former APC candidate for Ohafia North State Constituency of Abia State. Speaking with ABN TV after the meeting, Prince Emma Nwosu, Chairman of APC Ohafia LGA, described the gathering as fruitful, focused on resolving internal issues and strengthening the party's grassroots structure. “This is a regular meeting involving the three clans in Ohafia. The last was hosted in Ohafia by Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu, and this month, Nkporo is the host,” Nwosu said. “For more than six months now, we've consistently held meetings geared towards uniting and reconciling party members as we prepare for 2027. Today’s meeting was well-attended despite the Easter festivities and was productive in addressing potential areas of disaffection.” Nwosu expressed confidence in APC’s rising popularity across Abia North, stating that many individuals, including high-profile politicians, were defecting to the party due to its growing appeal and performance. “APC is the party to beat. People are coming in large numbers, and many more are waiting for the platform to be more stable and united before joining,” he noted. “We are building peace within the party because no political house can stand without peace. We are also sensitizing and encouraging non-members to join us.” He attributed the party’s growing support to the developmental strides of its elected representatives, particularly in infrastructure, education, and empowerment across Abia North, as well as the economic reforms at the federal level under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “The country is undergoing economic recovery, and though it's painful now, we’re seeing signs of stability. Fuel prices and foreign exchange are gradually stabilizing, which points to better days ahead,” Nwosu added. Amid rising security concerns across the country, the Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive steps to address the deteriorating situation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DM0KQd9BkM Speaking from China in a video posted on his social media page on Monday, Senator Kalu expressed deep concern over the worsening insecurity, particularly in Borno and the South-East regions, stressing that the situation must be handled devoid of political sentiments. Reacting to Governor Babagana Zulum’s recent alarm that parts of Borno have been lost to insurgents, Kalu warned that if urgent action is not taken, more territories — including the South-East — could fall into the hands of terrorists. "The Minister of Information is doing his job, but Professor Zulum is right. If the Federal Government doesn't take the right step in Borno and the South East, those areas might collapse," Kalu warned. The former Senate Chief Whip and Chairman, Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission, urged the Federal Government to increase funding and logistical support to security agencies. He also called on the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, to consult with security chiefs and accurately brief President Bola Tinubu on the true state of security in the country. Kalu further appealed for an end to verbal exchanges between the Minister and Governor Zulum, saying such disagreements do not help the fight against insecurity. "For me, Professor Zulum and the Minister don’t need to argue. These are fundamental issues. If we don’t tell President Tinubu the truth, the country may become ungovernable," he said. Commending the efforts of the Nigerian Army, Police, and other security agencies, Kalu stressed the need for greater investment in intelligence gathering, equipment, and manpower, especially in vulnerable regions. Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that his elder brother remains the man with the solution to Nigeria's numerous challenges. Speaking with ABN TV on Tuesday, Prince Emmanuel described his brother as a "Prisoner of Conscience," who is being unjustly held by the Nigerian government despite his clear vision for justice, equity, peace, and good governance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9839dgO8baA According to him, "Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not the problem of Nigeria; he is actually the solution Nigeria needs to overcome its current challenges — from insecurity to corruption, from marginalization to bad governance." Prince Emmanuel lamented that rather than engage Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in dialogue or explore his ideas for a better society, the Nigerian government chose to incarcerate him unjustly, branding him a threat instead of recognizing his vision for peace and justice. "The truth remains that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a prisoner of conscience. He is not in detention because he stole public funds, killed anyone, or committed any crime. He is in detention because he spoke against injustice, oppression, and marginalization," he added. He further emphasized that if the Nigerian government can swallow its pride and engage Kanu in genuine dialogue, many of the country’s problems will find lasting solutions. "Kanu is a man of ideas, peace, and wisdom. He has always advocated for peaceful coexistence, equity, fairness, and justice. Silencing him will never silence the truth he represents," Prince Emmanuel stated. Prince Emmanuel Kanu called on the international community, human rights organizations, and lovers of peace across the world to intensify pressure on the Nigerian government to unconditionally release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Abia State is poised for a new era of technological advancement, as the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (formerly Abia Polytechnic), Engr. Dr. Christopher Kalu Okoro, has emphasized the critical role of technology in shaping the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVoFOAoD0s4 Speaking during the Abia Technology and Innovation Network Tour, Dr. Okoro described technology as the driving force behind innovation, economic growth, and problem-solving in modern society. "Technology is the way— the only way to play," he stated, explaining that while science seeks to expand knowledge, technology applies that knowledge to solve real-world challenges. He highlighted the dynamic nature of technology, noting that as new discoveries are made, they create fresh challenges, which in turn fuel further technological advancements. According to the Rector, technology is not just about innovation but also about job creation and economic development. He stressed that individuals with digital and technological skills have greater opportunities to apply their knowledge, contribute to economic growth, and generate income for themselves. Dr. Okoro reaffirmed the polytechnic’s commitment to expanding its programs in line with global trends, stating that the institution is fully aligned with the vision of Governor Alex Otti’s administration to drive technological progress in the state. "We are ready to support and improve any initiative that fosters technology and innovation in Abia. If we don’t have what is needed, we will seek the necessary support from the government. Our students and innovators deserve access to the best resources," he assured. He further revealed plans to strengthen collaboration between the polytechnic and the Abia Technology and Innovation Network (ATIN), ensuring that individuals trained at different tech hubs across the state receive National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) certification. This partnership will enable trainees to earn both local and international certifications, boosting their competitiveness in the global tech space. The visit, which was part of the ecosystem tour organized by ATIN, saw key government officials, including Dr. David Kalu, Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, engage with tech leaders and innovators. A tragic gas explosion at Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Asa, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, has claimed the lives of two people and left ten others critically injured, ABN TV reports. The explosion, which occurred on the morning of March 25, was reportedly triggered by a faulty gas valve, causing widespread damage within the facility. During an exclusive interview with ABN TV, the Mayor of Ukwa West, Hon. Pastor Dike Briggs Nwankwo, recounted the immediate steps taken by his office upon receiving news of the incident. Hon. Nwankwo, who suspended all official engagements to visit the scene, described the devastation caused by the blast. “The social media was flooded with various reports, some claiming that as many as 20 people had died. I immediately left my office and rushed to the factory. When I arrived, I was taken straight to the affected section, where I saw that the explosion had completely ripped apart the roof. Sadly, none of the victims were present, as they had already been taken to the hospital,” he said. According to him, CCTV footage reviewed by the factory’s management and local authorities confirmed that the explosion occurred while a customer was handling a gas cylinder valve. “My deputy, who has expertise in the gas business, helped analyze the footage. He confirmed that the incident was caused by a faulty valve, which led to the explosion,” the Mayor explained. While confirming that two people had died, he debunked claims of a higher death toll. “Twelve people were affected—two have died, and the remaining ten are receiving treatment at a hospital in Port Harcourt. As of this morning, I can confirm that they are responding well to treatment,” he added. When ABN TV correspondent contacted the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Maureen Chinaka, she confirmed the explosion and stated that investigations were ongoing. "We are aware of the incident at Inner Galaxy in Ukwa West. The explosion resulted in fatalities and injuries. Our officers are on the ground, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause and any possible lapses in safety protocols," DSP Chinaka said. She assured the public that the police would work closely with other relevant agencies to ensure that those responsible for any negligence are held accountable. The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has strongly condemned the recent decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) permission to challenge a Federal High Court ruling that barred it from retrying former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, over an alleged N7.1 billion fraud. In a press statement signed by its President General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, and made available to ABN TV, COSEYL described the development as a politically motivated attempt to harass and discredit Igbo leaders. The group expressed concerns over what it called a violation of constitutional principles and a threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s judicial system. “The Federal High Court had previously discharged and acquitted Senator Kalu after a thorough legal process due to insufficient evidence. However, the sudden move by the EFCC to push for a retrial raises serious questions about the true intentions behind this legal battle,” COSEYL stated. According to the youth group, the timing of the retrial suggests a political agenda rather than a genuine effort to ensure accountability. It alleged that certain forces were using the case as a tool to weaken the influence of the former governor, whom it described as a leader dedicated to the welfare of his people. COSEYL urged the EFCC to maintain its credibility by avoiding political interference in its operations. The group warned that pursuing a retrial after an acquittal could erode public trust in the judiciary and set a dangerous precedent for politically motivated prosecutions. “We call on the EFCC not to allow itself to be used for political permutations ahead of the 2027 elections. Justice should be based on facts and legal merit, not on political interests,” the statement concluded. The retrial of Senator Kalu has sparked reactions across political and legal circles, with many closely monitoring how the case unfolds in the coming months. In a bid to decongest correctional facilities and ensure speedy justice, the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Lilian Abai, has granted freedom to five awaiting trial inmates and approved bail for fourteen others at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Umuahia, Abia State. The landmark jail delivery exercise, conducted on Wednesday, is part of ongoing judicial reforms aimed at addressing prolonged detentions caused by case delays and the inability of prosecutors to present witnesses. Justice Abai, while presiding over the exercise, lamented the plight of some inmates who had spent over six years in detention without trial. She noted that their prolonged incarceration was due to accusers' failure to provide evidence or witnesses in court. Some of the released inmates were also granted freedom on health grounds after a careful review of their cases. To address the challenge of delayed trials, the Chief Judge issued a directive mandating chief magistrates in Ikwuano and Umuahia South Magisterial Districts to hold weekly court sittings at the correctional center. According to her, this initiative will help reduce the burden on correctional officers responsible for transporting inmates to court and ensure faster judicial processes. She further urged magistrates to remain diligent in their duties and prevent unnecessary delays that could keep inmates in prolonged detention. While encouraging the freed individuals to reintegrate positively into society, she warned that future offenders may not benefit from such judicial leniency. Reacting to the exercise, the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Umuahia Branch, Uche Igwe, commended Justice Abai for her intervention, describing it as a crucial step toward upholding justice and preventing innocent individuals from suffering due to judicial inefficiencies. Governor Otti To Revisit Agreement With Abia Pensioners The governor made this known during a church service at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia Chapel, held to celebrate the 80th birthday of Senator Chris Adighije. Speaking on the controversy surrounding pension payments, Governor Otti emphasized the need for honesty and accountability. Dokubo also highlighted infrastructural developments, arguing that past administrations deceived the people by claiming the state's difficult terrain made road construction impossible. "They told us our terrain was too bad. Now we know our terrain is not bad," she said, implying that Governor Fubara's administration has been able to initiate road projects where previous leaders failed. She further commended the governor for his peaceful approach to governance and elections, stating that Rivers people have witnessed a process devoid of violence and bloodshed. Addressing the budget impasse between the governor and the state assembly, Dokubo criticized those opposing Fubara’s administration, accusing them of creating obstacles to governance. "You made it impossible for him. He wrote, 'I am coming to you.' You locked him out. He wrote again to say, 'I will still come again.' And you replied to him with insubordination charges," she recounted.
