A suspected kidnap kingpin, popularly known as Evans, who was arrested by police in Lagos on Sunday, said that he chose to collect ransom in dollars to be different from other kidnappers.

The suspect, while being paraded at the State’s Police Command in Ikeja, told newsmen that he started the business of kidnapping in 2015, after he left his spare parts business.

He claimed that he lost N20 million to customs officers, which made him to leave his trade.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect was arrested in his mansion in Magodo area of the state on Saturday.

Evans, who wasn’t sure of how many people he had kidnapped, said the highest he had collected as ransom was one million dollars.

“I can’t figure out how much I have collected so far or how many people I have kidnapped, but I have kidnapped up to 10 since 2015.

“I choose to collect ransom in dollars to be different, and the maximum I have collected as ransom so far is 1 million dollars.

“I work in two groups, a team moves with me to kidnap victims while we hand over to the other team that takes the victim to the hide out.

“Kinsley introduced me to kidnap, but I usually get my ammunition from one Chinedu and Ehis whom I met at Ago-Iwoye.

“I also do drug business that enabled me to buy my property,” the suspect said.

The Force PPRO, Jimoh Moshood said that the suspect had collected billions of naira from his victims and had property in and outside the country.

He said that Evans was declared wanted in 2013, following a kidnap attempt that was foiled by the police.

“He is said to have masterminded several kidnap cases in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and South-South states,’’ the police said.

Moshood said further investigation into his activities were ongoing

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday evening, joined the Otaru of Auchi, HRH, Alhaji Aliru Momoh, (Ikelebe III) and other Muslim traditional and religious leaders to break the fifth day of the Muslin Ramadan fast at the Otaru's Palace in Auchi, Estako West Local government Area of the state.

He said the visit was to show solidarity with Muslim fellows as well as encourage them to continue to pray for the state, country and speedy recovery of president Buhari.

"Ramadan is one of the key pillars in Islam. We decided that in the spirit of brotherliness, we come and felicitate with you and be grateful to Allah for making the country come out stronger despite the economic challenges," he said

Meanwhile, the Otaru of Auchi, appreciated the governor for joining Muslims in the state to commemorate the fasting period, adding that the visit was divinely inspired and would go a long way to strengthen religious harmony in the state

The traditional ruler also commended the developmental strides of the Governor Obaseki-led administration and assured of his Palace's support.

"We will be behind you, you are doing your work quietly. There is a road being constructed to Awain now. You are superbly divine to do things for this state just as it were with your predecessor", the Otaru said.

The traditional ruler added that there was need for everyone to continue to pray for the well-being of President Buhari as he had brought Progressive change to the country.

Indonesia, a South East Asia emerging economy, has indicated interest to purchase more crude oil from Nigeria.

Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Harry Purwanto, who stated this in Abuja when he paid a courtesy visit to the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, explained that his Country’s President Joko Widodo, had instructed Indonesia National Oil Company, Pertamina, to direct its attention to Nigeria in its quest to meet that country’s surging energy needs.

The call by the ambassador signifies the prospects of soaring Nigeria’s market share in Asian emerging economies which include China and India, having lost grounds in crude oil sales in the United State of America due to advances in shale oil exploration in recent years. Although Indonesia produces 900,000 barrels of crude oil per day, its supplements its 1.4million barrels per day consumption with supplies from Nigeria, 18 per cent and Saudi Arabia, 28 per cent.

Speaking during the visit of the ambassador to his office, Dr Baru, who welcomed the development, said NNPC was interested in working with Indonesia on its initiative to replace firewood and kerosene with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as primary domestic fuel for cooking.

Dr Baru said the corporation was aware of the huge success of the kerosene substitution programme in Indonesia and would like a collaboration to help Nigeria achieve a similar feat.

The GMD said NNPC would also like to partner with Indonesia in the area of bio-fuels production to diversify the nation’s energy mix and meet its energy needs.

He challenged Indonesia to consider participating in the forthcoming bid round in order to realize its aspiration of maintaining a presence in the Nigerian oil and gas sector.

The Indonesia Ambassador disclosed that his country looked forward to lifting crude oil directly from Nigeria, rather than through a third-party as is currently the case.

He extended an invitation to the corporation to grace the Indonesia-Nigeria Business Forum holding in Lagos, adding that a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, on possible areas of co-operation between the two countries was in the works.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday intervened in the inter-bank market to the tune of 482.6 million dollars in the first trading day after the Democracy Day celebrations.

A statement issued by its Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Isaac Okorafor in Abuja said that this was part of measures to underline its determination to guard the international value of the naira.

Okorafor said that a breakdown of the intervention indicates that the retail Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) was allocated 285.7 million dollars, while the 100 million dollar was offered in the Wholesale SMIS auction window.

The Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) window got an allocation of 52 million dollars, while the invisibles segment, comprising Basic Travel Allowance (BTA), Personal Travel Allowance (PTA), medicals and tuition fees, among others was allocated 45 million dollars.

Okorafor said that the interventions were in line with the Bank’s resolve, echoed by the Governor, Godwin Emefiele at last Tuesday’s briefing of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

While expressing pleasure that the intervention of the bank had ensured stability across all segments of the Foreign Exchange market, Okorafor expressed optimism that the bank’s objective of exchange rate convergence would be achieved soon.

Okorafor reiterated his call to all stakeholders to play their respective roles in ensuring a smooth running of the Foreign Exchange market for the overall benefit of the economy.

According to him, surveys in Abuja, Lagos, Kano and Port-Harcourt on Tuesday indicated that the dollar traded to the Naira at an average rate of N375 to one dollar

British Airways has cancelled all flights from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports as a global IT failure causes severe disruption for travellers.

The airline said it has suffered a “major IT systems failure” and apologised to its passengers.

BA said terminals at Heathrow and Gatwick have become extremely congested and it is cancelling all flights from the airports until 6 p.m. (1700GMT). It is urging passengers not to go to the airports.

Earlier, passengers at Heathrow reported long lines at check-in counters and flight delays.

BA has not said what is causing the computer problem, but said it was working to resolve it as quickly as possible.
