The Senate has urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of Department of State Security (DSS) to recover its mace, forcefully removed at the chambers by suspected hoodlums on Wednesday.

The call followed a resolution by the lawmakers at the end of a closed-door session held immediately after the removal of the mace, the symbol of authority for the legislature.

Deputy President of the Senate, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, who announced the call on the security chiefs while presiding at plenary with another mace, said that the legislature would not be intimidated in any way.

He said that while the Upper Chamber was awaiting the “return’’ of the mace, it would continue with its legislative activities, adding that the lawmakers would not be terrified in carrying out their constitutional duties.

“This morning, we had an unusual incident at the chambers in the senate.

“At about 11.30, some armed thugs invaded the senate chambers, assaulted some of our staff and some of the media persons and forcefully took away the mace.

“They passed through the entrance and the gate and left the National Assembly with the mace. They attempted kidnapping two of our senators.

“They were eventually left, but we decided that we will not be intimidated by the circumstance. We will stand by and defend our democracy.

“We have decided to go through everything on our Order Paper for today even if it takes us till 6 p.m. We will conclude everything here because that is what we are being paid to do.

“We are going to get to the root of this matter, and I believe that I speak the mind of all of you here if I say that security agencies must recover our mace within 24 hours.

“We are giving the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Security (DSS) 24 hours to recover our mace,’’ he said.

Ekweremadu decried the incident and said that it was not only an affront on the senate, but on democracy.

He assured that the lawmakers would not be distracted, stressing that they would stand together while continuing with the assignment of representing Nigerians.

He thanked the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr Yussuf Lasun, who led members of the chamber to the senate in solidarity over the incident.

In his remarks, Lasun assured senators of Representatives’ continued support, adding that they would not be deterred from carrying out their responsibilities.

“I have read a lot of books about representative democracy and what baffles me most is the fact that the ones that try to demean the institution of the assembly are pretenders to the institution of democracy.

“This means that once your assembly ceases to function or you ostracize or you want to muzzle it, definitely you are no longer practicing democracy.

“Due to the way some of us started practicing politics, a lot of Nigerian populace does not agree with the fact that we have to develop the institution of legislation, that it must be well strengthened.

“Once you do not do that you should as well forget about democracy.

“We decided to visit to show solidarity not with you alone, but to tell Nigerians that this assembly must make sure that democracy works in Nigeria.

“We are in solidarity with you and we will make a resolution to ensure that the mace is recovered within 24 hours,’’ he said

The Police in Jigawa on Monday said two persons, Mati Bako, 17, and Tanimu Kwalle, 25, had been killed by landslide.

The Police Spokesman in the state, SP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.

Jinjiri said three others, Sani Haruna, 31, Aliyu Yusif, 30, and Nazifi Yusuf were injured, adding that the incident occurred in Babura Local Government Area of the state.

He said the incident occurred in Barima village at about 1:40 p.m. while the victims were digging sand in a burrow pit.

“Today at about 2:20 p.m., the Police in Babura local government area received an information that at about 1:40 p.m., a burrow fit fell on the following people; Mati Alhaji Bako aged 17, Tanimu Kwalle aged 25, Sani Haruna aged 31, Aliyu Yusuf aged 30 and Nazifi Yusuf aged 20 all of Barima village in Babura, while digging sand.

“As a result, Mati Bako and Tanimu Kwalle died on the spot while the other three sustained various degrees of injury,” he said.

The police spokesman said that victims were taken to hospital by the policemen where the duo were confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

He said that the corpses of the deceased were released to their families for burial, while the injured ones were receiving treatment in the hospital.

“No foul play was suspected in the incident,” he said.

Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Zuwaira Hassan, on Friday, confirmed that 14 people died in the state following outbreak of cholera and Lassa fever.

Hassan made this known while briefing newsmen at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBU- TH) Bauchi during her visit to the cholera quarantine ward.

According to her, nine people died as a result of cholera outbreak, while Lassa fever claimed five lives.

She said “since the outbreak of these epidemics, we have had a total of 324 cases of cholera and recorded nine deaths.

“Right now, the cholera isolation centre is active and we have about 26 patients on admission who are being treated.”

On Lassa fever, Hassan said there were 44 suspected cases, nine confirmed cases, while five persons had been confirmed dead so far.

She stressed the need for proper hygiene and urged residents to avoid open defecation, saying faeces in open places could pass and mix with drinking water which was dangerous to health.

She said community volunteers were out on sensitisation to educate the people on hygiene and environmental sanitation, while the state Ministry of Health chlorinated water and decontaminated the environment.

According to the commissioner, five local governments affected by the cholera outbreak are Bauchi, Toro, Darazo, Tafawa Balewa and Ganjuwa.

She urged the people to come to treatment centres as soon as they started having symptoms of cholera as the treatment was free.

She commended Federal Government for quick intervention to support Bauchi State Government in tackling the outbreak.

Nigerian model, Chika Lann’s alleged N40 million signature hairstyle, is generating buzz on the social media.

Lann, who shared the information in an interview with an online television, wears her hair in several long strands of woollen threads strung together to form a ‘basket like’ shape.

When asked about the inspiration for her signature hairstyle in the interview, she replied, “Talking about my hairstyle, this hairstyle is worth 40 million”.

The top model and fashion enthusiast added that she loves to showcase her unique personality and thus, her personality is hard to understand.

She said, “I have been asked on several occasions about this question. Sometimes is not really easy to understand my personality.

“I love to be unique. Because when you look around you will see that everyone style look alike and I am the kind of person that can spend any kind of money.

“I can go through any kind of stress or inconveniences just to stand out from the crowd,” Lann added.

Her claim was met with skepticism and clap backs from some Nigerians on social media, especially Instagram, who argued that the hair could not cost so much.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, March 16, has expressed condolences over the passing of the Bishop of Kafanchan Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Joseph Bagobiri. Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the resident on Media and Publicity, in a statement said Buhari sent a condolence message to the government and people of Kaduna State, the Catholic faithful in particular, and the Christian community in the country at large.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has uncovered an illegal voter registration centre in Offa, Kwara State.

INEC Administrative SecretarySecretary in Kwara, Mr Paul Atser, made this known in a statement in Ilorin on Friday.

“It has come to the notice of Independent National Electoral Commission, Kwara State that some unscrupulous persons are carrying out illegal registration of voters in Offa Local Government area,” Atser said.

According to him, the perpetrators of the illegal registration were using Corel Draw application to change the particulars in a scanned INEC PVC.

The INEC official said one suspect was arrested and undergoing interrogation by the police.

“The general public is advised to be watchful and ensure that they go to only INEC designated registration centers to be captured for the PVC,” Atser added.

He said a list of all designated centers were available at the INEC State office as well as INEC offices in the 16 local government councils in the state.

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson has said PDP is a national asset owned by all Nigerians and not by any individual. The Governor in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Francis Ottah Agbo in Yenagoa on Sunday, also described Professors Jerry Gana and Tunde Adeniran as icons of democracy and leaders of progressive politics in the PDP and the country, stressing that they must be wooed back to the PDP fold.

Dickson who is also the Chairman of PDP Reconciliation Committee believed, while the leaders of the party are important stakeholders in the scheme of things, the the real stakeholders of PDP are the ordinary Nigerians in whom sovereignty lies. The Governor said the most rational thing for all PDP stakeholders to do now is to start a process of building consensus and reaching out to players across party lines with the PDP leading the coalition to wrest power from APC in 2019.

The statement reads:”No one Governor, no one Lawmaker or leader of PDP can own PDP or singlehandedly produce a presidential candidate. Therefore, what is required of PDP leaders now is to work with all parties including those who have left the PDP to produce a credible candidate that is acceptable to the generality of Nigerians on the platform of PDP to defeat the APC in 2019.”

The Governor said his Reconciliation Committee will continuously engage aggrieved party members including those who have left PDP to return to the party, stressing that “we must be together to save our party and country from collapse. ” He said with less than one year to the 2019 general election, time is of essence and the right thing to do now is for all men of good will to come together to challenge the APC.

The Governor also called on PDP members not to lose faith in the party. He said the next election is critical to the survival of democracy and the nation, stressing that history will be unkind to PDP leaders if they fail to lead a coalition to unseat the APC-led Federal Government, which he noted has put the nation on a precipice!

Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday lauded an international organisation, Ford Foundation for donating $600,000 (about N216million) towards the architectural design and commencement of the iconic Lagos Museum Project to be located in Presidential Lodge and Lagos House in Marina.



The Governor has also unveiled plans by the State Government to build a modern museum in Ikeja to promote arts and sciences in addition to the Marina museum.



Speaking at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja when he received a delegation from Ford Foundation led by its Executive Vice President in charge of Programs, Ms. Hilary Pennington, Governor Ambode said the two iconic tourism structures, which are in line with the vision of his administration to transform the State into world class tourist destination, would be completed within the next two to three years.



The Governor commended Ford Foundation for the confidence reposed in the State with the partnership, saying that the collaboration, coming from an internationally reputable organization such as the foundation, had served as a motivating factor for the State Government to do more for the people in the sector.



According to the Governor, “We had said we are going to have our own Lagos Museum and the dream is being spearheaded by Ford Foundation. The funding for the architectural work, the design and the initial workspace of the Museum is being funded through the foundation and I am happy to announce that they are making a total donation of $600,000 to us for the commencement of this project to ensure that whatever it is that we put down as Lagos Museum actually reaches that world class status that we want our Museum to be.



“There is a National Museum in Lagos but it does not belong to Lagos State and so we are very proud that we want to sustain our own heritage and we are very proud also that Ford Foundation has also decided to do a road show for us to go across Europe and other parts of the world to bring interested donors to come and partner with us to make the museum a reality.



“In addition to the Lagos Museum which we have decided will be within the Lagos House and Presidential Lodge in the Onikan axis, it is our intention also to construct another museum in the Ikeja axis that will be called the Contemporary Museum of Arts and Sciences and it will be in the location where the Lagos Arts Council is presently,” he said.



The Governor said the efforts to build iconic tourism structures for the State were in line with the promise of his administration to put the State on global tourism map and use the sector to promote excellence in the State.



“All these are in line with our Project THESE which stands for Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment and Arts and Sports to promote Excellence in Lagos which we promised our people. I want to thank Ford Foundation for this partnership which I know will be beneficial to most Lagosians



“With the efforts of the Ford Foundation, I am inspired to put my hands in putting two iconic structures within the State in the next two to three years and I believe strongly that this support will actually make us to fast-track the number of years that these projects can come into fruition,” Governor Ambode said.



Earlier, Pennington said the delegation was at Lagos House in furtherance of the partnership with the State Government on the Lagos Museum project, saying that the foundation was honoured to be collaborating with the State.



“We are honoured to partner with you and to support your vision for the Lagos State Government to build an iconic cultural space to make available to all diverse cultures and protect the heritage of this great city and to create space that will be opened to people from all over the world to see and learn about the heritage of this city.



“This is a great city; it’s one of the world’s great cities and it deserves the kind of iconic space that you are creating and we are very honoured to be part of this,” Pennington said.

A Kano based society lady, 38-year-old Maryam Umar aka Kofar Mata, has been arrested and charged to court for impersonation, possession of police uniform, Criminal conspiracy, harbouring of miscreants and other related offences.

Maryam who is alleged to be a serial fraudster, was arrested on February 11th and was immediately arraigned in Court 29 at Sabon Gari, Kano on February 12th.

Mallam Bala Nasidi from the community where Maryam was residing, commended the police for arresting her and added that such people should be thoroughly investigated and that the law should take its course.

Another member of the community, Danladi Sambo, who spoke on her arrest and arraignment said “Her cup is full. She wears very deceptive looks as she preys on her victims. She called herself Kofar Mata. She is often sited at big time parties in Kano”.

Meanwhile, a police source, who chose to be anonymous, said they have been on the trail of the suspect for a while until she was eventually arrested with a Police uniform in her possession.

The suspect has been in remand in police custody as the court adjourned the case for further hearing to February 28th.

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Saturday declared Mansur Mashi of the All Progressive Congress (APC), as the winner of the supplementary election into the Mashi/Dutsi Federal constituency.

Prof Hudu Ayuba, the returning officer, said Mashi scored 30,719 votes against 22,690 votes scored by Malam Nazifi Yusuf of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He said in the supplementary election held in the six affected polling units in Dutsi local government the APC scored 934 votes while PDP got 217 votes out of the 1,177 votes cast.

Similarly, in the nine polling units in Mashi local government area the APC scored 1,6332 against PDP’s 676 votes out of the 2,231 total votes cast .

Ayuba said these scores were added to the previous votes recorded by the political parties during the bye election conducted in May 2017 to arrive at the final result .

Ayuba announced that a total of 3,382 votes were cast during the Saturday election out of the 9,089 registered voters in the affected polling units.

He said the number of valid votes was 3,370 while 286 votes cast were rejected.

NAN reports that the election into the Mashi/Dutsi Federal Constituency which was earlier won by Mashi was nullified by the Election Petition Tribunal due to “substantial non compliance with election rules and regulations”.

The Court of Appeal upheld the decision of the tribunal and ordered supplementary election in the 15 polling units.
