Late Mr Gugu Terwase Godwin, the Organising Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, who
was murdered by unknown gunmen in what appeared like a robbery attack at a business centre where he stopped over after closing from work on May 13th, has been laid to rest.

Speaking at the funeral on Tuesday, May 23, a party faithful and an elder in the area Mr Alex Gondo described the deceased as a strong supporter of justice and one who could make uncommon sacrifices for his people.

He appreciated the love shown to the family since the demise of the APC chieftain by party supporters and other sympathizers and particularly acknowledged the concern of the leader of the party in Gwer - West, Chief Titus Zam.

Also speaking, former council Chairman from the community Mr Godfrey Choughul, condoled with the family of the deceased by urging them to remain focused and be consoled with the fact that Mr Gugu though young, left a legacy of truth and love which will always remain memorable.

In their separate comments, the Sole administration of the council area Mr Dennis Akaa and Hon Francis Ayagah the flag bearer of APC in the forthcoming local government elections in Gwer West, pledged their support to the family and urged the family members to always look up to God for guidance and direction during trying moments.

In his remarks, the leader of APC in Gwer- West, Chief Titus Zam, expressed how saddened he has been with the sudden departure of someone he described as energetic and too young to die.

According to Zam, Gugu was a close confidant and a trust worthy son of the people.

He stated that immediately he got the news of the death of Gugu, he made so many inquiries into the murder of the loyal party man and concluded with the tough moment that his demise was perhaps divine.

Artistes were billed 100k each to bring Moji's body down. If 50 of us contributes 100k, we have 5million which is about $15k (medical rate) Many didn't contribute a penny.

Justice Rifkatu Sha of Jos High Court on Tuesday warned an accused person, Tasiu Mohammed, 21, against threatening witnesses testifying against him.

The warning came when Mohammed was caught making gestures indicating that he would slash the throats of the witnesses, while they stood in the dock.

The police, witnesses and officials of the court, who noticed the threats, immediately alerted the judge, who warned Mohammed against such contempt.

“You are only luck that the prosecuting counsel did not pray the court to convict you (accused) for contempt, otherwise I would have descended on you.

“I will only warn you to desist from threatening witnesses in the court. If you repeat it, I will start by sentencing you to 14 strokes of the cane,” she said.

Mohammed, along with two others – Saidu Mohammed, 19, and Umar Shehu 23 – were first arraigned on Feb. 13, charged with criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, robbery and possession of firearms.

The police prosecutor, Mr O. S. Osho of the State Criminal Investigation Department, at the arraignment, told the court that the accused persons committed the crime on Sept. 23, 2016 at Clark Quarters, Bukuru in Jos.

Osho quoted the accused persons as telling the police, in a confessional statement, that they killed a man, who approached them for help.

“The accused persons confessed that the deceased, who came into Jos at about 7 p.m. on the said date, approached them to direct him to where he could lodge, before proceeding on his journey the next day.

“The accused persons said that they promised to help, but on realising that the stranger had money on him, they misled him to an uncompleted building where they killed him.

“They further said that after killing him, they dumped his body in a well in the uncompleted building, and made away with his money.”

Osho further quoted the accused as saying that luck, however, ran out on them when a woman, who resides in the quarters, heard screams emanating from the building, and rushed to check.

“The accused persons also told the police that they ran out of the building on sighting the woman, but that she went in and saw blood everywhere.

“The curious woman checked further and saw the corpse of the unknown man dumped in a well in the building,” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor said that the woman raised an alarm and reported the matter to the community head.

Osho told the court that the woman recognised the accused persons, while they were fleeing from the scene, as the same boys that had been terrorising the community over time.

The prosecutor, however, said that the identity of the deceased was still unknown as no form of identification was found on him, while the corpse had not been claimed by anyone.

During the arraignment, however, the prosecutor also alleged that the first accused, Tasiu Mohammed, had committed the same crime sometime in 2014, when he was 18 years old.

Osho said that Mohammed was then tried as a juvenile, found guilty and convicted for murder.

He said that Mohammed, however, escaped from the juvenile home after some months and relocated to Abuja and had only relocated back to Jos, when he committed the same crime and was arrested.

The prosecutor added that the accused persons’ action contravened the provision of section 221 of the Penal Code and was punishable with death, on conviction.

A Jigawa Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday remanded the immediate past governor of the state, Alhaji Sule Lamido, in prison till May 4, for alleged incitement.

Chief Magistrate Muhammad Lamin refused the accused bail and adjourned the case till May 4, for the continuation of the case.

Lamido is standing trial on a four-count charge of inciting public disturbance, defamation of character, criminal intimidation and disturbance of public peace.

The offences contravened sections 113, 114, 392 and 394 of the Penal Code.

His counsel Yakubu Ruba and Felix Jones said that the offences were bailable and wondered why the court did not grant the accused bail.

Lamido was arrested by the police in Kano on Sunday for the offences.

Former senate president has revealed that Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan lost the support of key members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who either went to the opposition or discreetly worked against his re-election because his wife was suspicious of those around him.

In an advance copy of ‘Against the Run of Play’, a book written by Segun Adeniyi, Mark further stated that Jonathan and his wife turned Aminu Tambuwal, former speaker of the house of representatives, into a political foe.

Jonathan’s relationship with Tambuwal was frosty because he had emerged as a speaker against Patience’ design.

Tambuwal, as speaker, eventually defected from the PDP to the then opposition – the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mark said he tried to defrost the relationship, but Tambuwal was still looked upon with suspicion.

“I took him (Tambuwal) and Emeka (Ihedioha) to the president for a meeting where they gave assurances that they would cooperate and work with the government. But there was always a concern from the Jonathan camp that Tambuwal was an ambitious politician,” he said.

The former senate president also said that the former first lady had fears that he was nursing a presidential ambition as well.

“I guess she (Patience) had the same fear about me even when she never said it to my face. She once accosted Senator Joy Emordi to say, ‘Joy, I hear you are the manager of David Mark Presidential Campaign Organisation’, which was a baseless accusation.

“I had to meet the president to clarify issues with him. So, I would say it was President Jonathan and his wife who radicalized Tambuwal and turned him into a political foe.”

The book will be launched on Friday, and Abdulsalami Abubakar, former head of state, is expected to chair the event.

Nigerian senate on Tuesday adjourned plenary to condole with the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, representing Osun west district.

The Ede-born senator died on Sunday morning at a private hospital in Osogbo.


Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan cited order 43 and moved for the senate to observe a minute silence in honour of the late senator.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki adjourned the sitting till April 26, 2017.

The Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, confirmed on Monday that Federal Government set to procure 20 aircraft to make Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) Zaria a centre of excellence.

The minister, who disclosed the development at the launch of the new aircraft, Dimond DA24NG in Zaria on said that the new aircraft would improve the training capacity of the college.

He observed that the current aircraft in use were highly expensive to maintain, adding that the college would now be more competitive and dynamic in the global aviation industry.

Sirika lauded the efforts of the management of the college especially for introducing courses in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

“I am aware of efforts by NCAT to run National Diploma and Higher National Diploma, be rest assured, you will have our full support and that of the president.”

The minister charged staff of the college to seek for more knowledge in view of the fact that the world had changed from resource based economy to knowledge-based.

Earlier, the Rector of the college, Capt. Abdussalami Mohammed, said currently there were 29 trainer aircraft in the college.

“These aircraft used for ab-initio training TB9, Trinidad TB20GT and Beech Baron 58 are old, the earliest being purchased 15 years ago and quite expensive to fuel and maintain,” he said.

The rector said the new trainer aircraft would significantly improve the flight training experience and reduce operating cost.

He added that the newly acquired aircraft was equipped with glass cockpit and garmin 1000, which would make it easier for graduating pilots to transit to new generation commercial aircraft.

The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of two businessmen – Labbo Giyawa and Murtala Dantata – by some unknown gunmen.

El-Mustapha Sani, the Command’s spokesman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Monday that the two men were kidnapped at Giyawa, Goronyo Local Government Area of the state.

Sani said: ”I can confirm the abduction of the two businessmen on Sunday night, at around 10 p.m.

”They were seized by some gun-wielding men, while they were reportedly sleeping in the frontage of their various houses.

”They were said to have been taken to an unknown destination, but the police is suspecting that they were being held captive in the nearby Gundumi Forest.”

He, however, said that the kidnappers were yet to establish communication with either their families or the police.

Sani said that the command had taken stern measures to ensure the safe rescue of the captives.

The police spokesman also confirmed the arrest of four gang leaders of street urchins at the Kwanni area of Sokoto on Monday.

Sani said that the suspects were arrested following raids on their hideouts, adding, ”we will thoroughly drill them to unravel their various memberships.”

NAN recalls that two local government officials in the state who were recently kidnapped were rescued from Gundumi Forest.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal, has made a u-turn on his appearance before a Senate panel investigating the Presidential Initiative on North East (PINE) Thursday.

The SGF was billed to appear before the ad-hoc panel on the investigation led by Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna).

But the SGF had on Wednesday written the panel that he would not appear before the panel because he had approached a court on the matter.

However, in a new letter Thursday, the SGF asked the panel to give him another date for the appearance.

He said the request became necessary because the Senate panel's hearing of Thursday clashed with "a pressing engagement of government."

A syndicate of four persons suspected to be specialists in producing unwholesome bread have been arrested by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Akwa Ibom.

According to Mr Collins Ogedegbe, the Head of NAFDAC in Akwa Ibom, who led the inspection team, the suspects were arrested at Ekpemiong Itak community in Ikono local Government of the state on Wednesday.

He said the team worked with the Police to expose the syndicate, adding that cases of production of unwholesome bread with pirated products were rampant in the state.

“Although the prime suspect, simply identified as Emeka is on the run, no fewer than four persons were arrested when the Police stormed the factory at Ekpemiong Itak community,” Ogedegbe said.

He said NAFDAC officials sealed the facility, carted away hundreds of fake bread, including fake wrappers and labels of other quality bread in the area.

Ogedegbe said the syndicate had been using wrappers and labels of other quality bread as cover to sell unwholesome bread.

He said that the agency would stop at nothing to ensure the enforcement of quality control regime on food products in the state.

He said that investigation had begun to ascertain whether the company’s operations complied with the regulatory demands of the agency.

“We are going to check for the company’s name in our documents whether it has been registered; whether it conformed to the regulatory framework or not.

“Necessary penalties would be slammed on the suspects, If found guilty at the end of investigation,” he said.

The Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Ikot Ekpene, Mr A.S. Bello, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects would be arraigned in court after investigations.

He appealed to the civil society to complement the services of the Police in the task of riding the society of fraudsters and criminal elements.

He said that Nigerians could help the Police in uncovering activities of criminals and suspicious characters in their neighbourhood by volunteering useful information.
