The Federal Government’s plan to attract investment in modular refineries as part of efforts to boost local refining capacity has started gaining momentum with an Indonesian firm, PT Intim Perkasa Nigeria Ltd, a subsidiary of PT Intim Perkasa, Indonesia, indicating interest to build a refinery in Nigeria. Mr. Adi Hartadi, the Head of Investor Relations of PTPP (Persero) Tbk, partners to PT Intim Perkasa Nigeria Ltd, who disclosed this in Abuja during a business meeting with the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, stated that the proposed refinery would be located in Akwa Ibom State. The refinery, a modular one, will have refining capacity for 10,000 barrels per stream day. Mr Hartadi stated that their company has more than 50 years of experience in construction and engineering and it was desirous of diversifying into downstream operations in Nigeria. Responding, the NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, who was represented by the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Refineries and Petrochemicals, Engr. Anigbor Kragha, stated that NNPC placed high premium on investment in the nation’s refining sector. The GMD stated that the Corporation had a Greenfield Refinery Department that specialized in new refinery projects and also provided professional support to potential investors in modular refinery in the country in line with the Federal Government policy on modular refineries. He explained that the country’s three refineries with a combined capacity of 445,000bpd could not function optimally over the years due to lack of investment, adding that NNPC would give necessary support to the Indonesian Company interest in the downstream sector. “On our end, we have embarked on ambitious plan to fast-track programmes to restore our capacity utilization from 30 per cent to a minimum of 90 per cent in the next 24 months. To do that, we are working on securing financing from third parties, not just funding, but also technical expertise to help us increase our performance to world class levels that they should be,” Dr. Baru stated. He explained that given Nigeria’s expected population, by 2025, more than 40 million litres of petrol would be required for local consumption, adding that the combined capacity of the nation’s 3 refineries would only be able to satisfy just above 50 per cent of the projected local demand. He expressed optimism that with this kind of investment coming steadily, Nigeria could serve as a regional hub of refined petroleum products for West Africa and beyond. He called on the investors to be mindful of clean fuel policy across African countries and ensure that they produce fuels that meet specification with regards to sulphur content. Earlier, Dr. Dwiyatna Widinugraha, Third Secretary for Economic Affairs, Indonesian Embassy in Nigeria and the leader of the Indonesian delegation, stated that the visit was a follow-up to the earlier visit by the Indonesian envoy to NNPC, the bilateral meeting between the Indonesian Trade Minister with his Nigerian counterpart as well as the visit of Indonesian Prime Minister to Nigeria. It would be recalled that the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Harry Purwanto, had recently expressed interest in purchasing more crude oil from Nigeria during a courtesy call to the NNPC GMD, Maikanti Baru. The total number of graduate applicants in the N-Power job recruitment scheme as at June 18, is 753,307 thus exceeding the total number of both graduate and non-graduate applicants in 2016 by 2,307. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job creation, Mr Afolabi Imoukhuede, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba, Delta, on Sunday describing the figure as landmark. He said that the figure for 2017 was generated barely five days after the application was opened on June 14, while the applications for the previous year were got during the two and half months it was opened. According to the SSA, N-Teach, the teacher volunteer aspect of the scheme, got the highest applications so far with 470,456 while N-Agro the Agriculture extension section of the scheme followed with 127,315. He said that N-Health generated 85,691 applications while the latest component, the N-Tax, generated 69,842 applications in five days. Imoukhuede said that in 2016 the total graduate applicants were 350,000 being less than 50 per cent of the applications already received in less than one week of entries for 2017. He said the reason for the large number of applications might be because “a lot of graduates now have faith in the scheme unlike last year when many were a bit skeptical and refused to apply.’’ He said that in spite of the number, the Federal Government would restrict itself to the recruitment of 300,000 graduates in the current scheme in order not to exceed the programme’s budget for the period. Imoukhuede hinted that the selection process would maintain same transparency as in 2016 and expressed gratitude that the hiccups in 2016 registration was completely absent in 2017. He added that everyone to be engaged this year must satisfy the recruitment requirements outlined in the advertisement such as age and academic qualification as well as completion of the NYSC scheme. The SSA noted that the N-Power was a lifeline provided by Muhammadu Buhari administration to curb the high rate unemployment rate in the country as promised during his presidential election campaign in 2015. According to him, volunteerism is a global scheme performed free by those working in other countries but Buhari has promised N30, 000 monthly stipends to each graduate volunteer in the country. He advised the youth to take advantage of the scheme to improve their employability skills and also add value to the society especially in the rural areas. He said the N-Power had received a lot of commendations from the public since its inception. He showed NAN a particular commendation by one Lucky Odiase who also begged the“leaders to let N-power be the hub for employment to all federal jobs’’ because “it is so transparent.’’ Other commendations had come from Olajide Abiola, Cyril Onyeama, and Umar Mohammed who hailed the engagement of N-power with the youth on timely responses to queries and concluded that it showed that “the country can get things right’’. One Gabriel Atume simply wrote “God Almighty will bless PMB (Buhari) and Osinbajo a thousand folds for bringing dividends of democracy to the grassroots’’. NAN reports that the applications for 2017 will last from June 14 through July 13. (NAN) http://www.metronaija.com/2017/06/n-power-753307-graduates-apply-in-5-days.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has condemned in strong terms today's invasion of Sun Newspapers publishing house by armed men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), saying; "It should now be clear to all Nigerians that the country is under the siege of tyranny." The governor, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said Nigerians should remember that he warned that no one will be spared by the time the tyranny of the President Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) government turned full-blown. The governor said he was particularly miffed that the imposed EFCC Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu chose to use the commission to settle personal scores with The Sun Newspapers, having threatened to sue newspaper outfit over its report on a property allegedly traced to his (Magu) wife. "Nigerians, especially the media should remember that when they started with the DSS invasion of Akwa-Ibom State government house and later the Ekiti State House of Assembly, I warned then that no one will be spared eventually. "When they invaded judges residences in the night and arrest them like terrorists, I also warned that the media will be next. "By invading Sun Newspapers today and holding the staff hostage for hours, it is clear that the EFCC under Magu has become a monster that is capable of consuming the rights of Nigerians to freedom of expression. "It is sad that after experiencing democracy for 18 years, the media in Nigeria is again being visited with the kind of tyranny witnessed under the military. "It has therefore become necessary that Nigerians, irrespective of their political parties must rise in condemning today's invasion of Sun Newspapers. "The media must also rise against this EFCC tyranny and particularly in solidarity with Sun Newspapers because it is The Sun Newspapers today, no one knows which media organisation will be next," Governor Fayose said. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/06/fayose-condemns-efcc-invasion-of-sun.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The Lagos State Government on Sunday declared Monday public holiday to mark June 12 celebration in the State, saying that the State remains committed to the ideals of the annulled 1993 Presidential election. In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello on behalf of the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the government said the holiday was in honour of the ideals which June 12, 1993 Presidential election represents being a day that the country experienced an election that was adjudged as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. The Governor said 24 years after, the ideals of June 12 commemoration were worth celebrating, describing the day as one of the most defining moments of the country’s political history which has positively shaped its democratic rule. Governor Ambode said the time has come for Nigerians to go beyond the commemoration and entrench a viable democracy as a way to immortalise the late presumed winner of June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief M.K.O Abiola through the practice of true federalism and conduct of credible and fair elections. He said: "June 12, 1993 is a day we must not forget in the annals of our democratic history. Our present democratic experience may still be far from the ideal but we must all make concerted efforts to entrench fiscal federalism which is the only way to achieve true nationhood.” Continuing, Governor Ambode said part of the enduring lessons of June 12 election is that it imbued the patriotic and nationalistic zeal in all Nigerians to speak with one voice to make a political choice devoid of ethnic, racial or social sentiments. “On June 12, 1993, majority of Nigerians across all divides demonstrated through the ballot box that irrespective of class or ethnic sympathies, the Nigerian people are united and would always join hands to promote our unifying values,” he said. Governor Ambode said though the peoples’ hope was dashed with the annulment of the elections by the military junta, the lessons of the elections cannot be wished away despite subterranean efforts by many to do, describing June 12 as the real Democracy Day in Nigeria. “We owe it a duty to genuinely immortalize the fallen heroes of the June 12 struggle nationally and deepen our democratic values to ensure that never again will such anti-people action be allowed to take place”. He also assured that his administration remains committed to the ideals of June 12 by carrying out people-oriented programmes across the State and making life more comfortable for the people. Meanwhile, the State Government, through the office of Civic Engagement, has perfected arrangement for the annual public symposium which will hold at the De Roof, LTV 8 in Ikeja, to celebrate June 12.
