Police in Rome on Monday said they have arrested a 36-year-old Liberian man in the kidnapping and rape of a 26-year-old Nigerian woman last Saturday night, November 19th. According to leading Italian news agency, ANSA news online, the woman, a newcomer to Rome, was unsure how to get home and heeded the man’s offer to accompany her on a bus. She told police the man took her to the unfamiliar outlying neighborhood of San Basilio. Once off the bus, he covered her mouth and dragged her to a derelict building frequented by the homeless where he bound, gagged and raped her. The victim managed to free herself of the gag after about an hour and screamed for help, attracting the attention of passersby who called police. First responders found her tied up on a mattress in a state of panic. Ad-hoc staff of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and members of the National Youth Service Corps serving in Ondo State have been warned to stay away from the forthcoming governorship election in the state. The ominous warning was conveying via a terrifying message telling them to stay away or they would face death. Though no one or group has laid claim to the death threats which has circulated the state as tension keep mounting towards the election which is scheduled to hold on Saturday, November 26, 2016, the police in the state has assured all that everything has been put in place to forestall any outbreak of violence. Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Monday, signed into law, a Bill prohibiting land grabbing, forcible entry on landed property, violent conducts, armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and other allied offences. The Governor, who signed the bill in the presence of the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Illiyasu; State Director, Department of State Security Service, Kabiru Sali; Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General of the state, Dr. Olumide Ayeni and other members of the State Executive Council, assured that Ogun State would not be a comfort zone for any criminally-minded individual or group, especially the land grabbers also known as "Omo Oniles." Governor Amosun who assured that his administration would not allow criminals to operate in the state said, "kidnapping is alien to us in this part of the country and we have come to put an end to it as it now attracts 25 years jail term." Speaking with journalists after the Bill was signed into law, Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Suraj Adekunbi, thanked the governor while adding that with the signing of the bill into law, "everybody would now sit tight and know that Ogun State is no hiding place for criminal elements." On his part, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Illiyasu said this is a clarion call for all criminals in the state to change their ways. Edo State new governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said he would begin work immediately with a view to making the state the true heartbeat of the country. Obaseki spoke before a huge crowd that gathered at the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia stadium to witness the swearing in ceremony. He emerged the fifth governor of the state since it was created in 1991. Both Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu earlier swore to oath of allegiance administered by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa. Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole and his wife, Iara, were the cynosure of the crowd as the drove into the venue. In his speech, Obaseki said he would hit the ground running to deliver on his campaign promises of bringing prosperity to the state especially in the creation of 200,000 jobs. Obaseki identified ICT as the key component of realising his objectives, as he promised to make proliferation of broadband as a priority. The jobs, according to Obaskei, would be created by focusing on the state's comparative advantage in agriculture, agro-business, commerce industrialization, entrepreneurship, technical and vocational skills. Obaseki promised to boost agribusiness in the state by keying into the value chain of abundant cash crops in the state. He promised to employ more workers into the state civil service as well as optimize job creation potentials. The new governor stated that agriculture would be the focus of his socio-economic programme and that he would move Edo out of its current subsistence farming to commercial farming. Obaseki said he would consolidate on the gains of Governor Oshiomhole by completing all on-going projects as well as promote women and youths empowerment. On healthcare, Obaseki promised to partner with relevant stakeholders to make Edo the centre of excellence in health care delivery. He said he would strengthened the criminal justice system for quick access to justice as well as support the police and other law enforcement agencies for speedy resolution of disputes. Obaseki noted that the task to build the state is the responsibility of all citizens and as such he would harnessed ideas of other political parties for the good of the state. According to him, "We will help small and medium scale enterprises by creating an enabling environment for them to thrive. Edo State government will establish a one-stop shop to provide incentive and support to make it easier for our people to provide goods and services. "We will continue to consolidate on the gains of the last eight years by continuing the infrastructural revolution and urban renewal intimation which our Comrade started. "We will continue to improve on educational infrastructure by building more schools to ensure that education is available to all Edo children. We will equally pay attention to the development of our intra-city roads network to enhance urban dwelling comfort and ease traffic. Lastly, we will complete all ongoing projects. He stated that after a hard fought campaign, he was willing to gather ideas that have been articulated by all parties and integrate them for the transformation of Edo State. "We are studying and will continue to study this ideas and seek with diligence to select what holds promise for our people and our state. The task ahead is not that of government alone; we are all in this together to bring enviable change to Edo State irrespective of our political, religious or ethnic differences. "The tasks is to bring change to Edo. To make Edo the state of or dream and the true heart beat of Nigeria. Justice Rabi T. Umar of the Bauchi State High Court will today, November 9, 2016, decide on the bail application of Nasiru Inuwa Illelah, Muhammad Adamu Gana and Adamu Yunus who were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for fraudulent conversation of the sum of N6,000,000 (Six Million Naira) only and issuance of a dud cheques. Ordeal of the trio started on April 18, 2016, when a case of obtaining money by false pretence and issuance of dud cheques was reported to the Commission by one Alhaji Garba Maigana against the above accused who are the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer respectively of the Hospital Management Board of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Services Technical and Recreation Services Employees and its leadership. The petitioner alleged that sometimes in January, 2016, the trio lured him by requesting for the supply of a truck of a 50kg Labane rice to the union in Bauchi State. In his own part, the complainant reported that he delivered to them a trailer load of rice (600 bags) valued at N6, 000,000.00 under the false pretence that Local Government staff were to be the beneficiaries. He was also made to believe that payment would be effected through direct deduction and be affected in two monthly installments against January and February, 2016 salaries. In soliciting his trust, he was issued with two post-dated Sterling Bank cheques numbers 13894740 of 5th February, 2016 and 13894740 of 5th March, 2016 which were separately lodged and returned dishonored for insufficiency of fund. All efforts to get them pay back the money yielded no fruits as they were eventually found out to have diverted the goods elsewhere for their personal benefit. Malam Gimba Ya’u Kumo was born on the of November 5, 1959, in Gombe, Gombe State. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1983 and a Master’s degree in Business Administration and Management (MBA) from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi in 1999. He is a member, Nigeria institute of Management (NIM), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (FCITN), Fellow of the African Business School (ABS), Fellow of the Institute of Research & Leadership Technology (IRLT), Member of the Institute of Management Executive & Administration of Nigeria (MIMEA), Member of the Nigeria Institute of Certified Credit Administrators (AICCA). He was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria on the 4th December 2010. His tenure ended in August 2014.
