CareerSigns You’re Too Close To Your Boss by metroparrot(op): 7:22pm On Jun 06, 2017
By Nkem Ndem

If you work the 9-5, chances are that you have a boss. You are probably sold on the idea that the closer you are to your boss, the better your chances of keeping your job and moving up the ladder.

This is because ass-kissing and butt-licking are key tenets of the Nigerian corporate world; they form the basis of most work-related relationships.

Alternatively, you may just be genuinely in awe of your boss and you want to learn as much as you can from them.

Whatever the case, your aim is to get close to your boss while maintaining respect and professionalism…and that is great. You should keep it balanced, as an inordinate amount of closeness may actually work against, you rather than for you. But, how can you tell when the balance has been tipped and you are getting too close?

You trade office gist with your boss
You are not a snitch, you are not ‘telling on’ your colleagues, but you are just letting them know what the others say behind her back. Your boss, on the other hand, tells you what the CEO is planning, who is about to get sacked, and who grates on nerves the most.
In fact, you are the first to know all the “Oga-at-the-top” gist and your colleagues come to you to confirm rumors about the boss or the company.

If your boss feels that comfortable with you, you want to take a few steps back.

You bring food from home for your boss
Perhaps your boss is an expat and has not tried that particular dish, or they just enjoy your cooking. The fact that you are so close, that they feel comfortable enough to eat something you brought from home, then, your relationship is definitely not balanced. It has transcended the boss-staff level and y’all are operating on an Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King level.

You give unsolicited advice
Sometimes your real friends do not even want unsolicited advice from you, but you and your boss have since gotten to that place where you can easily dish out unsolicited advice.

You actively help them make decisions about work and even personal life. Sure, if they want to share personal things, there is nothing you can do about it. However, when you find that you feel comfortable dishing out advice, it may be time for you to walk.

You have shared a bed with your boss
Of course, it doesn’t have to be a sexual encounter…but that counts too. No matter how good your relationship or how well you can tolerate each other, there are certain things you have to draw the line at. One of them, is sharing the same bed.

No matter the circumstance of the office trip, whether you have run out of money and it looks like there are no other options, there is a better option than sharing a bed.

Sleep on the floor, perch on the couch, do not set yourself up for that kind of closeness….but if you don’t see anything wrong with it, you definitely are too close to your boss.

You hang with your boss outside of work
Sure you sometimes have to attend certain meetings with just your boss, there is the out –of-town office retreat where you two are paired for bonding exercises. Of course, there are the occasional lunch break moments where you are invited to discuss work-related ideas as well.

You don’t want to be that one person who did not show up your boss’ wedding or their child’s naming ceremony so you honour the invitation.
These are totally normal activities you can do with your boss when you have a smooth relationship. But when you start to have drinks, just for the fun of it, after work; attend each other’s church programs or try new restaurants together…it could be a red flag. You probably should cut back on the closeness.

You miss your boss when you are on leave
You spend every day of the week at the office and you work with your boss… from 9 am to at least 5 pm every day. Yet, when you are finally on leave, you find that you miss them and you keep texting/e-mailing in the pretext of checking up on work.

It not a romantic thing either, because you are in a serious relationship and there is no attraction whatsoever. You are just too fond of your boss, and they can pass for the sibling you never had. When you start to experience these feelings, you definitely are too close.

They call or text you at any time of the day, sometimes for no particular reason
The word “boundary” does not apply in your relationship with your boss. They can call you at any time of the day, maybe even midnight, even after you have just spent the whole day together at the office, to ask you a random question on a topic that is not even work related.

Sometimes it could be to remind you to do something personal for them on your way to work the next day. It could be a sign that they are thinking about you a bit more than they should, or just that you are getting too close!

You are hated for being “the Boss’ favorite”
Even when the facts show that you met and exceeded your KPIs, people in your office do not believe because they believe your boss has just fabricated the results because you are favoured above all others.

Your colleagues speak in hushed tones around you because they are afraid you will go and whisper it all to the boss. In as much as they loathe you, they are afraid of doing you dirty, because they know the boss will come at them for it. If this is your situation, it’s a huge clue that you are too close to your boss.

You end your work e-mails with “Bleep” or “xoxo”
Exchanging formal e-mails are no longer part of your work ethics when it comes to your boss. You don’t even bother to start with a greeting or state the facts. You send jokes to each other, including memes and sarcastic quotes and end the same emails with phrases like “I love you” or “Bleep” and “xoxo”. You are well aware that your relationship is not appropriate as you cannot separate that loving friendship from your professional, working relationship…but you just love your boss.

It is what it is.

PoliticsPDP National Assembly Endorses Gov. Wike For 2nd Term by metroparrot(op): 5:46pm On May 31, 2017
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus of the National Assembly has endorsed Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for a second term.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu declared that the endorsement is a fallout of Governor Wike's excellent performance, which has transformed Rivers State.

He spoke on Wednesday when he commissioned Ulakwo II-Afara-Nihi Road in Etche Local Government Area constructed by the Wike administration.

He said: "If you take the statistics and look at what Governor Wike has done in two years , I can safely say that he has done more than all APC Governors put together ".

The Deputy Senate President said that Governor Wike has changed the story of Rivers State from a state where insecurity was rife eight years ago, to the centre of development projects in the country.

Ekweremadu said: "A lot more will still happen over the next six years of Governor Wike's leadership. Governor Wike is creating economic corridors which will enhance economic development. More of Wike will transform Nigeria ".

He expressed satisfaction with the statewide execution of projects by Governor Wike, saying that the sustained commissioning of projects across Rivers State in the last three weeks indicate that the governor is a true example of good governance.

In his remarks, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike stated that only the PDP can salvage Nigeria, because leaders of the party have the right vision for the development of the country.

He said while the APC prefers giving excuses for non performance, the PDP has remained committed to the delivery of quality projects.

The governor berated the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for trying to play politics with the development of the state. He warned the Managing Director of NDDC against taking further steps to undermine development of Rivers State as the people will resist him.

He assured Etche people that he will continue to execute people oriented projects to cater for their developmental needs. He said in the next five weeks, his administration will commission two other roads in Etche and flag off a road.

Member Representing Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency, Chief Jerome Eke described the roads constructed by Governor Wike in Etche Land as life saving. He said the economic and political relevance of the roads will be felt during the next campaign.

Rivers State Works Commissioner, Iheanyichuwu Bathuel said that the 8-kilometre road was constructed to link communities in the area.

Managing Director of Lubrik Construction Company, Golbert Sassine said that the Rivers State Government has paid in full for the construction of the road.

EducationUniversity Of Ibadan Suspends Student Union Activities by metroparrot(op): 8:22pm On May 30, 2017
The University of Ibadan (UI) management has suspended all student union activities following a protest that resulted in a shutdown of the institution.

The university’s head of public relations, Olatunji Oladejo, confirmed the development on Tuesday.

“The Union Executive Council and Students Representatives Council have been suspended. All activities of the union and council have been suspended, too,” Mr. Oladejo confirmed.

He explained that the university’s management engaged with students over the weekend to discuss their grievances and that the vice chancellor called an emergency meeting of the university senate on Tuesday at noon.

“That meeting revealed all the issues that led to where we are; that is, postponement of the first semester examinations for the 2016/2017 academic session,” Mr. Oladejo said, adding that the university senate made the decision to suspend student union activities “until further notice” at the conclusion of the meeting.

It would be recalled that University of Ibadan students embarked on a protest demanding that the institution provide them with student identification cards, as promised months ago. Students also lamented the university management’s indifference to their welfare.

Responding to the protest, Vice Chancellor Olayinka Idowu, on Monday, announced the closure of the school and suspension of the semester’s examinations till July 17.

All undergraduate students are expected to leave the university campus today.

EducationBREAKING: UI Shut Over Students’ Protest by metroparrot(op): 5:34pm On May 29, 2017
The management of the University of Ibadan on Monday shut the institution and directed the students to vacate the campus on or before 6 p.m.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the students had earlier taken to the streets of Ibadan in protest, alleging insensitivity on the part of the university management.

But the university’s Director of Communications and Publication, Olatunji Oladejo, told NAN that the closure became necessary in other to avert crisis.

He said that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, had convened an emergency meeting of the university Senate to review the circumstances surrounding the development.

“The University of Ibadan in its wisdom has decided to shift the examination earlier scheduled for June to July, 2017,” Oladejo said.

He said that undergraduate students are to resume back in school on July 17, while the post graduate students would continue to stay on campus for their research activities.

The students at a congress on Saturday passed a resolution to disrupt the forthcoming examinations if students were not provided with identity cards.

They also asked the authorities constitute the Students’ Welfare Board as well as allow use of cooking appliances that had been banned in the halls of residence.

Nairaland General6 Ways To Respond To Anger by metroparrot(op): 11:49am On May 24, 2017
We live in increasingly stressful times with people flaring up over little and trivial things. At this point, it’s fair to say that the knowledge of how to handle anger or angry responses is essential. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 6 ways to respond to anger.

Listen

When a person is angry all they really want is to vent their feelings out to someone, howbeit violently. Unfortunately, this zeal to vent falls on those who are at closest proximity to them. One great thing to do is to simply listen to the person express their anger until they calm down or wear themselves out. Simply hear them out.

Do Not Analyse

Avoid analyzing all you have listened to and avoid responding at the moment. Don’t worry yourself about if you agree or disagree with all that’s being said. Anger is a largely irrational emotion, therefore your thoughts and feelings about the situation are best kept to yourself when one is angry, especially if you’re the subject of their anger or you’re personally involved.

Avoid Apologizing

You would think apologizing will calm an angry person down but most times it isn’t so. Many times, apologizing aggravates the person’s anger. Most times, a person is angry because they are not able to get their way with you or with a situation. The key to calming an angry person is to either remain quiet (which can be taken for compliance) or gently acknowledging the person’s anger and assuring the person of your compliance.

Try to Reason with the Person

Later on, when the person is calmer you can address irrational aspect of their outburst and try to reason with them. They are more likely to listen, if they haven’t already realized their own irrationality. If they don’t reason with you and you’re not ready to actually comply, you can opt out of or distance yourself from the situation or person. You can also be patient and give the person time to prove themselves right or wrong.

Try To Relate

It’s okay to question yourself a little. It’s the healthy and humble thing to do. Question your fault in the situation; try to see things from another perspective to confirm the certainty of your views. Be sure you’re on the right track, if you are, then you can either decide to opt out or if you can afford it, give the person time to prove themselves right or wrong. Also, try to relate with the person and understand where the person is coming from. This can help you solve the problem or misunderstanding easily.

Protect Yourself

Keep a safe distance from someone who is angry. It’s a well-known fact that people tend to get physical, threatening and abusive when angry. This is mainly because anger is a largely violent and dangerous emotion. You need to trust your instincts and properly assess the situation. If at any point, you feel threatened or in danger, leave the area immediately without hesitation and without saying anything else to the person (run if you have to, you’re not being coward, you’re being smart.)

PoliticsWike And David Mark Commission Remodelled Brick House (Photos) by metroparrot(op): 6:30pm On May 23, 2017
Former Senate President, Senator David Mark has declared that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike merits a second term because his outstanding projects will speak for him.

Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Remodelled Brick House, the former seat of power, Senator Mark said: "When the next election comes, you don't need to bother with all manner of propaganda. These works will campaign for you.

"And for you Governor Wike, these works are already campaigning for you. There is no need to clamour for a second tenure, the people are the ones to do that on his behalf ".

Speaking further, Senator Mark said: "Whilst people are here commissioning roads; commissioning projects and all other development projects that have been brought to Rivers State, in my home state, they are giving out wheel barrows to empower people".

He stated that Governor Wike stands out as a governor committed to the development of his state.

"This is not my first visit to commission projects in Rivers State. I was here less than a year ago to commission one of the roads. I noticed tremendous improvement in the delivery of democracy dividends.

"It is not about the amount of money or resources at your disposal. It is about commitment and the desire to serve the people. And your governor has done that in a manner no other governor in this country can compete with", the Former Senate President said.

On the PDP crisis, he said that some leaders of the party are acting like paid agents, working against the interest of the party. He noted that as the Local Government election approach in Benue State, these elements have appointed a new chairman to ensure that PDP loses.

He said: "At the moment , there are elements within the party who are just bent on making sure that PDP doesn't win in any state. There are certain elements within PDP who are behaving like paid agents ".

In his remarks, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike explained that his administration resolved to restore the Brick House because of historical purposes.

Governor Wike noted that former leaders of Rivers State beginning from Diete Spiff to Governor Odili governed from the Brick House before the Odili administration constructed the new Government House.

He said after Odili, the Brick House was abandoned and left to rot until his administration took the decision to restore it.

"We invited Julius Berger because it is important that we preserve what we have . This building was built in 1928. All former military administrators up to Governor Odili stayed in the Brick House ".

The commissioning of the restored Brick House attracted political, religious and business leaders from across the country.
