As a way to immortalise and honour the memory of the State’s first governor, the Kwara State University has been named after the late Senator Olusola Saraki. The Kwara State government has renamed its university after the late strongman of Kwara politics, Olusola Saraki. Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, made the announcement in Ilorin at the inauguration of the Sola Saraki Educational Foundation on Friday, May 19, 2017. Ahmed, who declared that the Kwara State University, KWASU, would henceforth be called Sola Saraki University, explained that renaming the university was a better way of immortalising the late politician. He said the late Waziri of Ilorin, had immense love for education as evident in his contributions to the building of several primary and secondary schools across the state. The governor called on individuals and corporate bodies to invest in education as a way of securing the future of the children and donated N15 million for the takeoff of the foundation. Sola Saraki was the father of Bukola Saraki, Nigeria’s Senate president. He was born on May 13, 1933 in Ilorin, Kwara State, he was until his death regarded as the “strongman of Kwara politics”. He first ran in the 1964 parliamentary election for Ilorin as an independent candidate but lost. After the election, he returned to medical practice in Lagos, only returning to party-politics in 1978/79. In 1977, Mr. Saraki was elected as a member of the Constituent Assembly that produced the 1979 constitution. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/05/kwara-state-university-renamed-olusola.html

Everyone knows smartphones are on the pricy side and it can be quite frustrating to spend a large chunk of money on one and end up with a scratched or cracked screen. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, shares 5 of many reasons why your smartphone needs a screen protector. Shatter Resistance Screen protectors can be shatter resistant but not all screen protectors are shatter resistant. For shatter resistance, tempered glass screen protectors can be very effective protection for your smartphone screen against scratches, cracks and shattering of the screen. Tempered glass screen protectors also help to protect your device further against normal wear and tear. Preserves Resale Value Typically, most people use a phone for a year or two before they start thinking of making a change. Regardless of how long you intend to use your smartphone, if you are able to preserve your devices from cracks and scratches, it will contribute positively to its resale value. Ideally, when it comes to resale value, the smartphone devices with little or no scratches on their screens are able to be sold for substantially more. The best way to achieve this is to use a screen protector. Removes Glare From Light Smartphones are mobile and for this reason they are likely to be used while on a bus, in a park, outdoors, indoors and basically just about anywhere. Because of this, the glare from light especially when the smartphone is being used outdoors can be quite uncomfortable and can cause eye tension. Anti-glare screen protectors help to take care of this problem by cutting down on the glare and improving screen visibility, thus reducing eye tension. Fingerprints Having a screen protector can help to keep pesky fingerprint impressions away from your smartphone screen. Anti-fingerprint screen protectors are made from a lipophobic coating that repels skin oils and provides resistance to the appearance and attachment of fingerprints and smudges, making prints on the screen almost invisible from all angles. This helps you to avoid cleaning your screen constantly. Improves Aesthetics Who needs a mirror when you have a reflective screen protector? Reflective screen protectors are perfect for serving the dual purpose of protecting your screen and being a mirror that can be used to assess your physical appearance from time to time to be sure that nothing is out of place. When the phone is in use, the reflective screen protector acts like a normal screen, but when the phone is locked or turned off, that’s when it acts like a mirror. The reflective screen protector also has an attractive look that improves the aesthetic appeal of the phone, in addition to protecting your screen from scratches and helping you assess your physical appearance. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/05/why-your-smartphone-needs-screen.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
A total of 335 foreign nationals were on Tuesday in Abuja granted citizenship by the Federal Government after statutory clearance and due diligence by the relevant security agencies. The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, who presented the certificates of citizenship to the foreigners, charged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Mrs Lara Oshiomhole, Wife of former Governor of Edo, Adams Oshiomole, who is from Cape Verde, is one of the recipients. Dambazau in his remarks said that 335 applicants were approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in January, out of the over 500 foreigners that applied. He explained that 245 of the foreigners approved were granted Citizenship by Naturalisation while 90 were by Registration, mainly foreign women married to Nigerians. “Let me say that application for the Citizenship of Nigeria which can be by Naturalisation or Registration is provided for in Chapter 3, Sections 26 and 27 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ the minister explained. The minister said that the approval was part of government’s effort on the “Ease of doing business in Nigeria” and boosting Nigeria’s image in line with international best practice. He tasked the “new Nigerian citizens” to be of good conduct, respect the rights and customs of their communities and contribute to the development of Nigeria. Damabazau said the last time such ceremony was conducted was in December, 2013 and pledged to ensure its sustenance on an annual basis for proper scrutiny. Dr Lamabert Shumbusho, from Rwanda, who responded on behalf of the recipients, thanked the Federal Government and pledged their loyalty and commitment to the development of Nigeria. NAN reports other recipients include nationals from Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan, China and some African countries, most of whom are business moguls who have been operating in Nigeria for years. The Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) are charged with the responsibility of processing applications for Naturalisation from foreign nationals who have stayed/lived in Nigeria for a minimum of 15 years and those by Registration who are mainly married to Nigerians. South African telecoms giant, MTN, has sacked 280 of its workers in its Nigeria arm, in a major job cut that is targeting at least, 25 per cent of its 1,8000 workers in the country, a company source confirmed yesterday in Lagos. According to the source, some 200 permanent employees and about 80 contract staffers across various cadres, ranging from new graduates to senior managers, were affected in a move the source said is designed to inject fresh blood into the telco’s workforce. Many of those sacked spent up to 15 years with the company having joined MTN as it opened its business in Nigeria in 2001. Sources said affected workers were given a dismal severance of 75 per cent of their gross monthly income multiplied by the number of years with the company. “Given that the company is about 16 years old in Nigeria, the severance package brought pain and discontent among the affected staff. “With the payoff structure, senior managers with 15 years of service were left with about N15 million; most of the staff got less than N5 million,” company source explained. MTN Nigeria recorded nearly $1 billion in profit in 2016. However, the telecoms firm was heavily fined by the Nigerian government for failing to disconnect 5.2 million unregistered subscribers. MTN’sspokesman,FunsoAina, could not be reached for comments yesterday. But a source familiar with the latest downsizing said 200 of those affected had earlier agreed to leave the company voluntarily. The source said the sackings were as a result of “the changing dynamics of the telecoms industry in recent times”. The source said the company introduced the voluntary severance scheme (VSS), to provide a window for one week in April, for persons who have served in MTN for five years and above to take up. Those who decided to leave under the VSS were to be paid the equivalent of their three weeks gross salary for every year they worked with MTN. “What it means is that if one worked in MTN for five years, one would be paid three weeks of their gross salaries times five,” the source said. Eventually, all 280 staff were disengaged under the VSS and paid their benefits, the source said. The source added that since revenue from the voice segment of the industry has attained its plateau, the new revenue stream would naturally come from data services. “Younger and tech-savvy Nigerian graduates are going to drive this new initiative designed to take the telco to the next level,” another source familiar with the development added. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/05/mtn-sacks-200-workers-80-contract-staff.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday launched the rebranded Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, with a pledge that the security of lives and property in the State is now non-negotiable. A total of 177 Salon Cars and Vehicles equipped with necessary communication gadgets, 377 motorcycles, 377 helmets, 4,000 bicycles, metal detectors for ensuring that illegal weapons are not smuggled into public places, among other operational equipment were handed over to the Corps by the Governor. Speaking at the official launch held at Agege Stadium, Governor Ambode said the move was another giant step towards enhancing security all over the State and a vital part of the ongoing efforts of his administration to reform the security and justice sector. The Governor, who on August 15, 2016 assented to the law that created the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, said the Corps had been designed to provide a second layer of policing in order to ensure that the State and communities are more secure. He acknowledged the fact that the Nigerian Police had been very supportive to the State Government especially in fighting crime, but that the need for the Neighbourhood Corps arose from the identified security challenges confronting the State due to huge population, adding that the members of the Corps would complement police especially in areas of community policing. “Let me, however, make it abundantly clear that the Neighbourhood Safety Corps is not in any way in competition with the regular Police Force. “In actual fact, they are expected to assist and complement the Police by providing useful intelligence for crime prevention and to facilitate the arrest of perpetrators of criminal activities in our communities,” Governor Ambode said. He added that in realization of the fact that nothing can be more important in law enforcement than educating the people in charge of enforcing the law, the rebranded Neighbourhood Corps have been trained and equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to complement the good work of the Nigerian Police. He said in addition to the induction on orthodox community policing techniques, the Corps were also trained on how to mediate disputes and the art of negotiating for peaceful resolution; balancing communal interest in resolving disputes and proactive policing engagement instead of reactive policing. “Special hotlines have also been created direct to the Executive Secretary and senior management of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency for easy communication with our communities in the event of any crime. “Any valuable information given to the Corps will attract handsome rewards from the State Government. I therefore call on all Lagosians to join hands with us to say a final NO to crime in our State. “All these equipment have been made possible through the judicious use of tax payers money and funds from the State Lottery Fund for good causes. Please continue to pay your taxes for a better Lagos. “I am very happy to state that through this Safety Corps initiative the State Government has created over 7,000 jobs for officers of the Corps, artisans and other support staff. Job creation is at the heart of economic prosperity and we remain fully committed to a more prosperous Lagos for our citizens,” the Governor said. The Governor, however, charged the Corps not to indulge in brutalizing citizens, but that they should exercise lot of restraint, patience, understanding and maturity while carrying out their duties. Besides, the Governor said in order to further strengthen security, a new executive bill to regulate employment of domestic workers and security guards would soon be forwarded to the State House of Assembly, explaining that the bill, among others, will prescribe regulations for the set of workers and other details to monitor their activities. While noting that there is no longer any room for child abuse or under aged workers, Governor Ambode said it had been discovered that domestic workers were largely undocumented and pose a grave security threat in the State. He also said the recruiting agencies, under the bill, would be licensed and regulated to ensure safety. The Governor also handed over four vans fitted with Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTVs) to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the State Police Command. Earlier, Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr Oluseye Oladejo said the launch of the Neighbourhood Corps and the handing over of several equipment to the agency was an eloquent testimony of a visionary government which had decided to move ahead of emerging challenges of crime. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/03/lagosians-safety-is-now-non-negotiable.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The realisation of possible Eviction started creeping in on the Nominated Housemates, as they went about packing and getting their hair done today. Efe, Debie-Rise, TBoss and ThinTallTony are up for possible Eviction. The Housemates have had a breather, in terms of Evictions, as there was no Eviction last week. This could be the reason why some were feeling a little nervous today. Debie-Rise was up and already packing immediately after the Housemates woke up. She was upstairs alone for a while before Bisola came in. Meanwhile, Efe and ThinTallTony were still dozing off in bed. They eventually woke up and both sat on their beds in silence, with Efe reading something from a piece of paper. As soon as the hairstylists arrived, Debie-Rise and ThinTallTony sat on the chairs and had their hair done. For ThinTallTony, it was a hair trim and shave, and Debie-Rise had her hair braided in neat cornrows. TBoss was up next and she had her hair braided into the latest box braids. She and Debie-Rise had a little girl talk while getting their hair done. They discussed future plans and touched a little bit about tonight’s Eviction, citing a little anxiety. TBoss noted that she was only worried about the other Housemates they are up against. Meanwhile, it took a while for Efe to sit on the stylists’ chair, as he was busy making breakfast in the kitchen. He too had his hair trimmed. It was then time for their weekly shopping, courtesy of PayPorte, and with the Wager won, they went all out selecting the items they liked. The guys had their bags packed too and it was until the late afternoon that TBoss started packing her bags. “I hate packing,” she said. Wondering who is leaving tonight? www.metronaija.com will keep you updated on who’s journey will come to an end. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/03/bbnaija-tboss-and-debie-rise-discuss.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a report which appeared on page 10 of Thisday Newspaper of Thursday March 16, 2017 claiming that the N49million recovered by operatives of the Commission at the Kaduna international Airport on Monday March 13, 2017 was a stunt purportedly intended to sway the senate to confirm Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu's nomination as EFCC Chairman. This claim, which the newspaper attributed to ghost sources in the Senate, to say the least, is ludicrous, smacks of mischief and intended to rub in the unfortunate proceedings of March 15 in the Senate, where Magu’s nomination as EFCC Chair was rejected. Quoting an unnamed Senate source, Thisday reported that “the N49million was allegedly planted by officials of the EFCC at the airport exactly one day to Magu’s screening and confirmation by the Senate to give the semblance of an agency head that was competent and one with a wide dragnet”. It further added that, “we have it on good authority that the N49million was planted by the EFCC to create the impression that Magu is working and a major crime-bursting (sic) czar.” For the avoidance of doubt, the EFCC is a serious and responsible agency which is not associated with frivolity and could not have engaged in any make-belief scheme to impress anybody. The reputation that the agency has today is built on solid and verifiable evidence of effectiveness in law enforcement that is acknowledged the world over. The record of conviction and recovery of stolen assets which have endeared the EFCC to Nigerians was not built on the quicksand of vain glory. When the EFCC stormed the suburbs of Kaduna in February and recovered over $9.7million from the home of Andrew Yakubu, a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, was that a stunt to sway the Senate for confirmation? When the Commission traced, recovered and confiscated $15m and $115m from Patience Jonathan and Diezani Allison Madueke respectively, were those stunts to curry the favour of the Senate? The tens of billions of naira recovered from military officers, politicians and even newspaper publishers from the $2.1billion arms procurement scandal in the Office of the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, were those also a stunt? Only the criminally gullible will not see through the intent of the Thisday report which is clearly fabricated to embarrass. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/03/n49m-recovery-not-stunt-efcc.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
