Akure—FIVE students of a college of education in Ondo State have been arrested for gang rapping an 18-year-old female student of the institution.

Some of the suspects The suspects include Timilehin, Tobi, Olakunle, Adebisi and Nwage. They also made a video recording of the incident, as they took turns to rape her.

While parading 21 suspected criminals, including suspected cult members, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Hilda Harrison, said in Akure that the suspects have confessed to committing the crimes.

Vanguard gathered that the rape victim was the girlfriend of one of the suspects, who lured her to one of the suspects’ house, where they raped her.

The Police Commissioner said one of the suspects, Olakunle, did the video recording while the victim was being raped.

According to her, “after they raped her, they let her go with a threat that they shall use charm on her if she ever reveals the incident to anyone.

“The case was reported to the school authorities and the suspects arrested; the phone and charm used in perpetrating the crime were recovered and the case was transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation.

” Harrison said the victim has been transferred to an undisclosed hospital in Ile Ife, Osun State, where she is receiving treatment.

Her boyfriend’s story The young lady’s boyfriend, Timilehin, denied inviting the lady, but said he could not stop his friends from taking their turns to rape the girl after he finished with the lady.

He said: “We did not plan it at all; it was coincidental.

After I finished with her, my friends took their turns. But I did not know the whole thing was recorded.

But it is true; they raped her.” The Police Commissioner said the case will be charged to court soon after the completion of investigations.

A 35-year-old man, Uche Chukwuka, who allegedly battered his wife and threw her down a two-storey building, appeared before a Yaba chief magistrate’s court in Lagos yesterday.

The accused, who lives in Idi-Oro, Mushin, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge, bordering on assault. Chukwuka pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Inspector Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the offence was committed on June 20 at about 7:30p.m. at the residence of the accused.

He explained that the accused committed the offence, following a heated argument with his wife that led to a fight.

According to Oriabure, “the accused beat up his wife and pushed her off a two-storey building, which caused her grievous bodily harm.”

Magistrate O. S. Aka-Bashorun, granted Chu-kwuka N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

He said one of the sureties must be a community leader or Eze Ndigbo, whose name must be in the gazette of the Lagos State Government and adjourned the case until August 8.

The Kogi State government has revealed how two lecturers and another official belonging to the Kogi State University allegedly embezzled the institution’s funds to the tune of over N100m.

The state Auditor-General, Hon Yusuf Okala explained that the fraud was discovered by his screening committee on the course of their assignment.


He made the revelations when governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello visited the University to discuss various issues affecting the institution and on how to reposition the school for greatness.

Okala, who was the head of the just concluded screening exercise embarked upon by the state government said
the total number of staff of the university before the screening in January, 2016 was 1,744 while 1,193 staff were successfully cleared and have been receiving their salaries.

Okala said 337 staff were on uncleared list but that out of that number, 161 were given clemency by the government.


He further disclosed that 63 staff had no record, while staff with issue of age disparity totaling 110 were part of those clemency was given.

He said six staff were identified as Diaspora civil servants, while another 6 were found to have been collecting salary from double sources.

Okala put the salary wage bill of the University as at January 2016 to be one hundred and ninety four million, three hundred and eighty four thousand, four hundred and fifty naira, fifty kobo (N194, 384,450.50) per month, which will amount to two billion, three hundred and thirty two million, six hundred and twelve thousand, nine hundred and eighty six naira (N2, 332,612,986) annually.


Among those that received double salaries, Okala alleged are “a 34-year-old Mrs Adishetu Usman, a native of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State was employed by Dekina LGA on the 1st of June, 2006 as an adult instructor on grade level 3 and has grown to a grade level 6 as at January 2016.


“Thereafter, as at 2nd June 2014, she was employed by the Kogi State University as a chief porter in the registry department and did not resign her first appointment with the LG. Mrs Adishetu claimed she has hence been working for both Dekina local government and Kogi State University since June 2016 and has been collecting salaries from both LG and the state governments.

“Her monthly salary at Dekina LGA was Nineteen Thousand, Six hundred and Twenty Nine, Sixty Eight Kobo (N19,629.68) while Thirty Two Thousand, Six Hundred and Nine Naira (N32,609) was her salary at the university.”

Another person that fell into Okala’s dragnet was Dr.Solomon Olabode Adebayo, a lecturer 1 in Kogi State University, who was allegedly discovered to be receiving double salary between March 2012 and 2015.

According to Okala, “Adebayo was purported to have resigned from the Teaching Service Commission (T.S.C) in 2012 and took appointment in Kogi State University according to his concessionary statement.

“He was aided by a staff of his former organization by name Mr. Oshadari in other to remain on the payroll of the Teaching Service Commission where he no longer works. He and his accomplice share the proceeds of the dubious act on monthly basis.

“The duo have made a huge sum of money from the government until the screening exercise took place in 2016.
Prior to the screening exercise he was earning One hundred and Ninety Seven Thousand (N197, 000) per month from March 2013 to March 2016 which makes a total sum of Seven Million, Ninety Two Thousand Naira (N4,728,000) he and his accomplice embezzled.”

Mr Usman momoh was alleged to have defrauded the state government to the tune of Ninety Eight Million Naira while serving as pay officer at the College of Education Technical, Kabba before he gained employment as a lecturer in Kogi State University.

Okala added that “Mr Momoh, after preparing the schedule will add fictitious names on the payroll with fake account numbers which he will latter withdraw with the connivance with bank officials.

The Federal Government has expressed concern over the eviction of Nigerians from Cameroon and wondered why Cameroonian Government ignored the tripartite agreement signed between the Nigerian Government, Cameroon and the United States.

Speaking at the Governor’s office on Monday during a courtesy visit on Governor Ben Ayade, the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdulraman Bello Dambauzau rtd said the Federal Government regretted the action of the Cameroonian Government and condemned it.


“Federal Government is actually concerned about the recent eviction of Nigerians in Cameroon and regretted the attitude of Cameroonian Government. It is sad because we did not expect this from them. It is not long the Nigerian Government signed a tripartite agreement among us, (Nigerian Government), Cameroon and the United States over the issues of Bakassi. It is a major concern”.


On why he was in the State, the Minister said he was in the State to proceed to Yala local government area of the State with the view to seeing things by himself on the crisis in Wanikade and Wanihem communities in Ukelle North in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State.

“We are here as Federal Government delegations to visit the crisis area in Yala Local Government Area of the State. Our visit is a fact finding one and Federal Government is so concerned about the crisis especially when it involves lives of women and children as well as property.”

The rainfall, which lasted for about five hours, between Saturday and yesterday, also submerged some houses while many other people were injured.

Out of the deceased, nine were killed by the flood at Checheniya area of Suleja, one killed at Kuspa area of the town, while another died at Ayin-Nassarrawa in Tafa.

The houses submerged were located in Kaltuma and Angwan Gwari in Suleja Local Government Area of the state. Vanguard gathered that some of those who lost their lives were from the same family and their bodies were yet to be found.

The Director General of Niger state Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, Alhaji Ibrahim Inga, who confirmed the incident in Minna, said members of the Agency have already been mobilised to the area in collaboration with the villagers for rescue operation.

A 24-year-old man, Joseph Nwadinobi, has been arrested by the police for allegedly robbing two residents of Ajileye Street, in the Ijedodo area of Ijegun, Lagos State.

The suspect was also brought before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court by a police prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbbokhan, on four counts bordering on robbery, assault and rape.

According to Aigbbokhan, the suspect and his accomplices at large, while armed with toy guns and cutlasses, robbed one Maurice of a laptop, clipper, camera, four phones, and cash of N36,000.

They also reportedly inflicted wounds on his head.

Not done, the suspects reportedly went to one Esther’s apartment. It was gathered that when Esther told them that she had no valuables, they took turns to rape her.

He said that the incident was reported to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command, and a manhunt was launched for the suspects, leading to Nwadinobi’s arrest.

Aigbokhan told the court that the offences contravened sections 299, 297(2)(a) and (b), 175, 260(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The charges read in part, “That you, Joseph Nwadinobi, and others at large, on March 16, 2017, at about 6am, on Ajileye Street, Ijedodo, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves while armed with toy guns, knives, cutlasses and other weapons, did steal one laptop, four phones, a clipper, camera, foodstuffs and cash sum of N36,000, property of one Maurice.

“That you, Joseph Nwadinobi, and others at large, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, while armed with toy guns, knives, cutlasses and other weapons, did cause grievous harm to one Maurice by giving him several machete cuts on the head, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 175 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

“That you, Joseph Nwadinobi and others at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully have sexual intercourse with one Esther without her consent, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 260(1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

The defendant’s plea was turned down by the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Akokhia.

The magistrate ordered that he should be remanded in prison and adjourned the case till September 12, 2017, for mention.

Former Nigeria ambassador to Greece and Asiwaju of Akure Kingdom, Prof. Olu Agbi has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to purge the police force of cultists.

He said that was the only way the war against cultism would be realistic.


Agbi, who spoke on the recent killings and maiming between cult groups in Akure, alleged that some law enforcement agents were members of secret cults.

He said this had posed serious threat to the fight against cultism for the top hierarchy of the security agencies.

According to him, “Security sources told us that Eiye security men in the force would release their members if brought to the police station while Aiye law enforcement agents would do the same to their members”.


He, however, called on the Ondo State Police Command to monitor its men posted to the anti-cultism squad so as to prevent cultists masquerading as police officers.

Agbi who said Akure remained a peaceful community, accommodating and safe for investors, noted that non-indigenes were more involved in cultism in the town.

He said investigations had revealed that non-indigenes were mostly members of the secret cults that had been disturbing the peace of the community in the recent times, saying the Deji-in-Council was already looking into the development.

He said, “Reports reaching us indicate that some law enforcement agents are members of these secret cults which have made the fight against cultism difficult for the top hierarchy of the security agencies.

“We ask the IGP to purge the police of the secret cult members so that the war against cultism and other crimes could be meaningful.

“We call of the Ondo State Police Command to monitor its men posted to the anti – cultism squad so that we will not have cultists masquerading as police officers.”

“We urge the setting up of anti-cultism squad in each of the police divisions in the state capital.

“Landlords and land owners must screen those to be given their properties so that it would not be converted to kidnappers ’ den or cultists ’ abode. Any property owner who contravenes this must be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“We appeal to those with uncompleted buildings to secure their properties and make sure they clear the bushes around them so as not to be converted to den of criminals.”

Contrary to the expectations of many Nigerians that Mrs Husseina Mohammed, a civil servant in kogi state attached to the Teaching Service Commission will be compensated for her honesty in returning the sum of N1.8M mistakenly paid into her account amid the current hardship, the state government has issued her a query for allegedly misinforming the public about the excess salary mistakenly paid into her account.

The sanction is coming through the instruction given by the State Auditor General Alhaji Yusuf Okala who noted that Mrs Mohammed misinformed the public that she had returned the money to the state treasury even when she did not received any alert to confirm such transactions.

The Auditor General explained that the officer only returned N1.6M on 3rd July this year out of the N1.8M she claimed to have returned six weeks earlier, saying “the information has caused confusion in the system”.

He also directed that her salary be put on hold over the wrong information she gave the committee.

Earlier, the chairman Salary Reconciliation Committee, John Alayi explained that N1,813,186.98 was paid in excess to Mrs Mohammed because the statement from Teaching service commission mistakenly placed her on level sixteen while she was actually on grade level nine.

According to him, “the committee calculated the difference between grade level nine and grade level sixteen and paid the supposed arrears to the officers account but later discovered that one Hussein Mohammed also a staff of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) was the one on grade level sixteen and not Mrs Husseina Mohammed.”

It was reported that , Mrs Mohammed said she received an alert for the excess salary and immediately filled a teller for the transfer to the state treasury on 22nd May, 2017.

Meanwhile, the family of Mrs Husseinna Mohammed have expressed disappointment on the latest development coming from the state government insisting that the allegation against her has brought disgrace to the family.

It was also gathered from a close family source that Mrs Husseina Mohammed has been barred from speaking to the press or risk further punishment from the Government.

It was also learnt from a family source that, the said money was paid to the state coffers but were surprised that weeks later the cashier who performed the transaction failed to confirm that a particular digit was missing in the account number which the money was paid in.

” We are surprise that they are coming up with this at this time that the couple honorably returned money mistakenly paid into their account. The husband has not been paid for more than 15 Months yet they didn’t bother to withhold the huge sum of money despite the current hardship.

” This family barely feed three square meal just because of the harsh economy and the non payment of salary in kogi state. From what I know, they have been surviving through the wive even though the husband is also working with the state government.”

“Are we supposed to blame them or blame the cashier?. The government should also blame their personnel for this defects instead of suffering an innocent soul when she made the state proud. It is unfortunate that they are getting this at this time instead of being honored for their honesty. ”

“Going by what is happening, if something of such happens again, people will be scared to come out and return such money because they don’t want to be disgraced. The news is everywhere now that they have issued her a query and her salary be placed on hold. Let be sincere, if you are the one, will you be happy? Am really disappointed I must confess.” The family source stated.

It would be recalled that in June during an interview with journalist in Lokoja, Mrs Mohammed said that she returned N 1,813,186.98 to the state coffers credited to her account.

She earlier explained how the money entered into her account. “One morning,while shopping, my phone beeped, indicating a text message. Upon opening the folder containing the SMS, I saw that my salary account domiciled in Zenith Bank, Lokoja Branch had been credited with N1,813,186.98 The text message stated that it was my salary for the month of March, 2017.”

Shocked, Mrs Mohammed told reporters that she read the message over and over again. Aside reading the message repeatedly, she took her time to count the figures displayed in the message. After a while, she abandoned the materials she had come to buy and found her way home.

On getting home, she narrated her experience to her husband. After a brief interaction, they decided to refund the money, saying that it was the right thing to do. Her husband, an employee of the TSC in Lokoja, was one of those affected by the just concluded screening exercise in the state. He disclosed that for 15 months, he had not received any salary from government.
